Deepak Chopra - August 04, 2005
In one of his books, Carlos Castaneda talks about how words create reality.
He says: "words transform into form." The Gospel of John states: first there was the word and the word was made into flesh. Words are the magical property of whoever owns them. They are the stuff of charms, incantations, and spells. They are placebos when they heal and they are nocebos when they weave the spell of death [as in the Australian Aboriginal custom of "pointing the bone"]. Rahul Khanna's post "Crazed Junkie Whore" attracted so much attention and rightly so! It is a perfect example of onomatopoeia where the sound echoes the sense. In this case, the sound and the sense are certainly titilating to the first chakra - the most primal, the most basic, the most enjoyable of our instincts where the spiritual and the carnal meet and coalesce and mingle. Congratulations to Rahul Khanna!
Ever since the sages of the Upanishads, people have wondered: what is the source of thought? The science of thinking about thinking is known as Hermeneutics. Current scientific thinking among some avante garde quantum neuro-scientists holds that a thought does not exist in the brain before it is actualized as an action potential in a synaptic network. Where is a thought before you have it? And where does it go after you've had it? People like Amit Goswami and the late Herms Romijn inform us that before a thought localizes and after it disappears it remains as a probability amplitude in a field of possibilities, non-local in a domain beyond space and time. Current information theory states that information exists in a domain that transcends space/time.
Next time someone asks you "where was I before I was born and where will I go after I die?" The correct answer could very well be: "where my last thought was before I was born and where it disappeared after it died!" My grand-daughter Baby Tara is asking me some very profound and existential questions these days. I am trying to figure out how to explain Hermeneutics to her. Any advice would be appreciated!

You are right Kavita. I have finally found my GURU deepak
Wonderful, I need an exclusive interview with Tara now, instead of trying to chase you through the globe..
have to share this cute story..my friend's four year old niece Ankita was asked 'how are you so cute?"..the four year old replied..axshually,(actually) God made me that way" He asked "when did God make you that way?" Pat came the reply- since I was a seed!
Child is indeed the father(or mother) of man!
Magic. We're talking about magic. Words are spells, they are energy forms that go out and do their creative work, in the ether and in the minds of any audience. That we are what we are is the effect of our words, en masse, amassed over generations. Mishmash, at best. One day of coherent thought, collective thought, creative brilliant intention, en masse, would transform the world. I read Jeffery Sach's awesome book, The End of Poverty, raptly. It thrilled me, it filled me with such inspiration, because the inspeakable suffering around the world left me feeling powerless. Suddenly, I wa alive with hope. Days, I mean DAYS later, here are these huge publicized concerts, Bono and his crew, all touting relief for Africa and all the ONE.org publicity. I was astounded. It works! On a global level, it works. I am awed. So my ten dollars to get white wristbands is met with millions of like minds, the same thought, compassion, love for these dying people. It 's astounding. Let's save the world with our words! Of course, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has been putting his attention on world peace since what, 1958? And he has accumulated a mass agreement with that sentiment. All these miracles are doable, and group agreement, mass thought, seems like very big magic. I just love it.
Magic Words
In the very earliest time,
when both people and animals lived on earth,
a person could become an animal if he wanted to
and an animal could become a human being.
Sometimes they were people
and sometimes animals
and there was no difference.
All spoke the same language.
That was the time when words were like magic.
The human mind had mysterious powers.
A word spoken by chance
might have strange consequences.
It would suddenly come alive
and what people wanted to happen could happen-
all you had to do was say it.
Nobody can explain this:
That's the way it was.
-Netsilik Eskimo poet Nalungiaq
when a thought takes form and then disappears, does it leave a residue of its existence. I swear I have had what you may call thought-hangovers, where someone or you yourself have said something and it seems to linger on long after the thought has gone, sort of like a echo.
There's a big discussion about the literal versus the metaphorical in the myths and poems. Sometimes I feel that all the universe wants is one person to cleanse themselves right down to the strings of matter, that if they would do this the metaphorical would become real. Sometimes I think no one has ever done this, that Jesus and Buddha were symbols of men who did this, but they weren't historical figures, they were symbols of people who did this. Or if they were historical figures they were so remarkable that legends grew up around them, pointing to this, although they, the historical person still didn't go all the way. If one person did go all the way he would redeem all his past and all his future, and what's more he would redeem everyone else's past and future! After the poem above, "I can't explain this. That's just the way it is."
