Elections 2008

Gotham Chopra - May 29, 2006

This shit could be really fun. I mean this could be the most star-studded American Idol style election in, well, ever! Think about it! Check out this line-up. Hillary Clinton: that's happening. John Kerry: Dude should know better but he totally doesn't. Al Gore: I got no inside info but big Al is more envogue these days than Vince Vaughn.

More: Barak Obama - probably more a 2012/2016 guy but a trial run to get the ball rolling? And then the reds: McCain: still lots of Vietnam war stories to milk. Condi: Single black republican woman - that's totally hot. Jeb: Bush dynasty lives. Guliani: for some reason people love this guy though I cannot stand him. Bloomberg: Billionares make presidential runs fun. Mitt Romney: this super white (mormon) guy is the ultimate dark horse. Conservatives from liberal states (he's the Gov. from Massachusetts) can make interesting runs plus I went to highschool with his son - hey Josh :)

So seriously - how much fun could this all be? I mean subplots galore: Clinton vs. Gore equals awesome. Kerry vs. McCain equals whose war stories are more bloodier. Hillary vs. Condi: that's got limitless potential. Screw it: Hillary Clinton vs. anyone would be totally awesome. Bloomberg vs. Guliani: endless September 11th footage and paranoia. And don't forget Romney: that means great mormon jokes about how many wives he has and all the strange shit they do: sorry Josh :(

Poor Jeb. He married a mexican and all that but being related to his crazy brother looks like it may actually end up hurting.

There is so much potential here. Think about: Bill Clinton as first man. That's gonna really improve his social life if you know what I mean.

Gotham beautiful blog. I like Al Gore the best, and I will vote for him!!! If you help him you can count on me to help!!!! BTW Sylvia Brown( Famous psychic) has predicted Al Gore will be the next president. I will keep my fingers crossed. Hillary can be vice president!

God bless you.

Yeah, and maybe even a 3rd party candidate could jump in like '92, although I don't know who that would be. Back in 02 Gore was speaking about how disasterous an Iraqi invasion would be. Even the New Republic called him nuts. Now look who was right! I hope he runs, although he has said he wouldn't, or something like "no plans to" oh which means in Washington talk "hell yeah!"

Gotham: Thank you for putting it all (the numerous candidates) in perspective. I needed this. This post is a great beginning to 2008 election watching, observing, studying, and eventually voting.

Dear Gotham

All I can say is ROFL. I like Gore with Hillary as VP, btw.

Dear Geeta

From your lips, and Sylvia Browns', to God's ears! Let it be! That would so k-a, and get things back on track! (Not to mention, appropos of Deepak's juice vendor's complaint, it would tell the rest of the world that there still are some decent people living here in the USA, that have the guts to finally give their complete support to the man who actually was elected in 2000.)

love, Heather

Gotham and Voters,

...Let us not forget, we must also take back control

of the House and Senate.

...Biden was on Bill Mahr's show. Anybody else see it?

...He was very articulate about his vision for the

future. Look for him as Vice for Gore.

...Gore has been re-born several times already,

he may not pull it off...cried "Wolf" too many times!

...Thanks, Gotham. We need to keep up this conversion conversation!

...Have a great day, all! Peace, Keith

The Clintons are war criminals. Recall that during the reign of the Clintons an embargo on Iraq led to the estimated deaths of 500000 children. When asked about this genocide, Madeline Albright replied that "It was worth it".
These are the people that you are writing about? Most people may not recall this, but it was Clinton who was dropping cluster bombs on innocent civilians in Iraq long before Bush.

And Hillary cannot contain her glee when talking about the wall that is and continues to be an instrument of apartheid in Israel. The israelis are eliminating an entire people in Palestine with the help of toadies like Hillary, and you continue to joke about the TV coverage that you will be watching. You should be writing letters to your Congressman, you should be feeling outrage, you should be throwing up every night for living in a country that justifies wanton genocide with the help of politicians like the ones that you mention.

sal

Hey sal, you make a lot of sense. Hillary and Gore and all these glitzy liberals may be fun to watch but I don't see no difference watching W House from the angle above everyone's head, it all looks the same. I'm all for guy with the Mexican wife but Al should get the greatest make over achievement award of the century, he deserve that.

