Justice Grows to the Left

Deepak Chopra - October 07, 2005

When Pres. Bush tried to assure his right-wing base that Harriet Miers would not change her judicial philosophy for the next twenty years, he made a horrifying promise.

Luckily, it's one she herself won't keep. The right wing is frightened that an appointee might reach the Supreme Court and "grow to the left," as I heard someone say. That is, starting out with an open mind and no judicial experience, Miers might learn from being on the Court, and this learning would move her in the direction of social justice, tolerance, and loosened ideology.

The saving grace in America has been that such growth has occurred, particularly with Justices Sueter and O'Connor, both of whom were staunch Republicans who grievously let down the right after they were confirmed. The counter example is Justices Thomas and Scalia, who have kept loyal to right-wing ideology inflexibly, no matter what the issue is at hand. Fortunately, they haven't been the prevailing force in many majority decisions. As an informed citizen, I checked their records. Routinely, despite their avowed philosophy of not legislating from the bench, Thomas and Scalia have tried to vote down federal and state laws more often than any two justices in modern history, according to informed legal commentators. Far from letting legislatures do their business without judicial intrusion, the right wing wants the opposite: to revolutionize social policy by judicial fiat.

In Ms. Miers we seem to have someone who is a blank slate, but whose private inclinations are tolerant, cautious, compassionate to the underprivileged, and politically flexible. On the surface her nomination is unfair, in that she seems to have a private agreement on ideology with the President and no public trail; therefore, she is immune to being examined. Matters are made worse by Pres. Bush's wink-and-a-nod comments implying that she has her marching orders and will be a loyal foot soldier. That demeans both Ms. Miers and the Court itself.

If indeed her flaw is rigid loyalty to the right wing, we are no worse off than if the President had nominated another Scalia. But if Miers grows to the left, which is to say, if she begins to empathize with America's vast, diverse population instead of the rich white males who have determined her fate so far, the country will be well served by her.
Love,
Deepak

Only President Bush knows what his intent is in putting forth this partiular nomination. Or does he?
(personally I think he, like his father, is secretly a moderate)

The biggest problem facing the American society is the lack of clear intention (That's why I come here).
Politically, the two party system is the biggest obstacle to settling the muddle and revealing the true intentions of the three branches of the Government. Intangled. Mired. A mess.
Most of those in power do not know there own true intentions.

It's like the guy at work who becomes more interested in his competition with you that he soons finds himself (unaware) rooting against you, taking glee in your failings even though they effect his own bottom line eventually. He lost sight of his own intent.

Prehaps there is another coworker who eggs him on when he is waning, preahps even getting closer to realizing his own true intent and the horrible actions he has taken.

In the big picture this co-worker would be The Press.
Do you think the vile will stop when Hillery becomes president? It will only shift, and like Alcoholism it will be shown to be a progressive disease.

(by the way thank you Deepak for that recent post on intention and desire. Personally, very timely for me)

Deepak, Yes, that's why the far right wing of the republican party is screaming there heads off. They expected an ideologues like Scalia and Thomas. Hopefully ,if she is appointed she will move to the left, time will tell. I do find it interesting that the the same people who take a literal reading of the bible, do the same with the U.S. Constitution.

Deepak, I do agree that someone who starts off with a blank state can move left. But there is no way we can know this. If she is in Scalia mould and if she is let off easily in the confirmation hearings, it will be devastating then. It will mess up this country for atleast half a century. A prior record will help to know what is in store. Maybe I am pessimistic about this but I would prefer to take the safer approach in this case.

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

In addition to nominating 2 supreme court justices. Bush also has another historical task and perhaps even more important decision ahead of him. It has been reported that he is going to pick a replacement for the federal reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan. This position will definately have a greater impact on the US's economy and arguably have a major influence on social justice issues in the future as well.

HI deepak,

I really appreciate your analysis about Miers and bush good choice.Atleast you are diffrent then some extreme left.
JIgnesh

Deepak,
Great take on the whole issue! Ms. Mier's seems to possess some great possibility. I'm hopeful too she will not stay wedded to Bush's mindset. As you put it, she is a "blank slate"--the promise and possibility of reaching for justice. Good luck to her!

Sorry--she is a "blank slate" with "compassionate" leanings--it is good though--there is no rigid agenda, no past to uphold, defend and project into the future--I see here possibility and the freedom to grow towards justice.

My suspicion that Bush is a religious pervert gained grounds with today's article on Yahoo news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051007/pl_nm/religion_mideast_bush_dc_2;_ylt=Aq7Sp3Tucne68VWJXqaYjKUGw_IE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2ZGZwam4yBHNlYwNmYw--

Harriet Miers is a Bush buddy in many ways and most importantly as an Evangelical Christian. She may have compassion towards the underprivileged but she is strictly loyal to her church and Bush. So, if appointed to the high court, I very much doubt she would shift to the left. I completely agree with the analysis of the following article on huffington.com
http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20051006/cm_huffpost/008407;_ylt=AoqjkS.4WHErXYu1b1yOs7cd6sgF;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

Well hell Deepak, once again you're 180 degrees out of phase!! I do find it interesting that your reason for not liking Thomas and Scalia, is exactly what we on the right say about the other yahoos on the bench! Is this an example of those 'memes' you wrote about?? I find most of this discussion humorous, until I read posts by people like Andy F. who don't want the constitution taken literally. Then I get scared. The founders of this country were not perfect, but their great experiment has worked better than anything that has ever been tried throughout the annals of history. Yes, those 'rich white males' that you guys seem to despise, put together a system that has allowed those with brown, black, yellow or red skin to come here and to excel and prosper. Yes, the American Indians were done wrong. The slave trade was immoral and wrong. But, we can choose to move forward in the land of opportunity, or we can take the path of the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons, whose mission in life is to continually convince the black man that he is getting a raw deal, thus lining their own pockets and getting a seat at the right hand of power in the Demo party.

