Paheli, by Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan - November 07, 2005

Thank you for your review of my film, Paheli, on Intentblog. I did read the comments, and it was refreshing to read inputs from the viewers. The film, Paheli, was made by my own production house, Red Chillies... which sounds like a Mexican restaurant, I am told, but nevertheless, a name that we have made a couple of films under.

Many times, I hear positive and negative analyses of the films that I make under this production house. Both are welcomed and taken note of...all the time...but then again, I go ahead and make the films that I wish to, and also make the same mistakes that I have perhaps done in the past.

The reason for doing this is that I believe in two things when I make a film. First, that it is not going to make me money...and hopefully not make me lose any either. That ends the material aspect of film making in the production house.

Then comes the second reason... to tell a story to a lot of people which is extremely entertaining, and at the same time, make the viewer take back home a bit more than the semi- filled popcorn packet. I don't wish them to change their lives after watching the film... I don't want them to learn a new way of being after the viewing, and least of all, I don't wish to ever preach to them what I personally cannot or am unable to practise.

Paheli was made with the same intention. A story which lends itself to intrigue, and maybe a bit fairy tale like...as one of the comment suggests. A married woman who falls in love with a ghost. It is based on a folk tale of Rajasthan written some 35 to 40 years ago. A time when we, as a society, were even more unfair to women than we are today... at least, in India. To tell a love story where a woman chose her own "man" seemed to me not only commendable and modern, but even courageous.

I am by choice a commercial actor/star or star/actor. I like to believe the former...the critics try to remind me that I am the latter time and again. I am also quite blessed...because by no choice of mine or perhaps by having no power over the choice... been bestowed by God an audience which has appreciated my work for over fifteen years. I am extremely thankful, and extremely used to the idea of being successful. Simply put...i love it.

At times, this love makes me weak enough to make choices that I feel will keep this dream to never end. And sometimes, the same love gives me enough courage to take a chance with the viewers, vis a vis the films I make.

"Asoka'' and "Paheli" are two films that make me feel the strength of the love that the audience has had for me. I cannot make any tall claims about the virtue of Paheli as a film...that decision i am very clear rests with the audiences... I can only tell a story...not really force anyone to like it. But having said that, I would like to put forth why I, as a producer, decided to make this film.

1. I think being in the position I am, if I don't take chances with the products I make..no one else should or can. I am by nature someone who wants to do things differently...not for the sake of being different, but because I feel the different approach will make a difference to many other film makers to take chances and make films which can say something thought provoking.

2. I have a deep regard for things Indian and for our culture. Unfortunately, I am myself not so culturally aware, and whenever something comes my way which introduces me to a part of our country, I want more people like me to be introduced to it.

3. I have a huge amount of respect for women. I was brought up by a very beautiful woman, my mother, and surrounded in my life by really talented and hard working ladies. Some of them are my actress friends and others in my family, like my sister and wife. Many times, when I hear a story which brings forth any dimension or a problem that a woman faces in her life, I feel compelled to partake in that story. Paheli is about emancipation of women. The right a woman should have in her life...the right to make a choice without being branded as a wrong doer. In our country atrocities against our women are not unknown even in this time and age...and through Paheli, I wanted to bring forth the strength a woman has to muster, even in dealing with very simple issues...like an arranged marriage.

Paheli was a chance to get these 3 desires fulfilled. The fourth one, as a producer, has been to take our films international. I was pleasantly surprised that Paheli is the official entry to the Oscars from India. I believed in the film on all counts when I made it. I was fully aware that it is not in a popular format that most of my films are, but i believed that people would like a good story. All my actor friends came aboard and helped me make this film.

Now I feel I have the chance to make a statement about Indian films at an international level with Paheli. My attempt is to get the film noticed by all at the Academy so that one does not have to introduce the fact to everyone that india is the largest film making country in the world... We make about 3 films a day... More people watch our films than any other film in the world... Actors are revered in india..etc etc...

I think it is the time that our film making industry got recognised on it's merit. It is the time that Indian films and film makers and the audience do not have to be on the periphery of world cinema. I think and I believe we are as good as it gets. I want everyone to know that, and that would happen if we all believe that we are not just an exotic nation of snake charmers but a media literate and educated upcoming economy.

My role is not that of a producer of a film called Paheli... that is just an instrument..but to be an Ambassador of our story telling nation, and get the world to love our stories and the technique that they use to tell them. I hope, and being a great believer pray all the time, that I should be able to achieve that. An international award will be a step in that direction to begin with...and even if doesn't come...I will continue my attempt as long as I am blessed by the love of my audience.

Insha Allah all who read this will share my belief...the tag line for Paheli is

SOME THINGS HAVE TO BE BELIEVED TO BE SEEN....

I think it will be true for our campaign for the Oscars..

love and regards,

Shah Rukh kKhan

Dear Mr. Khan,

I hate to start out by being "usual and common" that has never been my style, my mother brands me as eccentric and ever defiant of regularity and normality. I am a fan and I do think your work is good but I also think you need to know about Jamaica.

India in Jamaica.

Although our island is small we have a great population of Indians here, who's ancestory follow back to India. Although I myself am not Indian I have grown to have a great respect and love for the culture first being introduced to it through my studied at Art school where I majored in Textiles. Now that I am seeing a very special person who is Indian he has educated me on more than just dyeing techniques and fabric thread count he has tought me about the religion, he himself is Hindu, a religion with I fine very fascinatin, and more so Bollywood, and the world of Indian movies. The first movie I watched was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (not sure if the spelling is right lol) then I moved to Lagan and several others but most reciently Baghban which tought me to sing in Hindi and Khal Hona ho which made me cry although i dont fully understand Hindi.

I am not here to sing praises to Mr.Khan and burst into "I love you so much" I am here to commend him as one artist to another whose work touch someone despite the huge language barrierand to let him know that there is a huge Indian community here who loves his movies as well as Ms. Rai and Preti Zinta and Saif Ali Khan.

I think the coulture in India is beautiful and the people are extrodinary. I hope one day I will be able to visit a Beautiful country and meet your beautiful culture enriched people.

I might be from a tiny island on the other side of the world but you work still speaks to the Indian people here in Jamaica and continue to educate non Indian's like myself about your culture and beliefs.I hope one day you will visit us and see just what I am talking about. And know that you have a group of friends here.

Dear Mr. Khan

I wrote you a message about 10 minutes ago the message was titles India in Jamaica, and now I am reading some of what people write. There is one that I think was rude and should not have been even considered. The person wrote about how much they love you and hate your wife. I think that is rude and disrespectful to both you and your wife.

I hope you dont let what some people say deter you from the choices you make. Your wife loves you and has your children. I wish you both the best and happiness.

This person said that they love you but in the end the message shows that they dont know what the word love means. When you love someone genuinely it is unconditional and sacrificial. I Love my boyfriend very much and I want to see him happy .......even if it is not with me, that is how you know you love someone.

This stupid girl needs to shut her mouth and stop being disrespectful and rude and leave you and your wife in peace.

My prayers are for you and your family, and hopes that you all be happy, and that you continue to find strength in each other.

Shah Rukh

Thank you for your post! It is an honor to feature your blog here.

For our friends from around the world, Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most famous actors from India, and a great ambassador for film from South Asia. I encourage you to watch one of his films to see what a great entertainer he is.

