Locked Out of Everything and Water

Mohit Rajhans - September 01, 2005

I've been away for a bit, not because of anything exciting but more so because I've been locked out by Canada's public broadcasting company, The CBC.

I have not had any access to my emails etc so things have been very weird. However I now have a great distraction. The Toronto Film Fest and I'm going to fill all of you in on what is going on this year including the first bit of exciting news one week prior to the start of the fest. Fox Searchlight has acquired U.S. distribution rights to writer-director Deepa Mehta's "Water," which will open the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 8. Pic is Mehta's third feature in her "elemental trilogy." First two films were "Fire" (1996) and "Earth" (1998). I have seen the film and will post a full review later this weekend.

Off to the picket line.......

Searchlight sips 'Water'

Mehta pic to preem at Toronto fest Sept. 8

Production on the controversial pic had to be shut down in India in 2000 following rioting by fundamentalist Hindus and death threats aimed at Mehta. Five years elapsed before the production restarted secretly in Sri Lanka.

"Water" was produced by David Hamilton ("Bollywood/Hollywood") and exec produced by Doug Mankoff of Echo Lake Prods. and Mark Burton of Accomplice Films. Pic was financed by David Hamilton Prods., Echo Lake Prods. and Telefilm Canada.

In a joint statement, Searchlight prexy of marketing Nancy Utley and exec VP of production Claudia Lewis said they were "humbled that Deepa has entrusted us" with her film, calling it "a labor of love for everyone at Fox Searchlight."

Set in colonial India during Mahatma Gandhi's rise to power, "Water" follows a young Hindu girl who is forced to live in a home for widows.

"Water" stars Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas and Bollywood regular John Abraham. The role of its 8-year-old central character is played by Sarala, a young Sri Lankan with no prior experience as a film actor. Speaking neither Hindi nor English, Sarala learned her lines phonetically, directed by Mehta through an interpreter.

Mehta also co-wrote and directed "Republic of Love," based on the novel of the same name by Carol Shields, starring Bruce Greenwood and Amelia Fox, and "Camilla," a Canadian/U.K. co-production that starred Jessica Tandy and Bridget Fonda.

For television, she directed several episodes of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," produced by George Lucas for ABC.

"Water" will be released in Canada on Nov. 4 by Mongrel Media.

Hey who is the stars of Water I thought Shabanna Azmi and Akshay Kumar were in it.....

I am in Toronto and I am very proud of the South Asian scene in our Country. I hope that everyone can see Water when it is released. I also hate what the CBC is showing right now so please find a way to resolve the strike. CBC is one of the wrolds best media orgs.

Mohit - sorry to hear about you being locked out. Dam those Unions. I can't wait to see Water , I hear it is her best work.
Sab

John Abraham seems be everywhere now and his new film Body can be found at a local Blockbuster near you.

Looking forward to the release of Water. I think Indian films are rediscovering that a good story is ultimately what you need, as so many films that are being released today lack precisely that element.

You must be exhausted after watching films at a festival. I always find myself drained after attending one of the film festivals as it really tests your mental capacities quite a bit, especially if you watch three films in a single day or more.

Sorry...I guess I wasn't paying attention. There are so many film festivals going on, I wasn't really aware of the Toronto festival, which is yet to begin.

Water will sink in India as will she. Her fims are not for everyone and she just wants to stir the pot. Put some thought into your films Deepa seriously. Bollywood/Hollywood was awful and Earth was okay Start making good films and maybe india too wil embrace you.

Hi Mohit we wondered where you were.
Welcome back :)

Hi Mohit... jeepers, I've lived in Toronto my whole life and I wasn't even aware that there was a strike at the CBC. Major "Doh" moment on my part. Are you working with TIFF as well? I always love this time of year with the festival here and I hope Mehta's film is a big hit.

Love, Sheba

Hi Sheb;
Ya most people are a little unsure of what is happening at CBC. I am covering TIFF for a few media outlets in the city (Omni, 640 Toronto) Water is a visual feast yu will enjoy it. Other films to check out would be Amu and Dreaming Lhasa.

Thanks, Mo ;-)

I will definitely try to check out those films and I will look for your coverage. Need any help? :-)

Mohit,

Will you also be going to the Ottawa Film Festival? Joanie
