He was literally born into music. Ibrahim Ferrer’s mother went into labour at a social club dance and 70 years later, another social club made him a star.
All I know about this wonderful singer is that he had sung in various small Cuban bands all his life and was retired – living off a small state pension and shining shoes for a living – when he was recruited by US guitarist Ry Cooder to be a part of an album called Buena Vista Social Club. The album, and subsequent documentary of the same name by Wim Wenders, struck a chord with audiences and gave Ferrer a name and an international career at age 70! He started touring and recording solo albums but was refused a US visa to attend the Latin Grammy’s for which he had been nominated (and subsequently won).
Buena Vista Social Club has remained one of my favourite albums ever since I first heard it several years ago so I was extremely saddened to hear that Ibrahim Ferrer had passed away on Saturday in Havana, soon after returning from a European tour.
His story is as inspiring as his soulful music and gravelly voice through which his spirit will live on.

An international career and grammy's at 70! That's great. Good for him. It's sad for his loved ones that he's no longer with us, but he obviously left "singing" and that's a great way to go.
Love, Kristin

hi rahul,
i read it earlier that u r in love with this album.but i must say that ur writing skills r g8.this is one hidden talent of urs which i came to know lately.u r awesome. just phenominal.
I remember all the "uproar" the year of that Grammy nomination...I don't think I realized there was a documentary...another assignment at the local library (searching for the documentary and the album)...thank you...for contributing to my madness!!!!
p.s. Apparently, I am not the only one held completely captive by your writing skills. Would it be too presumptious to call you a modern day "Pied Piper"?!?!?

Dear Rahul,
I need help... read on, please...
I am a 21 yr old screenwriter and all i can do in life is write and make films. I have made three short films. I want to get my work analysed from someone who is in the field, so that i can improvise on it. Can you help by reading a couple of my story ideas? Will be really grateful because accesing professionals is very difficult for guys like me who have no film background whatsoever. I am very confident about my skills as a writer, all i need is a platform.
My blog address is www.blogsrnot4me.blogspot.com
thanks.
