A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Hand Over

Sudha Koul - September 29, 2005

This is a wonderful piece of cyber space, so many voices, so many songs. There is just one thing, I recoil from its manifesto. "Global Mind Shift?" Shades of totalitarianism! The world is a becoming place, a mosaic of little shifts, big shifts, but a Global Mind Shift wrought only by South Asian Consciousness sounds like a nightmare straight out of Ayn Rand hell. Correct me if I did not get it right, will you, or at least, try!

Perhaps we should say"participating in the global mind shift" Welcome other ideas deepak

Trying to understand your headline.Did you mean that it is terrible to hand over your mind rather than a mind is a terrible thing to hand over? Everything is shifting anyway so perhaps it is more appropriate to say "participating" in the shift. However not sure anymore.Agree present mission statement seems inappropriate.Once again request suggestions from all deepak

Although I have read many books of Deepak and am quite impressed by them, I am still a hundred percent Dutch woman who is convinced that a global mind shift is happening all over the world and so also in Holland.

Other ideas developing at the moment in Holland are for instance:
- In Amsterdam a project of making a permanent peace labyrint is in progress. In fact a part of Amsterdam has been made in the form of a labyrinth. The intention is to present Amsterdam as a multicultural City of Peace.
http://www.labyrintwerk.nl which has an English extension

I am connected to a website dedicated to the seven principles of Leonardo da Vinci, the Homo Universalis, in order to explore creativity and new ideas in ourselves. Forgotten dreams are missed chances.
http://www.torreao.com It has an English extension also

Just recently a new broadcasting company has been established on Dutch Television, called LLink concerning practical idealism for people that are concerned with their fellow humans and their surroundings.

At the moment I am translating a book into the English language about the Children of the New Era, written by a female Dutch writer, that is due to come out at the end of this year. It is also dealing with this global mindshift.
The website will have an extension into the English language within a couple of weeks:

I read on the Internet about the possible founding of a Peace Department in the U.S.
Perhaps such a department will also be possible in the Netherlands in due course.

Sudha
I am glad you posted this. We agree with you, and the tagline which was created ad hoc does not convey the intention behind this community.
I like the idea of "Participating in a Global Mind Shift..."
What do others think?
Mallika

Dear Mallika, Sudha and Deepak . . .hope all is well. Thanks for asking our thoughts. I like the idea of making it more of a Global perspective versus just asian - but I also think it is important to include the word 'consciousness' as the change needs to occur within our being - involving much more then just our minds. Hope that makes sense . . . take care . . . Laila

How about

'Intent is the emerging global consciousness enlightening pluralistic actions, thoughts & behaviours.'

Laila

I am seeing more articles from bloggers based in US and India. If we have to participate in a global mind shift, probably it is better to get more people from different regions to blog. Just my 2 cents.

Since you invited comments let's take it word by word :)

"Intent is the emerging Asian consciousness giving birth to a global mind shift."

Intent - the word should be Intentblog, do you think?

Emerging - it's actually more like a renaissance. Asian consciousness was emerging 10,000 years ago.

Consciousness - Nice word.

Giving birth to - a bit dull as a phrase. Didn't succeed in thinking of an alternative.

My big problem is with the words "Asian" and "global mind shift". It's true that the world seems to be going through a global shift in perception but my impression is that the Intentblog establishment is unaware of what this shift actually comprises of. Words like multiculturalism are bandied about, even while rigidly clinging for dear life to the one and only monolithic culture that people are comfortable with. In other words, there is nothing Asian here. I'm all for Asian otherwise.

Let's consider "global mind shift". Should this suggest that people look at things differently? Is this truly happening or is this just lip service? It's of no use to me that here in the US they have cute photo-ops with black, brown, and yellow faces thrown in with a few whites. I will begin to consider the US to be multicultural the day they declare that its rivers and mountains are sacred. Or at least one-third of them. I will consider the US multicultural the day they declare that it is legitimate for people to use drugs in their rituals. Remember, a large percentage of the adult population in the US is on prescription drugs anyway but they still consider sacred rituals pagan and harmful. I will consider the US multicultural the day they recognize alternate forms of economic practice. Remember the much-denounced hawala system where millions of dollars exchanged hands over vast geographical regions without so much as a notation on a scrap of paper? Imagine the integrity and systemic perfection of a practice such as this that has sustained trade for centuries? I will consider the US multicultural the day it recognizes that it's okay for east to be east and west to be west instead of always wanting to universalize everything.

