Of course I had to check out this blog :D...
I think it's because I'm so interested in saris, but I'm not completely sure, lol
For me, who has never been to India and has hardly met any Indian woman, a sari is a fascinating phenomenon. I did some research on the net a while ago, and a good friend tried to explain how it works, but I'm still not over my curiosity. I understand there are lots of ways to wrap it, lots of rules around the color patterns, great symbolism and tradition around it. If anyone knows of a good site with more info, I'd be grateful to hear about it.
I am in Toronto and I want to know where this act is happening...we will not stand for this.
Ok Rahul, give it up in English LOL
My thought is "Oy Vey!"
Joanie
this is nothing new - didn't krishna pull saris off of his gopi's?

It's interesting that the comment by Suresh states that "we will not stand for this". But what are you really going to do? The sex business is prevalent throughout the world.
You can try to get the local government of Toronto to try and change the laws, but that's highley unlikeley. In the US theyr'e everywhere. The only thing that really would be an outrage would be if illegal acts were being done in these places.
All in all, it's adult entertainment and it's been around for centuries in different cultures "exotic dancing" is not going anywhere. But, prostitution is an entireley different thing.
lets be honest - this is a great way to promote multiculturalism
My first impulse was "I'm going to Toronto!" then I felt guilty about it. Was that my shadow?
Somehow makes me think of the story from the Mahabharata (Hindu mythology) where Draupadi's sari being stipped off her by the Kauravas, but because she is so chaste, the sari cloth grows longer and longer until they give up.

Obviously, this is a completely different and, of course, more realistic scenario. What saddens me is that women continue to sell their bodies, wrapped up (or unwrapped, as the case may be) in their "exotic" culture. I am curious to know exactly who the "Sari Strippers" clientelle is and how many South Asian/Indian men, vs. Western/Canadian men attend such events.
choli ke pecheh kya heh, choli keh pecheh
So what does this mean? Joanie
Damn...this news kinda got me in an up wind...but as i know has been constantly evolvin as human perception on many matters just get more varified ...sari strippin in general would be considered taboo by those traditionally inclined but in the sense of inviduality is it really wrong...hey great way to show your figure i guess......
Since when is six yards of cloth (silk, chiffon, khadi or otherwise) become symbolic of morality? What really tickles me is Suresh's go-get-them attitude!! LOL So technically it's okay to strip down from anything else, err.. as long as it's not a six.something yard thing?
I would in a sense understand if Suresh felt like .. uhm.. taking care of all strip joints in Toronto, to 'not stand for' it because it starts with a Saree.. is ridiculous. How about a Salwar Kameez? Too clumsy? More of Punjabi than Indian to bother about? The Nada doesn't feel all that erotic? So Suresh, what are you against, skin show, or saree-to-skin-show?
And what if the women were to wear bedsheets instead and then take them off???
(I guess in that case it depends on the label of the bedsheet.. hhm?)
All definitions of conventional morality are relative! So what's so immoral if someone decides to strip her sair out of her own free will? How's she harming your sense of values or society's?

When I lived in upstate New York I was invited by some adventurers to travel to Niagara Falls, Ontario to attend the "Canadian Ballet." It was a cultural event I shall never forget. Classic, but not classical.
If you get my meaning...
I suppose I wouldn't be sari if I saw the shows in Toronto either.
International culture and all...
interesting blog, seems like lots of big names are what's special about it. i was shocked to see vikram chatwal, but then not shocked at all to see that he hadn't even posted. guess the emphasis is on celebrity versus content.
joanie, since no one else is courteous enough to explain it, "choli ke peeche" means
"What are you hiding behind that blouse?"
it was a risque bollywood song because of the allusion to breasts, the lyrics however contain an answer like , "That blouse contains my heart". lyrics courtesy of Sepia Mutiny, the excellent group blog who Drumil mentioned earlier.
Joanie, to answer your question, "choli ke pecheh kya heh, choli keh pecheh" translates to "what is behind your blouse." These are actually the lyrics to a Hindi song, believe it or not. Cheesy!
LOL Thank you for the translations!!! I would imagine that in any metropolitan city....if you are looking for strippers, you will find them....all nationalities, skin colors and clothes or no clothes :)