Hi Deepak, when little ones ask me questions like the one baby Tara asked,my answer is you were with Krishna(or Jesus or God)before you were born, and you will go to KRISHNA after you die.But what is puzzling me is why is Deepak asking these questions.you already know the answers. Is it possible The Guru wants comments!
I would give her a riddle, that when solved gives a deep insight into this matter. Riddels that are interesting keep making circles in your brain for years, giving a lot of joy when you break the catch -22.
for example:
It thinks that it thinks and because of that it is thinking that it is thinking. What is it that is thinking that it thinks?
have fun!
Good Afternoon Deepak . . . hope all is well. How wonderful it is to have children simplify the mysteries of life and have us try to look at it from their perspective - the KISS principle - Keep It Simple & Straighforward!
My face smiled when you recognised Tara may be your GURU! Your friend Wayne Dyer often speaks of his children and how each of are his best teacher . . . I was just listening to one of his CDs where he told a story of Serena (who he claims is the best teacher for all of them!) and I think Summer having breakfast together one morning and Serena asked Summer 'If you didnt have feet - would you wear shoes?' Aggitated and cranky at 6:30 in the morning, Summer replied 'Of course not - if I didn't have feet - why would I need shoes - of course I wouldnt wear shoes!! Why are you bothering me this early?? Leave me alone.' Serena responds back 'Then why are you wearing that bra??'
Thank you for sharing the new lessons you are learning from Tara . . .she comes from great genes . . . enjoy your journey of learning! Wishing you an overabundance of laughter, joy, happiness, smiles, hugs, revelations, serenity, tranquility and inner bliss!! Keep Smiling!!
Laila
PS . . .Stephen . . . many thanks for sharing the poem . . .I enjoyed it!
Keep Smiling!!
Laila
Laila,
That was a great story about Dr. Dyer and his children...never understimate the power of a child...I am a greatest fan of Dr. Wayne Dyer and read many of his books attended his talks and the stories that he tells about his kids is just amazing and pure joy...
And Deepak you have met one of your greatest challenger and enjoy the wisdom of her words...
Love,
Sharon
Oh how sweet Deepak!! Just the thought of you and your little granddaughter, two great minds coming together to tackle the mysteries of life......
let us know what you discover ;)
Thanks Sharon - I cannot imagine my life without the influences of Deepak and Wayne Dyer . . . I hope I am able to see them in person one day! Take care and keep smiling!!
Laila
Dear (((Deepak)))... you don't know how to explain Hermeneutics to Tara... if I were you, I'd ask her :)
yes, ask Tara!
Besides the fun is not in knowing - it's in finding out. And as long as children feel safe then perhaps we needn't do so much explaining?
I was definitely attracted to the title of Rahul's blog - Crazy Junkie Whore! And I can't argue with Deepak's take on it.
And I've had fun hitting the "post" button 4 times in a row! :)
Love, Kristin
I am not surprised at this coming from "heavy D's" Tara. She sounds like an "old" soul.....Enjoy this challenge....and you may teach eachother...w/love which is the best part. Joanie PS Kids understand concrete....go to a hobby or science store and get or build a model of the brain.....I'd like to be a fly on the wall during that conversation!
Deepak,
Give a monkey a brain and he will think he is the center of the universe.
You're welcome, Laila, I've known that poem for a long time, and it seemed to fit nicely in this context about words. I love the Gospel thing too, "And then the word became flesh..." Actually "word" in the Bible was translated from the Greek "logos" which has an even deeper meaning than the English "Word" but I can't remember it now...
Do we (especially children) have the capacity to understand beyond what is expressed in words (e.g., a mahavac)?
I discovered understanding beyond verbal level when I had an initiation that opened my hand chakras to pass healing prana. Only 3 weeks later a delightful 2-year-old girl, so loving and open that she would run up and hug perfect strangers around the knees, fell 9 feet from a deck, landing in fortunately soft earth. She wasn't physically injured, but shocked and frightened, and sat on her father's lap white-faced and breathing in ragged sobs. I was inexperienced in the technique and wasn't sure what would happen with a child, but this was my goddaughter, and her distress was so poignant that I invited her to come to me. When I put my hands to her little body, it was as though pure love began to pour into her. She didn't know how to talk yet, so there couldn't be any words, but she clung to me and burrowed into my chest. The love began to emanate from my whole body, and then flames arose around us--we sat in a space surrounded by intense, burning, purifying love.
Afterwards, I certainly had no words to say, and she couldn't tell me what she had felt, but she turned her face up to me, raised her arms slowly, and cupped my cheeks in her hands, looking into my eyes and smiling as softly as an angel--like the cherubs you see painted on church walls and ceilings. But the understanding she showed in that gesture of laying on cupped hands left no doubt that she was "giving it back" to express a wordless thank-you sweeter than any words could speak.
