Totally Gay

Gotham Chopra - November 15, 2005

The hype has begun aroun Brokeback Mountain which comes out ina few weeks. It's the "Gay Cowboy" movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal as two young ranch hands whose friendship grows into sexual intimacy and love and the subsequent drama that becomes their lives as a result.

I haven't see the movie but am just going off of all the buzz that's already been generated. It's going to be very interesting to see how this film opens in the US. This is clash of cultures - forget Cowboys vs. Indians - this is Cowboys vs. Gays!

On the other hand, being gay has never been so marketable. Truthfully I am not sure that I would have seen this movie but now that it's becoming somewhat of a social statement, a red state vs. blue state sort of thing, I almost feel, like voting, it's my civic duty to go see it.

Americans - and American males in particular - still feel squeamish about homosexuality. Apparently the movie includes both soft intimacy (kissing) as well as more graphic sexuality. Snickers during the trailer may indeed turn to sneers during the actual film. Why do we have such a resistance to homosexuality - especially amongst men?

Some critics are already predicting that this is the end of young Heath and Jake's budding careers - that they'll never shed the "fag image" and will find audiences unlikely to take them back as straight men - apparently unable to distiguish the definition of the word "acting." Poor Heath Ledger had to go off and get his female co-star in the movie pregnant just so he could, ya'know, be all straight and shit!

I wish I could predict that Borkerback Mountain is going to open HUGE. I do think (hope) there is a movement behind it, that will fuel its popularity and celebrate it's boldness. But I know that there's going to be firece resistance. I for one, will do my thing, go see it, and cast my vote.

fyi - here's the trailer: http://www.brokebackmountainmovie.com

I'm hoping if Philadelphia could do it so would brokeback mountain..cant wait to see it

I read somewhere that in Wyoming there is a movement of people who are upset that the movie is breaking the depiction of "cowboys" and the "masculine" image of their State.

In the same article, it talked about how this could become a front runner for the Oscars. And that there is totally a red vs. blue mentality behind this. Since "liberals" generally control Oscar voting, its a way for them to make a point about cultural shifts.

I too cant wait to see it.

Mallika

I hope this kind of negativity will do for brokeback mountain what it did for passion of christ and ang lee can go laughing to the bank and make more exciting thought provoking movies..his are a visual delight..
I have to catch up on so many blogs but loved your blog about gotham, mallika..being the older of two, its the same story here..my sister Kalyani insists she has to go back to being my maid in waiting every time I go home..its automatic regression each time.. and that to this day my folks let me get away with anything..ah well!

I am also waiting for the movie. Yes, I will also watch the movie as if it is my civic duty.

Hello Gotham and Everyone,

I wonder if I will see the movie? This is my problem. I am real comfortable seeing a man and women kiss in the "lover" sense of the word, but seeing gay men and women kiss in the "lover" sense of the word is uncomfortable for me.

I believe in homosexuality just as I believe in heterosexuality, but, still, seeing it in action is uncomfortable for me. I am sure it is because I am just not used to seeing it.

Is it time for homosexuality to come out of the closet, in the "general public" sense of the word? I think so. It is probably time I get comfortable seeing homosexuality in action and on screen.
peace,ruth

Hi,
I'm new in here ... found this blog by accident. Anyways, found your post interesting ... the movie however is trying to sell with just the hype or fascination society has of alternate lifestyles which is totally lame. It's over done and I think everyone is far from over it. How about a movie that has a story that features characters that are gay versus selling a movie on the amount of sexuality you'll see between the lead gay/lesbian characters. And since I've already said this much let me just add and none of the overdone homosexual inuendos ie the snapping fingers, extra razor sharp eyebrows, hope you're catching on ... LOL Hope ppl don't find this post offensive ... I'm not a homosexual myself but I do have friends that are so I hope I'm not going to get bashed for an opinion.

Ruth: Yes, go! Go see the movie and celebrate the diversity of this world. Remember that this isn't about sex, but about love. And while the depiction of same-sex sexual activity in isolation may be uncomfortable for some, within the context of a loving relationship, it is just as beautiful as any other.

Judging by what you have written in other posts, you are obviously a loving and peaceful woman and I'll bet if you open your heart to this, you will see that our love is expanded, not diminished, by it.

Gotham - I have a feeling this is going to be a huge movie. The gay community alone will see to that but with the support of the rest of us, we can, as you say, vote with our tickets. I too look forward to seeing it.