But if Americans are really looking for balanced revolutuion then they ought to wait for Obama and Condi, they look like a great diverse pair in the house, but I'd still think the guy with the Mexican wife should help continue the empire.

hi noname,

The problem with condi is this: her greatest wish in life (as you may or may not know) was to get the job of the NFL commissioner. Now ask yourself why she wants that job. She either loves the violent nature of the game and the men who play it, or she loves the strategy behind the game. If she is looking for a game which involves strategy, she could take up chess. So it is probably not the strategy behind the game that she is after. I think that she likes the 320 lbs offensive linemen. I think she wants to spend a lot of time with them. Do you think that someone whose mind is focused on these overweight athletes (if you can call them that) would make a good vice president or a president?

I'd vote for Obama, Condi or Al Gore. Only three serious respectable candidates I see there in the list. Of course I think Obama still needs to prove himself in the senate, just giving excellent speeches ain't gonna cut it. But he has a lot of potential.

By the way it's interesting that people are already talking about 08 since we are only into the second year of the Bush term. It's going to be an interesting race.

Hilarious entry by the way...

Al Gore and Obama sound great to me.

I would passionately campaign for Al.

Heather, USA gives more in charity than any other country. There are millions of really good people here. A lot of us are stupid enough to vote for a republican, some of us are too busy with our spirituality to get involved in politics, some of us are lazy and not motivated, some of us can not see beyond the tip of our noses, some of us are so gullible, we believe the lies we are told by the republicans. We are good but not smart enough. My 2c worth. God bless you.

Geeta,

Remember that quote from Burke:

"All That Is Necessary For Evil To Triumph Is For Good Men To Do Nothing."

I am sure that there are millions of good men in the States. But remember the quote from Burke.

Hi Geeta, I give you that some of us believe the lies we are told by the republicans, but give them some benefit of a doubt for not being stupid. These voting republicans or moderates are not stupid, they were just being lied to masterfully. It happens when people are either immersed in materialism or they are at the opposite end of it, as you said, busy with spirituality.

In can't vote for republicans or democrates in all good conscience...

Oh, matt. Another vote thrown to Nader? Again? I did it in 2000 and learned my lesson.

Our entire 21st Century could be devoted to the angry man's vote flushed down the toilet.

Let's just hope that if Nader runs, so will Perot. Then all the disenchanted can have a big party together!

Matt, Sal, No name, I am with Matt on not voting for either republicans or democrats in good conscience. We only have the choice of picking lesser of the two evils. I really liked," All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". I agree with No name that we need to be less material and get our noses out of these spiritual books and get involved. God bless.

Gotham, there are a lot of people willing to help Al Gore win on the blog looks like. god bless you.

Oh man, US election time again. This means CNN will revert to 24/7 coverage of the US election.

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Don't forget http://www.hopefundamerica.com/ Small donations help!

Obama is an good man who's going to set a course far beyond the azimuth of our present circumstances, beyond the reach of bombs or hatred, beyond our fears, maybe a little bit further than even our modest hopes.

From this hot nightmare that has been spun for gold and to which we are conjoined will arise a man who dreams that we can shed our terror.

A wayshower.

A knower.

And we will remember once again what we always knew.

Blessings BARACK OBAMA.

I mean it.

As someone looking at this as an interested bystander, I couldn't possibly contribute any informed input about the choice and merit of prospective candidates. However, there are somethings that intrigue me. I wonder whether the current anger against Bush would translate into a victory for the Democrats no matter who the next Republican candidate? Is this loss in standing directed only at Bush or is it against his party as a whole? Can one take it for granted, if current public perception remains unchanged, that the next President of the US will be a Democrat?

You mean it might actually be interesting?

Whoever made the suggestion to have voting by text messaging is brilliant. But only one ballot per phone number should be allowed.

Normally I would support the idea of a woman President, because I believe in women's equality. But when the choices are Hillary and Condi----well, I'll pass this time.

Most of the names you mentioned son't have a chance in blue hell. For the Dems its Hillary if Gore doesn't run, and Gore if he does run. Come, on, you know that, Gotham.

The Republican race is more intertesting because we will see if the traditional Republican Conservatives can take back their party from the NeoCons and religious extremists.

