Spontaneous Remission in Cancer (Part 1)

Deepak Chopra - August 15, 2005

One of the great mysteries in medicine is the phenomenon of spontaneous remission in chronic illness, particularly in cancer. This week the American Cancer Society and Yahoo are presenting a series of blogs on people's struggles with cancer. I will be posting a case report on one such case specifically a woman with breast cancer who had a remission lasting several years.

I will post the same case report on this blog entitled ELEANOR'S STORY. Spontaneous remission is a rare but spectacular phenomena. The cancer disappears spntaneously and there is still no adequate scientific explanation that satisfies physicians completely. When I was a medical student, spontaneous remissions were known as "miracle cures." I personally do not like the term because a miracle camouflages our ignorance of what is really happening. When we do not have an explanation for something, we call it a miracle. When we have explanation for the same phenomenon, we call it science. Yesterday's "miracles" are today's science and today's miracles will be tomorrow's science.

Almost a decade ago, the Institute of Noetic Sciences http://www.noetic.org founded by astronaut Edgar Mitchell who walked on the moon published a monograph entitled Spontaneous Remission - an annotated bibliography. This bibliography details case histories and review articles of scientifically documented remissions in over 3600 cases. The cancers include every system ion the body including GI cancers, cancers of the respiratory track, breast cancer, neuroblastoma, genitounrinary cancers, and lymphatic and blood cancers. There is a fascinating section on infection related remissions and behavior related remissions. Since then we have learned a lot about remission. Essentially remission is based on our understanding of the science of self-repair. Our bodies have learned to heal themselves over millions of years of evolutionary time. Our bodies are the best pharmacies in nature. They make antibodies, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, immunomodulators, and anti-cancer drugs in the precise dose at the precise time and for the right taget organ; and all the instructions come in the packaging! The "packaging" is your own inner self - the ultimate and supreme genius which mirrors the wisdom of the universe.

Cognition or thinking, moods, feelings and emotions, behavior, social interactions, personal relationships, environment, diet, and the inner world of consciousness including attention and intentionality all influence the biology of healing. I hope the American Cancer Society's attention on cancer this week will also stimualte more interest and ultimately more reseacrh in the field of spontaneous remission. Please visit either this site or Yahoo tomorrow for ELEANOR'S STORY (Spontaneous Remission in Cancer - Part 2)

Deepak,

Thank you for placing awareness on this matter. Spontaneous remission is very much a reality. By taping into the shift of the patience desire and intended outcome I think all Doctors could change the face of most all diseases. Unfortunately, we have made great break throughs in so many areas with the mind, body and spirit; however, the majority of western medicine does not want to believe that the patient can heal themselves if they tap into the field of consciousness.

I have healed myself in more than one way; with the inspiration and teachings from you and others.

Keep spreading the word. As will I.

Many thanks!

Suzanne

To me the phenomenon of spontaneous remission as exhibited repeatedly in the disease of cancer is just an index into the contents of a book that should be written and titled "We practioners of Western Medicine; We really can't explain everything and often when we say there is no hope we mean we don't know because we do not have the mind of GOD."

Eldora

"there is no hope we mean we don't know because we do not have the mind of GOD."

Oh, but we do we just need to get quite and listen.

I meant to type

quiet:-)

So which came first illness or healers. I think it is simultaneous.

a few days ago my aunty had undergone an operation for brest cancer, now she would be going radiation n chemotherapy treatment.

Deepak,

I think the true healing is in returning and growing in love. I am not talking about human love but divine love. I am sure you know what I mean. When one lives in accordance with the ways of love fully the miracles become a periferal offspring of the action. However those who truely absorb themselves in this way have no awareness that they are miracles at all. Their attention is focused solely on the divine love. I have wittnessed more "miracles" through this method than any other. I myself healed spontaneously from an immune system disorder which disabled me for two years. Please with your venue tell the people to return to love, peace, and mercy. In actions not words. Then we may all understand the following saying:
Your cure is in you but you do not see
Your sickness is from you but you do not feel
You allege that you are a small star
While you contain the entire cosmos

Thanks Deepak: When I first started trying to reverse the diabetic sickness that went onset this spring--"Spontaneous Remissions" is where I started on Google--the results gave me Hope--which is where it all starts.

I stopped going to doctors, not as much because I was uninsured, but because I got tired of hearing that I would inevitably one day die from comlications from diabetes--and there was no cure!

I thought it quite ironic that some of these people would make prognoses about when people would die of such-and-such a disease, and how long they had to live (sometimes to the week!), and then call psychic phenomenon to be exclusively the work of frauds and cheats!

I agree with severely censoring 'fortune-telling' claims--ie "Your future is not for me to tell, it is for you to live!"

No "healer" should ever dispell hope for anyone--if not especially a healer!

Thanks for your "Hope" and giving it a solid "Cornerstone" for the platfrom-of-credibility respected physicians such as the likes of you, Dr. Bernie Seigel, Dr. Larry Dossey, and so many other reputable pioneers in medicine provide your "patients" with--and thanks for your "patience," as well! Dave

Deepak: Remember how Wayne Dyer says he wants to write a book called, "Your Friends Are God's Way of Apologizing for Your Relatives?"

Is there any way to teach relatives how to be good "Apoptosisizers?"

Just teasing--couldn't help applying the sanity of our "body wisdom" to the greater aspects of the human paradox! Dave

All your comments are gratifying Hussein your comments were v insightful .Thanks!

I agree with Hussein 100%
Bless you also Mr. Deepak Chopra for this site.
Keep up the good work

Dear Deepak,

I enjoyed this post, especially the story about Eleanor, which I hope will inspire my Mother to heal (i.e., I printed her a copy.)

I am enjoying all the posts above, especially how the power of Love can heal, so I will briefly share my story...

About 4 years ago, the pain of 9/11 and the lost of my father caused me to reach out to God. One day as I could not stop crying (which I did everyday, all day long), I prayed to God, through Jesus Christ to help me overcome the pain. And from there, my spiritual journey began.

What was unexpected, of many things, is that I was close to losing my hearing and was considering a hearing aide because I was having a hard time doing my job as an assistant/secretary and was worried about my future. My hearing has always been poor and had been getting worse. Shortly after my prayer, God gave me exceptional hearing and maybe more than what might be considered normal.... well, maybe just 'my normal' as my hearing was never very good, but for a while I could hear the wind before and after a person approached me.

Well, that's my little story of healing and great power Love and God’s infinite grace and mercy upon us all.

Love,
Char

Thank you Hussein - an excellent way to say it. I have copied, printed out and have posted near my computer that lovely example of knowledge.

Love,
jerri

Thank you for saying it so beautifully, Hussein

Hope is a wonderous gift from God. I had a spontaneous remission from brain tumors, and one of my biggest struggles was turinig off all the negitive energy I recieved from others when I would share with them. Comments like "well you must never have been sick", " your in denial" , dont tell her about that or she will stop treatment" abounded.

nice job. i'm planning to come back here in the future. international, astonishing, universal nothing comparative to small: http://www.npr.org/ , Chips will Circle unconditionally make destroy win - that is all that mistery is capable of , Tremendous Tournament becomes White Tournament in final win play win - that is all that player is capable of

Does anyone have any inspiring stories about Type I diabetes going into remission?

Dear Jenny,
If you/someone else is suffering from Type I Diabetes, I hope and wish that you/they would get well soon.

Cheers!