Love, Sheba

Well I was talking to my mom about genders to my mom the other day and had interesting conversations with some women at work about it as well.
Like king, no I don't want to be queen I want to be the king. I think somewhere along the lines king got confused with a penus but I think technically king is leader not necessarily has to be a man.
The whole female/male thing is such illusion though of course illusion exists so it does.
Me and my mom were talking about why Gabriel can be a guy and girl. She thought it was a guys name but I said it could be both. When she asked why I came up with my own theory relating to angel Gabriel.
I think angel Gabriel was a woman but because she was so strong, powerful and maybe appeared tough like a guy, the nicene creed decided to make angel Gabriel a guy. So now we got Gabriel girls and boys. What is interesting is that in that movie with Keanu "Constantine", Gabriel was in there and it was a she.
Physical reality is an illusion and some of these guys are totally girls man, that's why they are gay. Plus, it is great population control!
Who cares if it looks weird.
I wanna know why there are drag queens and not drag kings. I wanna know why there are so many gay movies/shows/hotlines but not lesbian...

That was the great secret that many cowboys were gay and sheep and cow friendly with all those lonely nights on the prairie together.

Of course this reminds me of the great dilemma face by Sinbad. He came to realize that his wife was his reincarnated sister.

He was distraught for to continue his relationship would be to commit incest.

But he was confused what was the meaning of this, how could the women he love be both his wife and sister at the same time? What was the meaning of these roles anyway? Why was incest so wrong? The royal families did it. God put the offspring of Adam and Eve and Noah in the position of having to do it, so it must not be a great sin if the stories are true.

Sex was no longer the same because it was his sister and he knew could not get it out of his mind. Then it got more confusing, he found out his best friend John was his reincarnated wife. Eventually this leads Sinbad to become gay but was he really gay or just having sex with his former wife?

This is why we normally forget our past life experiences and tells us a deeper truth.

~Richard Thomas

Sheba,

Thank you for your kind words and yes, I will go!
You are right about the fact the love will be expanded, not diminished by homosexuality.peace, ruth

Hi Rita Raju,

One reason why you don't hear as much about lesbian movies/shows/hotlines goes back to what Gotham said about how males/American males get squeemish when it comes to homosexuality especially amongst men. Why do they? I'm not sure--it's all been conditioned into them. I think in some ways it is more difficult for a male to "come out" over a female--in America anyways, simply because of the general society's notions of homosexuality. I think America is just more fascinated by gay males over females. The question is, do straight males get squeemish when they see two women kissing??? Probably not.

Believe me, there are plenty of drag kings out there...but that's another story. As for lesbian themed movies, I could refer you to a few that are in no way X Rated--yes, they acually have plots!

I too would love to see this movie, but living in a smaller city where the majority are Republicans, and all the theaters are locally owned by Mormons, I seriously doubt it will come here. I'll be waiting for the DVD.

Sad, but true.

interesting post and comments :)

Philedelphia made it, but it didnt have in ur face love scenes. I've seen an interview and some trailers on the telly, this does.

What I'd really like to see hitting the screens more is sweet, normal, romantic comedies ... like 'all over the man'

I am not interested one bit in a gay movie. Call me old-fashioned, but I think homosexuality is an act against Nature and therefore wrong.

Many who condone this practice may be hiding an inner, secret side.

Debby.

and debby,

many who condemn this practice may be hiding an inner, secret side.

Like Spokane (Washington) Mayor .......

Bharat,

I do not know what you're trying to insinuate, but homosexuality, in my view, remains a crime against Nature, and I am not afraid to say so, and say so openly. So, what might I be hiding? I have nothing to hide, my friend.

Good night.

Debby.

What do you mean by crime against nature? Where it is mentioned that it is a crime against nature?

"Why was incest so wrong? The royal families did it."

I agree that brother/sister incest doesn't seem wrong, but parent/child incest is definitely creepy and I am glad that it is regarded as a crime.

As for lesbian-themed movies, there are many very good ones out there - The Bostonians, High Art, Aimee and Jaguar are some of my favorites.

I don't know if I'll end up seeing this movie though since cowboys don't particularly interest me. But if word-of-mouth proves it to be a good film, I'll see it purely on its merit and not because of its theme.