Mallika Chopra

Dear Shah Rukh kKhan,

I love that tag line.

SOME THINGS HAVE TO BE BELIEVED TO BE SEEN....

That reaches such a great depth and encompasses so much.

The intent behind your film making says something as well it is one not born of Ego.

Here are two films in the works that should hope to be planet altering in the shattering of Illusions. While a film in some ways creates an Illusion it can also destroy them and change the playing field and it's rules.

They are connected.

Shah Rukh - There's something very honest and charming about your post. I'm glad you found the success you sought. Nothing like star power!

Since you mentioned your deep respect for women, I do want to comment on that. I have seen 2 of your movies and in both of them your character treated the woman co-star very badly. You may just shrug this off as something to do with the character but it seems to me to be a mindset among the film crowd. If this is the true, it would be helpful if you used your enormous power to remedy the way women are depicted in Hindi films as always running after men (who behave like jerks).

I haven't seen Paheli, but realistically speaking, Bollywood does not stand a chance at the Oscars. Congratulations, though.

Hi Shahrukh,

Happy Belated Birthday. I look forward to your next releases.

Janelle

shah rukh

the west probably believes in the opposite....SOMETHINGS HAVE TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED. Hopefully `paheli' will do the trick for indian cinema. good luck.

sohaila kapur

It's great to believe in something and even greater to pursue it. You have the power and resources to make a difference, and quite honestly, even when you did'nt have either, you managed to make a mark- so if anyone can take the lead in doing something for Bollywood, Indian Cinema and "culture" it's people like you. I did see Paheli, and I am not commenting on it because art is very subjective. As we have done in the past for Lagaan, Shwaas and Devdas, we will spread the word. Insha Allah your film will get success, but if doesnt dont blame god because the Oscars is the battlefield of distributors not talent. Keep experimenting with Cinema, and making films you believe in.

Namaste Shar Rukh,
Happy belated Birthday, only 40!
May you continue to grow and spread the love and talents of your "gift of inspiration" to those who are fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of you on screen.
Blessings be...to thee

It is an understatement to carry on about how your acting has influenced millions...you already know this.

I would like to add, acting on screen is one of the most powerful places to appear in order to reach and convey a message around the world...not many take it to the level of a spiritual experience, but this I experienced while witnessing the energy of your presence.

How does one express deep gratitude and appreciation? There are no words to encompass this soulfelt journey.

Perhaps one day, I would relate the experience to you about the last film I took my Dad, 80 years, to see Veer Zaara (after he had not gone to the movies in over 40 years)...and how this played out in real life, just weeks before he died. I am certain, this event will last into many lives to come.

A couple of months now, I have been having dreams about ghosts and such...then one day, my sister brought home Paheli. Isn't "co`incidence" BEAUTIFUL?

Thank you for joining this wonderful forum Shar Rukh, hope to read you more often.

In love and peace,
Cinda

It is good that i read this post before watching Paheli. Maybe now i will 'believe', so that i may 'see'

Asoka is an amazing film. One of my favorites , and its actually sitting here on my desk because I plan on watching it tomorrow again before work. Paheli, I have yet to see, only because apperently my money order to the Eros distribution center in New Jersey seems to have taken a detour to Moscow or something of the sort. From the pictures I have seen and what i've heard of it, its seems like i'll fall in love with it as well. I'm especially excited for the Indian-ness of it. I am, in this lifetime at least, quite european-decendent-american physically, but India fastinates me and feels more familiar than any other place. I always hope to be able to feel transported across the world when I watch Bollywood films, but so often it feels like a hindi-speaking america, its so 'westernized'. Not that thats a bad thing really, things are as they are, who am I to judge, but I'm always looking for thoes distinctly Indian films, to give me a taste of what i'm longing for. Paheli looks like it will give me much satisfaction on that front, so Yay to it. I hope it does fantastic at the oscars. Not that i really care for awards shows, but I would love for American's to get more exposed to Bollywood.

And, to add the obligitory fan-comment, I would just like to say that as I am an actor (though i don't care much for the latter term) myself (though with sadly few projects under my belt, which I guess is still better than a lot of other 18 year old actresses), I would like to say that you, not only in your films, but in your interviews as well, have been quite the inspiration for me, seeings how your personality comes off more like mine than most other actor's i've read up on, but you've had a lot more experience and time in dealing with yourself, and thats rather useful for me to read in the beggining of my career, when the biggest thing blocking my success is my brain.

And happy belated birthday! I was thinking of you and If I remember correctly, just might have done an amusingly bad "Chaiya Chaiya" rendition down the sidewalks of a local village in your honor.

So anyway, best of "luck" at the oscars & everything else, hope to hear from you again here at intentblog, & thank you. :)

hi shah rukh,

belated birthday wishes.

am big fan of yours. as is my mom , sister and dad.

congratulations on paheli being Indian nomination for the oscars.

I must be frank on this, but Paheli is not the ideal nomination for the Oscars. Amol Palekar has made a bold attempt at making a cinema with a difference and you have acted in a way you always have - brilliant. But there is one elemental flaw in this movie (from an oscar angle), that is, the old rural Indian charm is disgraced by artificial shades of commercialism. It was better made in a typical art movie type. Anyways, all the best. I really hope n pray Paheli wins an oscar.

hi shah rukh,

i went to delhi and drank lassi in winter...only because u spoke of drinking lassi in Raju ban gaya gentleman.( though it was not available i made the shopvaala do it and told him...this is for shah rukh khan)

i went to chandigarh and visited the sarson ke kheths as a tribute to DDLJ.

but unfortunately i did not get inspired to go to rajasthan after watching paheli.

i feel a superstar like u can NEVER carry an art movie on his shoulder just because of the huge image you have in peoples' minds.

it has been the bane of superstars. other examples are chiranjeevi and rajnikanth.
the only exceptions i feel are mohanlal and mamooty. and that too because they are superstars who are not glamorous.

i may not be the greatest fan of yours but defnitely one among the greatest.

but still,i really feel paheli didnt deserve it...u did much better movies....

and again there is another thing.

NOTHING IN THE WORLD COMES WITHOUT DESERVING IT.

maybe u deserve this nomination and i may be absolutely wrong.

all the best.

BUT ONE BIG DOUBT....WILL SHAH RUKH KHAN REALLY READ THESE COMMENTS OR WILL NOT BOTHER AFTER HAVING POSTED HIS VIEWS?

Shak rukh- ur post is very straight forward and honest ..u know what to expect from ur audience ...
i dont think Paheli was the right choice for oscars..it potrays India in a very dream like fashion and in reality people here are so different..i think Swades was one of the best movies to showcase what India truly is..
Best of luck for the oscars ..
hope u win it and bring glory to India..

Dear Shahrukh,

It is a pleasant surprise to see you on this Blog. Now I'm sure, IntentBlog will witness millions of click soon:)
This must be Shekhar Kapoor's coup of sorts:))

All the best for Paheli!

Nice post SRK and great to read your cogent thoughts on intentblog! Mallika, your spider network has immense drawing power :)

Good luck on Paheli!

Dear ShahRukh

The tag line is amazing. What I took home from the movie was that the female protaginist had a desire to be loved and the ghost was a figment of her imagination.Am I right?