How could it happen? I think it was the sheer innocence of a child, no doubts or disbelief, and the simplicity and purity of her thought. Do you have a sense that Tara may understand much despite the opaqueness of the topic, at an intuitive level unexperienced by us as adults? And when she's old enough, of course, you have the joy and the special bond of giving her her first word to bid her godspeed on her journey.
Marty
Deepak,
Tara will remain very insightful to you and all around her that listen. "I am trying to figure out how to explain Hermeneutics" Ask her she might be able to explain it to you.
I have been wanting to ask you this question and you touched on it as stated below...
"Where is a thought before you have it? And where does it go after you've had it? People like Amit Goswami and the late Herms Romijn inform us that before a thought localizes and after it disappears it remains as a probability amplitude in a field of possibilities, non-local in a domain beyond space and time. Current information theory states that information exists in a domain that transcends space/time."
So, all of these thoughts and observations are part of one origination or source. We are all in this dream together as one, how can we achieve a place where we can all cognize thoughts and events that are an individual experience but part of a collective whole? (Allowing us to agree to disagree and be in motion in harmony).
Also, what is the point of being preoccupied with death and destruction when in reality it is only our perception of a time/space experience?
looking forward your's and other's response.
Hello All. So many of the words entered here echo something beautiful yet elusive within me...i am thankful for this.
Great questions, Suzanne,
Where do our thoughts originate from?
And if they aren't my thoughts, or your thoughts, then whose thoughts are they?
Back to Deepak's question about little Tara.
How old is she?
I would hold off on trying to explain Hermeneutics to a little girl. I am a gramma myself, and have lived a wonderful life without ever even knowing what this word means.
What is so wonderful about little children is that they make us answer their questions in the common sense that is natural to them. We explain a concept by demonstrating its action in Nature, or something real that they can relate to. Mommy and Daddy, their family, food, their pets and friends.
I think that this is why our children are our Gurus.
I found my children able to answer these questions themselves. When spiritual questions were put simply before them, their answers would be right on. It's as if they could still remember the truth that we struggle so hard for a "revelation of". (I believe that a "revelation" is merely a memory of what you have always known---that's why is rings so true.) I would very humbly say to you that if it gets too complicated, God's usually not in it.
One more comment:
According to the Bible, the world itself was created with words. Never underestimate their power!!!
Sounds like you expect platonic reply reply. Before you were aware of realities were they not so?
The love and inspiration of these moments you speak were always there. You always love your children, before they were born you loved them in the act of procreation. The enlightenment of moments they provide your deepest meanings and reinforcement of that fact are where you can recognize the full scope of this and feel it.
Sharing that is the next stage which you practice here in the body of truth.
The question is the answer in the wonder of youth more times than not, and it inspires all of us.
As for words and their origins in thought, there are many of concern. Is it possible there are words of unity across these various beliefs?
One would expect the most likely case to be within the modes of Abramic covenant.
Or for the spoken words to power you note previously to have a syllable within the descriptive body of the other names to match.
Suzanne, a Hopi prophecy says:
"144,000 Sun Dance enlightened teachers will totally awaken in their mind bodies. They will begin to meet in their own winged serpent wheels and become a majority force of the light to help the rest of humanity to dance their dream awake. A Sun Dance teacher is any human being who has awakened, who has balanced their shields, who has gained the dream mindbody and who honors all paths, all teachers and all ways."
James Twyman is gathering 144,000 signatures for peace to present to Pope Benedict on September 21st, the United Nation's International Day of Peace ( www.emissaryoflight.com/peacewalk/ )
Maybe this is one way we can honor?
Dear Deepak,
One of the postings on this blog discussed the meaning of various colors. Now the question is about the power of words and thought, and how to explain this to a child. And many have mentioned the natural intelligence of children. How they can understand sometimes more simply and purely than an adult. This all reminded me of a problem I once had, believe it or not, with the color purple.
I associated purple with sacrifice and suffering. This started back in my Catholic boarding school days during lent when just about everything was draped in purple. What little fun we were allowed was also sacrificed during this purple-season as we prayed and meditated over the crucifixion of Jesus.
At first I just didn’t like purple, but then I became slightly superstitious about it. I had an impression that if I wore purple something bad would happen. I didn’t like the idea that I was superstitious about purple; but instead of dealing with my belief, I defied it by wearing a deep purple dress to an event I had to attend.