Yogione--what is traditional republican conservative if not a liberal compassionate democrat? The identities are all screwed up eh? Hating Bush brings reactionary politicians hence decision makers to the platform. The last great renaissence in American politics was when republicans were holding the house and democrat the white house. Then "something" took over the destiny of this country and "someone" decided to control both the houses. Now the public has been taken for the wild ride and there is no stopping this roller coaster. You just wait and pray bcoz those who could do something will be re-voting for Al, and that is no revolution.

Geeta -

"A lot of us are stupid enough to vote for a republican... some of us can not see beyond the tip of our noses, some of us are so gullible, we believe the lies we are told by the republicans. We are good but not smart enough..."

Have you ever noticed that when people have different views to ours it must mean they are stupid?

This always reminds me again of George Carlin and his bit about driving: He says the only sane drivers on the road are the ones that are going the same speed as he is. If they're driving faster they're "Maniacs!" If they are driving slower, they're "Morons!" I suspect the morons and maniacs think exactly the same thing.

I find it interesting that when we read and believe Democrat propaganda we are "informed, clear thinkers" but if we read and believe Republican propaganda, we are "gullible morons".

It's all perspective I think.

Peace,
Scott.

When you're parked, everyone's a maniac and a moron all at the same time.

noname -

What happened was people got afraid and voted their fear. They felt safest with the Republicans who kind of represented a stearn "father-figure" while the Democrats kind of represented a "hippie-mom" (fun to party with, but not the most reliable). Both viewpoints of course are incomplete, but that is essentially what happened.

The system is self-correcting and I suspect to see a shift in balance and power very soon. As I have said before, frankly the best thing that could happen to our whole system would be to vote out ALL the usual suspects and do something fresh. Won't happen though, because too many people buy the idea that voting for a third party is a "waste" of a vote. If all of the people that were afraid to waste their votes on third parties went ahead and actually "wasted" them, their votes would be valuable.

Peace,
Scott.

"When you're parked, everyone's a maniac and a moron all at the same time." -Dana Shields-

LOL! You crack me up!

Peace brother!
Scott.

LoL Dana, that was funny and true.

Scott, its not like the creed of politicians (especially the experienced ones) are in abundance anywhere, one can only bring the fresh ones if they are a plenty. I do not believe these moderate liberals or conservatives are holding rigid party rules or idiology which they can't change with times (they wouldn't be moderates if they were) so the need is to revolutionaize the idealogy itself and not look for new ideas or people.

The conservative and liberal idiology enompasses everything anyway so why bother confusing the masses with third party which will not be inventing any magic solutions?

Democracy works best when it is flexible and adaptable according to the time and place.

Americans voted their little fear of uncle Bill showing his lack of morality, what they got in exchange is a grandfather wanabe who is a strict dictator. Now we just have to wait before this dictator's legacy dies off. You just pray.

Dana Shields, 25 brought a smile to my face too. Thanks. God bless.

Scott, I agree it is our perspective. I think I am so sad with the war, with deficit, with the corruption, that I feel nonrepublican is better. Probably if a democrat does come into power I will find some fault with him or her. thanks Scott. Bless you.

Geeta -
I'm with you.

Peace,
Scott.

Geeta Darling,

You are so nice to me! #29, I agree, no one is without fault.

Why can't it, just for once, instead of,

"The better of two evils", be "The worse of two good guys"?

It sounds a bit easier to swallow.

We've had so much shoved down our throats!

Is it time for anorexia? Read the news and spew?

Now go vote! Your conscience...put aside.

Your hope, trust, allegience...nevermind!

Who's got the whitest teeth and best-lookin' wife?

He's handsome, smart, rich, charming, lovable...

I don't know. The Democrats better find one tho!

Maybe they should look in Hollywood.

Or Sherwood Forest, for the new Robin Hood!

Better go grab my bow, see ya, Keith

High-ho Silver, away!

Hey Keith, are you coming to camp tomorrow to celebrate Tiffany's birthday?? It is a surprise party! So make sure Tiffany does not know. Some one will have to bring her to the party. Let us ask Ron. (it's tomorrow night at the campsite. pssstt, it's a surprise).

Thanks, everyone!

I wonder how different these times are than those of the ancient Egyptions. Some pharaohs excelled at diplomacy, keeping neighboring kingdoms at bay through marriage, gifts, quietly veiled threats.

