What To Do When You're Hated

Deepak Chopra - February 20, 2006

Americans aren't used to being hated, and although we recognize with embarrassment the "ugly American" stereotype, we feel as if we should be loved and respected anyway. Yet here we are. The Muslim world is inflamed with hatred against us. It's a fact we must learn to deal with, yet so far one hears almost no discussion of what we should do psychologically. The prevailing obsession with homeland security sidesteps the issue by making it a military and police matter. Actually, being hated is more complex than that.

We have reacted to being hated by returning the feeling. No one is more unpopular in the U.S. today than the stereotyped Islamic male screaming anti-American slogans on the Arab street. But for our own sake we must assume a higher standard; in fact, the only way to be loved is to exhibit kindness and love to our potential enemies. This is what morality, religion, and psychology all teach.

It asks too much for us to love our enemies, but we could come much closer than we do.
1. We don't have to hate someone simply because they hate us. Officially we don't hate Arabs, but this is something of a sham. Given the present air of contempt, condescension, and arrogance with which we treat even the Iraqis were are supposed to be saving, we have to face those feelings and at the very least try to resist them.

2. The next step is to try and understand those who think they are our enemies. With understanding comes a real effort to respect them. We don't have to respect fanatics, of course, but there is a vast, moderate Arab world being neglected because we tacitly label everyone as a fanatic sympathizer.

3. We have to draw boundaries that cannot be crossed. In this way we ask for respect in return. Violence against Americans is one obvious boundary, but we need to recognize that anti-American demonstrations on the evening news are not the same as violence. Tolerance for Arab hostility in its peripheral forms is part of being a democratic society.

4. We need to realize that Arab society is entitled to its view of the world and history, no matter how much it deviates from our version. We don't have a patent on the truth. We have caused real injury in their world, just as we have caused real benefits.

5. We need to incorporate Arab-Americans into mainstream life. This involves, at the very least, giving them assurances of their civil liberties, right to a speedy trail, habeas corpus, and all the other rights that the Bush administration has callously removed. Arab-Americans rightfully feel targeted as a group, this targeting is both unjust and unfair. We need to accept their legitimate opposition to Al Qaeda and jihadism.

6. We need to raise Palestinian autonomy to a higher priority, equal to the priority we give Israel. Because of the right-wing domination in Israeli politics, Sharon's deliberate incitement of the second Intifada, and religious zealotry in that country equal to the Islamic zealotry on the other side, it's no longer tenable to hold Israeli interests as the only ones worth valuing. We need to show tolerance for the anti-Israeli rhetoric that dominates Arab politics and not use it as an excuse to exclude Arabs from a realistic solution to the Palestinian question. By making Israel always right and the Palestinians always wrong, we have inflamed the hatred directed at us.

I realize that this last point will arouse anger among many pro-Israel readers, but what other course is there? Being hated isn't helping Israel, as they aren't helping themselves by their unilateral policies toward the Palestinian land they occupy by military force. We have to stop using Arab hated as our main excuse for mistreating them in return. Israel has already gone down that long, tragic road. The world won't abandon anti-Americanism until we find a new path.

Love,
Deepak

You pretend to be Canadian! Just kidding! All your points make a lot of sense!

Dear Deepak....Of late the world is going a little more crazier, am sure it cudn't miss your eyes. I wish I cud write with my usual energy, but still just a little vulnerable, will surely be here responding to you in a couple of days perhaps.

I'll always put my money on the earlier theories of young Dear Deepak and not on the present ones. Sorry Sir...just my take on that. High standards work for a thin section of human population and never for the majority. Someone who already has a conscience of peace is hardly going to benefit from a talk of peace, he/she can only appreciate how beautiful is it and how nice it wud be if it wud be real on a mass scale...and to those who do not a have conscience of peace will never listen, it will just go on deaf ears(bush&co). Patch work, superficial rhetoric talk will never work....the only real sure way of getting to it is...It's got to come from deep inside, thru' one's conscience(level of awareness has to go higher).

Well, as said earlier I resonate very much to this theory(of course having learnt from you only to consolidate with my own observations). I hope to be here with you Dear Deepak to talk and share the unfolding of the world events in the coming yrs.

Peace&Love..Sachin

Aloha Deepak

It is always to draw a circle around those who exclude you. Peace is an inside job. Loving an enemy is like turning on a light, the darkness leaves as we have less of an enemy. Martin Luther King Jr. knew this and it is a universal practice of application. America is just a portal to the New World within. Everyone has a New World within. love patty

Change from within is what is needed right now.
American citizens for a long time have been ignorant about what's been happening in the world.
While 9/11 has certainly created a change in that aspect, we find it hard to accustom ourselves to the hatred. Of course, the immediate response is defensive in nature. Coz hatred is a 'new' feeling/emotion and we naturally tend to defend ourselves...coz deep down everyone wants to be loved.
While the administration is certainly not reflective of the people right now, we, the people are to blame for the choices we have made...in re-electing the war-inclined administration.
Now suddenly we also realize the mistake but feel helpless to make the change.
While suddenly trying to change the hatred to love is not easy, we still have to make an effort. Peaceful intentions alone are not enough, Action must be taken, now.