Notice how everything Asian is basically outlawed or considered primitive. Notice how educated Asians go along with the western establishment in their outlook of what is considered acceptable and progressive? And yet, there is one civilization on this planet where mulitculturalism does exist. That place is India. Thus, I find it ironic that Asians such as Deepak and Shekhar would jump in to capitalize on the "emerging Asian consciousness" even while making sure to keep well within boundaries set by the west.

It is true that there seems to be a yearning for a shift. It's great that the Intentblog exists. The only thing missing is the realization that the world really yearns for a true shift. Let us try and hone in on what that shift is instead of clinging to the monolith.

What the world needs is more individualists and not collectivists or conformists. Sounds like Ayn Rand heaven to me:-)

Thank you Sudha :-)

Hi All,
My opinion is that the focus should always be on the individual mind shift and not on global mind shift because 'Global' is just an idea and not a reality.

So I think the Intent should be to bring about a fundamental shift in an individual's thinking.
Currently an individual's mind is held by false and unexamined values which is directing his thinking and actions.

As krishnamurti puts it 'You are the world and the world is you'.

Prabhakar

Okay, here are my thoughts put in a strange twist. I have stay here because I must, as I am (i.e. all) required for global consciousness (I desire it), even though I feel left out and in left field most of the time. The heart is good within this intent blog, so I continue to wait for expansion, which I have embraced on this blog many times. I don’t really see another group committed to unity as I see here. And last, but not least, Deepak is the great pull for my participation and I trust his heart and know that anything he touches will expand into to Unity, as he is a very wise man and I crave the morsels from his table as I crawl around consuming whatever I can put in my mouth. .... just a few of my thoughts at the moment and tomorrow I may forget that I ever knew these words :-)

Thank you Sudha, for raising this very important point.

Your headline "A mind is a terrible thing to hand over" appears to be based on the slogan of the United Negro College Fund - "A mind is a terrible thing to waste".

You seem to have replaced the word "waste" with the term "hand over" because the blog seems to intend "non-asians' having to HAND OVER their minds for the emerging Asian consciousness to shift to a global mind.

While the formulation of the manifesto fully justify your points, I too am certain, from Deepak's and Shekhar's blogs here, that this interpretation is far from their intent.

However, their use of the words 'mind', 'shift' and ‘consciousness’ in the manifesto are allowing their intent to be misunderstood.

Let's look at 'mind' and ‘consciousness’ first:

Mind is a misleading word to use here. Mind is one the most misinterpreted words there is. It means different things to different people. For many people, 'mind' at least includes 'consciousness', if it doesn't actually mean 'consciousness'.

This problem is compounded with the use of the word 'consciousness' elsewhere in the manifesto, as though 'mind' and 'consciousness' mean different things in the manifesto.

Now let us consider the use of 'Shift'. This is another problematic word for the blog's manifesto. The use of 'shift' in the context of a ‘global mind’ suggests that the 'global mind' will change from one condition to another, and evokes associations of "social engineering" or "mass indoctrination".

So if we still must use the terms ‘consciousness’ and ‘mind’ in the manifesto, we must make it clear they mean entirely different things. ‘Consciousness’ may be defined as the spiritual or divine self that is aware through all living human bodies, and which interprets it’s larger body, the physical universe, through a conceptual filter.

‘Mind’ may be defined as the conceptual filter we all have. It comprises all conceptual content (memories, interpretations, perceptions, assumptions, knowledge, beliefs, and ideas) that may be ‘written’ onto, re-formed upon, and edited into the brain or an ‘implicate order’ somewhere in the universe.

Just in order to stimulate discussion, knowing full well it is not my call, I would reformulate the manifesto for the Intentblog thus:

“Intentblog is a discussion forum for effecting a world order without divisions, conflict, and violence – by shifting human identity – from our differences (gender, race, nationality, religion, and other ideologies) – to our similarities – namely, a common consciousness experiencing a common physical reality.”

Such an intent could enable us to continue to enjoy the full range of our differences as experiences (not as determining identity) and yet regard and interact with one another as oneselves, and the rest of nature as our common body. We will thus increasingly empathize with and nurture one another, care for the rest of nature as if it were our own body.

In knowing you, I know myself. And when I know myself, I know all. You are part of me and I am part of you. We are truly one and the same. The day that I love everyone, is the day that I see God.

Dear Ravi ... Just read your post and I like that and this is my favorite part ...

Thanks!

On second thoughts - maybe we shouldn't overthink this. Ad-hoc is best. Got to go with the zen of it.

