Beauty and Ugliness met on the shore of a sea.
And they said to one another, "Let us bathe in the sea."
Then they disrobed and swam in the waters. And after a while Ugliness came back to shore and garmented himself with the garments of Beauty and walked away.
And Beauty too came out of the sea, and found not her raiment, and she was too shy to be naked, therefore she dressed herself with the raiment of Ugliness. And Beauty walked her way.
And to this very day men and women mistake the one for the other.
Yet some there are who have beheld the face of Beauty, and they know her notwithstanding her garments. And some there be who know the face of Ugliness, and the cloth conceals him not from their eyes.
This is one of my favorite fables from Kahlil Gibran.
Last night as I sat up till 3 a.m. unable to sleep because of a cold and a hacking cough watching images of the aftermath of Katrina, the ugliness of humanity at its worst against its wounded and helpless brothers and sisters, alternating with the beauty of compassion from other segments of humanity, I remembered this story.
Just as we mistake one for the other when we get dazzled by the external, that same beauty and ugliness lies within us.
I pray that the beauty within prevails.

Excellent !!! This is exactly what I was looking for for last few days, some words of sanity, some words of wisdom. Much needed post. Thank you very much.
Hi Kavita,May I suggest a home remedy for your cold?Take 2 cups of water, add few leaves of lemongrass,2 tsp of grated fresh ginger,4 crushed cloves, bring it to a boil, keep boiling till reduced to a cup,add 1,or 2 tsp of honey and drink it hot.I Hope you feel better soon.
Kavita That is a beautiful post.I have read that there are three kinds of people on this planet earth.
1,One third of the earth's population are earth bound. This is their domain. They are innately selfish.Everything they do, they think, is based on "what is in it for me".These are the ugly people inside. They are also called dark entities. These are the people who do not know what compassion is.Their garments,as beautifully described in the poem may be enchanting. But the essence is evil.
2, then there are another third who belong to the astral other side. They are not of this physical earth. They are innately good.Their thoughts ,their deeds are always good.Their motto in life is "let us do what is best for everybody,Let us serve God by serving His people".These are the beautiful people.Their beauty shines even if they are wearing ugly garments. They come to earth with all kinds of divine guidance, their lives are full of miracles. They are White entities.(not the color of the skin)
3,then there are the third group.this group is good most of the time, but suddenly they do something that is so not good, that they are difficult to figure out.these are the gray entities. They say half of these turn dark and the other half turn white.
Kavita in vedanta,I have read about Tamasic,Rajasic, and Sattwic people.Take care. God bless.
Thank you Geeta for your thoughtfulness. I have the ingredients and I will try it right away.
Yes there are the tamasic, rajasic and satwic people but I feel we have a little of it all within us. Circumstances bring out the best and the worst in us.
Amen, Kavita,
I pray that the beauty prevails too. And agree that we all have a little of it all within ourselves. Circumstances can bring out a monster, that we may not like to own.
And yet, the beauty is that once we own the monster, the same circumstances can bring out our beauty!
Here's another really good cold remedy. Boil a pot of water. Add some cayenne, lemon and maple syrup. Will clear you right up and is quite yummy too.
Beauty and Ugliness met on the shore of the sea. Then they said to one another let us disrobe and bathe in the sea.
And so it was that the two ,which to the uninitiated seemed two, but were actually One ,with their dualities manifested ,went into the sea. The sea of Maya.
They swam and emerged transformed.Maya had played her tricks.
And it was then that ugliness garmented herself with the garments of beauty and walked away.
To this day we find ourselves enmeshed in the clutches of maya . We strive for external beauty. Inner beauty too walks besides us like a shadow if we turn around to cast a glance. But she is too poor, yoo unsupported , too alone.
Ugliness has reached pinnacles of success . The world adores her. Wants to emulate her. She goes from strength to strength. The world is her oyster and she doesnt have a care.
And then one day, she turns around. Where was the shadow? How dare she desert her? She's furious. She looks some more. Where was the World? Where have they gone ? She was dumbfounded. She was alone. She panicked. Ran helter skelter. She had to find Beauty. yes. Only she knew the truth . She was not beauty. She had to look for the real one
She ran towards the sea. Breathless. Her garments torn and tattered. Where was beauty. Would she ever find her ? God ! she felt so alone .Was she doomed forever? There was no one in sight. She prayed . She cried for mercy. She craved for the innocence she once had. Just when she had given up, she turned around with tear filled eyes. Here was beauty. Calm, serene. glowing . Even more radiant. Inner wisdom ,knowledge detachment and silence were her adornments. Beauty took the hand of ugliness and with a smile led her into the sea.
They wlked as far as the eye could see. and finally disappeared ..AS ONE. Never to emerge again. Even Maya could not hold a sway on them anymore. Duality had vanished. Oneness had won.
Even to this day ,humanity goes to the sea to find the peace that Beauty had shown Ugliness. It has been said that if you go there as a seeker , Beauty smiles on you.
With humble apologies to Kahlil Gibran
apologies to Gibran indeed. That was pathetic kaveetaa. stick to what you do-yoga or whatever and let the other Kavita do the writing
Kaveetaa,I think what you wrote is beautiful. Our planet is exactly as you described. How sometimes Tamasic and Rajasic qualities predominate and we feel lost and long for the Sattwic.Soooo beautifully illustrated by that fable.God bless you Kaveetaa.

Thanks a million for the kind words. It takes one sattvik mind to recognise another. My post was meant for those who take this blog seriously . Sometimes by condemning ,we expose only our own limitations. Truth doesnt need validation. It just IS. Beauty Smiles. Ugliness spews venom.
If anything.life has taught me that experience should make man better not bitter. I choose to get better everyday every moment.Intolerance for anothers point of view is nothing short of fanaticism. I thought that the intent of this intentblog was to accept .
Ever wondered why Lord Krishna loved the flute? It was because it was empty within. And then he created mesmerizing music. Trying to aspire that we empty ourselves of all our pre conditioning so that we gain IN wisdom ,is wisdom.
SIMPLE THINGS CAN BE MOST EFFICACIOUS. Its so simple to be happy. But so difficult to be simple.
Blessings to all
I pray that the beauty within prevails.
it will