I find your whining and carping about republicans, Bush, and those heinous christians, amusing.....scary if those with your viewpoint ever gain power, but amusing nevertheless.

A judges job is not to empathize with this great diverse population, nor is it to lift up the downtrodden. The judges job is to interpret the constitution and the law. The problem with the souters, ginsbergs, and the like is that they truly do legislate from the bench. They scare the hell out us in the heartland who believe in property rights, a days work for a days pay, the right to own guns, and who don't want a leftist lifestyle shoved down our throats. You guys get upset by the possibility of another Scalia, because you can't win at the ballot box. Your only chance to get your liberal agenda approved is with a liberal majority on the SC. Well, here's hoping Miers is Scalia's little sister, and if she is all is well!! If not...well, y'all may get the last laugh....we'll see!! Frankly, I wish she'd withdraw, bush would nominate another known 'scalia' and ram him down Leahy's and Reid's throat, and watch the democrats run right over the cliff politically. Its a fight he can win if he'll do it...I can only hope!!!

Oh well, I've done my 'whoopin and hollerin' for the day, better go. I promised my kids I'd help'em build a new cage for their bunnies!!

I don't really know why I keep coming back here, guess it's because I truly love Deepak Chopra, and find him to be a profound thinker...except when it comes to politics...then he's nuttier than a fruitcake!! (Little redneck saying there)

Krish, one shithead to another, I love you too!!! :)

norm

I need some help. What is the best way to analyze someone who says "Bush is the most intelligent man I have met" ? Even the extreme right don't say such things. They wax eloquent about his faith, morals, or conviction but know where to draw the line because they too have their standards. Heck, even his daughters will flip out on that comment, his dad will be offended, his mother will rescind the cake dole out, and his niece will voluntarily check herself into rehabilitation.

Yet I will share this: she can't match up to Clarence Thomas. Meeting the man was an epiphany. Ever since, I've stopped to appreciate the door knobs when I enter a room.

Norm, you must be in a good tax bracket to run that whole morally righteous conservative garbage here. It's a class thing, the rich religious facists taking over the country, getting richer and richer and removing all obstacles to their free profit schemes, lying, swindling, vs. real people who are not handed all the right wing's privileges and power, so maybe you wouldn't understand. This is not the United States of Oil Barons, or is it? We're sick of getting screwed, Social Security, Greenspan's Rand based economic philosophy, the supposed sanctity of unfettered greed, the corportate takeover of the government, the end of democracy, don't you see that????????? Oh, no, you're so comfortable in your conservative role. Lot to keep hold of, I guess. Enjoy it while it lasts.

"one of the regular folks"

Hmm..My point Norm was really this. The constitiuon is a living document. If you don't think so then you must think African Americans are 3/5 of a person and thats just the most obvious example. It has changed with the times, and it should. The U.S is not static, it changes and grows all the time, everything does. Yet somehow the right wing seems to think it's 1789. Well it's not. It's time to wake up from your slumber.

John,

If only you knew!! I'm in my late 30's, self employed, didn't go to college. (guess you can tell by my writing, huh?) Not in a high tax bracket but love freedom. Fiscally a conservative. Very much a conservative on defense. Don't really give a damn about gay marriage one way or another...one of my best buddies is an ultraliberal lesbian. Abortion, well...kinda makes me sick....would like to see Roe overturned and then the state legislatures make individual state law about it, if it passes, so be it, but that's where it should have been settled anyway, not by judicial fiat. I'm not a christian, sort of trying to figure out where I belong, that's why i read deepaks books and love'em.

I believe conservatism represents, not a lying and scheming trying to get away with murder kind of ideology, but rather a levelling of the playing field. Let me ask you a question John. If you and I had graduated from the same high school, same year, same economic background. You went to college, I didn't. You busted your ass and go on to make 600 g's per year. I stay in the hometown, marry a local girl, get a job at the factory and make 40 g's per year. Should you pay a higher % of taxes than I pay?? Conservatives say, NO. Lib's say yes. I have no problem with safety nets, and government programs to help the downtrodden. I have a huge problem with government plans that keep the poor poor, because it's their politcal base...that's what the 'New Deal' politics has given us. That sense of individualism is gone. I went to a convention last weekend for the company whose products I sell. There were several Filipinoes there, they came here from destitution, to find prosperity...they're willing to work for it...they're not standing in line with their hands out.

John, I don't know what you've been told, or what you think you've seen, but conservatives aren't mean or cold hearted. They've watched socialism fail, and bring misery to many a country. Today's US liberalism is just watered down socialism, and it scares us to death. We value freedom, and rugged individualism, and yes, we suffer from the measles of humanity, we do think this country is the greatest place in the world to live...not perfect, but a shining light.

Most of us John, are the kind of people you'd want to be your neighbor. You could leave your house unlocked. (We have guns!! Nobody would mess with your house with us around) YOu could leave your tools lying in the front yard, they'd be there tomorrow. Your kids would be safe at our house. If your lawn mower broke down, we'd fill ours up with gas and bring it to you to use. We'd stand out by the fence in the evening and watch the cows and talk about when we were kids. We care about this country, John, and we believe it was founded the right way, and we wanna see it keep a lot of it's values. We do believe some things are right and some are wrong. True conservatives, don't care about skin color or background, we believe in a hand up, not a hand out. That my friend, is who we are. I know you hate bush, but for a few minutes, try to put that away, and go get a picture of him from 5 years ago, and compare it to how he looks today. If you're heartless, you don't age like that in 5 years. I don't know if he's done it all right, maybe not, we can have a policy debate. But I do believe he's a good man, and is doing what he feels best. I really do believe that. Yeah, I'm a conservative. No, I'm really not in that high a tax bracket John. But I wanna be, and if can keep the libs out of my pocket....I will be!!!

Have a great evening!!

