Why (someone like) Bono Should Run...

In its Sunday magazine, the NY Times features the lead singer of U2 and his efforts to increase aid for Africa.

Bono should run for President.

Okay, I'll admit the sunglasses, hairstyle, and choice of profession might hurt his chances, but in every other way, Bono would be an ideal choice for the democratic party.

At first glance, this appears to be another story about a famous person with a guilty conscience. We applaud and think, well, I guess vacationing in the Hamptons every year does get boring. Yes, yes, we agree...we are the world. Or at least you are.

However, Bono's efforts have been distinct. He is highly educated about the issues surrounding aid to Africa, has leveraged his fame extremely well (becoming close to Condoleezza Rice (who loves rock music, apparently), Tony Blair, and others), and through consistent dedication has made what seems to be a discernable difference in the aid that will be reaching Africa during the next few years.

More than that, unless the NY Times is getting a bunch of ad money from U2 in the near future, Bono exemplifies qualities the Democratic party should be looking for:

1. He's got some marketing sense. John Kerry, please take notes:

One Sunday morning that fall, Bono called to ask Sperling if he could come to his office in the West Wing. There he put his hand on top of a giant stack of papers Sperling was working through and said: "I bet that most of the things in this pile feel more urgent than debt relief. But I want you to think of one thing: Ten years from now, is there anything you'll feel more proud of than getting debt relief for the poorest countries?" Bono understood something about people like Sperling: that in their heart of hearts, the chastened New Democrats of the Clinton administration yearned for morally resounding acts, but that they needed political cover, and they needed permission - the feeling that the thing could and must be done. When Bono left, Sperling called a treasury official and said that he wanted to insert something on debt relief into a speech Clinton was about to give at the World Bank. He and Summers got a few minutes in the presidential limo. Clinton instantly agreed to call for 100 percent cancellation of the debts owed to the United States by 33 impoverished countries.

2. He is a devoted Christian. If you're a democrat, this is what you need:

In mid-2000, Bono received an audience with Senator Jesse Helms, viewed by Bono's fellow lefties, including members of the band, as the archfiend himself. Bono quickly realized that his usual spiel about debt service and so on wasn't making a dent. So, he recalls: "I started talking about Scripture. I talked about AIDS as the leprosy of our age." Married women and children were dying of AIDS, he told the senator, and governments burdened by debt couldn't do a thing about it. Helms listened, and his eyes began to well up. Finally the flinty old Southerner rose to his feet, grabbed for his cane and said, "I want to give you a blessing." He embraced the singer, saying, "I want to do anything I can to help you." Kasich, who was watching from a couch, says, "I thought somebody had spiked my coffee."

3. He reaches out to Democrats and Republicans alike with sincere positivity:

This was Randall Tobias, head of the Bush administration's AIDS program. The administration had just announced that the program was providing antiretroviral drugs to 155,000 Africans with AIDS. Another kind of activist might have said, "That leaves 25 million more to go." But not Bono: he looked his cornfed interlocutor in the eye and said, "You should know what an incredible difference your work is going to make in their lives." Tobias looked embarrassed. Bono said various wonderful things about President Bush. Tobias beamed.

4. And the clincher: though he has had more opportunity than any man who will read this posting, he seems content with one girl:

Though he has, over the years, written a great many aching ballads about women with "Spanish eyes" and so forth, he has stayed married to his first wife, Ali, whom he met at age 12 and started dating at 16.

A person like Bono shouldn't run for president!!!! Why? Bono is much more effective being from outside the government. He is not restricted by those who voted for him, nor is he indebted to those who helped put him in an office.
There are many good causes that need someone to champion them. The best way for them to gain progress is from outside a government. No US President could have done what Bono has accompished. By not representing any government, Bono's credibility is greatly increased.

I vote Jon Stewart for President. Bono would make a good running-mate.

Why do you want to deprieve Africans of whatever little help they are getting. If he runs for President his time will be wasted in petty politics about evoulution, stem cell research, etc.

Isn't there the little matter of Bono being an Irish citizen?

I think Bono is a much more effective spokesperson outside the political system. Plus his going into politics would mean the end of U2, something I doubt he will even consider.

I echo Al Franken in calling for Oprah Winfrey to run. Truly, it seems that no Senator can ever win, as they have had to do so much bartering during their time in Congress that they are left open to charges of flip-flopping. Thus, we end up with Governors as President (Reagan, Clinton, Bush 2). So perhaps someone with no political history, but a huge heart, could win and really make a difference. Oprah for President!!

Being perhaps the only politician commenting on this issue, I agree that Bono should stay away from electoral politics. Its a drain that sucks out your ideals day by day! Influencing decisions as an artist and public personality is a far more effective way of driving change...

I think we need a lot more people like Bono, inside the government and outside. I believe people like him do exist, but who's willing to put forth their courage? Who's going to up heave their pride? Their diginity? Who's going to stop caring what others think? Is it fair to allow one man to do all the work of a billion or so people? No!

I wonder when it's going to happen... When will people stop living in their own worlds and began living in one world? Creating a dream, a vision, for one world and it's future; instead of wondering when their break is going to come?

if we could get a president who had some of bono's qualities, that would be a start. it's a long list, but the top ones would be genuine compassion and intellect in equal measure, along with pragmatism and toughness.

oh yeah, and if the prez could burst your heart with a song, that would be cool too....

President? It's like asking somebody to move into an outhouse, that is, the cellar of an outhouse. Politics is just so dark, so much a machine of power, influence, ego, corruption, by definition, it stinks. So why would somebody who is pretty much free of the stink of politics want to go there? John Hagelin ran for president, he's a physicist and a devoted member of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's university in Iowa, a consciousness based educational facility, which Deepak Chopra was intimately involved in for years. I just consider politics a waste, a wasteland, hopeless. But Bono doesn't. He seems to be pure of heart, and holds his invincibility well in the face and presence of the darkness of the politicians, the power mongers, the ones who have utterly sold out to free profit corportate influences, Republicans and Democrats alike, the shameless Washington "shakers and movers." People change the world, people, one at a time, waking up, becoming clear, spritually clear, embracing integrity in their own little lives and going from there, that's how it's going to change, how it's going to happen. God bless Bono, and Jeffery Sachs, my hero, and the like. And God bless me, for participating in www.one.org to give what I can to world healing.

One flaw in BONO for PRES. You must be born in America to be President. Maybe Congressman Bono. Then again, any enlightened one would never be in politics or a power position.

Always have in mind:
Becoming a politicians has ever corrupted people!!!

I want Bono as what he recently is and not what he might get morphed into it!
(Understandable? sometimes have difficulties with the english language, sorry)
