Gotham Chopra - June 14, 2006
Dude, the World Cup kind of rocks!!!! It's really brought out the imperialist in me. I mean, as ant-Bush as I am, I still find myself really really craving that the Americans would have come out and just kicked some ass in a sport the rest of the world adores so much.
I mean it would just be so great to have the good old Yanks come out in a sport that they've really only started to take seriously in the last decade and just blast ass. Alas, not this year i fyou happend to see them get wrecked Monday by the Czeck Republic.
So instead, today I was roaming the Addidas store contemplating which country's bandwagon I am going to leap onto. Admittedly it's getting to the stage, where this may just become a fashion choice. I.E. which jersey is the coolest.
So far, however, this is my analysis: as much as I love cheering for the Ivory Coasts and Angolas of the world, I've concluded I really should choose a team that has the potential to go all the way. Depite being a Beckham guy (I am totally straight but that's a good looking man), I can't get on the English wagon because they are just so Anglo. Same with the Germans, the French, the Swuiss and Dutch teams and a few of the other Eastern Europeans. Then there are the Spanish and the Italians - both of which countries I really love - but don't really feel the pull from.
Turning to S. America, gotta love Brazil and Argentina because they just party like no one else. But rooting for either is like cheering for the New York Yankees in a way if you know what I mean.
I liked Iran but the fact that their crazy President is using the team as a propaganda piece makes them tough to root for (and that they suck). Mexico looked good and watching them on Univision is a lot of fun (but they did play Iran who, as noted, really sucks).
Kind of dig S. Korea but we all know they're not going anywhere....Same with the Aussies.
So...yeah I don't know. Portugal?
Conclusion: I am open for business. Make me a convicing argument and I'll get on the ride.

U picking a wife or a team....??
Brazil or Holland. They have the potential & the looks.
Are you really Deepak's son?!!
You don't "kick ass" in soccer. It is called "the beautiful game" and "the theatre of dreams".
And finally, one does not choose an alegiance. It has to develop organically. I suggest you commit to watching a great deal of soccer until you find yourself drawn to a particular league. The best leagues in the world are the English and the Spanish. Although Brazil rock, most of the best South American and US players ply their trade in Europe and mainly in Spain, England, Italy and Germany. Since you speak English and you want to understand the game to appreciate it, I suggest the English Premier League would make the most sense as it is widely televised in the US. However, the Spanish league is outstanding and some of the best flair pplayers are based in Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Don't just arbitrarily pick a team. If you are going to pick one for this tournament it should be the US. They are your team and they probably think they "kick ass". Which explains alot. But you don't have to back a winner. you have to align to your own country and then pick a second favorite. I assume you consider the US as your country. Otherwise you should follow cricket and give up on soccer altogether.
I agree this World Cup is fantastic. It has all the best elements of the NCAA tournament and the Olympics.
From a spiritual perspective, I'd be curious to hear your father's take on the event, perhaps in the context of a discussion about the role of sports in peacemaking. Aleady this World Cup is credited with helping to heal the civil war in Ivory Coast. And the mere presence of the transcendent star Pele was said to have brought about ceasefires in Nicaragua and Africa. It's extraordinary what a simple game can accomplish.
As to your New York Yankees simile, I'd say that depending on what city you're in, wearing a Yankee jersey is as likely to get you into a brawl as it is to make you a friend.
Wearing a canary yellow Brazilian soccer jersey, on the other hand, will get you a smile everytime (except maybe in Argentina). It's been said that around the world, Brazil is everyone's second favorite team. People love Brazilian soccer because they play beautifully and are a joy to watch. Their ball control, their perfect triangle passes, their "samba futebol", their creativity...it's kind of like watching a cross between a US Olympic basketball team and the Harlem Globetrotters.
However, even though most of their players have made millions playing in Europe, they seem more humble than many NBA players. Brazil is easy to root for not just because the team is exceptionally good, but because Brazilian people in general are easy to get along with, and yes, they throw great parties.
In a sense, cheering for Brazil is like cheering for Ivory Coast or Angola, insofar as Brazil is a poor country. I'd say cheering for Brazil in soccer is more like cheering for India in cricket than cheering for the Yankees. Nobody accuses Brazil of being an evil empire!
Also, keep in mind that even though Brazil is a highly touted team, they're certainly beatable, as its most recent game against Croatia demonstrated. After they won the World Cup in 1994, many predicted they'd win big in 1998. Sports Illustrated even featured a cover of the team with the question "Unbeatable?". They eventually lost to France, which hasn't scored a goal in World Cup play since.
Then, after Brazil played poorly in qualifying for the 2002 Cup, most predicted the team wouldn't do well. Instead Brazil won every game it played for the first time in World Cup history.
Now people are again wondering if they're unbeatable, but true soccer fans know how fickle the game can be. In every Cup there are teams which defy expectations and unexpectedly gel or fall apart (2002: USA and South Korea; Argentina and France). As with the Yankees and the US Olympic basketball team, Brazil can be beaten.
Besides, if you're going to jump on a bandwagon, you might as well choose one with filled with fun people, great music, and hot women! Of course I'm Brazilian-American, so I may be just a little bit biased here...
As to the US team, as poorly as they played against the Czechs, they could still shock the world by beating Italy on Saturday. Now that would be interesting!
On a separate note, there's a controversy about the new official ball designed by Adidas for this Cup. It has no seams, and keepers don't seem to care for it because they say it knuckles more than previous balls did. Is this an effort by FIFA to generate more goals? I don't know how this has played out statistically so far in this Cup, but doesn't it remind you of how major league baseball supposedly "juiced" the baseball to generate more home runs?
In any case, let's hope Brazil and Argentina play in the knockout stage. That would make a Yankee-Red Sox playoff game look like a spring training exhibition!
No matter who you root for, it's going to be a fun month.
G - cool to see you are into this tourney. but the thing is until you've watched it from a country that actually gives a sh** about it, you have no idea actually how cool it is!
here in singapore, the whole city is nuts. the games are at 9 pm, midnight, and 3 am, and most people are staying up at least till 2 am watching them.
yeah, it blew to watch the US get wiped out, but at least our women kick the rest of the world's ass.
since i cannot form an allegiance with any team, what i am doing is betting on every single game with a friend of mine! each night one of us picks a spread and the other gets to pick a team. this way, every game i get someone to cheer for. the only restriction we have is i get america every game. at the end of the 64 games, whoever wins gets a free dinner at a fancy restaurant.
i really can't go with choosing a team to jump on the bandwagon.
anyways talk soon,
bc

