Kavita Chhibber - February 27, 2006
But what is this thing called love?
Does it make the world go round,
Or make you mentally unsound
Is it in the smile of your child
Or keeps you up when your teenager’s running wild
Is it on your grand mother’s face, lighting up those wrinkles
Or when grandpa looks at her and his eye twinkles
Is it in that youthful first crush,
When you want all that mush
Starry eyed , twinkle toed and then again forlorn
What is this thing that often leaves you woebegone
Love is this and love is that
So let’s put on our thinking hat
Indeed what is this thing called love my friend
Why do you want to be at the receiving end?
P.S. Made this poem up 5 minutes ago,
You make your answers longer amigo(es!:)

The admirable love and kindness which so effortlessly flow from your hearts is an undeniable inspiration to many!
Priceless!

Love Is
Is when he can make you feel beautiful on one of her "ugly" days.
Is when she can get him to talk about sentimentals without feeling awkward about it.
Is dinner for two.
Is two toothbrush's in the cup holder.
Is two towels on the rack.
Is two pillows used, on the bed.
Is walks holding hands, and exploring nature through each others eyes and views and perceptions; never trying to change the others vision.
Is handling the bad days as partners, not enemies.
Is cookie for two, and sharing doing dishes.
Is taking time, to do what the other likes to do too.
Is similar priorities about life, work and love.
Is no expectations, only hopes.
Is sharing, caring and sympathy if one is suffering.
Is complimenting each others yin and yang.
North
PS I ran out of Is's but, I know there is much more out there...pile'm on!! : )
I love the # 34 because that was the ear tag of this little calf who used to follow me around all the time and bug me until I'd pet him and then he'd head butt me so I'd put my hand on his forhead and we'd have a pushing contest then he'd chase me across the feild trying to knock me over, then If it was cold and he had ice and snow on his back I'd knock it all off for him and go back to work. It wasn't easy loading my freind up on to the hamburger truck.
Hi Kavita and Ron,
Before anything I want to say thanks to Ron for writing your post. I did read the open thread just before coming to this one and noticed you wrote that early this morning--that was so sweet of you! How thoughtful! I agree with some of Meike's last words saying how she thouroughly enjoyed that thread--I did too! That is probably the most fun I've had on any one of them. You're family is lucky to have you in their lives--that's love!
As for me, my search continues--this is not to say I haven't found any love at all, it's just a neverending quest to find the "highest" love possible. Is there such a thing? Will the search ever end?
And I think it is very easy to say, "I love you" to someone, but in order to love, you have to like also. There has to be both, right?
Maybe I'm not sure. My brain is on overload these days and it's pretty clustered as I'm typing. I should have some better thoughts tomorrow!
How about just this.....
"That love is all there is,
Is all we know of love"
--Emily Dickinson
Love is who we are at our core of being. Our Spirit is made up of pure love. I believe that there is a part of our mind that knows only love and the notion of fear ceases to exist. When we focus on who we really are, then we are focusing on that part of our mind that is pure love. This is why I enjoy meditating so much - because it helps me remember who I really am - pure Spiritual energy of love waiting to manifest and express itself through my daily endeavors and relationships.
Love to the bloom on the rose
the sky filled with stars
our body and soul interlaced
with kisses till the world
forgets to dance around the sun
Love to all
True love, false love; divine love & self love...earlier this month, for Valentine's Day, I wrote an article called Valentine's Day and True Love on these on my site http://brendanmcphillips.com/valentines-day-and-true-love/
I also included one of the most beatiful love poems ever written and I talk about a new, hopefully somewhat enlightened, way to think of it.
I'd LOVE to know what you think.
Brendan
Love is what you think you had before you become lonely.
Being omnipotent was great, but there was one thing that was missing, besides your typical surprise.
It is really hard to describe it, but it requires another. So I became the many.
Thus I pretend I AM not who I really I AM so I can be more than I AM.
So I can Love myself.
I AM my creation.
I am you.
Where is KATE ???
who else can talk about love better than KATE...
KATE I will be leaving for India in two or three weeks....
Before that I would love to hear ur Voice....