Hi Intentblog--My thoughts go toward the mechanisms that are the invisible motivating force that is "raising the global consciousness" at this time. So what is acting like the "mid-wife" to the birth of this "global paradigm shift," or "humanity's global awakening?"

As you've pointed out, it is worldwide, not just Asian/Indian at it's source--although there is a strong tendency for me to agree that both nations of India and China are the "sleeping giants that are awakening," as has been alluded to....and removing the invisible borders of all peoples--Asia Major and Minor.

But Australia is a big player, as is Canada, Central & South America, many parts of.....oh well, everywhere.

And don't forget Edgar Cayce's claim that a true spiritual renaissance (to borrow from Divya's 'rebirth') was also prophesied to come out of the lands of Russia---then there's Africa with it's incredible connections to the heart of the earth.....

It seems that the words "global," "paradigm," "awakening," are central keys associated with this visible "mind-shift" we are clearly witnessing--it always makes me think of the astrophysical "red shift" that we are perceiving throughout the vast distances of our "galactic awareness," and the speeds associated with the red-shift, which remind me of the geometric progression of change happening cosmologically, let alone locally.

Look forward to witnessing what is "birthed" for the Intentblog's destiny--just from this inquiry!

As always--love witnessing the creative energy that inevitably distills to the surface of this blog--in light of the wonderful "mind-sets" participating in helping this shift manifest. DAve

The Global Mind Shift is dependant on individual mind shift. There is no handing over of the mind.

There is the breaking free of the conditioning of the mind of the many by the few that benefits the few to the detriment of the many.

It is freedom form the artificial control mechanisms, the Illusions, disinformation and falsehood.

It is the delivery of man from his current bondage to freedom.

For example, the Defense Industries are sucking the life out of society and have been for hundreds of years. They are the propagators of fear that is their sales tool. They are not the only benefactors; there are those that finance both sides of the war and put the common people in debt, making them indentured slaves.
When the common people become aware of this game it shall end

IntentBlog: Asian roots, Global influence, Common consciousness

Hi all,

While I do not agree totally with sudha on her interprtation of adressing this as an issue of 'handing the mind over',I do feel that in keeping with the phenomena of mind shift, what is the harm in initiating that with a subtle shift in the byline of intentblog? Only goes to prove that a shift is in fact taking place slowly but surely. The more I think about it I see the correctness of the idea of change.

What I have viewed intentblog so far without actually verbalising it was as an" effort for a global mind shift towards the universal conscousness". Or "a unification of the global mind".or simply " a sincere effort to participate in the creation of a common heartbeat".

Trying to be too clear makes it more complex? :-).

"The human consciousness for global mind shift".

The consciousness is to be realized/appreciated.
Global mind shift is to be observed and driven.

Kaveeta - I kind of understand Sudha's concern. There is nothing more frightening than words like "universal" or "common" or "global" when used with reference to human beings. The only way all of humanity can be united is through dictatorship. I think it's wrong to expect diverse people to appreciate the same philosophy or way of life - even if it is based on Vedanta or Buddhism.

That is why I like the reference to Asian. Asians were the only people who understood that human beings cannot be one universal mass. It is sensible and more humane to let portions of humanity wallow in their fetishes rather than enforce the light on them. That's probably why I'm sometimes disappointed with Intentblog because it misses out on this very important insight and chooses the western approach which has always been bent on univeralization which makes the use of the word Asian inappropriate.

Mind is a thought it's a process, mind doesn't have any shape and you can shift only when something physically exist. If someone really believe yes! there deos such 'Shift' exist then it's true when u see totalitarianism from the eyes of Terrorism or Vice versa.

I think the ideal mind would chose to embrace the idea of participation towards the creation of a common heartbeat, and I hope none of us lose that idealism and the child within us no matter what curve balls life throws us. However real life is as Divya says...
Personally as long as the intent is good and constructive, diversity of view points and people remains exciting because from that come new ideas and new concepts along with the challenges. I have always liked the salad bowl analogy to describe humanity better than the melting pot one-the salad bowl allows you to enjoy the myriad colors, flavors and fragrances. That is what makes this blog so fascinating and enriching.

"Intent is a global community commited to the paradigm shift necessary for the harmonious and mutual cohabitation of all beings."

