A great quote to mark the beginning of the world's most famous prom night:
The Oscars hardly have a liberal back story. The academy was founded by Louis B. Mayer, the legendary head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, for crass business reasons.'I found that the best way to to handle moviemakers was to hang medals all over them....If I got them cups and awards, they'd kill themselves to produce what I wanted.'

I have to agree with you -- the Oscars this year were a total bore! The only bolt of energy came when 3 six mafia accepted their award! And, Stewart had a few funny lines... but thats about it...

I would also add, by the way, that I thought the best movie of the lot was Munich, which did not get its due. This year, I thought Syriana, The Constant Gardener and Munich were all amazing.
I also find it strange the Reese Witherspoon wins Best Actress, but Joaquin Phoenix, who was so amazing as Johny Cash, doesnt get the nod. It makes it seem like she was better than him in the film, which was not the case in my opinion...
I did not see Capote, but Phillip Seymour Hoffman, I believe, is one of the most talented actors around so I dont begrudge him the Oscar.
Anyways, the whole thing is a bit off... Not to say that I didnt still watch the whole show!
I was happy only because George Clooney won-had been rooting for him- and his speech was one of the best of the evening-Stewart had some good moments-the rest was a damp squib
Mallika: Have not seen "Munich" yet, but in light of your taste for the others you mentioned, I highly recommend that you give "Lord of War," a look-see!
It is based on "actual events," and Nicholas Cage gives a uniquely remarkable portrayal of his character's role as an international arms deal; it is as "highly educational" as it is an "artistic accounting" of the economic and political realities of war.
Hope you get a chance to take the time for it!--Dave
Hello Sandeep and Everyone,
The Oscars! I agree BORING. Jon Stewart touched my funny bone, maybe, two or three times, tops. I am a big fan of his, but last night was not a hit for me.
Munich is a very good movie, but Crash was excellent and I think it deserved the Oscar. I thought it was original, gripping, interesting from beginning to end. Loved it!
The only real problem I had was the choice of supporting actress, I saw the Constant Gardner and I didn't think her role was at all demanding from an acting perspective. The other actresses seemed to have more substantial roles.
Anyway, it was one of the most boring Oscar nights to date. I did watch it all, while reading a book and checking other stations throughout. Good nite and Good Luck.
Hello,
Sorry, for the above repeats. Do not know what happened, when I pressed post the first time nothing happened, so I went to preview and pressed post from there and it worked..2 extra times!ruth
Munich was my favorite film too this year. I guess the Academy simply does not have the guts to recognize political films. It was thrilling, had depth, plus it was topical. And Crash? Can you imagine that totally lame movie winning! I mean it was okay and fun to watch but so in your face with the racist angle and generally simplistic in every way. This is it. I've lost all respect for Hollywood's biggest night. Btw, did Jon Stewart seem a bit nervous? Anyway, I love him way too much to find anything wrong with him.
p.s. - best actor category was a toughie this year as PSH was very good. He got Capote down to a T. Also, none of the women looked stunning. And what was Naomi wearing? Even Charlize looked ugly in that stupid bow.

I thought Michelle Williams looked amazing in that yellow dress. And, Kiera Knightly looked elegant as well. I agree -- that bow was a bit strange on Charlize. Normally she dresses so well.
Actually, the other few minutes which were great, I thought, was the Lily Tomlin/Meryl Streep dialogue. After watching it, we were discussing how they are great actors. Can you see someone like Jessica Alba - who is gorgeous - doing something like that?

We are a war that is why I feel the Academy Awards was low key. I am not surprised Crash won I think the film reflects the complex emotions that everyone feels. Just my thoughts, love patty
Yes, the Merly/Lily skit was cool. Keira is so beautiful but the last couple of times I've seen her she's been over madeup or something.
patty - I thought Crash over-simplified complex emotions. I liked the film right up until the minute they gave it the Oscar. What a shame.
Aloha Divya
I am sure that wining the Oscar can change someone’s perspective of Crash. I was amazed they won:) I didn’t catch the whole Oscar show. I loved when Robert Altman shared he had a full heart transplant ten years prior. I had a spiritual teacher share maybe in Africa it is the stones or China it is the sticks but in this country it is movies that take you to that next place. The reason I saw Crash was because my son recommended it. I feel like it is a wonderful film to open up simplified complex thoughts on what we really want to say. We all want happiness and contentment. We are developing the skill to be kind by untangling the tangled hierarchy. And I want to say Mahalo for your Presence Divya and for the exchange of views. Love patty
Writing as someone who has held an Oscar (albeit for a few brief moments)- I can say that it was an experience that I will treasure, even knowing it's history & meaning (which is not actually very much, but then what award actually means anything ?)_ I could be blase about it but, heck, I worked on a film which won an Oscar and I don't care who knows about it....& it was damn good film which I am proud to have been associated with...
...having said all that, it brought me no more work and was actually rather like having an albatross round my neck (by association) - the fact that it came as a 100% surprise made it even more meaningful, unlike films which are almost designed to win an Oscar....

The Oscars- what a bore! Except for a couple of funny Stewart bits, it was essentially three hours that I will never get back. Self congratulating monkeys.
And while we're on the topic, when did storytelling for the masses become so honorable. The top 5 movies were so uninspired that I cant even remember what they were. Feels disconnected- Stewart was right on that one. I'm more inspired by Extreme Home Makeover these days. Lights out.
