World Good News Day

Anupam Kher - January 13, 2006

In the last few years, everytime I go through news... either in the newspapers or on television, I discover that news all over the world means bad news. What used to be on the 9th or the 11th page of a newspaper, one finds on the front pages these days.

Satellite channel is relatively new in India, and so are the numerous news channels. Every ten minutes you have a "breaking news" sign flashing on almost all the channels. Breaking news is always about some disaster / catastrophe / murder / rape / deceit / bribery / political upheaval. Newspapers are mostly carrying the similar kind of news in bold letters.

To me such news items add to an unknown fear. Fear of living in a world where nothing is right. I want to believe that goodness also exists. I want to have faith in kindness, in honesty, and I do see all this around me.

Today everything has zeroed down to how you market things:

Fathers day / Mothers Day / Independence Day / Friendship Day / Valentines Day / Teachers Day.

Is it possible to expect a WORLD GOOD NEWS DAY?

On that day, whether on television or in the newspapers, we only read good news? We only read about love, passion, goodness. We only read stories of courage, of honesty, of joy, of trust?

Can that day be 31st of December… just a thought.

I wish Like you and so many others Dear Anupamji, but....I reckon media is convinced what sells to human nature and what doesn't.

Good wishes...Sachin

Beautiful thoughts which are definately shared. World Good News day may indeed one day happen!

I'd like to see a 'Good News TV channel'

It would just report the nice news stories, and would showcase cultural diversity from around the world. It would have stunning nature documentaries with incredible landscapes and beautiful cinematography. It would show the film Baraka - 'blessing'.

It would talk about great human accomplishments of the past, and would have documentaries on Einstein and Gandhi.

And it would show films like March of the Penguins, which show the wonder and intelligence of the natural world. And it would have films about dolphins too, those guys know how to live!

One day it will happen.

Looking to a brighter future...

Jules

What would other people have on their Good News TV channel?

Welcome Anupam Ji,

Being an actor I am surprised that you are asking this question. What about a movie that starts with everything is good and ends the same.

Any one will be interested in watching that movie??.

I believe that this is something to do with Human nature. We probably get attracted to bad news or may be the fear that drives us to watch this type of news flash.

As far as your idea of World Good News Day, I am with you.

What about if a disaster happens on that day?? Just Kidding..

Yogi Selliah

Hello Anupam Kher,
I embrace your idea, and wish to say, perhaps once a month, could be World Good News Day, and perhaps, it can be on the first day of each month!

I say Yes - to love, passion, goodness, courage, trust, Joy!
~ Kate

Maybe I was just describing the Discovery channel... I've never really watched it. In honesty I don't even own a TV!

That's one way to get round all the bad news in the world. Opt out! And be happy in your own world. And think of the dolphins having constant fun in the sea...

What kind of things would consitute a good news story on good news tv? I'm not even sure...

It's sad... I don't think people have become addicted to fear. The media just doesn't present them with much alternative.

Hi Jules,
Like you, I do not watch much t.v. - hardly at all (though I do own one, I choose not to be owned by it! :)

I also choose the media I want to read. I think you are correct on your insight, that most people do not inherently feel fear - but we are often bombarded with 'bad' news, news that makes us feel the world is not safe or caring.

I have watched programs on the Discovery channel. If you watch cable t.v. - that is one to enjoy.

I say Yes, to discoveries now and yet to come! :)

~ Kate

Wow, i got very excited to open intentblog to find a post by you! Welcome to the intentblog family :).

I am a bit torn on the topic. On one hand, I think its important to bring the "nasty" parts of humanity into the mass-awareness. To work out negative energies or patterns.. one first must understand them. Things like corruption and manipulation that were hidden in the shadows for so long come to the surface... the "light" if you will, so they can be seen for what they are.

But then again - people are so quick to fall prey to the fear energy! It becomes an addiction, and suck people right back into the shadows.

I think what should be in the news are stories of what happens when you can't see past the fear of the world around you!

Oh well, as conciousness goes, so goes most of the media. But then again, the reverse can also be true.

It was a pleasant surprise to see ur Blog here....hope It won't be mere guest appearance like how Shah rukh did......
kitana achchha ho ki kabhi logo ke comments ko padh ker unake comments ke bare me apana comment bhi jab tab post kerte rahe tab to koi bat bane......

much love

Ek bat bolane ka man ker raha hai.........ye Vikas khanna ke bolg me 23 comments the, kuchh 2-3 comments questions ke form me the,23 comments itane jyada bhi nahi hai ki Vikas ko padhane ka time nahi mila ho....is tarah ke Bolgs per comment kerna Idiot ke jaisa lagta hai......I hope ki Anupam kher ji apana blog post kerne ke bad 5 min time nikale logo ka comments padhne ke liye....