ANDY F:

First I would like to ask if the constitution itself ever stated that "African Americans are 3/5 of a person" I really don't know. I could probably Google it and spend some time trying to find the answer. Maybe you already know.

TO THE REST:

Look there are a lot of things I don't like about America. Before we go on a witch hunt to burn Norm at the stake I would like to say that his points are very valid.

I am a Black man born in America. I may not eat lunch with Norm but as soon as we begin to personally attack him here for his views we actually confirm his views.

NORM:

You make great points. Some days when I read your posts I miss the simpler times growing up in Huntington Long Island. (The 60's, 70's and 80's). I may not fully agree with everything you stand for but I do appreciate it. You don't vacillate.

My only suggestion to you would be to drop the cynical personal attacks. What you have to say has great value here and it will be heard much better if you stick to the passion of your experiences with out the, once in a blue moon, stabs at personalities.

that, and, another freakin´ mystery of life..or `do` we call them (that) phenomenae women..?
I´m gonna sue my buddy wayne..love..;)just kiddin`..;)

You May be someone elses sweetheart
Fighting someone elses war
And if you suffer for the millions
Then its what your fighting for

Someone believes in only light of day
Someone strong enough to show the way
Someone everyone believes in
Someone who.., Will stand by you

And that will be your heart in mine
My love is on the line
I know its how i'm gona stay
For a Stranger in a strange land far away

And just to see your spirit shine
I feel your hand in mine
I write a letter every single day
to a stranger in a strange land far away

May we share the most tomorrows
I will hear you when you cry
Should we let it come between us
Never knowing how we live or die
I will walk you through the pouring rain
I will help you learn to live and love again
If i'm heald before you go to heaven
I send you home again

And that will be your heart in mine
My love is on the line
I know its how i'm gona stay
To a stranger in a strange land far away

And somewhere in the lonley night
your flame is burning bright
I know its how i'm gona stay
For a stranger in a strange land far away

And just to see your spirit shine
I feel your hand in mine
I write a letter every single day
to a stranger in a strange land far away
Ooooh Oooh ooh ooh
Far away

Cher, Char, care, or was it share..

Love hurts, love scars
Love wounds and mars
Any heart not tough
Or strong enough
Take a lot of pain
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
And it holds a lot of rain
Love hurts, (ooooo), love hurts

You're young, I know
Babe, but even so
I know a thing or two
Ooo honey, I've learned from you
I've really learned a lot
I've really learned a lot
Love is like a stove
It burns you when it's hot
Love hurts, (ooooo), love hurts

Some fools rave, of happiness
Of blissfulness, togetherness
Oh, some fools,
They fool themselves, I guess
They're not fooling me
And I know it isn't true
God, I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie and it's
Made to make you blue
Love hurts, (ooooo) love hurts
(Ooooo), love hurts

And I know it isn't true
Oh, I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie and it's
Made to make you blue
Cause love hurts
Early in the morning you hurt,
Love hurts, (ooooo), love hurts
(Ooooo), love hurts

Just a little fun intermezzo in a serious topic..
(I don`t do serious..;) only important..;)

Love.., passion! (and a smile..;)

NORM"

Thank you. You must have been feeling my post.

One other thing. I can't say I love America. I'm not put together to love a country. I do miss it;s sense of freedom. No other country I have ever been in has had that same "taste". With that said I now live in Switzerland. This is the greatest country on the planet.

Also they say Sweden is a socialist country. I don't know if it really is or not because 1. I'm not sure what socialism really is and 2. I'm not a very good social scientist. If it's true that it is a socialist country then I wouldn't be to quick to say socialism has failed. I've been there and it ain't so bad.

Deepak and All,

It is fascinating to look at politics through the lens of a detached observer. I appreciate Deepak's opinion and I trust his research into this matter. I was skeptical about Ms. Mier's lack of experience on the bench, but was encouraged by her views on some social issues. It will be interesting to see Washington wrestle with this one!

Love, Bo

Laurence: Yes I do know. Article 1 section 2. Clause 3. http://www.house.gov/Constitution/Constitution.html

ANDY F:

Thanks.

I did not read where it says ""African Americans are 3/5 of a person".

Please explain.

Laurence, here is the text: Clause 3: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. Bound to service refers to slaves.

And then we have someone like this.....how is America best being served with these sort of words....to me there is no excuse....

Media Matters exposes Bennett: "You could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down"

Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down."

Bennett's remark was apparently inspired by the claim that legalized abortion has reduced crime rates, which was posited in the book Freakonomics (William Morrow, May 2005) by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. But Levitt and Dubner argued that aborted fetuses would have been more likely to grow up poor and in single-parent or teenage-parent households and therefore more likely to commit crimes; they did not put forth Bennett's race-based argument.

From the September 28 broadcast of Salem Radio Network's Bill Bennett's Morning in America:

CALLER: I noticed the national media, you know, they talk a lot about the loss of revenue, or the inability of the government to fund Social Security, and I was curious, and I've read articles in recent months here, that the abortions that have happened since Roe v. Wade, the lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30-something years, could fund Social Security as we know it today. And the media just doesn't -- never touches this at all.

BENNETT: Assuming they're all productive citizens?

CALLER: Assuming that they are. Even if only a portion of them were, it would be an enormous amount of revenue.

BENNETT: Maybe, maybe, but we don't know what the costs would be, too. I think as -- abortion disproportionately occur among single women? No.

CALLER: I don't know the exact statistics, but quite a bit are, yeah.

BENNETT: All right, well, I mean, I just don't know. I would not argue for the pro-life position based on this, because you don't know. I mean, it cuts both -- you know, one of the arguments in this book Freakonomics that they make is that the declining crime rate, you know, they deal with this hypothesis, that one of the reasons crime is down is that abortion is up. Well --

CALLER: Well, I don't think that statistic is accurate.

BENNETT: Well, I don't think it is either, I don't think it is either, because first of all, there is just too much that you don't know. But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky.