If someone is gay, they're gay. If someone is straight, they're straight. I don't care what people do in their bedrooms. The mainstream is always going to be "shocked" by gay love--why? because it is different from them. Hollywood has crappy love scenes in general, but if they do a great gay scene. Great! It won't interest me much to watch. Why? Because I am not a gay man. Gay people love each other. Straight people love one another. Whether cowboy, business man, neighborhood casher...it's the story itself that counts. The story's gonna have to have more to it than just gay cowboys for me to be impressed. What is so great about it? That they find love in cow manure? I am not understanding the hype.

typo: casher should say cashier

Maybe it is a universal metaphor for love...stepping in a pile of sh*t?

fascinating discussion, folks. were you aware that there is a whole segment of gay folks who are obsessed with line dancing? this shouldn't be a big surprise as i've heard country music is huge with heterosexuals too. i'm with gotham...definitely going to see the movie. money (or votes) do count...although most don't seem to get this or care (given declining voter turnout statistics!)

Working on sexuality for many years and intensely with gay men have yeilded many interesting truths. Men per se (not just American men) are far more uncomfortable with homosexuality than women. When probed the problem seems fear(denial) of their own possible proclivity. Largely both gay men and those in vehement rejection of it have complex difficult relationships with fathers since childhood. There is almost always a lack of emotional bonding with the father, either because he was aggressive, could not express delicate emotions with son or has 'high', tough standards for sons. Sometimes its just that the father was very 'successful' and larger than life and the son felt 'eclipsed'. Masculinity is a far more difficult and rigid prototype handed to men than femininity is to women. 'Meeting' the standards creates the greatest rejection of perceived 'fraility' and homosexuality is seen by most of the men who reject it (including many gay men who are struggling to come out of the closet) as 'fraility'.

As for the film, like some of the others, I too think that apart from films like 'Torch Song Trilogy' and Philadelphia( in a limited sense since its stength was the AIDS issue) the complexity of being a gay man, dealing with love realtionships/intimacy per se within family/lovers/freinds etc has hardly ever been dealt with credibly in Hollywood. L'homme est une femme(if I remember the title correctly) was another french film which dealt with homosexuality with greater depth. I feel that 'putting the issue out there' is a passe stage. Even in India where many more gay men/women are surfacing with out there life styles, a genre of work highlighting the emotions and confusions would go a long way in sensitizing/informing and representing love/complexity and the struggle to reconcile desire and acceptance. As the title of Brokeback claims 'Love is a thing of Nature'. Unfortunately the 'nature' of who you are and become when you are gay is not dealt with sufficient depth in cinema and perhaps that is why people are still caught in talking baout it being 'unnatural' and 'ungodly'.

This is why I love blogging - the fact that we are mobilizing discussion and perhaps driving an audience for a film that I hope will generate a public discourse on homosexuality in our society. Grant it - this site is pretty biased and except for Debby's view, I sense we're all coming from the same generally accepting place. Debby - not sure if you were targeting with me regarding the ref of hiding some secret homosexuality. Bet I'd get a lot of comments if I came out of the closet on the blog! Alas, my wife may not be pleased! But I am curious where you're hostility and religious rooted intolerance for homosexuality comes from. I could always rely on that "there's homosexuality in the bible..." (and in the Church of course). But then again, there's a bit of everything in teh Bible, isn't there? Anyway - thanks for the vine, folks. Keep it coming.

Hi Gotham,
i wanted to actually do a story on you for an India based magazine called 'platform'. its a creative arts and entertainment magazine.
i apologise for writing about it in your comment section but had no other way to get across to you.
do let me know if you would be interested as then we can take it further.
thanks
shruti.

...was driving past the shanty-ridden streets in mumbai gossiping over the cell phone...was gnawing at my subway loaf as i meandered thru the hell-hole streets of colaba fishing village...was watching a film as the earthquakesruck northeastern india...will probably watch brokeback mountain at the multiplex with friends/family whilst celebrating an event such as a birthday,etc...

isnt that what urban life has come to, so why raise issues over issues which have always been just part of human existence...

...everything was, everything is and everything will be!

...categorization belongs to the prehistoric times and acceptance with a good measure of tolearance tossed in is the need of present times!!!

I probably won't go see the movie. I live in the country near a small town and I doubt the theater in town will show it. But I'm pretty sure if I lived in or near a major city again like Detroit, I still wouldn't go see it. Why? It just doesn't sound interesting to me, and before someone makes an assumption about that, I'm not anti-gay either. What two people (or three) do intimately is their business. Strangely enough, I wouldn't pay to see it if it were a hetero couple on screen. I'd rather be having sex then paying to watch it.

Even if I did go I wouldn't be voting by buying a ticket anymore than I would be by entering a voting booth. I've yet to see the issue on a ballot anyway. It's being handled by the legislators from what I can see. They've figured out how to generate more tax revenue by legalizing gay marriage. Married couples pay more, right? And more lawyers will be gainfully employed when they divorce, and when they settle estates after death (big taxes in that), and....I'm kind of surprised the gay community has allowed their intimacy to be used as a pawn by legislators in the first place.