Our next President is going to have the character such that he can show up at the World Cup and everyone will be glad he's there. I picture a standing ovation just because he's stopped invading countries!
Honestly, watching it just a little, I have the feeling that the rest of the world is moving on, tired, bored, injured by our unremitting narcisism.

"I liked Iran but the fact that their crazy President is using ....."
The president of Iran is anti-American because he is primarily anti-Bush. So are you, you admit, anti-Bush.
So if he is crazy, what are you?
So if they suck, what do you do?
Hi Gotham,
Glad to see you're enjoying the games so much. The excitement of others is contagious - and yours seems so fun that I just may pick a team myself! As far as which one goes, I like Bharats idea.
Btw, Scott bought your dad's new book, Kama Sutra, and I wanted to mention that I LOVE the artwork. It totally makes the book.
Gotham,
Choose between Madonna and Beckham and I believe once upon a time you probably were more in love with Madonna than Beckham now :).
Ok, so Madonna played Evita Peron in a movie - world's most powerful woman once upon a time (40’s and 50’s). And Argentina right now looks to me the team to beat - they have looked absolutely composed, focused and have met every critic’s expectation.

Dear Gotham,

Gotham:
Hi! This is perhaps the first time I am scribbling something on your post. I always read your posts but your interests, likes, dislikes & concerns are so different from mine that I find myself speechless & short of knowledge & experience to say anything!
Your interests and concerns necessarily involve politics & sports (boys will be boys kinda thing!) & mine are based on creativity, art, spirituality, etc. I live in a world of my own (!)& you are so actively involved in the "real" world that it's difficult to find a common thread! :)
However, let me tell u one thing here. I connect with u... somewhere deep. I find ur posts very appealing & interesting. They almost always transfer me to an entirely different plane of thought! I aspire to gather enough knowledge & exposure in these spheres so as to be able to say something sensible someday in response to your posts!
Till then,
au revoir!
What children we are with the games that we play Marek.
2:Nil.....2:Nil.....2:Nil......2:Nil!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go England!
I will forever root for the Netherlands, since that's my country. It's funny how you start feeling all nationalistic during a world cup. Normally I'm not half as nationalistic as I've been this week.