Bill Bennett's Morning in America airs on approximately 115 radio stations with an estimated weekly audience of 1.25 million listeners.

ANDY F:

I'm not stupid. I followed your link. I read the text. I know that "bound to service" means slaves and more. It also refers to prisoners. I still want to know where it refers to,

""African Americans are 3/5 of a person"".

Don't pull a cheap move here. There were also free black people (what you call African Americans).

Where does it say "African Americans" are 3/5 human?

It doesn't.

You who says the constitution is a "living" document. I am appalled.

When I got to Taos New Mexico in the early 80's I found a group of blacks that wanted to reach out and help the aboriginal Americans (Pueblo Indians). The blacks claimed an affinity with the aboriginal Americans. Do you know what the Pueblo Indians response was?

No thank you. We don't need any more help from you Anglos. Yup. To the view point of the aboriginal Americans living in northern New Mexico at that moment there was no difference between white and black. We were all Anglicized. They were color blind. I suggest my friend that you begin to adopt a similar stance. Get color blind.

And please don't use my race to prove a point. Unless you can show me where in the constitution it says ""African Americans are 3/5 of a person"".

Laurence, It was not a cheap move, if that was your impression of it well I am sorry for that. My point was, this is how the document was written in 1789. Many things have changed in this country ,including the idea that for tax purposes, slaves should be counted as 3/5 of a person. Indeed slavery itself is gone and the constitution has been updated accordingly. And that is my point the document does not exist in a void it needs to be amended from time to time to keep up with people's awareness of morality and changing values. If however you think I was using the term, African American to describe free black people, I was not. And as far as the color blind statement, I honestly don't know what your saying there. My main point was never color it was the Constitution. Would you prefer if I said that the Constitution has been changed to allow women to vote? That was not in the original document either.

ANDY F:

The color blind statement is a term some of us use to suggest that we stop speaking in terms of black and white. Us versus them. There is a whole generation of us that no longer think in terms of color. Hence color blind. It is appalling to me that in this day and age people still play the race card to make a point.

It doesn't much matter if you use blacks or women. You still pit "us against them" whenever you speak in dualities. My reaction, although unstated, is really more to the fact that once again an attack is mounted. All Norm said was, " The judges job is to interpret the constitution and the law. "

He used your name, which was provocative, and you come back with this whole tirade about how he's living in 1789 and must think all "African Americans" are 3/5th's a person. That is my real concern here.

And now I find myself on a tirade. This is the route of wars. Right here.

And please stop calling us "African Americans". We are Black. We fought against police clubs and water canons in the 60's for the right to be called Black instead of Negro.

any body heard of the earthquake in pakistan?

any prayers?

MRudula: Yeah, it's been on where I am at, Interneting away all night long in Colorado, and the reports of the devastation are growing rapidly.

I found it amazing to consider that Pakistan, Afghanistan, with particular reference to Kashmir, well....my mind just saw the quake as a direct mirror reflection of our human wars in those areas--it literally made my "suspicious mind" wonder if some of these quakes could possibly be related to "undisclosed" nuclear testing and saber-rattling that somehow remains hidden to the "mainstream?"

I hate thinking that way too--but it is stunning to realize how "desensitized" I am already becoming to the increasing frequency and intensity of the escalating natural disasters, and how they "seem" to echo some of our warring and social injustices.

It is like the earth is screaming out the pain of both nature, and all the anguish the human race itself is screaming out in it's daily pain of suffering and needless death, so often intensely violent in it's expression.

Thanks for bringing it up--so I didn't have to be the first to comment on yet another nightmare of despair tearing into the human fabric, let alone nature's as well. Dave

I disagree totally with your observations concerning the right. It would be beleaguring the obvious to point out that your left wing friends on the Supreme Court are the ones that just trashed the rights of the poor and middle class by legislating eminent domain from the bench. Although you may have been in this country for many years, it is obvious that you are oblivious to the fact that this is a basically conservative country.

Laurence: Well said. Here is my e-mail if you wish to discuss more: aferr1@yahoo.com. Best wishes.

Hi Deepak,

I just read your post and that of a few of the bloggers. The comments of one Norm got my blood rushing faster than usual, and I felt compelled to instantaneously respond.

Norm claims that he is not racist, yet he dirisively bemoans the fact that dark-skinned immigrants come here to improve their lot in life and to have the opportunity the be rich and famous, etc. Notice he did not make reference to European immigrants.

Norm, you claim that you are not racist. Yet I have a hard time believing that you will eagerly bring over a re-fuelled lawn mower to your neighbor and embrace him if he were black or brown-skinned. Or seeing you inviting him over for a BBQ or beer. Who are you tryinng to fool, little redneck?

About Bush: "But I do believe that he is a good man...." Well Norm, it all depends on what you mean by the word good or to whom you are speaking. To the 200,000 plus Iraqis whose loved ones are now lying in their graves, they , understandably, will have a hard time comprehending the meaning of the word good.

You also claim that you care about this country and believe that it was "founded the right way." Well Norn, perhaps your limited schooling is showing through here. Tell this nonsense to informed African-Americans whose antecendents were brought over here under horribly inhumane conditions and abject misery in those primitive ships to toil and build this country and make the plantation owners rich.

CNN is currently running a story on the levees in New Orleans. Apparently, they are not rebuilding them higher and stronger because there is no money. Did you here that Norm? No money to build them...?

What a good man Bush is! Hundreds of billions of dollars are squandered in futility in Iraq, destroying the lives, livelihoods and homes of those people, but there is no money for the levees. Yes, your good man is really doing a lot of good in the world. Hey Norm, America is now safer because of the brilliant maneuvers of your man? There will be no more terrorists in the world. They will now forever cower when they think about your good man Bush...Especially those whose loved one are dead.

As long as ignoramuses like you continue to foster such misguided opinions in America, there is a long, long way to go before we can truly declare America as "the land of the free and the land of freedom and equality for all."