(Ok, I've just saved 8 bucks. Now where did I put that Sears Craftsman tool catalogue that came in the mail..?)

i have yet to see this movie, although it has played here in canada, already. always nice to see men groping each other.

And don't forget...some people are just BORN GAY! There doesn't necessarily have to be an unloving father or mother involved as to why a person is gay. Sometimes it just is. There are no "crimes against nature" being gay. There are no "inner secrets".

Well said Tiffany. There are even some scientific reports suggesting that being gay is "intrinsic". It is not against nature.

You guys should read about the Bonobos tribe. In their society they have Peace, no violence and it is not male dominated. It has everything to do with their attitude about sex.

One of my favorite questions especially for the "religious" minded and priests is...

Is there sex in heaven?

As you can guess they have never been asked or thought about the question because these thoughts are not part of the programming.

Probably not because there is no need to procreate. So we probably don't have sex organs in Heaven, why would we?

If we don't have sex organs what sex are we in heaven?

The last question of course is, how can Heaven be so great if there is no Sex?

Well anyway it is a good party question.

~Richard Thomas

Richard,

Interesting comment, "Is there sex in Heaven?"

My guess is that there is no sexual distinction in Heaven. What need would there be for it?

After all, when we are born into this earth walk, entering as one sex or the other is perhaps our first polarizing experience; it is the first time we "choose sides" as it were, setting up the remainder of our earthly experience to be about choosing sides, e.g. good vs. bad, red vs. blue, hero vs. victim, etc. - A human challenge that can only be overcome with a divine intention.

Maybe this human experience is supposed to be about learning how to NOT choose sides. Maybe the human opportunity is to learn how to choose BOTH sides, or BE both sides.

Oh, for Heaven's sake. I think I am on to something! Thanks, Richard, for for the inspiration!

Love, Bo

Dear Gotham, you make me laugh mate, ha,ha,ha,
I couldn't help it, just your description "..includes soft intimacy (kissing)..." I don't know I just fely your tenderness mate, ha,ha,ha I'm laughing now again, cracking up!! Anyway this could all be interpreted by you lot as some uncomfortableness on my part, but actually it's just a deep joy I feel in all it's simplisity without any baggage, just a gift from Gotham I guess, anyway I am not gay either, but I do wish the movie success I think, I don't know I'm not one on keeping up with the Jones' if you know what I mean , I do live in Sydney where we have the BLESSED martigra, or mardigra what ever it is called, been once and well I didn't feel much entertainment or thrill and I really don't know what all the fuss is about, some of you American guys and gals love it though don't ya, ha,ha, anyway sorry if I'm stirring I think that's what I'm meaning to do I don't know I'm just writing and babbling...sorry.
Loving you all in Joy, especially you Goth, ha,ha. Gary.

Maybe we should all try to think about what the opposite sex REALLY THINKS. You know how the woman always thinks she's right, or the man always thinks he's right. Like if you're female take any situation you're in and try to think about what that situation would turn into if you were male...like, hmmm...how would a man react to this?

Hi Gotham,

my e-mail is shruti495@gmail.com

I look forward to a time when we judge films with gay characters as good or bad, rather than good or evil. Spainish film has evolved to that point. In Segunda Piel (1999), Javier Bardem plays a gay man and there are some explicit love scenes. Unfortunately, the plot and dialogue are a bit lame. I hope Brokeback Mountain will be good art as well as good politics.

Sounds like a movie I'd like to see! I don't know why, but I have always liked gay men... I think there's something so sincere about them. Seriously, gay men are usually much more sensitive and loving than many straight guys, at least here where I come from. Most of the men here find homoseuality disgusting and talk about it like it's a joke. But I guess they're just heartless...

By the way, I love the slogan of the movie: Love is a force of nature... :)

http://shemales.anzwers.net/shemale/supporters/buy.html complimentwhosewondered

I wish I could understand how two men get off on kissing each other. One comment states that I am hiding my inner self. I just like women not men. It is vile and vulgar to me as a person.

Now someone reading this might say that I hate gay men. As a matter of fact I have a brother and several friends that are gay. I love my brother very much and respect those that I consider a friend.

I just can’t famine the thought of being attracted to another male and want to be sexually involved with him. That is the vile and vulgar part of it all.

You guys are the 77466 best, thanks so much for the help.