Dear Deepak,

It is fascinating to see you working on raising consciousness in the world of international relationships. You have the same dedication, patience and skill I imagine you had as a doctor while treating individuals. And just like the healing of an individual is strongly connected to education, the healing of this planet, I feel, is a matter of education. Human beings are intelligent, and if we combine that intelligence with understanding, no conflicts can last.

I am grateful for your healthy perspective and I know that your efforts are not in vain. There must be many people like me who are inspired and strengthened by your clarity.

Dear Deepak,

What you say reminds me a little of the martial art of Aikido. Aikido is an art with a feminine energy to it; it states that conflict is part of life, so we accept it. Rather than resisting the violence or hatred, we welcome it and allow it pass over and through us. We are non-resistant like water.

What is most difficult is the very human reaction to being pushed. It is our first instinct to push back. The Aikidoka would flow with the push, be totally non-resistent and therefore undefeatable because there is nothing there to defeat.

Aggression by its very nature can only exist with something that is unyielding. Yield and aggression and hatred of any kind can find no hold, no target and by their very nature cannot exist.

Peace,
Scott.

Dear Deepak

Thank you for number 4, especially. If that can be accomplished, the others are possible.

Cheers, Heather

Dear Deepak,
Is it really too much to ask to love those that hate us? I'm not so sure.

I think a lot of peole believe it's too much to ask. But believing it is too much or not possible comes from misconceptions about what love is. As you said we can strive to truly understand, we can respect and we set clear boundaries at the same time. Of course some people are so far into their hatred that they will never change. But that does not mean that the majority of us can not change. Why should we allow ourselves to be destroyed by hatred just because another does?

I met a man who was in a terrible car accident and in a coma for a few months. During the coma he met Jesus and was given the choice to come with him to a place of incredible light and peace or come back here with the rest of us human beings. Instead of answering Jesus directly he said to him, "I want to be just like you." Well then BOOM (my interpretation of how I would feel) he was sent back here. Kind of a shock, don't you think?? Especially since he had to learn to walk (and does so with difficulty) and many other things all over again - and after a time his wife left him... etc.
Still, I thought it was beautiful that he chose to come back and he said - why would I have chosen to come back here? He doesn't see that he chose to come back yet. But I think he did.

I think we all did. We all came here to learn to be like Jesus.
Or Krisha. Or whatever god-like image we hold dear.

So why can't we love those who hate us?

I think we can.

Love, Kristin

Marvel, W., Marvel.

Don't know if this relates but I like this saying...

"The perfect man/person is the mirror of Truth, he/she reflects good with good and evil with evil..."

Do we have any historical examples of nations that were hated and found a productive way to deal with the situation? As I recall, the Arabic and North African Muslims who conquered Spain after 711 taxed Catholics and Jews heavily, but never asked them to renounce their faith or cover their women-folk in an exaggerated manner. The Muslim ruling class espoused good old fashioned Muslim values, as Americans espouse our own, yet somehow others' religions were respected to a surprising degree. If Turkey becomes part of the European Union (inshallah) we may see a level of Christian/Muslim dialogue long absent from the almanacs. Dig these cool skyscrapers in Istanbul:

US - talks about God and Jesus
Arab - I'm sure the teaching of forgiveness is in there somewhere...

Whether or not this is about religion or imposing control over one another it is definately evident that they are all hipocrats. And what about civilians who are cheering on the streets blindly supporting each action the leader takes. Sure Americans are aware such like us but who is telling them? Do they get it?

It's like King Kong and Godzilla, who was the good guy I don't know. They both caused damage, crisis, violence and fear. They were both monsters. Anyways King Kong is obviously the US in this comparison.

Look at the Karma of the country. I think to some extent women are treated way better in America compared to those countries which America is fighting with and for that reason, the US may succeed. Women don't have total freedom here but it is way better than the Arab world.

People cite Israel's numerous 'miraculous' victories in several wars in the past decades, and that is just the point: it is pretty amazing that little old Israel could defeat the entire Middle East, on several differing occasions. We can look at this in two different ways, on the one hand, perhaps these were incredible victories, much like the overwhelming victories in which even the Canaanite women and children were slaughtered, or, on the other hand, those American aircraft carriers, and the war-planes thereupon, certainly did not hurt the Israelites wars on those accursed Canaanites.