In the world of sorrow... I dont want news to be sugar-coated at all.. Let it come! Let it burn our hearts enough.. for all to act .. or perish!

"Is it possible to expect a WORLD GOOD NEWS DAY?"

Dil ke Bahlane ko Ghalib yeh khayal achha hai! :-)

(Its a nice thought to kid yourself, Ghalib!)

When I was in India recently, I could not find ONE day when the frontpage of TOI or HT had anything other than Bollywood or Cricket "news" items as the main item!

I guess they have decided to change from newspapers to Tabloids and somehow "pre-empted" your request!

Cheers,
Desh

I love it Anu!

Good News Day...I think it is more than worth it to have, for starters, once a week.

We need to reinforce the positive, goodness, honesty, noble deeds etc. more often than not.
Children growing up in today's society are so overwhelmed with the negativity and violence they see and experience through media, tv and other means, there needs to be a balance.

I am glad you brought up this topic.
There is a need for "Good News" to spread around the world, very much like a "Peace Cell" in itself.

That which we practice...we become.

Love and prayers for making this a reality.

Namaste,

Cinda

Yea it's totally possible because there are non-mainstream people trying to do it, probably mainstream too. It is such an illusion...
God, an illusion within an illusion... sheesh.

When the news (specially from India) makes me really depressed, I visit this site. It really helps to know there are so many good people out there

Thank you for the link Divya. Here is some good news that will perhaps change the minds, a little perhaps, of extreme India bashers like Jignesh and Tanzan.

On that day, the minds behind the money, and the consequent populaces they displaced, physically, mentally, and spiritually, shall be excorcised, they shall be dispossessed: the day The Republic is born!

The day when the good news rules the land.

Hey Ravi,
I am not extreme person however I am brutally honest about India and closed society and narrow culture…
I am not sure about Tanzen However whatever I know about him is, he pointed out plagiarism of so-called professional accomplished freelance writer and media personality. And He became extreme.
I mean being honest about something is extremism than I would love to be extremely honest person.

Jignesh

Dear Mr. Anupam Kher,

I am sooo happy to see your name on this blog. You're just fabulous...& your thought about the whole "World Good News Day" is a wonderful concept...however why should we just celebrate one particular day as the good news day; when we can celebrate everyday?!?!
I agree with you about the whole sad/bad news spreading an unknown fear around the world. But remember that this unknown fear exists within us...it is an internal conflict that we must learn to confront instead of spreading it onto others-we can overcome it.

But no matter what, even with negativity all around us, we should all try to find goodness in anything and everything. Remember life offers both ups and downs, we must learn to take the best from the two. When itz beyond our understanding; at times we complain-why do bad things happen?...well i don't really know. But being an eternal optimist at heart, it probably happens to make us realize and appreciate the goodness//good people that surrounds us and not take things for granted. We should learn to value what we've got...and try to make a difference on our own instead of waiting for someone else to make a move.

"Tomorrow will bring a brand new day,and all your worries will be a world away.." Always try to think beautiful thoughts especially before you go to bed. It reminds us that GOOD still exists...and if there is hope there is always a way! *Cheers* xox~ MadZ :)

Hi, welcome to intentblog.I have enjoyed your fabulous acting in shows and movies.I like the concept of a "Good News Day". God bless.

Dear Jignesh,

Thanks for your response. May be the word extreme is a bit extreme :). Anyhow, love to see some suggestions from you about how India can improve herself. After you seem to be of Indian origin, and your suggestions could be a part of the solution.

Regards,

Ravi

Mr. Kher,

I understand your frustration and your sincere hope to see the realization of a world news day. But, I am afraid, it is not going to happen anytime soon.

Good news is no news. You can be the kindest, gentlest, most loving person in the world: philanthropist extarordinaire. But your acts of kindness are not likely to make the news. Which means: there is hope for mankind. There is more good (than bad) being done every day in the world. Good people vastly outnumber bad people.

Unless an event is sensational, dramatic, threatening, salacious, ugly et al, it will not be news.

But we can rest assured that good people are in the majority.

One cold winter morning, a few years ago, I was driving my aunt Sandra to the airport. It was pitch dark around 5:00 a.m. The vicious north winds and blowng snowing would have caused frostbite to set in within minutes of exposure to the elements.

Suddenly, the ride became bumpy and the car began to vibrate. Something was not right. I quickly pulled over to the side on the narrow road, under construction, to investigate. It was a flat tire, the last thing you want happen when the prevailing conditions are this bad. Have you ever had to change a flat tire when it's was minus 30 degrees? I began to scramble to figure out the best course of action.