Others forgot how leaders REALLY lead, fell victims to their very own hubris: "I'm DA MAN". Their connections dried up like the desert.

I believe George Bush was such a man. He thought he had a direct line in with God. The bat phone. And he didn't need to connect here on earth.

He never explored the possibility that when you park your military in the middle of someone else's country, you'll quickly discover that you can't oversee "democracy" like you're some sort of alien-God-being, above and apart from that which you're creating. Running around like some sort of special procter.

Just imagine if the Continental Congress tried to draft stuff under the shadow of King George. What sort of weird thing do you think could've happened? Red coats running around, monitoring the revolution and the planning????????

To imagine that you can "oversee" the political evolution of a nation like you're casting circumstances through some sort of God's-Eye-View is arrogant AT LEAST.

No single man has that sort of Providence. And shame on George W. Bush and his religious utopianist supporters for kidding themselves otherwise.

I gotta hand it to Gotham, he starts some great discussions.

noname - good point. My views probably would have been copnsidered conservative 30 years ago.

For the record, I don't vote Partisan. The GOP has messed up big for sure. The Dems can capitalize on that if they are smart. But what the Dems can't prove is that they wouldn't just make a whole slew of different mistakes if they controlled the Presidency, the House and the Senate.

Everyone likes Barak Obama, but there's no way he's going to be Pres. At best he can get the Muslim vote, part of the black vote, and all the Deaniacs and Kucinich crowd.

Now the system is being gamed, and the gamers are not interested in having a true Democracy. On another thread, we all speculated how Singapore is what the Neocons desire in the USA - a democracy in name only, but a dictatorship in practice.

This is because the neocons want absolute power, which it is impossible to have in a true Democracy.

This is the the true test of a politician: you have to study their track record, and look at where the money behind them is coming from, while simultaneously closing your ears to ANYTHING they are saying.

A politicians actions and finances will tell all, and this information is publicly available to those who are willing to dig a little to find it.

Politicians manipulate the system because they are betting that almost no one will research their past voting records, and even fewer people will research what special interests the take money from.

They also will bet that most voters will make the mistake of listening to their speeches to try to decide what they stand for.

Most politicians do not stand for a majority of what they say. My opinion, of course, but I think this is especially true of the neocons.

The neocons don't care about religion really, but they are willing to manipulate religious sentiment to attain power. They don't even want a democracy, because their goal is to overthrow democracy, but the are willing to use propaganda that has all kinds of flowery references to the founding fathers, to our history, to "spreading democracy" and so on if it helps them rise to power.

Unfortunately, Hillary shows the same tendency. her foreign policiy vis-a-vis Iraq is virtually identical to Bush's. If you are voting against Bush based on the war, it doesn't make sense to vote for Hilary because the policy will be the same one under her.

She has also always voted to try to consolidate power in the hands of the President whenever a referendum on presidential powers has come up.

The president is supposed to be a servant of the people, but these people want to be President so thay can put others to their service.

Also, under Bush, many resolutions have been quietly passed that limit the freedom of the press, increase government secrecy at all levels, and hold the executive branch above the rule of law.

I will be very unpopular for saying this, but as you guys already know, I don't care about that, so I will tell the truth: Hilary's motives for becoming President are not good. She's a ruthless power-seeker.

Of them all, the only one I see that actually electable and wants to help people is Al Gore. His job would be to convince the oil and coal industries that he is not tryng to destroy them. He can actually push through environmental policy changes if he can make friends on both sides. Like it or not, if big oil and big coal do not want change, it will be very hard to get change. They have to be brought on board, and that will take an acceptable deal in which they can continue to reap mega-profits even while switching over to more environmentally friendly energy policies. They are NOT going to give up their profits without a war. And when they say go to war, a majority of politicians in both parties jump to it and commit our kids to die.

Mega-corporations are the new nations. They play by different rules, and profit is the bottom line. Megacorporationshave money tothrow around, and they don't care about human rights, genocides, pollution and all the rest of the do-gooder agenda. A corporation exists in order to turn a profit. Period. Whateverpolitician can pass laws that protect their profits get their money. It really is that simple.

I wouldn't vote for Barak Obama out of compassion: he'd be assassinated before one year in office, guaranteed. He's way, way, way outside the envelope of what this country will tolerate in the White House.