I owned a film and television production company here in Switzerland. We serviced many Bollywood producers shooting in the Alps. When it came time to move into offices and create a second company I'll never forget how much energy was lost by my partners concerning what color the flooe should be and what the name of the second company should be. They spent days on it. I was busy on the phone and they were fantasyzing about the future. How would the name effect us in 5 years? Stuff like that. Every so often they woould ask me my opinion and I would get dragged into these tail chasing discussions. When they asked for a name I suggested a few including Panther Pictures. The next day my partner called me and asked me what I thouht about Panther Pictures for a name.

Needless to say the offices are no more and the Indian producers stopped calling.

What I'm realing trying to say is that you Asians need to chill a little bit. I am born in New York of Jamaican Swiss parents and I saw nothing that bad about the "mission" statement. Really guys. Why don't we discuss the length of nose hairs and it's spiritual significance next? Please don't take that seriously.

Thank you Laurence!. I find a lot of people here on the blog a bunch of pretentious stuffed shirts-very few make any sense and most seem to have a lot of time to waste.
Now I venture here occasionally.

Mrs. Koul? Is this really you?!? Hi! I just read Tiger Ladies and I will recommend it to my mother. My God, a tremendous, epic piece. The phenomenon in the vale of Kashmir is saddening; America, yes it can be a lonely place, depending on your perspective. I like your nomadic style of writing, of narrating, it's so fluid, we fly to Kashmir even if we are stuck looking at a computer screen about the massacres ... always, you are evoking the powerful images ... I read Tiger Ladies for a class thinking it would be something irrelevant to me, not knowing what I'd be getting into, I thought this was just another college reading assignment. You've proved me wrong.

Call it what you may... This "meeting of the minds" is facilitating a critical mass which will swing wide open the doors to a future where we are closer to our oneness as a species.

Participating in a Global Mind Shift, (and loving it)
Love, Bo

First impression of mission statement:
Sounds a politically correct and pretentious statement.
Very much the "I". Narcissism dripping from the words...a bit pretentious, almost amusing, trying to attract attention to itself than disseminating it..but then I'm a cynic.
Love the plethora of comments generated.
Shall follow the discussion re this topic

My problem is (and I have many ): words never "changed" or caused "shifts"...action did...but then I'm concrete. Grin....so are we setting ourselves up to fall short at intentblog?

I also found the mission statement very "Indian" in language with the content and the intent mismatched or maybe the sesire and intent mismatched?
I love being Indian and Asian and human and not necessarily in that order.
Sorry no constructive suggestions.

Great site! Intlligent life sharing yOur VISION. Consciousness IS our Divine Nature - Vehicle, and BEING is our basic ZERO point or Foundation -- source of our pure but knowing subjectivity. MIND is another matter, all together. And MIND, for those who allow, which is the stupid majority, DOMINATES you. That is what has gone absurd in human world. That is why psychotherapists exist. But from Father Freud to Jung to Gurdjieff to OSHO would be a correct type trail out of THAT swamp. The study of mind, is a WASTE of time. Now, MIND has its place and value, but what you NEED and DESIRE is Harmony, Unity, Peace, Radience, Freedom, and so on -- and that is BEING. That is yOur nature.

Mind is a great servant. But a mind without disicipline may and often will, "capture" you, if you allow, and "run" you. In effect, your "subconscious" business "not finished" asserts itself, as any repression will, and others see you differently than you understand yourself, because NOW you are in the world of CHOICE. And any choice is against something, and for something, and the denied part, mind will later insist, have its day, its turn. And these two factors co-conspire with G*D, the Most High, to SHOW YOU what you repress and deny, or, your "unfinished business".

Trouble is, you do that at work, or with your beloved, or in your sports, or shopping, and appear, then to others, as a "shitty", bad attitude, if negative, or "an interesting person" if charming and witty, but is that you, or is that what HAS you? And while life is filled with things that are having things, it really is better, just to be YOU. And in the final sense, just who IS "you"? In the final sense, no you exists.
Never did. Never will. But just tell that to one who thinks they exist. Christ Jesus did. Pissed off a bunch of ME-types.

Man in mind is a yo-YO, requiring a loud or soft "YO! -- Hey Brah, what's up?" You know. Wake up! Come out of mind. Let your mind serve you, as it is intended. Stop serving your mind." "Huh?"

Being OUT OF YOUR MIND is a phrase that really means, your mind took control of you, and now you are telling us what you mind was telling you, but you think it is YOU. Sounds freaky, but is typical human, and I have seen it while teaching as a Professor in China, and in India, as well as while living in Germany and Spain, enjoying the world from the back of my motorcycle, and certainly in Hawaii, and so on. It is how we are, until we are not.