Finally, Intent gets with it-and mentions the most brilliant sporting event at the present time. Was wondering whether any of the contributors would pick up on footie fever that has been talked about and is being celebrated everywhere expcept here...what can I say, as an ardent footie fan-currently in England and due to go back to India on Sunday....the best match so far for me saw Brasil, after a slow start just show what makes them the Champions. As the boys (England), they did get two fantastic golas in the last minute against T & T (who played brilliantly!!). Love it, the only event which has really a unique sense of bringing countries together...wish I could have got to Germany...next time!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! :-)
I am not a great soccer fan - but I am glued to TV too, everybody else is sooo into it - I mean they only get 2 to 3 hours of sleep and go to work the next day - claiming to work!!:)On the phone my dad has indepth analysis with my brother and his friends!!!
Fever has definitely spread!! Everyone all of a sudden is carrying a soccer ball -I need to get one. Thats what you should buy Gotham,a soccer ball, and keep it kicking around, get it over your shoulder and kick with ya head!! looks cool on TV anyways :)
Me, I always support the under dogs :) Did you all hear that in Dili, Timor's capital, the kids are playing their own soccer world cup, with the assistance of the Australian Army...as they dont have any TVs to watch the games!!

If you do not really support any particular team in the world cup then that is a good way to be,
Really when all is said and done there are no should have been's there are no must be's in footbal or in life in General.
Recently I just spent a time with some people who do not even know who is the president of America right now, and no this was not in a pub! (Before you start with that wise crack Marek)
From the locational and Ignorant self the world cup is a contest, it is this us against them primitive mentality, it is the tribal instinct of the beast!
From a spiritual view point it is the time when nations come together and unite and when the final whistle goes we swap shirts and shake hands and thank our brothers and sisters for playing with us and supporting us.
Wouldn't it be great if we could come together always in life united on one time and be united as a global entity and not as a side or an opposition?
What would bring all the nations of the world together and instead of a contest we unite and swap shirts in unity, regardless of country of birth, color, religion, politics, or sexuality or any of the things that makes this person different from that person??????
I wonder..........
Shut up Marek!

Cheers.
Owen, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Terry, Crouch, Cole, Campbell, Ferdinand... the real superstars team seen in a long long long time.
Go E-------N--------G---------L--------A----------N---------D!!!!!!
Hey AJ, hows it going Buddy?
To much spiritual Juice was the cause my friend!
Who do you support in the world cup then?
Hi Gotham,
I'm least interested in football but i am curious about your K Lounge -- a Kama Sutra bar and lounge in New York City.
What is it all about? Can you give me the details?
Cheers, Rohit
I will be backing the host nation the Germans.Being hosts, they have a clear advantage and they have a very efficient team, may not be as star studded as Great Britain but they are going to win.I am waging my money on them.

Well, my dear Simon,
it all starts with a mission statement..
something about..
pleasure (kama) as one of the four goals of life. The other three being: Dharma which is harmony with the universe; Arth (material abundance) and Moksha (enlightenment),
But, if that cave, works for you..;)
I don't understand all those other people,
weird neuro-associations,
do you? Simon?
Love, Passion!
World Cup Update: Argentina trounce Serbia 6-0.
Argentina is a formidable force in this world cup. My top four would be Argentina, Brazil, Spain and England.
Good to see you back, Simon.
Cheers!