ANDY F:

Thank you for your email address. I look forward to a dialogue with you. (2 week fall vacation here in Switzerland for my 7 year old daughter and I have the privilege of spending the entire 24/7 x 2 with her so I may be slow on the uptake but much appreciation).

RON SAYWACK:

I appreciate your instantaneous response. I understand the hostility. I myself have vented on this blog many times before. I think maybe even directly towards Norm. "I think".

It's amazing to me the difference I notice concerning the hostilities I observe on this site. When Deepak posts a "spiritual" issue the hostilities are covert. When Deepak posts a "political" issue the cat claws come out and truer natures are exposed.

This blog is the most unique opportunity for all of us to shed the anger we all harbor. Yes all of us.

I am not a defender of Norm. I even think he might not feel comfortable with me speaking his name. I don't know for sure and I don't care on the most basic of levels.

Some might call me a liberal. Hell I don't even know what that means. I am me. Point.

Hilary, Bush, Kerry, George Washington? Hell put anyone of 'em in office or burn 'em all. (Actually I'd rather have them all in office at the same time. I don't like the smell of burning flesh unless it's on the Ghat's in Varanassi.)

RON:

You say:

"Norm claims that he is not racist, yet he dirisively bemoans the fact that dark-skinned immigrants come here to improve their lot in life and to have the opportunity the be rich and famous, etc. Notice he did not make reference to European immigrants."

I read the same thing you did. Norm is not bemoaning the fact that anyone is achieving a better state of existence in America. Really. You need to read what he said with more neutrality. It appears to me that Norm is celebrating this fact as he is celebrating his illusion of America. (And I don't use the word illusion negatively. If I wanted to be negative I would have said dellusion). We must try to see and use our words with great intent on this site. I'm sure we all do and the results are costly=karmic.

We all have to. I said it to Norm I said it to Andy I say it to myself I say it to you. All of you. Such diverse minds. So much useful information. The opportunity of a life time. True free press. True sharing. This is what we have desired all of our lives. We rail against the press because we say they are negative. We get this golden moment in existence and we behave worst then the press.

Be diligent. Doubt. Ask hard questions, But stop the attack. We are a reflection of our world. We do create the moments. Earthquakes. Hurricanes. Melting Ice Caps. It must stop. Possibly it can begin to stop here.

RON:

"Or seeing you inviting him over for a BBQ or beer. Who are you tryinng to fool, little redneck?"

Please. Where is the "spirit"?

Dear Ron,

It seems like we had just recovered from the last bout of hostility on here and I feel we did well and do not need to stoop that low again....

I think we are all entitled to our views even if you disagree, one can agree to disagree without the hostility.....

I don't like Bush either but there is a line not to be crossed here so that we can keep the balance...that is just my opinion on the tone at this time.

Hi Joanie: Haven't talked to you or Lalai recently so I thought I'd engage you here--if it is OK?

I certainly agree with the direction you wish move the conversation to--but I am left wondering if the true beauty of the Intentblog may be it's resiliancy in recovering from seemingly bitter skirmishes that erupt from our oftentimes polarized views?

It seems that if we try and "corral" the "Wilder" horses from strenously disagreeing with the more tribal-minded herd horses, we defeat our purposes of tolerating and allowing a forum that doesn't set up boundaries.

Because of the nature of the communciations here, no one will physically be injured, although I agree with that a certain minimum level of respect for differing opinions leads to the optimal and maximum benefit for the Intentblog community.

Some don't like my rambling posts, some don't like the particular leaning of what I say, and so it is that I feel allowed to "quip" someone else for a particular bent as well.

Both of us have learned that we can just "scroll on" and sidestep the sometimes contentious and caustic disagreements that spark personal insults--but moving by them, without getting too attached to the polarized issues, is what allows us to acknowledge both, or all sides of an issue as valid, without getting stuck in an "eddie" of a current simply swirling in it's own angry emotional waters.

In doing so, we allow for all these voices like our own, looking for a place to be heard and acknowledged (whether we are "right or wrong," or in politics--"right or left!"), searching for some semblance of sanity and caring in an increasingly alienated, isolated, and oftentimes, terribly lonely world; most especially at times--"achingly alone" in endless crowds of herds of people running "roughshod" over each other in a frenzy of consumerism--to get what is "ours," what we think will make us happy and fill in that achingly empty inward-void, desparately searching for something that can fill it--but never finding what that "it," IS!!! N'est Pas???

Joanie--I've noticed the tenor of some of the disagreements are actually like listening to siblings argue--with the flavor of, "Why do we hurt the ones we love, the most?"

In other words--after the arguments, insults and personal degradations, we see some of these same voices become friends--and that we are often just lashing out in anger and pain--screaming for someone to tell us what is going on: what, and how to feel; what, and how to think; whether we are actually making a difference, and whether we can actually change any of it.

I know why you come here--you tell me! Just like you know what I'm saying!

That is "why" I come here--because the "likes of you" are here!"--Love, Dave

Dear Laurence Peter Brown and Joanie:

First of all let me affirm that I am neither a black man or Asian. I was born in these parts as, presumably, yourself. I am strongly opposed to any form of racism, whether covert or overt, whether implicit or explicit.

Norm: " Yes, those 'rich white males' that you guys seem to despise, put together a system that has allowed those with brown, black, yellow or red skin to come here and to excel and prosper." These were purely inappropriate and pejorative comments.

My dear friends, if this isn't a racist statement, then what is? It was these words of Norm's that sent my blood pressure in rush mode. I interpret this as racist to the core and will speak out against it every time. Didn't Norm forget to include white skin in his list? Was that an innocent oversight? I quoted Norm's comments paraphraseologically ; not verbatim. But the essence of his comments remains the same: racist.

And for this my dear friends, I make no apologies. If you intrepret a sense of hostility, it is not towards Norm, per se; only against the implied racism evinced by him.