Ashima

in asoka, insted of seeing king asoka in shahrukh we saw shahrukh in asoka.

by the way your 'innner n outer world' cd's were much better than both your above mentioned movies.

Paheli reminded me of all the wonderful Amar Chitra Katha books I read as a kid - the colors, the magic, the shepherd's tests... Simply beautiful.

One particular behind-the-scenes clip on the special features on the DVD caught my eye. It shows SRK up on a ladder dropping the bird poop on Rani in the beginning of the movie. Not that I know much about film making, but I'd assume that said a lot about his involvement in the smallest of details.

Hey Shahrukh ,

Nice to see your post on the blog, articulate as ever. I've seen some portion of Paheli on cable ( no, I dont support piracy but tell that to my cable guys, they're their own mafia...but thats another story )

My opinion, its a really sweet and simple folk tale ...
I didnt find it too inspiring , a movie really needs something a little more cerebral to get me . But my roomie loved it !! So there ..

But, I absoultely loved SWADES (watched it in the theatre, no piracy there )...thats a movie I could relate to as an urban Indian... it had a very refined sensibility and I can understand why it didn't click so well with the masses though I wish it had... Very original and very good movie !Might I add that I thought you were your best in that movie.

Nevertheless, good luck with Paheli at the Oscars and all your work.

The tag line is great ,anything intangible has to be beleived in to be seen.

There's something very disarmingly honest about your post, that it's instantly endearing.. especially when you talk about your success and reasons behind moviemaking..I am glad you found the success many people can only dream/aspire of. You have been appropriately tagged the Baadshah and King Khan.. unlike those people at the pinnacle of success and claiming to be 'modest' about their achievements..nothing but hypocrisy..

Looking forward to some great films like Dil Se and Swades..Asoka's character could have been portrayed in a better manner..more as a king and less as a playboy..just a thought..

Hi Shah Rukh,

Welcome to the Blog

have nmot seen Paheli, but if your intention as stated comes accross, then it really stands a good chance at the Oscars. Good luck. Shekhar

Dear Shekhar ,

Since you just posted and we're talking movies, I have to say that Masoom is one of my favourites . Lovely movie, so well made. Have praised to all and sundry earlier , so didnt wanna miss praising the director!

Its deserving of the Oscar according to me..but who cares for my opinion ..or the Oscar :-)

Im not a movie buff but do appreciate good cinema for the fact that it can absorb and transport and excite you once in a while.

So good luck for your craft.
Cheers!

Welcome to Intentblog.

Hi Shahrukh,

happy to see you writing in intentblog.

congratulation to you as your production film "Paheli" is being nominated for Oscar.

You have written about Ashoka oops asoka it should be... and Paheli.

i am great lover of historic films and i had much expectation with asoka but excuse me i dint like it at all. it shocked me when i see how a great character like Ashok was destroyed in your film. sorry for using harsh words but the film was of below avarage catagory. When we see hollywood historic films we came to know that what we are presenting as historic films are nothing but fairy tales. How do you justify Ashoka dancing and singing with street people and with his love interest of course?

As much as I would like it, I doubt SRK will be a regular blogger. If he is, it will be a major coup for intentblog. He does come across as articulate and witty in his interviews and I hope we get to hear him speak on a variety of issues not necessarily linked to films.
Like Nandita and shekhar who have proved that there is so much to them other than films.

I really do hope this is not a one-off post as part of the oscar campaign trial.(Intent blog has some powerful names associated you see - names that can make a difference in oscar land)

Dear SRK....Am a big fan of yours, like million others. Hope Paheli gets an oscar. Can't deny though that bollywood makes very few worthy of getting it, but there are a few which have real substance I reckon...not just superficial commercial ones. Masoom was one.

Pyaar ke Badshah hai aap!! Hope though, you also have a spiritual facet other than just films as Nandita and Shekhar have. I somehow find you've the Sufi core in you. Filled with Passion!!

Love...Sachin

Dear Mallika....If at all you get to read this. Thanks for getting some great names at this blog. I just think though...it would be a great idea if real nasty posts are well screened before they get in here. Forums are a great place to throw all the crappy and nasty energies. Good criticism is beautiful...but often it is taken to the limits with no check on that. Hope you take good care of this beautiful site for so many lovely souls to share their views.

Thanks&Love...Sachin

Dear SRK,
Belated birthday wishes for the 2nd of November and all the best for Paheli's Oscar quest. But like many others, I too feel that Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades would have been a better choice for representing our country. For the first time in all your movies I felt that I was watching Mohan Bhargava and not Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar. You were so good in Swades.

No matter what the box-office fate of a film is you should only make films about stories which you believe in. You make enough money from endorsements, so you are absolutely right in your approach of making films about ideas which you find interesting.

Are you in Bombay at present? I have a completed movie script which I'd like to narrate to you. I will be in Bombay for a week starting from the 16th of November. Will be staying at a Juhu hotel. I think even Shekhar lives in that area....maybe we can have a joint session with Shekhar too and he can direct the movie if he likes it. (wink) What say?

Cheers!
Navin

Dear Shahrukh,
I don't know if Paheli will do well at the Oscars but I do so agree that Indian cinema should have much more international recognition. There is a preconception amongst many that all Bollywood movies are 'kitsch' with simplistic plots and nothing else to offer. I speak as a fan who sits in empty cinemas to watch your films (wonderful Veer Zaara, excellent Swades, bit long though). There seems to be a kind of snobbery amongst 'foreign film' goers that can't seem to admit the sheer beauty and emotion not to mention the music and dance talents, of these films. There is so much to be gained from watching the good Hindi movies and most of yours fall into this category, that any publicity you can give them must be good. And yes, some more positive roles for women is very important.
With love and thanks.

Hello Shahrukh,
I have watched many of your movies including Paheli... It is fun to watch your movies... filled with love and charm... Interesting to see you post here. Your thoughts are sensible and admirable.

Venky

Dear Mr. Shah Rukh Khan,

I have been a great fan of yours for some amount of time now. I know that you are starting to “stir the pot” in my native Poland with your beautiful films. Although I live in the United States, I think that such films as “Paheli” are not only interesting and beautiful to watch, but also very important from the point of view of the situation of women. Personally - despite being a woman myself – I really don’t like the aggressive version of feminism “Made in USA”. “Paheli” is different. It is not aggressive, nor vulgar, it promotes beautiful values intermingled with women’s emancipation and gently shown love story. Sure made my heart skip a beat a few times (just like all of your movies!).
Thank you for this picture and your awesome legacy. I very much love everything you do and will be keeping my fingers crossed for you at the Oscars!
Very best wishes to you.
Gosha

Dear Richard (Thomas),
Thanks for sharing these two links in your post:
What is the secret?

Infinite Play A participatory adventure.
http://infiniteplaythemovie.com/

I explored both these sites and both of them are clever marketing gimmicks. While the first link is a precursor to a future televised event (sometime in Jan 2006) the second one is an out an out con job. The infiniteplay site gives you the impression at first that you are a chosen one by being in the 144000 people who will be "saved" and be the "creators" of a new world. LOL. But this below copy paste from that site gives their intentions away:

"How does it work? You simply make a donation of $13.13 cents to the Infinite Play and the Key maker will generate a key for you. We email you the key and then send you a plastic coated card with a bar code continuing the key. Then when ever you are prompted to supply the key you simply type it in or because it is very long and prone to typing errors you should copy and paste it. You can also purchase the generation of the key for $ 33.13 and get a free CD with the Golden Phi technology seen in the movie."

