The Lord of the Stage
I had the pleasure of attending the Lord of The Rings premiere this weekend in Toronto and it was truly an amazing experience. Though your average theatre critic may be dismayed by the extreme special effects and the visual onslaught of pyrotechnics, do not be mislead, this production is larger then life for a reason.
Toronto was chosen as the host for this production for several reasons and the city hopes to live up to the expectations. The show has been cast with actors from around the world and the team pulls off a gripping performance that flows wonderfully.
The production value is meticulous and I think it is safe to say that the world has never seen a production that combines the charm of theatre with the bang of a rock concert.
Though it is not billed as a musical, the music stands out as another highlight. I had a great opportunity to chat with AR Rahman the day of the premiere and he spoke very highly about his experience scoring the production and working with artists from around the world. Rahmans touch can be heard through out the play from the intense scenes to the melodic numbers. BTW, anyone catch Rahmans song at the opening of Spike Lees new movie?
I urge those interested in coming to Toronto to take the time to see this play as it was an experience that I cherished and enjoyed from start to finish. Oh and its over 3 hours long, perfect for any Indian movie fan.

Why does anyone think that the masterpiece should be a theatre show? it is meant to be a book not a movie or production.
Though your review is positive, other reviews from abroad have pulled down the show. But being an admirer of Rahman's music, i hope he has done good job...and i wish the audio gets released in India.
interesting. i just saw spike lee's "inside man" over the weekend. the opening and closing credits use a.r. rahman's "chaiya chaiya" on the soundtrack. why? i have no idea.
i did start to giggle as i imagined denzel and jodi dancing to it though.
Mohit - when will your review on this play air on Omni Tv?
Dear Mohit
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'm a really really big-time fan of Rahman. I didn't know Lee's Inside Man had Rahman song; I'd postponed seeing the film despite its having three of my favorite actors, and a favorite director. Rahman's song will make me change my schedule. I hope the play will continue through this summer, perhaps I can make it up to Toronto then.
love, Heather
Dear Mohit
I just read karmabean's post -- that the song in Inside Man is Chaiyya Chaiyya -- this explains why one of my web sites' logs shows so many hits from searches for Chaiyya Chaiyya since Friday -- evidence, if any is needed, how fantastic Rahman's work is.
I saw Inside Man and love Rahman. I am coming to see the play in lord of the rings in toronto in July. I'd love to meet you mohit.
Hi Mohit,
Thanks for the review, I had this in mind for future viewing. It so happens, this weekend, my sister and I went to see "Inside Man" and WOW! what a beautiful surprise at the beginning and end of the movie. Blew me away! Who would expect to hear an Indian song in a movie with Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster? I love it when we cross bridges, mix and mingle! Good to know we are diving into the ocean. AR Rahman...great stuff, I wanted to get up and dance in the theatre, out of sheer JOY!!!
Looking forward to seeing The Lord of the Rings here in T.O.
Cinda:)
I saw previews of this play on TV; and it looks absolutely fantastic!!
I love the theatre, and have great respect for live-theatre actors!!
Anxious to see this one day; and also Oprah Winfrey's "Colour Purple" is now a stage-play!!
two great features to look forward to, in future!

Rahman is a musical genius and composers like him are rare.
Cheers!

Dear JD,
My friend, if you've not heard any of A R Rahman's music, then you've sure missed out on a lot. He is neither a Pakistani nor Iraqi, but is an Indian. I'm sure his music would be available in whichever country you live in....just go out and try some.
Cheers!
Navin
Dear JD
You can find lots of Rahman's music for online listening (using RealPlayer) at Raaga.com. Look in the Hindi or Tamil sections' Music Directors, and you'll see him with his named spelled as it's pronounced: AR Rehman. Many of his film scores are there. Look in his Hindi films for Dil Se -- the song used in Inside Man is Chaiyya Chaiyya, from Dil Se.
He's from Chennai (it used to be called Madras), Tamil Nadu -- the southeast of India.
love, Heather
The main thing about the Lord is SCENERY beautiful nature and people/ In theatre it's very hard to have the effectst.
Hi Mohit ,
I would like to write to AR Rehman as to how the
makers of the movie RDB spoilt the duet that AR sang with
Lataji. The song is Lukka Chuppi. Many bloggers had
appreciated the song prior to its release. However the director did not even use the complete song in the movie and what could have been transformed into a gem in the movie was spoilt. When Lataji went all the way to Chennai she was so excited as after many years she was singing the song for Waheeda Rehman. And she was thrilled that it was her first duet with AR Rehman. What a shame. The treatment given to the song in the movie was pathetic.
And I would like to mention this to AR that next time get it in writing as to exactly how his composition is used within the finished movie.
If AR Rehman can be reached here in Toronto I just need an address so I can write this same comments and mail it to him while he is still here. Or if I can have an email or an address for his studio in Chennai.
Thank You