Hi Gotham, et.al.
I'm also enjoying the World Cup. I'm rooting for England (since Canada didn't make it) in honour of my late British grandfather who taught me about *football*. But there are so many teams to like. I love the spirit in WC - the pure joy of the game seems to be celebrated in football more than other sports. If England go out, I'll probably pick whichever team captures my imagination - there's always one, isn't there?
But here's my argument, since you asked so nicely ;-) in favour of England... despite his pretty-boy-looks, don't you just want to see Beckham blaze to World Cup glory just once? He's such a brilliant player and had such bad luck in previous tournaments, I'd love to see him win the prize, preferably on a long, bending corner kick.
Just a thought!
hi,Gotham hav u any idea about my team Argentina.my team will win the world cup this year.
Hi Navin, Argentina have played very well I agree, even though I support England and hope they will win the world cup, I think that Englands Performance in the world Cup so far has been very poor, even though we have had 2 wins so far I think the play has been a shambles.
It might just be that the England players have just got the Jitters with it being such an important competition, or it may be reverse phsycology to throw the bigger teams off guard.
Hi Sheba, I would like to see Canada in the world cup also, The thing is having lived there I don't think the Canadians take Soccor (as it is called there) very seriously as a national sport, even though lots of Canadians I know love to watch Soccor games, if it were a world hockey tournament then it would be a different storey LOL.
hi,Gotham hav u any idea about my team Argentina.my team will win the world cup this year.
England winning the world cup? Noooooooo way!!! England can never keep it together-perhaps if Sven puts Lennon and Rooney together again they could play better than they have so far.Be nice if they did after the Rugby World Cup and the Ashes-but don't think they will. They have to play better, Lampard et al have to actually get the balls into the net!! They lose their bottle, that's the problem. I say Italia!!! Played fantastically! Argentina, Germany (always manages to sustain their play)Brasil (not sure if they can win it this time-although their footie is a pure pleasure to watch). Spain, could be in with a chance.
Plus the Italians are the hottest footballers on the pitch at the moment-ha,ha!! Nice hair..wonder which shampoo they're using? LOreal-cos they're worth it-anyone remember Ginola? :-)
Even though I am not a football fan and can't wait for it to be over, I shall root for England.
I watched the last few minutes of 1966 World Cup Final through the window of Radio Rentals in Bournemouth and when the 'They think it's all over? It is now!!!' goal was scored and I heard the roar of the Wembley crowd, little did I realise that one day I would be married to a voice in that crowd. That was the good part.
The downside is that having now been married to that voice for 33 years I have had to endure at least 8 World Cups in the vague and remote hope that England will give a repeat performance.
So, I shall be shouting..
Come on England and Eng-a-land, Eng-a-land Eng-a-land and hope with everything crossed that Football's Coming Home....
Just so that I can see an Old Man really happy.
England isn't going to cut it.
No matter how much I want them to win, the nasty uppercut of reality tells me something else. They are too big on individuals to function as a team. And look at their work as a unit - it's pathetic.
Same thing happened to the World XI against Australia in cricket recently - each superstar came boorishly unconcerned on to the pitch giving a toss - "Team? What team, buddy?" - did his own thing and went back to his earplugs.
And frankly, anyone who thinks Owen is going to listen to Beckham, Lampard to Crouch, Cole to Beckham, Ferdinad to Rooney, Campbell to Crouch, Terry to Lampard, Gerrard to Owen - has had too many already.
Argentina looks good. Their attacking play is really attractive. Italy was a revealation in their first game, can't wait for their second one today.
Personally, this is my second big World Cup after Italia 90. And I want new names to come and cover the old great ones like Salvatore Schillaci (remember?), Baressi, Walter Zenga, Donadoni, Maldini, Serena, Gianluca Vialli, Paul Gascoigne, David Platt, Gary Linekar, Chris Waddle, Enzo Schifo, Thon, Littbarski, Matthaus, Rudi Voller, Klinsmann, Brehme, Maradona, Caniggia, Sergio Goycoechea (remember?), Roger Milla, Rijkard, Van Basten, Gullitt and many many others - who came and sat in my memory and have since stayed when I watched my first world cup in humid nights that followed the slowest boring mornings and afternoons in the ordinary, nobody-wants-to-visit town of Rewa on the edge of MP and UP where my now deceased father was temporarily transferred and where I watched these names shape my memory through the flicker from black and white television switched on in 'hey no noise guys, dad mom and sister are sleeping' nights when I sat surrounded by a bunch of similar aged boys whose faces I can vaguely remember under a strain and whose names I have completely forgotten in the last 16 years in this turning world.
So I am gearing up for new memories and I want them to come from everywhere.
In the meanwhile, here's one team that has Owen, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Cole, Ferdinand, Beckham, Crouch, Terry, Campbell...
Oh.
Dear Sumant,
Enjoyed reading your post. The names you took were of all time greats and brought back several nostalgic memories from my school days. Who can forget the dreadlocks of Ruud Gullitt!
Cheers!
Navin
PS: Remember I had spoken about the proximity of Mars and Saturn in the celestial skies here on Intent several days back? Indian TV channels like Aaj Tak etc. are today talking about it. People who have a weak Saturn in their charts need to be careful for about the next one week.
Yes Navin - those were the days, that was the cup.
Italia 90 remains one of my strongest and earliest sporting memories along with World Championship of Cricket 85, World Series Cup 86 (India-Australia-New Zealand), World Cup 87 et al.
If I close my eyes I can still see Schillaci running full steam on a great pass and lobbing it above the goalkeeper (don't remember the team), a stout Baresi and a skiny Maldini defending spiritedly against anybody and anything, David Platt scoring a last minuter against Belgium in pre-quarters, Matthaus' blasting sprints in Germany's 5-0 pounding of Saudi Arabia in their opener, Linekar's gentlemanly elegance, England going out after a touch of a self goal (Des Walker?) on a free kick, Goycoechea being hugged crazily by everybody as he saved one penalty after another in one match after another... and a lot else - some hazy and the others some more.
As I said - those were the days, that was the cup.
This is great!