The Net is full of cheats and frauds. Beware of them.

Cheers!

Hello Shahrukh,

My two girls are die hard fan of yours. They are 7 and 8 year old.On their insistence i got inner and outer world of SRK.I was very touched by one comment of yours....which was that evrything is transient and you do realise and understand that. What all the movies and filmfare award of yours were not able to do...a simple honest remark did.I am with them now as a member of their fan club.

SRK, wow!!! I feel my past clicks on intentblogs are now worth it. No, I come here for Deepak, sorry SRK but you are the guru of all pop-culture gurus. You may be humble enough to call Amitabh a Power but you are the Power.

I just saw Dilwale Dulhaniya Layjayen Gay once again on Sony yesterday. You have matured in Veer-Zara but it was showing in DDLJ. I hope your Paheli wins but I'd be happy enough to see you in tux at the auditorium if I could get a glimpse on western media, if not, I'm sure Indian media would be covering you regardless. I hope you'd wear indian traditional suit and not a tux but hey ... it's just me wishing. Good Luck.

Congratulations for Paheli's being the Indian official entry to the Oscars, and Insha Allah it wins.
I BELIEVE,
Reham-(Kuwait)

Dear Shah Rukh, I want to wish you a lot of success on getting Paheli recognized at the Oscars. Do find the time to post more at IntentBlog.

Sure Paheli will go miles...we will all pray for its success and hope will open gates for hindi movies into new overseas market.Amen

Navin,

On Infinite Play one can read the content and watch the video and it doesn't cost a dime and there are no commericals.

The key is for special access and to play a special level of the game that will have 144,000 players. It is a donation and is not a required purchase to participate in the video itself.

What is funny is the game is designed to keep Ego out of it, which in this case would have worked on keeping you out of it.

As far as TV and Cinema, TV has tons of commercials and the movie house charges for a ticket for a one time showing, I think distibution of film over the Internet is the best deal.

I don't think SRK understands a lot of French, so below is a rough translation of the message from Hawra:

"I am fan of you since my tender childhood, since so much a long time that I do not remember pls. I saw and Re considering all your films, I will not start has the ennumerer or to say you my preferes because they all are exeptionnels and they have all some thing of very special as you you are a person so special... for me and so much of other people... this summer I etai has one in your concert I avai the impression to be an ant... a fan parmis so much of other... but I etai so happy and has the jealous time to know that of another people loves you as much as me!! this year is your 40 birth year and you gave built reve of ambitions so much has your public tellemen people admires you and adores you today... when one asks me who are the person the important pls in your life has share your parents I will answer certainly SHAH RUKH KHAN!! you ' farmhouse given of the hope when Ca did not go you gave me desire for continuing when Ca did not go you gave me reves ambitions you brought to me tellment things in my so important life of the things.... you rythmé of my life!! and I thank u!!! it is thanks to you that I am or I am!! my pls large reve would be to thank you again!! but I believe that I will not find the words... you are a person extraordinnaire.... of my share and on behalf of all those which look at you I say you big thank you and I wish you the happiness of the world in all the fields and especially I wish that you continue to make us love as much.... I love you"

After sitting throught Paheli, twice, I walked out into Times Square and said aloud..."this deserves an Academy Award nomination" then thought to myself, that's not gonna happen. The film left me breathless. As an American I view the nomination of the film differently. It IS good representaion of Hindi film. Not necessarily Bollywood film which in the very word alone is a mockery. The panel chose wisely . Paheli ,though not a HIT in India ,has a greater chance for recogniton in other countries particularly the U.S.

Hello Shah Rukh:
Always look forward to your movies. Whether a comedy (Badshah, PBDHH, Duplicate...) or drama (Paheli, KKHH, KKKG, VZ, Asoka, Josh, Dil Se...) you carry it off flawlessly....
The main reason you are a total favourite with me is because you are as decent humanbeing. Success will always be with you, because you are a decent bloke:)
All the best, always.

And yeah ,,,I have complaints too.... :(

First abour your film 'Asoka'....
It had a powerful storyline but it was too anachronistic to watch all those costumes and dances.,,, but yes ,,,,THREE cheers for its music.

Heyyyy,,,,,that Chawan Prash pppl....are to be hammered ...that advertisement was not-so-alluring to the eyes.

Rest all is fine.....All the best for Paheli @ OSCARS !!!

This time we really really want...the Occident people to see our SuPeR StAr win the Oscars.

Take Care.
We all need you.

Paheli was no way an Oscar candidate (but then, why attach such importance to the Oscars?) but no film was better than this one. All the others were either copies or needless sloppy dramas rapt with overacting. Paheli at least had an original plot, albeit clichéd costumes.

So cool that you are writing here!

Thank you so much for posting! I am a big (western) fan and this is a treat to read!!!

Dear Shah Rukh

I wish you the best of luck with Paheli at the Oscars. Besides India deserving Oscar recognition, it's now time for the American film industry to wake up to your talent and power, and for Americans to share in the joy you bring to your audiences, and Paheli is a good choice for reaching these goals.

As an American fan of your acting and your humanity, I admire the courage, vision and energy that you bring to your production ventures. I've loved every film you've produced, as these films seem to "ring true" compared with many other films you've acted in, perhaps because you've had a deeper involvement with your home-produced films. (I also think the Red Chillies logo sequence is one of the top three logo sequences out there today.)

You're filming in my home city, New York, right now, and I feel that the city is honored with your presence. I wish you and your family a wonderful, productive experience this autumn in New York.

To my favorite actor/star, I wish...

Love

Heather

To Sharukh Khan - This is my 2nd time here since yesterday. I saw Paheli and it brought back memories of my childhood days. Those were days when my uncle used to tell us ghost stories. I enjoyed Paheli because of its originality, music and dances, brightly colored costumes, and most importantly, my favorite actor. You are my favorite actor because you spread love through your movies. My all time favorite is "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai". Last year, I went to Atlantic City to see you perform and I was delightfully surprised when you came off stage and interacted with the audience for a little while. This is one of the things that make you so special. Good luck and I do hope Paheli win the Oscar. God's blessings to you and your family. A die-hard fan of yours - Rohini Singh from New York

Thanks for the great post, Mr. Khan. I just want to add that I was very impressed by your performance in Asoka (And Kareena's), but disappointed that the film focussed entirely on chandasoka, not giving any time to dharmasoka. Given how well you potrayed the dark side of Asoka, I am sure that you would have done great justice to the reformed Asoka. Nevertheless, it was a powerful performance, and I remain hopeful that one day more Hindi films will be shot here in New Zealand, perhaps even bringing you to our shores!

Basically I’m a big fan of yours but must say, that I would have seen Swades as a “worthier” entry for the Oscars. My personal opinion is, that Swades is more meaningful and straighter than Pahieli. I doubt whether the key note/message of Paheli as stated in your post will really be seen. If it proves otherwise, I will be happy for you and the Indian film industry. I’m open to conviction. Somewhere down the line we all will know.

Even if it was slammed above, I like Asoka very much. Otherwise I’m rather a fan of comedy and action so that I like “more” watching you in films like Baadschah, BDHH, KKHH, MHN …..