I began to look for the telephone number of a tow truck company and a cab company. I was not going to attempt to change that tire and feeze to death. It was a rough situation to be in, given the circumstances. I was feeling a little worried. Missing the flight was beginning to look real.

Then, out of the blues, a good Samaritan, an aircraft mechanic on his way to work, stopped by. He asked me to pop the trunk. He then swiftly went into action and took the 'dummy' tire out, the jack and all...like a true pro.

Within minutes he had the flat out, the dummy on, and we were on our way. It was a happy ending. I felt uplifted and relieved knowing that there are good and kind people in the world who are willing to risk a lot to help people they don't even know. Aunt Sandra did not miss her flight.

The gentleman took off in his truck. I thanked him. He did not want any recompence, reward, nothing. What a great person he is! But his kindness will not make the evening news!

On the contrary, if he was a crook and stopped by, whipped out a gun and robbed me, that would have been news!

Regards.

Jignesh; it was not plagerism; he accused her of that; but Tanzan distorted the facts and truth as seems per his custom of communication at Intent.

I thought this was settled months ago?

She began her statement with: "someone had once said" so, in that clarification alone; says she did not right the quote. hello, that is pretty clear of plagerizing?

Not sure how clearer this could be made; but, another attempt has just been made by me to do so, once again just for the sake of truth.

I was there when it happend Jignesh! so take care in continuing such a contentious falicy; b/c if I am not mistaken a lawyer came on to mention, that Tanzans accusations were unfounded, and teetered towards slander and defemation of character - in fact, he was found to be guilty of insighting these regards against her. If anything; he should have been hit with both!

The same could hold true of it's continuance, to gossip about it. I mean slander and defemation character laws are there for specific purpose, to protect innocent parties from undue harm, and above all; attempt of malice intent towards another...gossip is considered stringently upheld under these protective umbrellas of the law Jignesh! Hmmm I wonder, who you are? some here have so many alias's it's downright decieving.

thats a nice thought , anupam...defioned days of celebration help issues to come in the forefront of human consciousness...
and divya, tx for that link...

when i am breathing normally, it is good, but i dont tell anybody about it. why, because it is my natural state of being. but when i develop a problem in breathing, i tell the family members...beause we have to do something about it.

similarly, good is our natural state of being. it really makes no news. bad is an abrasion. so it needs telling, it makes news.

2. a bazaar is full of things. a child passing through will see toys, an old man, medicines...

harb

The problem is that there is always bad news to tell. If there was a "world good news day", the press would be forced to sideline or trivialise all the serious bad news that there would be to report on that day. All we can do to ever come closer to this dream of "world good news day" is to try to change society itself, and if we can ever accomplish that, the only bad news will be the kind that is out of human control.

Sir, Anupam Kher, Canadian favorite singer(whom stayed IN Canada!ahem) wrote a song Anupam Kher - called: Sure could use a little good news today...

IT was a big hit! Lovely song; recommend the search to hear it; it is quite like your story, and it rang a bell.

Yes, we sure could all use, a little good news!

It is very much about demand. As more people demand intelligence without bias and develop a disdain for emotional mind fluff they will turn to the internet and independent news, and real journalists with no master.

The ignorance propagation engines will shut down because there will be no one to watch them.

Check out http://www.cthings.com -- I think it's what you're looking for. It's officially launching on Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but given this thread, I think you all deserve a preview. Note that CThings is not "good news" -- it's the transformative, empowering news of the people, events, and stories that are literally changing our world for the better. Bookmark it -- it's a great new way to start off your day.

Paul Horne: I "C" what you mean--very cool- much thanks for that site!!! Dave

Anupam, Gotham and Mallika, and the Intentblog: Paul is most definitely correct--it's what "we" are looking for regarding "Good News"--posted a message to them myself about the Intentblog--hope you all will check this site out; it is fantastic! Dave

Divya thanks for the site, will certainly be spending more time there now on. Its a relief from our doom and gloom scenarios painted everyday.

Harb, very nice concept about the bazaar, very apt. I do feel though that people want to hear happy stories. Why do we pay to see happy movies and enjoy happy endings?

Just a good news page everyday would be wonderful. So often I find myself starting my day feeling a little morose.

Could it be that the media exploits our weakness for scam, gossip and scandal? After a while though it becomes morbid.

Desh,
Don't know about the HT but The Times of India on the other hand goes to another extreme. It just presumes that its readers have taken leave of their senses and are content to be fed hype about cricket and cricketers. There is just too much malicious writing spiced up with pure conjecture there about imagined rifts, policies and individuals for my liking. I have now more or less given up on it after more than 40 years.

OH, that is, her name is: Anne Murray, who wrote/wings a song: Sure Could Use a Little Good News Today!

Dear Harb,
Well said.

Dear Anupam,
Good to see you writing here.

Cheers!