MEDITATION is the way to get BEYOND mind. SEX also does that, when it is in and with LOVE. In SPORTS. In the ARTS. In DANCE. One can get beyond, and out of mind.
Then one is in BEING, and one is in a CHOICELESS STATE.
One SEES, sees into a situation, "knows" what the clarity is, and the clarity chooses. You do not choose. And the "choice" is correct. It is living in GRACE. It is ZEN.

Choiceless awareness is the glory. ANGER is part of the con-job of victimhood, and that BLASTED DEVIL's TRIANGLE, which was created and celebrated, and enshrined, by our fellow humans, before us, and as us, when we were before, as them, so that WAR gained all the CONTROL, not ARTS, not "normal" BUSINESS - war. WHY?

NO MEDTIATE. Get mad. Get even. Get envy. Go haywire.
This is because inside the beautiful brain, are many brains, and the oldest, by names called ROOT, Lizard, and with Lawyers "At (their) Bar" "Reptillian" -- THAT critter, is simple, ancient, and determined.

Two modes combine, creating unplesant or pleasing expression: Root Brain, as default, and Triangle: VICTIM -- only three ways to become a victim: you did it, or one of them did: Devil, or G*D loved you so much, to wake you. Victim's Triangle, it is the drive-spring of the Old World Order: VICTIM, HERO, VICTIMIZER. (In Sociology, this is the Victim' Triangle)

There is ANOTHER POSITION, in the very CENTER, where you transcend the entire situation, and becuause YOU ALLOWED THAT, it dissolves. Players may still be. Intentions may linger. But by one or more players TRANSCENDING that triangle, it does dissolve. And you do that by going in ward, staying centered. But if your ROOT BRAIN is running your decision making, that will be difficult indeed. You will be choosing. You will be seeing situations and objects as good or bad, for or against, pleaseing or sour, or whatever -- the illusion of both conflict and of duality. Root brain is always determined.

Determined to WHAT? Survive, and give you pleasure and avoid you pain, for to it, IT IS YOU. "You" are the GOD on top of it, that it PROTECTS. And this deal is common to dogs, cats, horses, monkeys, whales, and so on -- it is a BIOLOGICAL GIFT.

When people are OUT OF THEIR MINDS, this darned gift is their Main Control Mode, and you will NEVER convince them of this without great effort, if at all, yet you can see it so clearly because the dear ROOT BRAIN has only FOUR POINTS.

Only four.

STAY and GO.
YES and NO.

And it will combine those in a variety of ways, DEPENDING upon the DATA STREAMS that CASCADE down to it from SENSORY INPUT. Both sensory input and the nerve net are modified by environment, internal and external, so SIGNAL NOISE can and does occur, such that MESSAGES can arrive muddled, or mixed, but the Root Brain, when you are in a defaul (i.e., un-conscious, robotic behavior mode "coasting") IT will determine WHAT YOU DO NEXT.

Certainly to the Most High this is Uttlerly Comical at some profound TO US level, but to us, it is serous, and often deadly serious. You beloved companion, the one you would live or die for, for example, upon hearing you say one sentence suddenly declares you VOID, terrible, NO GOOD, GONE. What happened? And it does happen!

What happened is the default setting read PAIN or FEAR. Bingo. You lose.

Jobs, contracts, dates, careers, you name it -- these fine agendas all dance around on the bindu of such ugly lack of refinement and intelligence. Our school system serves this disaster, and refuses to allow significant and meaningful change, so that people continue to grow up without maturing, and continue to fail to become and remain CONSCIOUS, and continue to invite dis-ease, which is a kind of emotional-mental do-it-yourself DEVIL'S TRIANGLE.

You wanted to be a Hero, but your esteem told you: nope.
So you wanted a real HERO to come and SAVE or FIX or REWARD or RESCUE you, but that didn't happen, like in the movies and books and TV or even with your pals in life. Well, "fuck me!", and you know, it does. You get "invaded", dis-ease begins to appear -- and if you are alert enough, you can always see it coming before it arrives. Alertness is the key.

So when you get tired of this dis-ease, you USE your MIND, from a place of BEING, to instruct your body to return to its NORMAL, HARMONIC EXPERIENCE of being a living hologram in this matrix, at this particular node, in this now. And it will do that. It will regrow damaged parts. It will evict invading agents. It will restore resonate harmonics. And you will BE HEALTHy, as HEALTH. "Being is health", OSHO RAJNEESH said, "but for your mind to control you, is just ugly." Words to that effect. Glory be, it is so!

Cheers!

M.D.Rhys