Best regards,

Ron Saywack.

P.S. The next time I throw a backyard BBQ and cocktail party, Norm, Laurence and Joanie are invited.

Hey Ron,

Calm down friend!! I'm sorry I upset you so much. No, I'm really not racist, I really don't care if you're black, brown, blue, or pink. Yeah, I really would bring you my lawnmower if you were my neighbor. If you come over for beer, it would be byob, because I don't like the stuff. I would give you Crown Royal and coke, though, because I do like that!

I guess we just have two different views of the country. Ron, I abhor what happened to black people in this country. I believe American Indians were done a colossal wrong. But Ron, we can keep looking back at what was done, and keep seething with rage, or we can look forward with hope. I believe in hope! I also believe in the vision of the USA. I'm not quite sure how you came up with me being a racist, but if I came across that way, I'm sincerely sorry, because I'm not. I don't know if you read what I wrote about my new Filipino friends, but I was filled with pride and joy just watching them open up and partake of the opportunities that are afforded them here.

As for your ignoramus comment....well, I guess I'm guilty. I do my best to self educate, sometimes I fail....

Little Redneck?? Thanks buddy!! I'm 6'1" and weigh about 300...I'm a big dude, and need to lose weight...it's been a long time since someone called me little!!!

Laurence Peter Brown, maybe some of my comments have been a little caustic...I'll work on it!! Maybe I can learn to model myself a little more in the mold of David, Joanie, Scott Masterson and some of the others who regularly post here!! Guess we all have work to do, huh?

Y'all have a good day....it's a great day to be alive....

norm

Norm,

No hard feelings, Pal. I am glad to hear that you are not racist, and I will hold you to these words in the future. But, next time be a little more careful in how you phrase those comments.

Regards,

Ron.

Hey Ron,

Guess we were both on here at the same time. I see what got you so excited and irritated. Again we see through two different sets of eyes. I guess the reason I didn't specifically say 'whites' is because those are the ones everyone is railing against...I apologize. I can see where you would come from, especially if you were already incensed about what I was writing anyway. Kinda funny I guess. The bad thing about typing on a blog or email, is that it's hard to use inflections to get your point across. I actually found it a little bit funny, (and I guess a little bit hurtful) to be called a racist. In our business, one of my biggest fans is a black lady from Mississippi. For whatever reason, she adores me. My Asian Friends have invited my wife and me to be the featured guests at their spring business meeting. One of my best buds, is a lesbian left winger...she is white...but nonetheless, y'all seem to think everyone on the right hates these 'groups' of people, and it just ain't so my friend. I don't say any of the above to 'toot my own horn' I only say it to make the point, these people are my friends because i accept them with open arms and love them, and I am loved by them in return....it's a special feeling, because they are all special people.

Ron, I hope you have a good Sunday. Wherever you live, I hope the sun is shining. I'm glad I got on here yesterday...this has been a learning experience. I still feel the same as I did then, but will try to choose words more carefully as to be more clear.

As for the barbecue, I've been around here since this blog was started...I've often thought it would be cool to have a big get together with everyone that regularly posts. Probably logistically impossible, but nonetheless, cool!!
I have about 40 acres...we could do it here!!

Love to everyone...
norm

Norm - I don't think you need to apologize so profusely for your comments. I did not see anything racist in them. I think racism is when people deliberately treat one particular race badly, like the cops do for example. But if anyone holds a personal opinion that they prefer to hang out only with Asians or only with blacks or only with whites there is nothing wrong with that. In fact this is the case most of the time, without needing to express it in so many words.

The word redneck itself has derogatory connotations. It referred to the red necks of farmers who spent a lot of time out in the fields. Thus class consciousness (a close cousin of racism) seems to be hard wired into us. As long as one is not deliberately mean, I think it is better to be able to express oneself rather than to worry about being considered a racist. Institutionalized racism is what needs to be tackled, not a few stray comments that were meant to be harmless anyway.

aaah, and everybody is friends again..

how nice, just like grown ups..;)

norm, I have a freakin cool roofterras,

"Yes, those 'rich white males' that you guys seem to despise, put together a system that has allowed those with brown, black, yellow or red skin to come here and to excel and prosper."

Hear, hear, Norm! Truth is bitter, but it is ultimately the truth that people insist on denying because it makes them "feel bad".

I for one hope you stay true to the Truth.

'rich white males'

Good Sunday morning everyone. It is a picture perfect fall day here in Ontario,Canada. As Norm said a great day to be alive. I have enjoyed reading all of the comments posted here. I come to this site everyday, most days twice a day. I enjoy it with my morning cup of coffee before going to work and with a glass of wine at night before I go to bed. Mostly, I am a silent participant however I do throw in a comment when I need clarification on something or if religion is at the forefront of the discussion because then I cannot resist. I wish to express my thanks to all of you just for being here. I learn a great deal about myself from reading your posts because as Dr. Chopra says we are all mirrors for each other.
For Norm - I can tell from your writings that you love your country very much and I do believe that you are the kind and generous person that you say you are. I grew up on an island off the coast of mainland Canada (Newfoundland) where people are much like the ones you describe here. They would do anything for their neighbour. Their intentions are good however for the most part their awareness is restricted to that island and they don't have a lot of interest in expanding past that point. I do not believe that it is enough to love the USA or an island off mainland Canada. I believe that today we are being called upon to love our planet and its people not just a small part that we have steaked out as ours.

I have two issues with what you wrote in your first post:
1. "Their great experiment has worked better than anything that has ever been tried throughout the annals of history". From the outside looking in America "is not" working. Something is wrong, the majority of her people are angry and afraid. If I were to choose to leave Canada, it would not be to live in the United States. There are other countries on this planet that have just as much or more to offer.
2. "those 'rich white males' that you guys seem to despise, put together a system that has allowed those with brown, black, yellow or red skin to come here and to excel and prosper". I believe that this should read that people with "red skin" were cojoled into allowing white males to come here and excel and prosper. If I were a native american, I believe that I would take great offence to the way you worded that statement. It seems that the "red skin" is neither excelling or prospering under the white mans system for the most part. Maybe we should let them take over for awhile and run things as they did before we arrived.