Wish you the cream of the crop
and I keep my fingers crossed

Shahrukh:
Congrates for your film nomination for Oscars. I haven’t seen your film and may be I will not see that movie at all. Normally I do not have patience to see 2.5 or 3 hours long movies. And I do not mix movies with songs So I do not watch desi movies. However that is not my point. My point is since you are famous actor in India ( lot of people told me about you and I believe them) why you are not trying to act in international film, I mean movie for international audience not only for Indians. Even people with heavy and funny ACCENT like Arnold, Jackie chan and so many other Asian stars are trying and they are very successful in Hollywood. I know shekhar kapoor and Manoj Night Shymlan are very successful however they are behind the camera. Why I am Commenting on this topic despite of I do not watch desi movies, Well, it is because most of my non Indian friends always make jokes about Indian movies and Indian dance number which seems gay to them. Well if you want a proof of it watch Lisa Kudrow's HBO series 'Comeback' 2005 series.I know we as Indian have more appeal then any asian actors and Indian accent is also not that funny like Arnold or Jackie Chan’s accent. At least you guy should try to expand your market for non Indian international market also. Or may be that is way you and other Indian actors want to be. I really respect shekhar and Manoj Night Shymlan..They are awesome.I know Kal Pan is doing good in small roles. However it is time for some Indian actor make big entry in to international movie market.

Jignesh

Congrates for your film nomination for Oscars.all the very best and may u win this award(inshallah)

I have not seen Asoka so I will have to see both. Good luck at the Oscars.

I am happy for your love of your success and your appreciation of the impact your mother and other women in your life has had.

For my own life and in my own experience I have learned to be wary of men who talk up their compassion and love of another gender. Usually your life speaks louder than your words. Not being a beautiful woman I start putting on my track shoes when confronted with men who have lived with many beautiful women in their lives.

As Divya said, if you truly love women maybe you will take the opportunity to portray that for younger men to emmulate.

Oh, and the arranged marriage thing. I would never agree to one. Nor, I imagine would most women my age and disposition.

HI MR SHAHRUKH KHAN!!
wnt to say tht ur films r great specially the movies Kuch kuch hota hai, kabhi kushi kabh ghum and more more.i love all u movies tht i have seen.Ur performens in germany was absolutely great i enjoyed.

Folks - Let's curb our enthusiasm a bit. Paheli has *not* been nominated for an Oscar. At least not yet. The nominations are not going to be announced until the end of January.

Each foreign country is allowed to submit one film to compete for the Oscars. India has chosen Paheli as its official entry. That's all. Now it's up to the Oscar nominating committee to select 5 foreign films from the 100's of foreign films that are submitted to it. These 5 films will then compete for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. So far, Paheli has crossed the tiniest of hurdles - it has been selected by India over all the other Indian films. Whether it can hold its own in an international arena is another story.

Dear Shah Rukh!
I wish you all the best for your plan and I hope you accomplishes your goal.
I'm very touched by your words and I think you are on the right way.
...many times, when I hear a story which brings forth any dimension or a problem that a woman faces in her life, I feel compeeled to partake in that story...
...and many times when we have to face any problems, we get our strength, from you...!
I also think, it has come the time, where people shouldn't smile at Bollywood, but has to take it seriously correctly.
I'll pray that your dreams comes true and hold my fingers crissed that Paheli (a great movie) gets the Oscar...

Love and Regards
Nicole B. / Germany

Hello Shah Rukh Khan,
thanks for these great movies and thanks for producing these great movies. I like Paheli and Asoka very much and many more of your movies like Swades, K3G, KKHH, One 2 Ka 4, Dil Se etc. I wish you and Red Chillies will get the Oscar. You deserve it. Good luck, all the best and a belated Happy Birthday
Supi

Dear Shahrukh Bhai

I have nothing really to say about Paheli, just that I liked it. And I wish you good luck, I hope (like many others) that you may win the Oscar... Inshallah.

Khuda Hafiz

Paheli is a beautiful story.
I have loved it from the beginning.
The fairy tale is beautifully narrated and wonderfully filmed.

Normally I don't have too much belief in the capabilities of the Academy members but as you said:
Some things have to be believed to be seen.
And in your movie I believe without any doubt and with all my heart.

All the best for the nomination and God bless to you and your family.

Hi ShahRukh,
Congrats on the nomination. I am a huge fan and my favorite movie of yours is Koyla. I loved you in that movie. I also am an aspiring filmaker and do believe that India definitely has a chance at the Oscars. If crappy hollywood movies can recieve nominations why not Indian blockbusters? Some of them are far more superior in story content, cinematography and direction than some hollywood movies. Keep the dream alive and we will make it. Inshallah.
I will one day visit India and hopefully make a movie there. {I am secretly {well, not anymore now} obsessed with Rajasthan} Currently I live in Toronto, Canada. I have seen both your shows here and without a doubt you are a performer and an actor first and a star after. I believe that you must have a genuine love for your craft to achieve stardom and you have that quality. Please continue making movies from the heart as they do reach out and touch some of us here who are not familiar with Indian culture but apprecaite it nonetheless. Movies with soul are my passion and please never stop making them. Here's to us winning the Oscars and keeping the dream alive!
Love you,
Shina

I come to this site at least once a day and what a treat it is to find something written here bu the "King" himself. I hope he can also read the emails from this site to know how much he is loved. I am a die-har fan of his and I let his movies speak for itself and I do not pay attention to the media. I always enjoy his movies and always come away with a smile on my face from the cinema. I wish him all the best for the movie Paheli.

Dear Shah Rukh I really wish you all the best for the Oscar nominations of Paheli.
i myself really enjoyed the movie because of how unique and colorful and traditional it was. i really hope the movie really wins atleast some kind of recognition.
all the best!!!

Dear Shahrukh,

...first let me jus explain my extreme excitement about reading your post! It seriously just made my day.

As for Paheli - I thought it was just beautiful. Story aside, screenplay asied it was just such a visual treat. I couldnt be happier that it is going to the Oscars... I just hope the academy sees the beauty we saw -- but even if they dont it doesnt matter because we all loved it.

HAPPY BELATED 40th BIRTHDAY :D :D

I wish you all the best... always!

God bless

I think the second French message also bears translation, so I'm going to have a go:

Can I speak in french, because its hard for me..
so, I had a very difficult childhood, my parents used to fight all the time, and all that kept me going was thinking of you. Shahrukh, you alone who kept my will and desire to live alive, the desire to have a good life, to have plans for the future. I want to thank you for all that hope, love and respect, the beauty that you give people. I'd like to meet you, ..(rest in English again)

Omigod! I have to admit, I'm feeling a bit star struck at the moment! Shah Rukh, you are without a doubt, one of my all time favourite acotrs, pretty much right up there with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. I love depth of the emotion and sincerity that you bring to your roles. You are fortunate to be doing something that you have a passion/love for (as was the topic of one of Bharat's recent blogs). And I think it's great that you intention is to use your talent and celebrity to make a difference. You have been and Insha Allah will continue to be successful in that intention.
Like Cinda, I loved Veer Zaara and the list goes on. I have not yet seen Paheli (love the tag line) but very much look forward to seeing it and anticipate that it will be terrific! All the best to you in your future endeavors.

ps I would love to hear your views on other subjects as well, something tells me there's a lot of wisdom brewing under there .. do continue to post :)

Regards from Germany... All my friends and me we hope you get the international award with Paheli. It`s a very nice movie and we wish you all the best...