The Dopamine effect?
I was chatting to a friend of mine last night (who is based in London), and she relayed her theory to me as to why men cannot sustain relationships beyond 9-12 months. Her theory was a follows: dopamine is a chemical which is released in the body and has the physiological effect on it that we commonly know as 'beng in love'. The butterflies in the stomach, the yearning, the wanting to be together, the missing of eachother, even if you are gone for 5 minutes. Its the difference we feel between like and love, that scientifically, is the result of this chemical release. However, the down side is that the dopamine effect only lasts between 9-12 months. Many of my friend's male friends, tried to justify why their relationships only lasted for this particular duration, by stating that the effect of the chemical wearing off was a return to like and not being in love anymore-ha,ha!!! I thought to myself, the next time I may get dumped by a guy, I may say-so 'its not me, is it?' 'It must be because the dopamine has worn off?' lol. However, like any drug or crutch this hit that we get from the release of dopamine into our bodies is addictive. Therefore, once europhoris of the hit wears off, you want it again and again.
Love is a very indivdual thing, and we cannot generalise about its definition-as it means different things to different peoople. For me, its that all knowing all consuming passion, which once you have had a taste of, you want more and become addicted. It also means you know the difference between like and love. Since the dawn of time, love has been written about, discussed, sung about, analysed both scientifically and emotionally. It can kill you, it can raise you to the highest heights, but despite the destruction it can cause in lives, we always go back for more..and why? Well I shall quote one of my favourite philosopher's
Voltaire:-
“Love is a canvas furnished by Nature and embroidered by imagination.”
nice quote indeed, Kamini!! thankyou!
North
Most welcome North. I'm a bit of a quotation freak!
kamini
Kamini: Very very interesting and "pertinent" post!
If you have a chance to see the movie, "What the Bleep Do We Know?!," you will see the "chemical addiction" of romantic love addressed in a truly incredible and revealing manner.
There is a saying: "Relationships 'usually' end as fast as they start!"
The epic modern-day psycho-spiritual masterpiece-of-the-human-condition known as "A Course in Miracles" addresses the inevitably hopeless cycle-of-breakdown in romantic relationships with a considerably uncanny accuracy.
This "teaching" also reveals that this inevitability does not have to be--but first we must distinguish that "romantic love" is only one area of the all-encompassing umbrella of unconditional love--or, "True Love!"
The latter contains within itself all aspects of the unlimited nature of what "Love" really is; and the infinite forms in which "It" is capable of expressing "Itself," particularly as it pertains to human beings; or rather, the unlimited nature of freedom that is the eventual "Destiny-of-Being" that is the birth-right of all humans--and I do not just mean from the birth which has produced this particular life-stream!
In other words, Kamini, there is not only hope for breaking the vicious cycle of our addictive ways; and nowhere is this more applicably true than with the unfathomable pain of our collective tragedies of our "love gone awry."
If we learn to let "Love" teach us what It is; and not the other way around (by virtue of the fact that we wish to impose our definitions of what "love is" by insisting we are certain we do know!)--and , well.....
.....let's just say that by "turning within," and facing and piercing the veil of that devasting inner-darkness that so shrouds the "awareness of love's presence," it's living energy is then allowed to "come out," and start showering on everthing and everyone--then do we truly have something to give, instead of trying so desperately to "get it" from another.
Easier "said than done" though, N'est Pas!!!
Thanks again for your many interesting and provacative posts--it is what makes the "energy of the Intentblog" so addictive--ie., It must be love that flows here then! Dave
I think the J. Geils Band summed it up pretty well . . .
Hi David,
You mean '.... is a centrefold? (J Geils band, can't remember the first word!?).
Is there a twelve step programme for love addiction? Lol, yes, yes, a novel idea...we can make money? I'm kidding.
Thank you for your comments. I don't think Ive had this much fun enagaging in conversation for ages.