Joanie - I do not believe that you can have a situation where people discuss issues like religion and politics and not expect some discension. It is bound to happen but as David says, no one can get hurt except maybe our pride. As I said before, we are all mirrors to each other and maybe here we will be shown something about ourselves that our family and friends see but are afraid to show us.

´put together a system that has allowed those with brown, black, yellow or red skin to come here and to excel and prosper."

how nice..how generous..

Of the Dutch, English, Portugees and Spanish..
or french..?

first you loot, plunder, rape and ´liquidate´ all ´assets´, and then ye say: but, here, look, in writing, it says: bill of rights,
as in: we have `em, and you the bills..

Love, emancipating with passion..

`to excel and to prosper`

hmmnn...

tell that to your latino or ghetto brother..
trying to get some decent higher education..

Love,

Ok Ok Ok. New day. Enough of the mushy sentiments. Let's get back to kickin' some butt. (Only kidding).

Yes Ron I have to agree with Divya. I am black and I saw see nothing racist in Norms comment.

And yes the redneck comment was much more inflammatory then Norms omission of "whites" in his list of races that have benefited from the democracy that was founded by those "rich white men". Actually adding white to Norms list may have been redundant.

MAREK:

Have you studied in the states? When I was at Univerity the amount of people of color out numbered the white faces I saw. There may have been more white people than people of color but you couldn't tell for sure by attending classes. And it made me proud.

CUNY, Hunter College.

´Truth is bitter, but it is ultimately the truth that people insist on denying because it makes them "feel bad". ´

hmmn..
is there something sweeter than truth?,
or do we call that ´beauty´?

`it is ultimately the truth that people insist on denyin`

But that´s only because it makes them `use` their
brains, or was it spirt? instead of..
and the reason that you have audiobooks nowadays, (do they get past the first chapter though?) and the Discory Channel or was it National Geographic?

because it makes them "feel bad".
Thank `God` for narcotics..or was it a `state` change? or neuro-association(s)?

Love, and an applepie ;)

What was the tuition fee again nowadays, Laurence?
for your `finer` institutions?

I must be misinformed then,
nevermind,
I´m gonna sue..

Love, Passion

Sure, Laurence, as a (ex)-babysitter on the Erasmus International Student House in Rotterdam, with 250 exchange students,

The fact must be, that every ´daddy´ can,
send their kids, with gold and platinum, creditcards to the best education,
all around the world!
from Sydney, Moskow to Sao Paolo!,
Jagielonska, Oxford to Harvard!
in a hartbeat!

Disney world in Europe is in Paris, Laurence,

Love,

I asked if you had ever studied in the U.S. because I figured you were speaking just to speak. Or misinformed.

The opportunity for education in the states is there for anyone that wants it. My brother went to Harvard and then Harvard Law. He is now looking at a run for the Senate of the United States and will probably win. There are so many ways to get an education in America if one "really" wants it.

Don't remember what the tuition was but the government payed for it anyway.

MAREK:

From my own experience, kids that go to Ivy League schools on their daddies or mommies gold cards don't necessarily become "masters of the universe". Unless of course their daddy's were already president. (and even then there are those that would argue against Bush Jr. being a true master of the universe.

It ain't about the money dude. It's about the intent.

´for anyone that wants it´

You should put that message on a big bumper sticker,
attach it to a plain,
and fly over East Europa, Azia, South America..
and..

They would elect you president, king, prime-minister, in a heartbeat!

Love,

Not every one can ´tap in into the akasic field´
of ´unbound information´ and `infinite abundance`, and all the other qualities of the unifield field? or was if get real and physical?
or was dinero´s? euro´s? dollars? or pounds..?
I prefer polish zloty´s..
though, and if that is the case, Laurence, I´m gonna sue...

Love,

Laurence,

If an immigrant came to this land built by 'rich white men' from a 'third-world' nation such as Poland, for example, to prosper and to excel, how is white redundant on Norm's list?

Respectfully,

Ron.

But I do sincerly wish your brother, Laurence, the very best, and succes, good Karma, little ego, and all the abundance in the world!,
but I wish that for all the..´spiritual beings having a human experience`?
Who doesn´t?
or is that my little Neverland? or imagination..

Must be a Polish thing..;)

Love, dharma,

Maybe nice for the contrast, in the Netherlands there is no hierarchie of academics, everybody citizen, today gets a grant of 4 years, depending the income of the parents, and an extra student loan of the goverment of 3, and there are no `concurs` or something like that to get in, except for medicine, no bar exame,
but the beer sucks and nobody drinks wodka in this freakin` nation..

(and they do not know how to sing..is that correlated?)

Love, and a Harvard Phd for everyone! ;)

Divya: Thanks for your kind words, and for trying to understand what I was saying.

Laurence, same for you, I've enjoyed reading your posts. Do I remember that you said weeks ago that you're of Jamaican descent? If that wasn't you , please forgive me. The reason I'm asking, is that Jamaica is one of my favorite places in the world...and the people there are some of the most delightful people I've ever had the privilege of being with. The first two or three days with them, will drive you crazy, because everything moves so slowly, but after being told a few times, "Hey Mon, slow down, you're in Jamaica now, No problem.." You soon begin to get it and say to yourself, Hey these folks have it together!!! If I ever get in the tax bracket that John Wilder thinks I'm in, I think I'll get a vacation home there!!!