Dear Anupam,

So nice to read your post. How wonderful it is to find that your true self is as goodhearted as anticipated.

I agree with you about the news. People can only take so much hyped-up negativity before they tune out from it, then, when real tragedy happens, they aren't able to respond as genuinely as they might, otherwise. All bad news all the time is like crying wolf, and it's definitely a media attitude thing. If all the world were as bad as the media project it to be, we wouldn't be able to have this discussion -- we'd be at each others' throats instead.

Here in NYC this has gotten to the point where even the morning TV weathermen become very clearly and obviously disappointed when a blizzard fails to happen, because they know that bad news would have drawn viewers and made their TV station more money.

It's one thing to report truly bad events honestly, it's another to focus on only bad news to the exclusion of other events, or to drive up the negativity quotient by twisting the tone of the news presentation.

Cheers, Heather

dara, navin

dara, it is true the things are not as simple as i have made out to be in my post. i too like good, moving news, but may be it is only a few people like us who like such news, for otherwise, if majority of them liked good news there is no reason newspapers would not publish good news. obviously they publish what sells. the best attitude is: find good news may be even in the back pages, enjoy them and as to the rest "it too shall pass."

yes, good is our natural state, but extra good should always be published...

hi navin, cheers! i wish with all my heart that this time you will definitely find accomodation in Bombay. and hiren orgoch will go on heading northwards lol.

a bazar is full of things.A child passing through will see toys.....
how much wisdom is there in this simple statement....

This intentblog is full of comments...I will read only a few selected ones....others I just skip....

Dear Harb,
Thanks for your blessings as always. I have almost finalised a place here in Bombay. It's the same complex where Rani Mukherjee lives. (wink)
Will be flying to New Delhi tommorow evening. And will be back in Bombay again in a week or so. This time with my truckload of furniture and stuff. As you advised, I am taking the big step.
Hope all of you Intenblog friends are well.

Cheers!

Hi Sir,

Kudos to you for really caring about the world.I genuinely am happy that there are some people who are at the least thinking the same.

I have my own blogs (about 10 in number) which discuss the same topic as you have said. But after one and a half years and some hundred entries i have almost stopped blogging. The only reason was that there was simply nobody to read what i wrote.

I was totally disillusioned that there was no care for any fellow people in this world and thank you for proving me i am wrong. People like you have reinfirmed the faith that care for fellowmen is still there in this world.

Its time i get back to blogging again

Having a Good News Day is definitely a great idea. Here is another great idea someone came up with - a web site called Good News India! http://www.goodnewsindia.com

Enjoy,
Naren

seema, navin,

seema, thank you. really so much seeing depends upon where we are 'sitting.'

navin, bravo and oh and ahh...rani mukerjee...i hope you will invite me to your apartments soon lol.

and seriously, bravo! i see tides turning in your favour soon. some wise man said: "he who sees through everything sees nothing..." the problem with people like you and me is that because they can do EVERYTHING they end up doing nothing. hope taking a clue you will stick to your heartfelt line now. though it is also true that the arrow which will take you to your final destination has already left the bow since long and what you are doing even now must in some way be preparation for that.

ananda anandam!

Nice thought! I had received an email from one of my friends on a similar note. Here is a website that claims it publishes only GOOD news:)

Dear Harb,
Life is a whirlwind of activity for me right now. Am shuffling between New Delhi and Bombay non-stop. Am currently in New Delhi and will travel to Bombay again tommorow or day after. Hope "God" is cooking something delicious for me.
Making lots of new friends. Met the manager of the Pakistani band "Jal" (water) few days back. They released their album "Aadat" (habit) recently and were doing some concerts here in India. The guy (Jumshaid) was from Lahore and we shared a little bit of nostalgia as my father and grandfather are also from Lahore. He reminded me of the famous saying, "jine Lahore nahi vekhya, o jamya hi nahi" (one who hasn't seen Lahore has not seen anything) LOL. My grandfather died when my father was four and a half years old, so haven't seen him. But used to hear tales of Lahore from my late grandmother. She used to proudly tell me that my grandfather was one of the biggest Iron merchants in Lahore and how they left many pots filled with gold and silver underneath their backyard when they had to flee Lahore during partition.
Wish I could go back to Lahore to dig up those pots of gold! LOL. As if they'd still be lying there. (wink)

Gotta go now, catch ya later

Cheers!

Mr. Anupam Kher: I have been saying a lot of the same thing and have actually thought about doing stories on Good things that are happening around the world.
That is how I came across your article by searching the websites. I have been told over and over again that my paper/news stories won't sell. I have to believe that there are people that don't want to just hear the bad. I am going to give it a shot, if you happen to see it that means I have accomplished my goals so please give a shout hello.