My Dear Gotham,
I stand corrected. After seeing Argentina bang 6 past Serbia it seems that "kicking ass" is not such a bad metaphor in some cases.
I was rooting for the US tonight as I don't care much for Italian football. Always cheating and playing dirty. It was by far the most dramatic game so far, if not the most refined. Well done the US, that was a gutsy show and a much better performance than the other night. Italy are a good side and that was some result, but knowing the Italian temprament, this result could cause them to completely self destruct before the next game. Let's hope so.
Well well, Trinidad and Tobago...I am still proud of this team for reaching the World Cup for the first time in the history of this game!
Yes, they do need more experience and skill in getting the ball to the net, not just making sure the other team doesn't score, and we know that didn't happen with England.
All and all, they did GREAT! and a team with lots of spirit and determination...well on their way to opening paths for many other Trinidadian players to look forward to.
Next game, Tuesday. Go T & T go!!!

My pick for the World Cup is Argentina.

I am not sure of how gutsy the US were tonight. They are yet to score a goal of their own in the touranment and look weary just after two matches.
Correction regarding my post #39.
Germany (then West Germany) trounced UAE 5-1 in their opener in Italia 90.

Hi Sumant,
I read what you had to say above regarding your analysis of the world cup soccer so far and I have to say that you are spot on with what you have said regarding England and also who is playing well as a team and who is not.
One thing to remember though, Football is not very predictable at all.
Hi Simon,
Things are hotting up now, so let's all gear up. And yes, I also think the unpredictability of it all is going to give us surprises. I am all for it.
Ghana played well. Even USA fought really well. And what's coming can only be better.
My money is still on Brasil, Argentina and Germany. Ghana played extremely well-be fantastic if they got through.
Like many women, I used to think football was a complete waste of time!
However I have just come back from Malaysia and Indonesia, where people young and old crowded into cafes and bars night after night to cheer on their favourite team.
In the evening, the football pitches and beaches were filled with kids playing barefoot, sometimes without a real football.
People who have very little in life, joining in a global game. Even though we may follow different teams, I realised that sport, like music, is something that unites the world.

TODAY
Go England Go....Go T & T Go!!!!

The English are one bunch of lucky a**&^%$. Should have lost today.
ok, farewell Trinidad and Tobago...perhaps next time! Thank goodness for the goalkeepers, otherwise the scores would have definitely been much more than 2 - 0

On to round 2.
My pick is still Argentina!!!
The most overrated team is probably Germany - they can play like a machine but when teams like Brazil peaking - they will be in for some trouble in the later stages.
Gotham --
Argentina definitely seems like the favorite right now, and they totally deserve that attention, but where's the fun in rooting for the powerhouses? Stick with USA!!
And speaking of good-looking men, Italy's Gilardino isn't all that bad, and an amazing striker to boot!!
Cheers,
Tara
Hi Sumant, Navin and all the Soccer fans out there.
You will love this one.

Argentinians should be relieved than elated at this point - everyone expected them to put on a brilliant show like the Germans and if not for Maxi's brilliance Mexico looked pretty good to get through.
Now, Germans should walk into the Quaterfinal with a slight edge over a tired struggling Argentina who seem to have lost the rythm.
Germany Vs Argentina is the big one.
It's going to be some match! I think thanks to their physical, relentless play, Germany will go ahead.
Mexico v Argentina was a "beautiful game".
Finally Beckham showed yesterday he hasn't lost his touch, he might not be as agile as he was a few years back, but he still can win a match. If only it were not for the awful referee, Rooney would have scored at least one.
I predict Germany Vs Brasil (Finals)a repeat of 2002