God bless you and your family

Karla

Dear Shahrukh! At first, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your amazing films, for your unforgetable roles, for your hard work and for all that gladness, love and happiness which brings to our life, to our souls and to our hearts!! I'd like to thank you for such kind of your respect to women. for your attitude to them!
You are a great man! Thank you very much to your mother for such remarkable, wonderful son!!! Your film "Paheli" is so impressive! (Asoka is so smashing film too!) I am very glad that it is nominated for Oscar! It deserves it a lot!
Best of luck to you and good luck to Paheli!!! We are looking forward to you new films!! Please remember that you are loved in Russia very much and your dedicated admirers are looking forward to you here! With best wishes from Moscow

Congratulations Shah Rukh! Good luck with Paheli at the Oscars. I personally loved it. I'm glad it was the one that was chosen.

Pam, for a lot of women in arranged marriages, it's not a choice, it's a way of life. isn't it great that we can actually say "I would never agree to one"? :)

I know that Paheli will get the Oscars,Inshallah.

Shahrukh good luck with Paheli! You should know that in my heart all your movies are Blockbusters even before I see them and they remain so forever after... Happy B'Day, may you rule our hearts always and forever!

In regards to the Oscar... GO GET EM' KING KHAN!!!

Wow! How cool is it to be able to write to SRK? I am an non-Indian who has visited India many times and have fallen in a long-lasting love with the country, culture, and people. The first Indian film I ever saw was Dil to Pagal Hai in Udaipur, during my first trip to India. My mind was closed to Bollywood before seeing that film. I didn't expect to love it. You and your films always evoke a sentimental feeling related to that first trip to you homeland. Your acting in Dil To Pagal Hai inspired me to watch your other films... and then I even checked out movies you weren't in! You are a great cultural amabssador for India. Look forward to seeing Paheli here in Canada. All the best.

SHAHRUKH I LUV U SO MUCH!! This is why I luv you so much. your are so so so so so so sweet! (Also VERY VERY VERY HOT & CUTE AS WELL;) hehe) You care so much about otherz, and I luv that you have a great amount of respect for women (you don't see that in men very much) not just women, but the way to act with everyone around you.

I'v alwayz wondered, how can you alwayz think of the perfect things to say? You always have such a good answer to everyo question your asked, and the thing which always makes your interviewz so fun to read are, that you act like yourself, you dont try to act nicer so people like you more, you are already very very seet the way you are. You alwayz add some jkz into ur interviewz too, which always make itz really enjoyable to read/watch.

I liked Paheli alot, I really like the effects you used in the movie, they are not crappy like the other movies usually have, they were really kool, like you would probably see in the Hollywood movies nowadayz. Also, you looked sooo hot in a moustache;)

I luv you movies, and I hope you keep making more and more movies in the years to come. I hope you, and your family stay really really happy forever (Only Khushi, No Gham), i luv you! and I hope to meet you one day!

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY SHAHRUKH! (you don't look 40 at all!! how do you stay sooo hot! one of the questionz I'v asked myself for years, and stil havn't gotten an answe . . .:

First Off. Happy Belated Bday! Secondly, after reading your post, I think you've won everyone over by the way you put things into perspective and make them understand the reason behind the things that you do. First off, I think Paheli was an excellent film. According to the critics that keep saying you do the same films, this film also served as an answer to those people. I think people expected more of a "real" film, you know the type without magic in it, like you portray in the role of the ghost. People have lost their imaginations and therefore also reacted to the film accordingly. I guess they werent prepared for it.

I think youre outlook on the film industry and the process in which to make films is absolutely genuine and I think that as you progress in your career not only as an actor but also a producer, people will come to understand your outlook more and god willing, youll be making blockbusters every year. Youve taken risks and done films that you believe in. Continue to do so, because if you dont believe in them then you cannot get your fans and the audience to believe in them.

Good luck, continue to dream and may you achieve all the goals you set in life!

Love you!!!!!
Sonal

Speaking as an American who has fallen in love on her own with India and Indian films (even the bad ones, and there are many!), I have to say that I think Paheli is a very accessible movie for Americans (and other westerners) to watch and see what makes India so mysterious and beautiful and compelling. The story is universal -- love is universal, after all! -- and the photography, music, and performances are so beautiful and so uniquely Indian. The film would not work in any other setting or with any other sensibility. I loved it and will be rooting for it wholeheartedly :-)
And by the way, I liked Asoka a lot too (although not as much as I like Paheli)... mostly because you were in it : -D

Very interesting. Paheli is a movie that is much more than meets the eye. I know that as a producer, you have given your all for this movie, and that is what matters most. I hope that Paheli goes far, both nationally and internationally. If the points you have highlighted are what you use in your launch for the movie, I am sure it will go far.

I would also like to thanks you for all of your inspiring hard work over the years. The films your production houses have generated over the years have all had an underlying moral or principle behind them, which not only makes them entertaining, but also thought-provoking. We need more of these kinds of movies around today.

Lots of Love

Anita Ramakrishna

Hey,

You can catch a review of "Paheli" on "www.mybindi.com"

Dear SRK
In my opinion Paheli for Oscar is excellent choice.I love most of your movies. And for me you are the best actor in the world.I don't think any one in hollywood can come even close to you in acting or even in look too.
I recomended one of my american co-worker to see Paheli. Him and his girl freind loved it very much.I hope and pray God that Oscar will go to Paheli!!!!
with lots of love
Kusum from New Jersey

Hey Shahrukh Khan,
I think that you are a great actor and a great producer. i think your respect for us women is great. I really love You a lot and good luck in everything you do. Allah will protect you forever!

Hey!

You are gratest in the whole world. I wish you the all the best for the future.

So...Shar Rukh,
I can just imagine you reading through all of these comments and attempting a reply :) GOOD LUCK! This blog is beginning to take on the appearance of a Fan Club.
Hopefully, we would not scare you off and you might find it interesting enough intellectually and spiritually in our exchanges. If you read through some of the other topics, you'd know what I mean.
Outside of all the pRAISE coming your way, this is a most informative and discovering venue to visit, even if once a week or so. Personally, I find the dialogue refreshing as most who post here speak the raw truth...no one seeking wealth or glory, just telling it like it is!

Love and prayers to you for your future endeavours.

Talk to you soon,

Cinda

Hi Shah Rukh,

Thanks for your post. I have watched all your films right from 'Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman' to 'Paheli'. You have really come a long way! I liked 'Paheli', though like many others, I too think that you have done much better films than 'Paheli'.

You have always made films that you believed in and wished to make. I applaud you for that. I loved your films 'Dil Se' and 'Asoka', out of which 'Asoka' was your own production. So what if they weren't Super hits. It is good to see that a star like you is willing to step out of the box, leave your comfort zone (i.e. films like DDLJ, KKHH etc.) and experiment. Having said that, however, I also believe that superstars like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and you have such a larger than life image in the minds of the viewers, that the character you portray gets overshadowed by your star image...Just a downside of superstardom, I guess :)

Anyways, keep up the good work and all the best for the Oscars. I love to see how much you enjoy your stardom, because you truely deserve every bit of it!