Only half kidding, I announced that we might be in for some trouble since I was wearing purple. I told those present that I was superstitious about purple and felt something bad would happen if I wore it. Some laughed, and some shook their head, telling me that my belief was silly. They assured me that nothing “bad” would happen.
The God-power, happy to oblige my words, did not fail me. Within the hour, a freak snow blizzard, not predicted by the local weather forecasters, descended upon my city. The electricity went out in the building we were in, and so did the heat. Some tried to dare the storm by leaving early, many ending up sliding into places they wish they hadn’t.
Eventually the lights came back on, but one of the ladies who had laughed the loudest at my superstition, now turned to me in the darkness of the building and begged me never to wear purple again. I noticed that her nine year old granddaughter was sitting beside her as she said this.
The girl came over to me and took my hand. She looked up at me and said, “ It is time for you to be nice to purple. And, it is time for purple to be nice to you.” This was such a remarkable statement, especially since it came from a child. It replaced what I had felt about purple with the face of this child, so kindly offering me a new belief. In her simplicity, she understood all that was going on. Her words freed me from my superstition. I now can see the beauty in purple.
I believe Tara will understand
Fondly, Patzi
Within the Shem h'amephorash one should hear all of the possible manifestation of language root.
Your note of Eastern root energies derived from word forms should integrate within this word.
The syllables are within this no?
The closest we can ever get to saying G-d's true name is when we have no control of our pronunciations.
These mantras of the young provide the continuance and penance for the whole of being.
You should thank heavens for this fact, for their language is the most sincere of all and cannot be spoiled, yet spoiling children is something inherent to being a parent for most! :)
Mr. Murder:
What kind of name is that? Is that what you do? You're full of sh--!
This neck of the woods we call crazy junkie whores 'Sister' and 'ma'am' or some derivative thereof.
Well just the junkie part.
The titles 'mister', 'dude', and 'male' can respectively cover the designations of crazy and whore.
Mr. Murder:
OK
"Current scientific thinking among some avante garde quantum neuro-scientists holds that a thought does not exist in the brain before it is actualized as an action potential in a synaptic network. Where is a thought before you have it?"
According to current scientific thinking the thought is nowhere before it is in the brain... They beleive the thought is coming from our experiences, creating an electrical impulse. When we die we also stop to exist as the thoughts do. All else is wishful thinking.
Nothing else has been scientifically proven. Thet cakk it wishful thinking or quasi phsysics or something.
(I am not saying I agree with the above, but they are right that there are no scientifically proofs).
Stefan
Well....back to counting Rahul's responses.
Perfect timint then I see.
For myself, I was thinking about how amazing it is that it was only four weeks ago that I found this Intentblog--thanks to the Founder's Intentions!
It is a staggering and powerful monument to the "Word," as Shekhar and Deepak have so eloquently "book-ended" the notion, let alone, their family and friends, have also opened a portal that goes up-and-down and in-and-out, as well.
Without even leaving my apt. to go to the Chopra Wellness Center in a last-ditch effort to turn a dying body back--I am amazed at the "Deepak Dreams" that have guided me in the astral planes of nightime (and daytime if you count 18+- hours/day) to even meeting some of you, like Pat-Z, in places where it was safe to dream of healing again--that it is OK to be sick--so it is OK to dream a new dream, or one of newness.
It was a remote possibility to me, only a month ago, that I would have a body to go to a seminar with, let alone the energy or ability to sit and pay attention--but I spend this weekend there and, although still real tired alot, my body is starting to work it seems, again.
The power of the word: after laughing for an hour or two tonight while reading your posts, and adding another to Rahul's CJW post regarding the newest medical treatments in the works for such--I still had Wayne Dyer's "Power of Intention" show going on PBS, and it is still going--almost four hours later.
As Dr. Dyer points out on tonight's show, which was from maybe 18-24 months ago, it was his 118th PBS show over the last six years. At 63-years-old he goes for four hours and loves it.
Before laughing at your responses to Rahul's post, I had to check on the coincidence of Deepak's post regarding "Hermeneutics," and the coincidental association of a Dr.nemed Herms Ronojn (a?). What a cool name--just the "sound" of it!
Has anybody heard of Eckankar? The "ancient science of soul travel?" Supposedly, it is all based on sound. Like Aum, or Om, the primordial sound of God. Or Wayne Dyer's "Meditations for Manifestation," with the morning "Ah" meditation, and the evening "Om" meditation--to produce "Shalom."
I haven't done them lately--but when I really got the sickest over the last four or five months, I would just lay on my couch and play them without even having the energy, or desire, to say them or "sound" along with them.