To all of you who are aware of baby Filip, tomorrow is his 1st. birthday. Whoa! Mom is arranging a little birthday bash for him to be held on Sunday afternoon at home. A few more tykes around his age and older will be in attendance.
Dad.
I just finished reading all the posts and poems (Kavita, North, and Seascape, yours are especially sweet) and I am humbled. I don't know what to say.
I'll keep it simple: Love is my Life. I am more in love today than I have ever been, with one particular person who seems to be my absolute ideal. But I am also in love with all people (sounds crazy) and often I feel their feelings and want to help -- it must be all the yoga teaching I do.
Dear North,
At the risk of being told here that I am 'sucking up' as you say, and as you have been accused, I have to share that I learned most of what I believe today about love from Deepak's book "The Path to Love". I must have read it 4-5 times since it was published. I just resonate with the content of the book.
"I do not want to betray the intimacy of ecstasy; it is the most private of love affairs. Being becomes your beloved, and the MERGING of yourself with another person follows with complete ease and naturalness."
Deepak Chopra
Thank you every one for your lovely and thought provoking posts. I think no matter what the outcome, one thing is for sure..while there may not be something as everlasting love(though I have seen and experienced to the contrary) love while its lasts is wonderful, and also I guess as was said-it is better to have loved and lost than not loved at all. David, and Kamini very interesting posts. North, always poetic, Brendan I did look at your blog-thanks for taking me back to my undergrad days when the poem by Marlowe was one of the many we dissected and interpreted. The connection between romantic and divine love was always a key point in many sufi poems by Rumi and in the rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and the works of Kahlil Gibran.
On a practical note, I ve realised the more love you give, the more you receive-at least that is what I have experienced. I am slowly learning to live in the present moment and enjoy the loving gifts that moment brings and to surround my self each day if I can help it a loving interaction with friends and family-things change in a moment..
And of course being a crazy dog lover, I have to say the highest example of unconditional love has always been from my dogs..one of them saved my sister's life twice.
Andaleeb, your description of the love between you and your husband is heart warming..whenever there is mutual love and respect it can never go wrong..
seascape those were beautiful words, touched my heart and warmed my soul. soul trip that one line said a lot. Richard Thomas, Seema, Mieke, thank you. Matt thanks for those words of wisdom.
Tiffany I know its only a matter of time when you will find the love you seek.
love to all! thanks for posting
Hi Ron,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BABY PHILIP!!
A gathering with lots of babies... how sweet. Have a wonderful time.
Love,
Donatella
Thanks Donatella, for your kind words. North, just to transgress as I said earlier, the problem is never with you, its with others..we often reflect on others what we are ourselves-and blame others for our issues.
Dear Ron, many congratulations on Fillip's first birthday. This is the most special one of all!
nice thoughts, Donattela, thankyou!!
Birthday Blessings to baby Filip!
Thanks Kavita; clarity is everything.

How about...love is PLAYFUL! Having someone you can pick on, be mischievous with, put a fake spider on their pillow or a silly note in their lunch box...to just enjoy life, let your hair down, and not have to be a serious grown-up all the time!
And love is...giving and receiving back rubs!!! :)
Happy Birthday to baby Filip and congratulations to his mom, dad & big sis.
Cheers!

Sorry, Baby Filip for mispelling your name.
Have a blessed, enchanting birthday filled with love, stars, divine energy and... just as important, with your parents and friends.

Love is..
Early in the morning, I’m still in bed
She comes to me with sweet affection
Wakes me with kisses, hello sleepyhead.
Gets me moving in the right direction
I do my best to give her love that lasts forever
It seems like everythiung I do I’m doing better
Doing it all for my baby
Because she’s as fine as she can be
Doing it all for my baby
For everything she does for me
Later in the evening, it’s been a busy day
She lays her head upon my weary shoulder
Listen to her laughing, snuggle up and say
Now I’m with you baby, the loneliness is over
I do my best to give her love that lasts forever
It seems like everything I do I’m doing better
Doing it all for my baby
Because she’s as fine as she can be
Doing it all for my baby
For everything she does for me