Wish you good health and many more years of super stardom.

Shikha.

Hi King Khan,

I hope one day you get to read this. Happy 40th Belated B-Day, your not getting older, your getting wiser and sexier. Honestly I have not seen Paheli but for the reviews and storyline I have read it sounds great. Also the pictures I have seen make it look even more great, Rani and you have great chemistry at least from my point of view. I hope and pray with all my heart that Paheli does make it to the oscars and wins. I first came to know of you in 2002 when I watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, I immediately fell head over heels for you. From that movie I fell in love with Bollywood and with you as an actor. The way you transmit all those emotions, if you cry I cry with you, if you laugh I laugh, etc. I love your crying scenes the most. I like other Bollywood actors but you were the first. All this is coming from a non indian girl but a mexican-american who loves you dearly and has learned to love India through your movies. All my best wishes to you and your family. Write to me someday at sad_girl07@yahoo.com hahahaha I guess I am waiting for a miracle.

Love Always,
Liz from the USA

Shah Rukh, maybe you are underestimating the Indian Film Industry…as good as it gets? Not jolly likely…it is FAR BETTER! Since watching Hindi movies, I now know what BAD ACTING is…and it’s NOT Hindi movies! Whenever I watch movies or TV from the West now (rarely, I admit) I think…man, that is PATHETIC!

ASOKA was the best movie I ever saw in my life and I still get goosebumps everytime I hear the eery, haunting opening notes…a movie way ahead of its time. PAHELI, in my opinion, follows very closely behind. I even prefer PAHELI to DEVDAS (another masterpiece).

PAHELI has all the elements of the Indian Film Industry that we, as Westerners, most love and expect of Hindi movies…the culture, vibrant colours, exquisite costumes, song and dance, family values, magnificent architecture, etc. I hope you never feel the need to pollute the genre to pander to the baser tastes of a minority of Westerners.

I am always impressed by your candour and integrity – you leave yourself so vulnerable and show great courage, which is very endearing. God bless you for your brave heart. You should be commended for your commitment to bringing the Indian Film Industry to the world…and not just working for your own Glory.

May PAHELI be the movie to achieve all that you desire, Insha’Allah.

PS I love your Tiger Eyes, but I am hopelessly addicted to SK Silver!

Thank you Shah Rukh, you make my heart smile

with loving vibes from Australia
Sandi

Hi Shah Rukh, amazed by your acting ability! I have a request- will be happy if you make the Bengali film "BAKSHO BADAL" that Satyajit Ray made long time back with Aparna Sen and Soumitro Chatterjee, in Hindi.

Most have to see to believe..the blessed few believe in what is yet to be seen..the ones who have faith..the ones who know themselves to be a 'zariya'..na koi leta hai aur na koi deta hai..isi liye to jo mann ka ho to achcha, aur jo mann ka na ho to aur bhi achcha....to be an obedient instrument of a transcendent will is a little more than fusing the acts of worship, action and contemplation in the fulfillment of one's daily duty..it transcends all three by virtue of a higher consciousness..a consciousness of acting passively..a zariya..

i love your thought process, just penning my appreciation..

lovenhug..radhu chal sadhu

What is wrong with people? Why is SRK so overrated?
I watched Paheli because it was directed by Amol Palekar.
He does not have time to reply to any of these comments. (What an egoistic person)
Paheli has no chance being nominated for Oscar foreign film category.
I liked the film but couldn't digest when a woman gets pregnant by a ghost.

Dear Shah Rukh

When I first watched Indian movies, I had to learn to accept two things that were significantly different from western films: Indian films' length, and their dance sequences (if these were cut out, most Indian movies would be only a little longer than western films).

At the time, I was very depressed, due to having lost some family members. My one solace was Indian films. I ignored books, American movies, television, but watched Indian films several times a week for about a year and a half. To explain my new "habit" to teasing friends, I told them that Indian movies were preventing me from going too deep into my depression, through their portrayal of family values, emotional openness, resiliance, and deep layers of culture, and the dance sequences, which feel like bursts of sun on a stormy day.

In America, we seem to have lost much of the tradition of celebration in dance in popular media. We have hysteria in club dancing, and formal celebration and quiet joy in live dance in theaters (ballet, modern, jazz, ethnic), but there's very little dance in American movies.

Also, American films' portrayal of family and personal emotions and drama is overwhelmingly much less deep, complex and organic than it is in Indian films.

It's these very differences in Indian movies that made them so healing to me. American film is as distanced from the underlying realities of life, as Americans' daily lives are often insulated by wealth (relative to other economies) and technology.

My parents grew up in the Great Depression and World War II. They had a strong sense of what real life was about, and passed that on to me. In reality, death and disaster lurks in every moment of all of our lives. It's only a matter of luck, common humanity and the universal spirit (which we label as this and that religion) that, each day, allows most of us another day to survive.

I think it's probably no coincidence that the last time that dance was a big part of American movies was in the Great Depression and World War II. Dance in popular media is a mirror of the audience's need to celebrate its survival of one more day, with joyous song and dance. If whole generations of people are in denial of the difficulties of life, as many American are, they feel no obvious need to see emotion, song and dance in the films they watch. Americans are focused on more, better, and younger, and deny what Indian movies do not hide: The fact that life is ultimately lethal for each of us, and that each day should be a celebration for each of us, and on behalf of our fellow human beings.

American audiences will need something special to lower their resistance to the joys of Indian cinema. If they do, I feel that they will have an emotional healing due to what they they see and experience in Indian film, as I did.

It's a wonderful thing that you are interested in having Indian movies accepted by western audiences. It was your very vibrant presence in the first Indian films I watched, that opened me up to wanting to see more. I did not understand so much of what I was watching. Now, I can listen to a Hindi film and follow about 50% of the story without reading the subtitles, and I understand a little Tamil, too. I get some of the verbal wit and jokes, and can tell when a relationship is getting closer, etc. My understanding of India's traditions and cultures is very shallow, but I "get" so much more now than I did in 2002 when I saw my first Indian films, when my boss lent me two DVD's. The first was Lagaan, which was excellent, but it wasn't until I watched the second, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, that I wanted to see more, all due to your presence in that film. Yours were the first Indian films I sought out to rent, and then to buy.

Your presence, your humanity and intelligence, which vibrates in all your performances, can bridge Americans into Indian film.

Last night I watched Paheli again, and tried to watch it as I was in 2001, when I knew nothing about the art form that is Indian Cinema. Some of the other posts have mentioned Paheli's accessiblity, magic, beauty, and effects (great color, too). True. But what spoke more to me, as an American looking with partially "new eyes", was your strength in your dual roles in Paheli.

Your presence and performances bridged me into Indian film, and I hope you will do the same for many other Americans and westerners, and particularly at this time, the Oscars foreign film jury. Yet, if not this year, than another. I'm confident that you will be successful in bringing Indian film, as it is, to the western world. An ambassador you are, in truth.

Good luck to you again!