But for someone who was taking 100-125 units of insulin a day, and two medications for insulin resistance since insulin wasn't working anymore, well....I was getting blood sugar readings of 400-550 3-4 weeks ago--when I first tapped into the Intentblog, and was desparately trying to figure out how I would even crawl to some clinic to live or die. The blood readings were between 90-165 today, but I only checked it twice, instead of every two hours--at about $1/test!
Tonight, after reading your blogs, laughing alot, listening to some "Ramtha CD's about the soul's journeys through 12 dimesnions--and how that has to do with reincarnating here, so I can go to a 10-hour-per-day seminar in the next three days with this Ramtha character," while listening to Wayne Dyer's fabulous stories, thinking about Dr. Dyer's book, "Gifts from Eykis," (named after his daughter Skye, spelled backwards, who sings St. Francis' prayer of 'being an instrument...'), well...I think Deepak needs to write one for Sri Aratji-Tara spelled....). Did anyone also notice the other author's name, Amit Goswami? Kind of, "Go Swami!"
Sooo....Love and many thanks to you "Blogheads," for your "Words," for getting me to think and feel again--all of the feelings, not just the easy ones.
Gotta go--Dr. Dyer is saying something about Carlos Castenada and Intention.
Time for me to go so I can learn something useful--rather than waste my time with a bunch of Crazed Junky Blog-Whores. Anonymously "Yours," (or is it Who...res??)
Aurora,
Thank you! What a beautiful reference. I was raised in the desert close to the Hopi's.
Stephan,
"According to current scientific thinking the thought is nowhere before it is in the brain... They beleive the thought is coming from our experiences, creating an electrical impulse. When we die we also stop to exist as the thoughts do. All else is wishful thinking."
Where did you get this from? And could it be that yes it stops as an electrical impulse in that body but the thought does not stop in the spirit which never ends?
Aurora Laila, and Suzanne: Like Dr. Dyer is saying on PBS--we come from "nowhere," and return to "nowhere," or from no-where, to now-here, and back "up again."
I love this saying by Ramtha, "You are the reason for Eternity (longer than Forever)!"
Aurora--has Rahul sent you the money yet for running up the posts?
Just teasing--you all bring tears to my eyes, all kinds, and the book, "The God I AM: From Tragic to Magic," talks about the heart chakra opening--when tears spill over because the system can't quite handle all the increasing levels of energy moving through the energy-in-motion fabric yet--and it says, "but it is all very wonderful!"
I loved your post about the 144,000. There is a new TV show on here in America called "The 4400." I think it is a very interesting take on the notion of the "Rainbow Warriors" the Hopi's have been speaking of.
I can't recall where I read or heard it, but...I know someone told me that "Hopi" means Peace!
While writing this post, I just got an e-mail notice about James Twyman's 144,000 signatures! How coinc.....Oh well--I "heard" (just a rumor!) that as many as 500,000 will be "walking" with him to the new Pope (means "Papa"--we've got our own BaraPapa, ChotaPapa, and BabyPapas!)--also remember that "pontiff" means bridge-builder--so it is good when Aurora wants to Pontificate!
Hi Laila--love your words!!! Dave
Mr. Murder
Don't forget to stop off at the store on your way home to get bread, milk, and a package of microwave hot dogs for your dinner tonight.
Mrs. Murder
Dear Deepak: I would try answering Tara with: 'What do you think?'
David, I will be thinking of you this weekend as you take your physical and spiritual journey to the Chopra Center!// I found a document that said I was born at 4:47. Wouldn’t have meant anything to me if you hadn’t recently told me that 444 is the angel-number. I’m three minutes short of being an angel. :) Enjoy! Patzi
Hi Patzi, I know very littla about Chakras, but what I do know is that purple is the crown color chakras at the top of the head that is closest to God. I had written a little on an earlier post as i was told I have a strong purple chakrah. Purple has always been my favorite color. hope you are well!
Dave, Have a great inspirational time this weekend! Joanie I am headed for a drum circle this evening. I have only done it one other time and loved it.....
Patzi, I loved your purple story, thank you. A simple but so deep and multifaceted lesson.
Suzanne, what a "coincidence" :) My husband was born in Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico, and is trying to find out as much as possible about that region, so we're talking a lot about it these days.
David, no, no money from Rahul, lol... but I'm keeping all channels of abundance open ;) :D I hope you'll have the best weekend ever, and I join everyone else who's backing you up with loving thought energy :) I can't wait for you to come back and tell us about it!