Faye Campbell, thanks for your words...I do understand where you're coming from, I do think the Natives of this country got a raw deal, a completely raw deal. However, now, I think the same opportunity is available for them that was available for the Chopras when they came to the US, or to my German Irish 'white' ancestors. They truly do have a choice in the matter now. I'm trying to choose my words carefully here, because I don't want to be called racist again, because I'm not. But points to ponder. Asians come here, and outperform, and outearn, and outlearn just about everyone here who considers this their 'native' land. Didja ever wonder why? I believe it's because they think they can, then they believe they can...then they simply go out and do it. Why is that?? Now, we have poor white people in Appalachia. We have poor black people in the inner cities. We have poor native americans on reservations. The asians come here and prosper, yet the people who have been here for generations live in dire straits...hmmmm....is it because the asians are more intelligent?? Maybe, but I have a theory. None of this has anything to do with the capability of race...it has everything to do with conditioning. We have a political party in this country that was in power for 60 years. They screamed about inequities, they marched, they protested, but nothing happened, because they governed in such a way as to keep those dear people dependent on them...hence their base. Has discrimination been alive and well in this country?? Of course. Is it still? In some places , yes. But there are politicians, and leaders like Jesse Jackson, who get up every day and tell those classes of people why this country is rotten, and why they can't win. The truth is, they can't win....if they keep looking backwards. But if they'll look ahead, they can begin to get traction, and they can start the next generation on the path to success, the opportunity is here for all.

Lastly, and I truly haven't meant to monopolize this blog this weekend, but I want to make one more thing clear. I truly love the USA. With all it's faults, failings, inequities, and everything else I love this country. Having said that, Faye, I do realize this is a global community. I guess the way to make a comparison is with how I love my wife. She is the most beautiful, sweet, wonderful intelligent woman on the planet. ditto for my kids!! Now....I hope every person here looks at their spouse and kids the same way....but wait a minute, they can't all be the most beautiful can they?? See what I mean?? I know with my head and my eyes, that there are places to live that are just as wonderful as the USA, but I wanna live here because I love it. There's a woman somewhere, that maybe more beautiful than my wife, but I stay here because I love her. My love for country is not meant in any way to come across as arrogance, or a 'better than you' kind of love. Rather just the devotion of a simple man, to a beautiful land.

Well, I'll try to stay off of here for a while now, and let y'all take it away. My beautiful wife....well....she says that sometimes I'm a blabbermouth!!!

Have a great rest of the weekend!!

norm

ps. marek, I don't know about that rooftop terrace idea...if Ron got after me with a steak knife, I'd have nowhere to run!!!

RON:

Maybe not redundant. But since he was already speaking of white men it was obvious to me that white men were a part of the list. Actually "any one that wants it".

On a Lighter Note:

Norm:

Even though I was the fastest sprint runner in college (*in my neck of the woods) and knowing that I could probably outwalk you when you are running fast (at 300 lbs), I am as tame as a lamb and will never come after anyone with a pen, let alone a stakeknife. No need to worry, my friend.

Having said that, how about if you begin the process of arranging that barbeque and cocktail party at your 40-acre ranch? And I will byob and then some.

Marek, you can invite some of those terrace beauties along.

Respect, Ron.

NORM:

Yea I'm the Jamaican guy. And yes it can be down right nerving trying to move at the speed of an American in Jamaica.

I remember when the Korean immigrants came to New York City. They were given low interest loans and government grants and almost over night put the Italian and German deli's out of business. All of my American friends, even the upper middle class ones, just bitched and complained about how unfair it was that our country should be helping out these "aliens". "Why don't they do something for us: they would complain.

I remember the owners washing and preparing the veggies for the salad bars right out in front of their deli's crouch as if they were working in fields back in Korea, while my friends and I were living the life going to "The Palladium" or "Lime Light" or "Paradise Garage".

10 years later these same deli owners were crouched on the side walk peeling their veggies and wearing Rolex watches, their Mercedes parked right there in front of their deli's.

And my friends had left their upper middle class parents homes and were now a part of the lower middle class and "new" poor working class. But don't you know they were still looking backwards and bitching about how they had no opportunity.

Or the Japanese that attended my University. Do you know that you could never book lab time in the computer labs. Every seat taken by a Japanese student. Why? Because lab time was more important then going out on the weekends to party. More important then hanging out with the "cool" group. And wouldn't you know over half of the non Asian students in that first computer programming class dropped out before the semester was half way over. They just couldn't find the time or the patients to get a terminal. After all Friday night at the pub was coming up and mommy just sent me some book money so I need to get that new dress.....Well I hope you all get the picture.

The opportunity is there if one really wants it.

haha,
whoahaha,
Everybody invited on my roofterras!
I got sweeties..from every part of the globe!,
no need to bring..some..;)
haha,
Norm, I got him drunk so fast, and so high on `sweets` in the `candyshop`, you`ll be the last on his list..;)

To Laurence,
Love you dude, if I may quote the best, forget Harvard! ;)it´s a spirit thing..;)

´We are priviledged children...,

Love, Passion, and sweets for all..;)

But I really do, agree with you, Laurence, as everyone would, here,

attention? awareness? consiousness? or just memory..

Love and spontanious fullfillment of desire programm for ya all..;)

and now..sing with me..;)

I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you

Om Nama Shivaya! First, writing opinions about the state of affairs of America is necessary and good. However, people have been doing that for a long time, and the imperialist way of life still remains! There needs to be something more than writing occuring..in an organized manner. I want to say to all of the opinionated political ideologists, to include myself..get involved in the local grass root movements and stay out of the middle! The myth of staying in the middle is outdated. Second, why only contributions from Asia and India?

HELLO DIVYA,

So you see nothing racist in Norm's reference to various shades of skin colours coming to a land fashioned by those "rich white men" to excel and to prosper. Well, it all depends on how you look at the glass...is half full or half empty? There is, in my opinion, something very offensive about Norm's rheotoric, and Ron was absolutely right to call him out on it. Everyone has an opinion and should express it if they are so inclined, without having to worry about being pilloried by others, whether they agree with it or not. This is America where freedom of expression is guaranteed. Have a good day, all.