Heather

Hi Shah Rukh! First and foremost, I would like to wish you Happy 40th Belated Birthday. I must say that you doesn't look 40 to me. Congratulations on Paheli being chosen as India's entry for the Oscars. I admire the way you express your thoughts regarding the film and the spirit you show in promoting the film. IMO, Paheli is a wonderful film. I watched it 3 times in the theatre. I knew the film is based on the novel "Duvidha" and is a Rajasthan's folktale. That's the reason I enjoyed it so much. Technically, the film is brilliant. I liked everything about the film; the cinematography, culture, songs & dances, costumes, action, special effects, beautiful sets, direction and performance. IMO, this film has a good chance at the Oscars because it represents India and it's culture in a true sense. Here's wishing Paheli all the best and a lot of success at the Oscars. Inshallah it will win India an Oscar which it truly deserved. I hope you will continue working hard to acheive your unfulfilled desire and pray that you'll get the worldwide recognition through your films because all of us know that no one deserve it better than you. You're the best and I love you so much.
Love,
Sofie (Malaysia)

So...Shah Rukh,
I can just imagine you reading through all of these comments and attempting a reply :) GOOD LUCK!

Cinda

Hopefully you will read this - I am a huge fan of yours, My American husband bought tickets for Asoka Premier as a surprise for me, we went to the party before the movie and waited and waited for you to show up - hrs later you showed up amid a flurry of people and since everyone was waiting for hours to see you it was quite chaotic. We ended up leaving the party and watching the movie which I enjoyed very much as I do all your films. Your Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was my husband's Intro to Hindi movies and though it had no subtitles he endured it for my sake. We now have it on DVD and he claims that it is one of his alltime favorite movies rating just as high as "Dirty Harry". Since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has such strong meaning for both of us (he cries whenever we watch it) we named our miracle baby "Anjali". I am your lifelong fan, I am also happy that my husband likes you, your movies and your acting as we watch all your movies together. Thru your movies I can teach something about India and its culture to my American family and friends. They actually ask to borrow your movies.
I really don't care about the politics behind why you make movies and wether people think you are doing a great job or not, Just keep making and acting in them!!! My only contact with you is thru your films and I want to see many more!!. Paheli is a wonderful film with great color and picturization rightfully so since it is based on a folklore. You did a great job in Paheli in acting and producing it. Sould you win an oscar great!! and if not... you'd still be Shah Rukh Khan - Loved by Millons for who you are and what you do!!! Thank you & Lots of luck forever!!

Dear Shah Rukh
Thank you for your post. I was lucky enough to be at the Paheli press conference in London. Your passionate and persuasive championing of Paheli and Hindi cinema in general left a lasting impression. It was a privilege and an education to see you in producer- rather than star- or actor-mode. Since then I have seen the film 3 times on the big screen and even noted some differences in the sub-titling at the different venues - but maybe I am believing something I didn't actually see here!!
But at the press conference if my memory serves me correctly (a BIG IF) you said that Paheli was not the film to take Hindi cinema global. Now it looks as though it might well do that or make a very significant contribution - I hope you really enjoy eating those words.
Good luck with Paheli
Keep doing what you do
Best
Glenda

Hi! The world of dreams King Khan,

I think super star shah Rukh is the most wnated message for the world of cinema. A bus station is where a bus stops.
A train station is where a train stops, so Shah Rukh is the only actor that we all stand for.

I wish Paheli all the luck at the oscars because it is a short and simple movie. I found it quite traditional and different to the other movies. Shahrukh you was fantastic in the movie along with Rani and hope this film does get recognized by others. Looking forward to Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna.

im sure ur wife is very kind bcz u love her
take care for ur family first after ur carriere
ur freind from morocco

ok, do you have any idea how much i love you? i've grown up with hindi movies but never really seemed to harbor deep appreciation for any of them. apparently it comes with my critical nature. i'd seriously have to doubt, however, which film of yours i could possibly not have seen...and loved (kal ho naa ho remains a personal favorite). i know you put in a lot of effort to bring entertainment to your audiences--and believe me, you have. by far. i don't think i could ever find the words to express how much your screen presence really signifies. paheli was an amazing movie. and you really needn't justify (not that you are) why you chose to produce such a film--it was most original and grounbreaking in its own terms. if by any chance of miniscule probability you've made it to the end of this comment, i'd really like to wish you the best for all your future endeavors.

you honestly don't look 40.

salaam ...shahrukh khan
from the butoom of my heart i speak when i say that i love you , i know it is just a word you hear everyday from a fan or two , but it means alot to me when i say it out loud becouse its from a heart that sat still for 3 years waiting for a chance to express its love for you i feel like i know the person beaneth the good looking actor whic is enriching my love for you .
anshallah i see you in kuwait
my friend love you also is sara and hamsah and me

i've seen one of ur many movies before (devdas), and looking forward to seeing paheli. ur acting and singing r beyond splendor...THEY'RE TREMENDOUS!!!! u happen to be one of my fave actors (even surpassing the ones in hollywood). may god continue to bless u and ur lovely family.

Salaam Shahrukh,
First of all happy birthday and many many congrates for the nomination of paheli for Ocars...yeah i will pray for paheli inshallah it will win. Good Luck
I LOVE YOU!!

Hi Shah Rukh
It's dat really you!!! I can't believe it. Well I am from Singapore and I have been your fans eversince I watched you in Maya Memsaab in 1993 and followed by Darr in the same year. I juz loved the way u bring out your characters alive in screen. Since then, I enjoyed all your movies even the bad ones. I watched all your concerts in Singapore, never missed any one of them. Juz love all the concerts u had done in Singapore. When will you come to Singapore for a concert? U are simply the greatest actor of all time. Take care of ur health ok

I saw Paheli, since my previous post here, and i am convinced that your post was genuine, shahrukh.

dearest shahrukh,

i cant believe you posted on a blog! thats totally cool. actually, i dont know if you've heard of the movie Garden State (you should check it out-- its a small independent film but was a big success), but the main actor in that has had a blog for a long time now. i think its such a great way to show the people that even you, a big filmstar and all, care about your fans and are in fact just a normal person.
anyway, ive loved all your work and i especially like it when something different is done. some of your films i feel have not deserved the credit they should have gotten (dil se.., asoka). keep on doing excellent work. you will always be my #1 man!
i love you so much! (since i was 10 yrs old haha- dont get freaked out now..) i came to india this past summer and saw your house hehe, but im not a stalker so dont worry.
wow, ive written too much already-- i hope you actually read these comments.. that would be way cool.

Peace & love always,
Preetika
Houston, TX

PS- i hope you had a great bday! best wishes to you and your family

Dear SRK,
It is NOT cool of you to have not replied (either individually or collectively)to hundreds of messages that you have received on this blog. Was your post just a one off to promote Paheli's Oscar nomination? I understand that you are a very busy star, but you can always blog in your car while travelling to shoots or whenever you find a little bit of leisure time. I suggest you can post one msg per week at least. It will be therapeutic for you too. LOL. When you are at the top, you need to stay connected with your fan base. You can take a leaf out of Amitji's book who replies to every message that he receives (well almost, wink) either personally or through his secretary.

I understand that you are scheduled to be in Doha, Qatar on the 16th of November alongwith Ash for some Store Launch or something. When will you be back? I am coming to Bombay on the 16th for househunting as I'm shifting my residence there. Will be there for a week. As I told you earlier, I have a written a movie script which I'd like you to hear, so it'd be great if we can fix up an appointment. Pls contact me at cosmicsuperstar@gmail.com Hope we can work together soon.

Cheers!