HI,Thank you Deepak for such thought provoking, blogs.Thank you for letting all of us share your thoughts as they form.most of what i am going to write comes from speeches by Swamy Vivekananda.what is a thought?thought is a force as is gravitation or repulsion.from the infinite storehouse of force in nature the instrument called chitta takes hold of some, absorbs it and sends it out as thought.force is supplied to us through food.for those who do not believe in this ,when we fast we meditate better because not many thoughts are bugging you.if you fast longer than what is considered safe you realise no thoughts are coming. or very few thoughts are forming.all forces in nature must be created by the universal mind.thought is in nature. word is in nature.mind is in nature.the thought and the word are inseparable. the external part is the word ,the internal part is the thought.the thought may be the same all over the world, but the words and the language will be different.thoughts and words are very powerful.many of you remember the experiment of Sir Humphrey Davy.when the laughing gas overpowered him he was motionless and said the whole universe was made up of Ideas, the universe was an ocean of thoughts.the law of nature is that every form in the world is taken out of surrounding atoms and eventually goes back to the atoms.similarly all of us including our thoughts originate in GOD and eventually go back to GOD.As Deepak points out thoughts and words are very powerful.Sylvia Brown writes about an actual place where there are only negative thoughts.I would never like to step foot in it. it must be a very dark place indeed.
Joanie, I had read your previous post about purple being the color of God -- I will also add that thought to my more positive view. I've been meaning to send you a spiritual hug this week. I know you've gone through one of those tough life changing events recently. Sounds like you are doing well. Know you have the support of your "web family." Enjoy your drum circle. What is that, by the way? Sounds like fun. I am going to the India Festival tonight. I am looking forward to it. Love, Patzi
Hi Patzi,
I got your spiritual hug.....thank you so much. On the larger and most important scale of life I am doing great. I am feeling the best I have felt in my life...despite some still loose ends to deal with that hopefully will be over soon.
I have reaffirmed who I am and as my son has said, (seeing my recent Chopra books around and listening to me tell him about drum circles...and reading what I am writing to him in a journal..)"mom you are becoming a hippie!". From a 15 year old mind, it was very cute. I have always been a spiritual person and for the last few years felt very block and now am back on track.
I have just discovered a "drum circle". I go to a place for accupuncture here in Md. called the Tai Sophia Institute. They actually were the sponsors of Deepak's recent visit here where I attended the Soul of Leadershop Conference.
On June 25th Tai Sophia (an accredited university that people come to, to be trained in many areas of the healing arts) celebrated their 30th year anniversary. I went to this. Sort of in my shy way of "stretching" my spirituality I heard these drums.....I went to look and saw all these people jamming on bongos, tamborines, shakers..etc. I was a bystander for about 5 min and then just jumped in. I LOVED IT! I sat there for an hour and did this. Every 15 min, or so, the leader would jump in an lead us in a rythem and then we went back to jamming.
So in my research, I found that there are "drum circles" around. My son is going with me in a few weeks here in our community. Tonight I am going to a cafe where they have this every Friday night. It just felt sooo good!
I have been thinking of having a gathering of close girlfriends to thank them for all their support these last 3 years. I am planning a surprise this month for them...shhhhh don't tell lol, and guess what....it is going to be a drum circle for one hour. It is going to be called a Celebration of Sisterhood. I got this from name from a "ceramic" shoe that I got when my best friend died at the age of 45 from pancreatic cancer.
She had a shoe collection. The shoe that I chose has these words...."A sincere shoe designed to celebrate the secretive language of Sisterhood."
So sister I an off to drum, sorry this post is so long, but it is what it is.
Namaste
Joanie
Great Joanie! Thanks for sharing and telling me about the drum circles. I love drums! They make me want to jump up and dance. Hope you had fun tonight! I didn't make it to the India Festival tonight. Plan to go tomorrow. Keep drumming! Patzi
Hi Patzi,
Enjoy the festival tomorrow. Are you of Indian heritage?
I just got back. It was very interesting and fun. This drum circle was actually very different than the first one I went to. This one was more spiritual. I learned a lot about instruments that I never knew existed. For instance, an instrument that is simular to the one that goes into a music box. Another from Australia that is long, round and huge. It is the instrument that the Aboriginies used to send messages...
The leader talked about the energy in a drum circle and how everyone is equal. We went around and each said our first name and gave a little
"beat" of the drum as he said there is so much more to a person than their name. There was a candle lit in the middle of the room.
