Gautam Patil - May 07, 2006
May 7th, 2006.
Hello Everyone! I’m feeling like a new man. I shaved off my beard, my mustache, washed my hair and my body. All of which are compliments of returning to base camp.
I thought I had been taking good care of myself but all the dirt I scrubbed off proved otherwise! Also, when I looked in the mirror, I noticed the tip of my nose had been burnt. This was a surprise because I make it a point to apply generous amounts of sunscreen. It must have occurred from blowing my nose so often. And, I must have lost a little weight in my stomach because my jeans are feeling a little big.
We have been at base camp for a couple of days now. It’s refreshing to return to base camp because it gives my body a little time to rest and heal and it allows me the opportunity to meet with doctors. The acclimatization process has taken a lot out of me both physically and mentally so my body welcomes the rest. Although my cough is getting better and the vomiting, from my gag reflex triggered by coughing, has decreased, my ribs have become pretty sore. There is no change in my eye and it continues to be monitored. I do, however, have an interesting development- I have a sunburned tongue. That’s right, a sunburned tongue! I must have been breathing thru my mouth while climbing and the sun reflecting off the glacier somehow managed its way into my mouth! But not to worry as it is healing nicely.
Weather has been good and we are all looking forward to summit bids! Hopefully they’ll come soon.
May this message find you well.
Climb High!

Wow, that's rough. And I just read somewhere that there's been an unusual amount of snow fall in the Everest region for this time of the year. Wish you good luck and good health.
Dear Gautum
You and your team are close to the limit of what humans can endure. Please take very good care of yourself -- all of you. Our prayers are with you.
love, Heather
Dear Gautam,
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with all of us. This is a "once in a lifetime" experience that you are having, and reading your diary is the closest most of us will ever get.
A sun burned tongue???? I have never heard of such a thing.
God bless you all, and our prayers are with you,

Gautam, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I feel like I am with you all up there when I read about, shaving, bathing, blowing noses, sun burnt tongue,(I have never heard of that either). Take good care of yourself. Have a good rest. I pray that the cough leaves you alone. I will pray for your success and good health. God bless.
I posted this afternoon to this blog! I see it is missing; It was nice too(as usual.) : (

Dear Gautam,
Sending you and your fellow climbers, healing prayers.
This afternoon, our class got a glimpse of the climb through Lance's video on EPP...they were so excited! Most of them wanted to see it over and over and over!
This month in Toronto, we celebrate South Asians. Your climb will be especially highlighted at school.
Keeping in touch,
Cinda
Dear Gautam-I have been in a design-mood of late. I have made you a pretty nice poster with the slogan you use to end your posts "Climb High" across the top--at the bottom is your name, and the year 2006 : )
I hope you like it Gautam-you inspired it! : )

Dear Friends,
Here's sharing with you the update for our Peace Climbers...
"World History – Palestinian and Israelis – Together, on Everest Summit Push, Now!
May 14, 2006
Today, May 14th, The Everest Peace Project team has left advanced base camp (21,000 feet) to begin its history-making summit push. The summit team consists of: Ali Bushnaq, David (Dudu) Yifrah, Micha Yaniv, Selebelo Selamolela, Tonya Riggs, Jamie McGuinness and Brad Clement. Gautam Patil will leave tomorrow and Lance Trumbull is staying back as advanced base camp manager who will manage all communication with the team and the outside world.
Never before has there been such a diverse Everest team consisting of people from different faiths and cultures – especially including Palestinian and Israeli men; our intention is to promote peace and teamwork and to “unite the world on top of the world”.
Tonight our peace climbers will stay at the North Col 7000 meters (23,000 feet). Tomorrow, there will be a rest day and they will again acclimatize and stay at the North Col. On May 16th, they will go to Camp two 7600 meters (25,000 feet); on May 17th they will be at camp three 8300 meters (27,000 feet). May 18th will hopefully be our summit day (depending on the weather).
We will have more updates on our peace climber’s progress.
More soon…
Lance"

May they all find that which they seek.
Blessing be to thee,
Cinda