--from the movie The Wedding Date
I have to share an interesting story- when I was a teenager, I used to correspond with a sportsman whose game I really liked. He would be travelling, so his father would write back to me..my dad was away in the hills and sensitive areas that were not accessible..letters took ages to reach, and this man became my surrogate dad, advising me, and writing the most beautiful letters. I finally met him four years later and he told my parents that he would be very honored if they would let me call him dad..he had 3 sons and no daughter. The love I received from a stranger is still one of the most precious gifts I have received and he would say I cant believe it after so many years I have a daughter. So there are connections that have nothing to do with worldly love..he was a christian and I a hindu and a stranger, and yet the love that grew in the letters we exchanged is a miracle I cherish to this day.
I met my best friend through the internet and we actually met in person after 2 years of having the most amazing friendship online!
Connections have no logic or reason at times..they just happen, just as love does and I for once cherish it all..time to head out for a meeting
Kavita,
If you have freinds in Delhi...can you spread the word for "Mirza Bagh" Yatrik's new play.Theatre artists are usually cash deprived...they depend upon the audience..
"Yatrik's new play "Mirza Bagh", directed by Sabina Mehta Jaitly and set to go on the boards from March 2 at New Delhi's Shri Ram Centre."
Kavita:
For me this verse from Gulzar has expressed it the best!!
"Sirf ehsaas hai yeh rooh se mehsoos karo pyar ko pyar hi rehne do koi naam na do"
Its only a feeling;
feel it with your soul.
Let love be just love;
lets not look to name it any.

"The lips of the one I love are my perpetual pleasure
The Lord be praised, for my heart's desire is attained...
They talk scandal about us, and say we are drunks-
The silly elders lost in their error.
Oh my dear, how can I speak of being apart from you?
The eyes know a hundred tears, and the soul has a hundred sighs."

Donatella: Beautiful verse!
here is a small poem that I wrote recently on love that I posted on my blog (http://www.drishtikone.com/?q=node/972)... hope you like it.
There is no rest.. I Am All!
----------------------------
Soft beauty of the far away rainbow..
arched over the blue mountain beyond.
A cloud of fog covered me then...
Why does my Love have to end in Pain?
She laughed and whispered "It wasn't love, just hate deflected!"
You mean I didnt love you?
The fluttering of my heart,
What were the loss of words, and the sparkling eyes?
She laughed and whispered "Room for me in your heart..
..was one from where you swept away the rest!".
Sure! But I Love YOU!
So, how can others be where YOU are?
She smiled and sighed "Oh my love...
Love for me made you hate the rest..
There is NO rest.. I am ALL!"

And this:
"Come live with me and be my Love,
And we will all the pleasures prove,
That hills and valleys, dales and fields,
Or woods or steepy mountain yields.
And we will sit upon the rocks,
And see the sheperds feed their flocks
By shallow rivers, to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.
And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies;
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle.."

Hi!
You and Desh have a gift for writing poetry. I really enjoy it, and hope you both continue to post the words, that can capture the facets of Love! oh, I will never tire of the many ways, one can write about friendship, romance, Love :)
Desh, you are so talented. Like many writers here, you have skill, intelligence, and - oh, a soft and tender heart!
Dear Ron,
also I too want to wish a fun and happy first birthday for Filip. I can imagine his wide eyes, and smiles tomorrow when he wakes up to the celebration from mom, dad and big sister. May he continue to grow, and explore and dream. And be open to all that Life can offer.
With love and Blessings,

It's amazing how love inspires so many people. Kavita,
touching story about your adoptive father. Thanks for sharing it:)
North,
So glad you love Marlowe. Keep posting your own poems. Same to Seascape, Ron and all the poets here.
Love to all,
Donatella
Donatella,
You are amazing. Really, I am enjoying your insights, and the depth of your knowledge, both 'worldly' and imo, deeply spiritual.
I just wish the awesome intent community could find a place 'big' enough, that we could all meet and just, like Mallika and her visit, just ... delight in each other's presence. Share stories, share smiles, share an embrace, and part with a blessing. And a promise to meet again! Oh, to dream....
There is a magical place I have heard of (oh, several actually :) .......
oh Mieke,
can you transport us all to Portugal?
of course,
the way Ron describes Hawaii ...
ah,

could you prepare for us?
could we manage the
freezing temp? :)
Seema,
I have a special gift for you. To take with you on your trip to India.
with love to you,