One of the coolest things was as I drove and parked very near to this place where I had never been...there was a little girl outside of a store. The place where this was held was not a cafe as I thought, but a store. I asked her mother where this place was and the little girl offered her hand to take me. Her mother said it was ok.
So, then the little girl sat next to me in the chair and was holding a stuffed bear with a red heart velcroed to the bear. She said she needed to tell me about this bear and why the heart came off. It was so one could share the love from the bear with another person and to tell them that you love them. It was so tender. As she told me this story I glanced at her hand and she was wearing a "butterfly" ring that made me smile. I knew I would enjoy the evening.
This drum circle had this 5 year old, teenagers, and people all the way to a gentleman who looked to be in his 70's. Some came with their own drums, but there were drums and all sorts of instruments the leader brought for people to borrow and share.
At one point, 2 teenagers got up and danced to some middle eastern rhythms. It looked as if maybe they had learned belly dancing. I was not so brave to get up and dance, but really enjoyed watching and playing....
So that was it. It will be fun to try some different drum circle to see which i like the best. Be well, Love, Joanie
Perhaps the best persons to direct questions about the usefulness of written and spoken language and the origin and end of thought are those who cannot speak words -Those of us who speak with gestures and expressions.
And what of the universal language (body language) which today many believe conveys more than our contrived words?
Tell us more Eldora? I teach blind children who do not see and read and write by touch and hearing...any way that one is literate or can be taught literacy is ok in my book....to communicate and be "heard" is the answer however one does it....Joanie
Good Morning Joanie . . .hope all is well. Thank you for sharing your drum circle experience . . . wow . . .sounds very karmic! I loved the little girl and her removable heart on the bear . . . perhaps each of us should carry one of those. I hope you will continue to share your drum circle experiences and the revelation of inner communication being released. Wishing you a day filled with happiness, laughter and joy . . . take care . . .Keep Smiling!! Laila
Thanks Laila,
It was a neat experience......the bear was whiw with a red heart. It was a adoable. This little girl was the perfect "greeter" for a person who had never ventured out to do this before....What a welcome! I whis you all the same in your new day. Love, Joanie
Thought exist as truth outside of perception and do carry past the span of existence, the most powerful of which emanate from Source energy and can best compared to neutrinos in the physics realm.
So powerful they can move through stars and planets. In the same way powerful thoughts can create an energy and power that is a source of karma which we best relate to in terms of visualization.
Hi Joanie, That was such a visual story. Could “see” it all as I read it. The part about the girl and her bear was great! I especially liked the butterfly ring. A God symbol that you were suppose to be there, welcoming you. I am not of Indian heritage, but I will be interested what I will experience at the festival. Especially after being on this blog and reading so many thoughts and feelings from those who are. My heritage is typical of the US, a mixture. I’m half Italian, a quarter Irish, the rest is divided between French and Iroquois -- Native American. I feel the butterfly ties us together when we’re not on the blog. The other day I walked out of the house, and I was in a slightly grouchy mood. I looked up and a lovely lemon colored butterfly was flying over my head. Hard not to smile. Have a great day! Patzi
Hi Patzi and Laila,
Yes, this little girl and her bear and ring were magical and karmic as Laila said. Her name was Julia and one of the teenagers said her name was Joanie when introduced. Interesting was that the leader said to go around and say your name. He specifically stated that the fun of this was that you could use ANY name. Well the teenager gave her name before me. When I said my name, she looked at me with surprise.
After, I asked her how she spelled it and her answer was. "well tonight I spelled it...Joanie!!! She then explained that she used to spell it another way. I told her that my spelling came from my middle initial being E and she looked at me again and she also had a middle initial of E. SOOO there is no doubt in my mind that I was to be there last night!
Patzi, I agree with you...about the interest in the Indian Heritage. I have a heightened interest as well which I am looking forward to learning more about. It has developed on this blog with so many wonderful friends.
I agree about the butterfly, yesterday had lunch with a friend who said it was a symbol for free spirit, I never had heard that. When I read your words about your change of mood, I could totally relate....Have a wonderful day as well. Joanie
Having a wonderful day. Spent a few hours at a pool here reading, Body and Soul, a novel by Frank Conroy. As I sat reading a bright yellow and black butterfly practically landed on my nose!! It spent an hour or so around some lovely fuschia colored flowers. It swirled around me about 3 times...what a smile I got on my face. I looked around and there was only that one butterfly.....:)
Hi Joanie, Had a really fun evening. Didn't see any butterflies, however, and kind of forgot about them. Then, at the last moment, a baby who was sitting with her family nearby turned around and looked at me. She had a butterfly pacifier.:) Patzi
Words creating reality... the origin of thought... while Pirsig reminded us that the word "gun" never shot anyone, Castenadas comments on the power of words ring true in many places.