It is kind of like when ‘our’ government tries to sell the idea that we are so worried about those poor Somalians’ health and welfare, please, if anybody cares to look at a map, why Somalia is so important to us is easy to understand. Same goes with the Balkans, our primary objective was, and is, to destabilize Russian influence, and promote American hegemony, in that region as well.
Comparing Hussein to Hitler is like comparing George Bush to Jesus Christ, there is no comparison. If one looks at the reign of Hussein as compared to American wars, covert and overt, during the same time frame, one will find that in Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos alone, in Asia alone, ‘we’ the American government, has killed a hundred times as many people as Saddam ever dreamed of killing!

Additionally, that people can compare any others, except their own, to Hitler, smacks of double standard hypocrisy.

‘We’ Americans claim to be so ‘high-minded,’ and yet, the first thing ‘our’ leaders do is request more money for weapons programs; Augustinian Aristotelianism at it’s finest, a saint even more corrupt than a lowly figure such as I, it figures he is so prominently cited when discussing jus bellum doctrines . . .

Thank God the Republic of Congo has not the money to professionally train their Olympic athletes, because you know, if they were given a fair opportunity, our best hockey teams would all be African, but, since it is a ‘white-boy’ affair, we do notice it is the northern whites and blond(e) Russians who are kicking butt (har har har har). Also, the fact the middle-class white-boys get paid to ski and play shuffleboard while wars for oil are being fought is indicative of the corrupt values of us enlightened western nations. Kind of like having an alcoholic cokehead for president whose family had/has the money to buy out criminal convictions . . .

The United Arab Emirates security is provided by mercenary American forces so please . . .

peace

Dear Deepak
There were three wars since 1948 with the purpose of destroying Israel. Now Hamas is in power and will not recognize Israel. Please!

Dearest Dr. Chopra:

I wanted to state that I enjoy reading your books and reading your articles. Your Spiritual views are needed in the world of today. Thank you.

I think as an American I recognize that we all have an identity crisis. Who are we? I think that is a question for individuals to define for themselves.

Our business communities would define us as consumers, our religious communities would define us as worshippers, our political communities would define us as conservatives or liberals. One could be a student, a parent, a single parent without a partner, a protestor, a soldier ect. All these limited definitions could go on to ad infinitum.

The point is, though, that human beings are not one-dimensional. We are not just one thing. I think as we mature as a species into a more universally connected community of consciousness we will come to accept our greater humanness that is shared.

When we know how to define ourselves, then we do not reflect back someone else's anger or hatred. It is important to own your own identity. Do not rush to reflect your environment, but project your environment. We are all learning lessons on how to own our identities so we will not respond to hatred with reflected hate.

Hatred is everywhere in this world today. It is on TV, it is at the workplace, it is on the freeways, it is at the malls. We do not have to take the hatred identity on. We don't have to because we are the grown-ups. We can know this.

Thank you for this opportunity to share. This is what I think

katie/AZ

Hope I don't offend or cause more hatred with this piece from Jackie Mason, but I think some satire is needed from time to time:

Muslim fundamentalists have decided that even if you never saw or heard of
the cartoons, you deserve to be hit with rocks, have your car wrecked and
your embassies destroyed.

Ironically, the cartoonists were not insulting Islam; they were satirizing
fanaticism. Now the fanatics have decided that there are no laws, limits or
boundaries that apply to their behavior. They not only have the right to
take your life; they now have the right to rob you of your freedom of
_expression.

Could you picture a Jew killing anybody for such meaningless reasons? If a
Jew gets mad he might sneak into your house and steal your Lipitor or he
would make a deal with your doctor to lie about your cholesterol number, or
just when you have fasted a whole day on Yom Kippur he would sneak into your
house and steal all the pastrami sandwiches.

I never saw a Jew going into meaningless fights. That is why you seldom see
Jewish football players. A Jew is not going to take a chance in spraining
his neck or tearing a ligament in his knee just because he was fighting with
somebody about catching a ball. He would rather go to a store and buy
another ball and avoid the whole problem. That is why there are also no
Jewish hockey players. Hockey players spend all their time hitting each
other in the mouth with sticks. When Jews saw how Gentiles played hockey,
that is how Jews found out that instead of becoming hockey players they
would become dentists, and that way they decided to let other people play
the game while they found a way to make a profit from it.

Jews are never known to get into unnecessary physical battles. That is why
people are never afraid of being attacked by a Jew. Did you ever hear
anybody say, 'Don't go into that neighborhood, it is very dangerous, there
are a lot of Jews there'? Jews have so long been accustomed to being
threatened and persecuted all over the world that they could never dream of
creating needless violence anywhere, because they would be grateful to find
a place where they are allowed to live in peace.

Meanwhile, the world is reacting with an amazing cowardice. Instead of a
collective fury, we are pleading forgiveness and promising not to offend
them with any more cartoons. Could anything be more perverted?