If I could describe Love,
If I could ...
There is a story told, of a special girl, a girl who knew who she really was.
This confused the town she lived in.
Where ever she walked, in any place she was, in quiet, or in speaking, with others, or by herself, there radiated a glow, a joy, a peace.
One day, a learned group wanted to 'trap' her, to reveal her lack of knowledge, her simple ways. One approached, and with outstretched hand, said "I will give you one orange, if you can tell me where God is".
And as she looked around her, with clear eyes, and a smile, she answered "I will give you two oranges, if you can tell me where God is not".
Incredible,
Brendan, I just saw your Web site and I found the same poem by Marlowe that I chose earlier. What a coincidence. I did not read your post until 5 minutes ago. Do you all believe in critical mass?? I definitely do.
Your site is great, Brendan. I'll have to go back now and read some more!
Peace,
Donatella
Kate - lovely story on the orange and little girl; that was so precious! next time I reach for an orange; it will come back to please me again! thankyou for this beauty.
Thanks Donatella & everyone.

Dear Kate,
Many of us here have been genuinely wondering about your recent reticence! As you must very well know by now, Kate, when one special member of this close-knit family goes AWOL, the rest of us will notice! Now, don't you forget that!
With special regards,
Ron.
P.S. Presently, there is a vicious blizzard churning outside my bedroom, with a brisk, cold north wind and laterally falling snow and harsh, bone-chilling temps. But, I will soon be snuggling under the comfort and warmth of that blanket as nightfall eerily descends on the landscape! Good night!
Ok, it only takes one nudge for me to share in a circle I feel comfy in: so here's one of my oldies, with inclusion of original grammatical error(blush.)
OH WINDING HEART(DDS - 1-11-1998)
Oh winding heart;
where does thou lead me,
on trails that twine
ever so endlessly?
From twilight to twilight;
I hold steadfast,
as my twittering soul dances,
at last!

Dear Kate,
Thanks! Coming from one of the nicest people here...
I loved the story of the little girl:) Were you that girl?
I also wish we could all meet. Maybe one day...

Kavita, you have a knack of writing the most loving blog and gathering all the love birds of the blog in one place competing with each other in cheesiness. I enjoyed every single word of the blog and all the comments. God bless you all.
Ron, I wish a very "HAPPY BIRTH DAY" to Filip. I wish fun times for the entire family. God bless.
Donatella, you and I chose the Marlowe poem because great minds think alike (heh). Thank you for the kind words about my website...I would love to know what you think after you read some more.

P.S. This Intentblog has some of the best comments/commentors of any blog I've read. It's so active and the comments are insightful, constructive, interesting and positive!
hi all, not only men and women chasing each other produce the human race but 'they' (as male and female principle) in fact make the whole universal game of life go on and on and on.
here is a related excerpt from my book (mosc is one or god or what you have):
[Quote]So, first we would begin the Universe from Mosc and then, finally, we would do away with Mosc and show how it turns out to be the beginningless and endless game of only Movc and Mopc, of the virtual world and the actual world, of the noumenal world and the phenomenal world, of the unmanifest world and the manifest world, of the male principle and the female principle, of the mind principle and the body principle, of the active principle and the passive principle, of the active principle and the reactive principle, of Chinese Yin and Yang.
In other words, how they split and unite, unite and annihilate, annihilate and explode, explode and split, split and unite and so on, giving us in the process the whole Universal game.[unqote]
at the ultimate level they unite and expode in a single star and give us the whole universal game once again. at our levels they unite and annihilate and explode to produce off spring...to begin a new game of life at our level.
an iota of truth...dare to understand...
harb.
Piare Harb :)
Yes, dare to understand.... and when those forces unite in ONE we all make a quantum jump towards our next circle in life. Seems we all did in this blog and a few other blogs that synchronistically prepared the way.
As you also write in your book, life is about learning our lessons, guess we all are aware deeply inside that love is the big Force that unites everything, let the golden age start :).
There are many beautiful places in the world, but i have come to know this cyberspace as one of the most beautiful, expressed in myriads of colours of loving energy, a real virtual Torreão, where we all can climb to a higher view, each at our own speed.