There are so many threads of discussion, it's hard to narrow down to just one...
But I have been given pause with the idea that Dr. Chopra should "let Tara be HIS guru" and leave it at that. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely agree that children have a brilliant understanding that can make adults seem dull by comparison, but leaving Tara to explain Hermeneutics seems like a cop out. First of all, she WANTS to know... if my kids come to me with a question, something they have a burning desire to understand, or in the very least get my thoughts on, they won't accept "what do you think" as an answer. At the same time, going into a long winded explanation seems wrong too.
I think we need to remember that while it does us good to look upon our children as our teachers, it is also true that they are looking at us to be the same. So the question comes down to productive communication - something that seems to thwart every human endeavor gone wrong. How do we as adults participate with our children in enlightening us both on the true... "nature of things." Their brilliant innocence meeting our worldly, word-mastered understanding. The yin and the yang. Just to say, "communicate with them" does not do the problem justice.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this either. If I did, I'd be far wiser than I am. I can only sit in rapt and often dumbfounded awe at the growing imagination of my children (twin boys, Aidyn and Kai, who will be turning 3 next month). I so want to understand the thoughts that they are experiencing... I so want to share what I have seen with them...
In the end, we seem to reach and unspoken understanding that there is a gap that we can't yet cross... at least not yet through words. As powerful as they are, there are places that words can't go...
Hi Patzi....glad you had a fun evening....I am assuming at the festival. What was there? So you DID see a butterfly..! This is turning into a heavy butterfly weekend for me. I bought a Alicia Keys CD this afternoon as I love piano. I just noticed after the fact that one of the songs is called "Butterflyz". It is beautiful.
So happens that there is a beautiful park here that is having a "Butterfly exhibit". It will be here till Sept 13th. I kept telling myself I wanted to go. I met someone at the pool today who had gone to see the butterflies and said they are gorgeous. We connected as he and his wife have a little girl named Eva. (Eva was with them, 8 months old. This was when the butterfly was flying around today...) I said, "Oh, after one of my fav singers, Eva Cassidy" And guess what, he said that is why they named their daughter Eva..So tomorrow is the day, it just goes with the weekend that I am having. I am going to take my camera and take some pictures of these beautiful creatures. Enjoy tomorrow!

Good Afternoon Joanie . . . thank you for the website . . . how wonderfully fun! May your day be filled with loads of butterfly experiences! Keep Smiling . . .Laila
What fun it must be to explore the mysteries of the universe with Tara! And coming from her pure place, no doubt she'll be able to shed some light on the questions you are exploring!
Thoughts have always seemed like waves on the ocean to me - rising and falling like energy surges in consciousness. They come, and then they go as mysteriously as they came.
As for Tara - how true it is - "...a little child shall lead them..."
God bless!
Love, Donna
Yes Joanie .Your work with the blind illustrates my point.Your students read and write through the use of Braille but they can speak to you and I am sure they do in language that you as their teacher alone will understand .This language of the face the sigh the moan the smile This language speaks louder than words to those who live in the shadows of silence .
Hi Eldora, Nice hearing from you.
I can not imagine how I would be in a world of silence. Most of the blind students here can access technology that allows others to read what they write. Some blinds students in other countries or even in the US do not have access to this technology.
I imagine that one that lives in silence would rely heavy on the printed words if the can access the computer and are literate. I have worked with children who can not talk and they communicate with switches or communication boards.
I have not worked with the deaf/blind, but this population intrigues me. I would hope that with all the technology out there that what ever "handicapable challenge" that one deals with that there would be places to go to get the help one needs in any fashion to "hear and write". It is just different, which is ok. Does this make sense? Joanie
Hi Joanie,
I totally agree with you that advancing technology enhances the ability of the blind and deaf to communicate. However my muse on the value of other forms of communication relates to to a quote in the original blog which stated"Current information theory states that information exists in a domain that transcends space/and time"I posited that perhaps the humans among us who would best be able to explain this would be those who live in the shadows of silence and darkness .
And yes you do make sense to me.Thank you for your response.
I do love this idea another of Dr Chopras bright bright ideas.
Eldora

The man who weaves a magic spell with his words is at loss for words before Tara! It is the purity of a child's mind, a child's soul that creates questions untarnished by anything worldy or complicated by the cacophony of unnecessary baggage that adults bring with each conversation!
May be you found your best teacher!