Dear Ambasteve
A fine post. While Israelis are pummeled by suicide bombers and reacting appropriately with force, Jews in general avoid physical conflict. This is seldom noted (exception Jackie Mason) Jews are often laughed at (mostly in a positive way) about being doctors and dentists. The last time I looked, anyone could enroll in med school if they wished. That wasn't always the case for Jews.

Some of these dumb fanatics want to have it both ways (have their cake and eat it too).

Don't these fools know how to better uililize the precious commodity called time? What a pity!

The conduct of some Islamist fanatics (as the suicide bombers) would lead many to conclude that Islam is the worst religion man has invented.

Q: What religion do most suicide bombers practise?

A:... that's right?

Great post Deepak.

Thank God for your voice of reason and common sense.

I am seeking a Canadian-based malpractice lawyer; willing to take a pause for the "cause" of justice, and the right to have closure, and twisted truths revealed; to feel secure in medical treatments post healing OF the mal-used practice; to have inept doctors and surgeons, taken into scrutiny!

Doctors are killing people out here... does anyone care, to realize this; or can something like this, only be realized, when it happens "to you"?

Yes, I resonate with what it is like to be hated; for someone to show me their anger/envy/jealousy masks..

starting with my first breath of life into extreme impoverishment;

and I am not whining about it, all you North-critics here at Intent(gentle smiles.)

it's a mature factual statement, and I won't repeat unwanted facts per se(smiles)just for critic-benefit!(I am that big, in my shoes.)

So, what do I do? Stop liking people, because someone else hates me doing so, as is evident here at Intent?

So, what do I do? Stop living because someone commands I disperse from the crowd?

So, what do I do? Stop making contact with people, because some people are opposed?

geeeeez.

let's stop hate/jealousy/envy/ego's,,

and respect each others space and free-reign to exist(or not to exist, that is the Question!)

and assume friendships or not; with whom "they choose/or not"!!

To see countries make friendships and make enemies of others, be-fogs me; same goes for the treatment I recieve here from some; and Damnit! I'm going to say it... leave me and Kavita alone; this is going beyond pathetic, in avoiding her wonderful blogs; merely because she and I struck up a professional/personal friendship way the fuck back in September!!

I am fed up! Kavita is more young and patient than I am...so grow up people..if we cannot respect each other; how can we attempt to heal nations, if we cannot heal our own egos realms?

I don't kiss butt, and I'm sick of being accused of this!!

I work for the respect I recieve!

I don't deserve this disrespect, and neither does Kavita!!

Let us all live, and let live,,,

please? Don't ignore Kavitas well-researched blogs, because of me... we don't deserve to become victims of hate here at IntentBlog..and I won't stand by much longer, giving patience to it!(lionic grin)

North

Dear Deepak, sorry for killing this blog! but, being I am feeling hated somewhat..and it's via Intent here; I thought it appropriate to talk openly about it;

rather than continue to live in the shadows of others egos and nontolerance and/or expectations?;

which seems to be running concurrent with global events..

makes one almost feel victimized by the projections of hatred felt BY others, holding it within themselves and project it onto someone here in conversation..they "chose" to learn to hate?

Nope, not feeling sorry for me per se,,just feeling sorry for those; with lack of tolerance, compassion and understanding without hatred, jealousy and envy; becoming the more prominent force for them..

I am not you or anyone else; and struggle with something here at Intent, to which I am perhaps not able to understand completely on such a large scale?

OK< I talk about my life/my Self; who isn't?; but, they are usually within relevancy to the blog I post on..so the misunderstandings for me, just does not compute with me? lol

IT would seem, I am prefered to be seen and not heard?

So, what/where/why does hatred exist within some people, and not others? How do I handle this discontentment, without subjecting myself to isolations?

I know I am not the most welcoming Spirit here; but, certainly; I give no cause to be so "hated."

So, what do I do, when I am hated?

North

Dear Deepak; please do me this one favour, and delete my last three posts on this blog?

My guts are not pretty to behold, are they?

Damn! I've become one of them! (gentle smiles)

sigggggghH .. another "thing" to fix in my pot of soup.

North

Most of the points you raised make a lot of sense except the one about Israel's aggression, which I think carries the ideological strength of wet paper.

Israel and its inhabitants have never spewed hate like the loopy, abhorrent fanatics of Islam. Their stance has often been reactive, that too in the face of extreme, unstoppable hate. How bad is that, compared to the deranged, ill-taught pupils of a book? When have they threatened the movement of life in a culture just because they don't agree to its ways?

Equating Israel's position with militant Islamic posturing is giving uncalled respect to a sick mindset. And that, in my opinion, is just not on.

Dear Deepak,
All great points. Thank you.
Love,
Donatella
