Gotham Chopra - July 26, 2006
Sorry for the disappearing act. I've been around and been reading but have def had some serious blogstipation of late and not dropped pen in a while (I just made that up, meaning not written). Most of my time has gone to our new Virgin venture. Check it out: http://www.virgincomics.com
Feedback welcome. And no doubt, many will trash me as yes this is an attempt to build a revenue generating company. Shucks.
Never quite worked this hard probably because I was a spoiled a$$hole. Not really. Sort of.
Been unplugged from the news and don't feel quite qualified to comment as no doubt I will over-simplify things and sound ignorant. But wait, let me guess Israelis and Islamists not getting along? Refresher on Isaac and Ishmael necessary - hello?
More: I went to a Madonna concert last week in nyc. Seriously I'm straight. She's pretty amazing. Sat next to Kelly Rippa of Regis and Kelly fame. Have to admit she's kind of cute, in a white chick sort of way. I also chatted with Leo Dicaprio backstage. How's that for name-dropping? Neither said anything of any substance whatsoever.
What else? I'm going to India this weekend for a month! Looking for advice on where to for a weekend of vacation in the south. Fire away.
Ummm...Mallika informs me that the blog has been fiery of late - threats of lawsuits and all! Wow. Do I need to go see more strippers and tell stories to lighten the mood? Sorry mom-in-law - that's just a joke. Really.
Is the fact that the whole friggen country so damn hot just part of Al Gore's marketing strategy? I sweat a good 22 hours a day. Just wondering.
Can the Red Sox win the world series? That would be really awesome.
I drank a big coffee a few hours ago. It's now midnight and i am soooo not tired. wow.
Happy Birthday Leelu. Your Mamo loves u more every day!

Hi Gotham,
Too many names dropped here....haha
I was doing it just a while ago too.
Cheers, Rohit
Dear You, Mr Gotham,
The artwork is cool. I am from the Philippines and our country also has a comics industry, albeit a fledgling one, but with similarly awesome, talented artists and writers. One of the links below show the works of a Filipio comics artist offered to work for MGM in the 1950's and was also part of the Swamp Thing.

Have read the Q&A site and was wow-ed by the powerful combination of your dad & Shekhar Kapur as well as Virgin Comic's goal "to tap the best talents & creators around the world to build the myths of tomorrow."
and most importantly, in the telling of good stories, (mythological or not?).
The Director's Cut is also a very promising venue for a lot of materials.
Are you looking to similarly expand to various genres or are you focusing on mythological stories now?
I will be waiting for your submission guidelines.
Thank You. =)

HI Gotham,
Nice to see you posting. You have a way of lightening things up - stripper stories or not. And that's refreshing!
Briefly looked at your site. Looks great. Scott will love it. Wishing you much success with it.
Love, Kristin
Saw your Devi through your plug in. Will see other characters later and make comments.
The story is drab. Will not appeal to children. Adults will soon lose interest. Sorry Deepak, the writer. Good Luck.
and now what your write about IB:
INTENT MEDIA L.L.C. (www.intentblog.com)
Intent Media combines the unique creativity of both the East and the West. As pioneers of their respective crafts, Deepak Chopra and Shekhar Kapur have touched millions with their work and stood at the forefront of bringing Eastern insights and creativity to the West. Their wide reach extends over almost every continent on the planet and will tap these rich resources for up and coming talent, unlocking and supplementing their vast creativity as a means to bringing the rich heritage of Asia to the world. Gotham Chopra, a partner in Intent, brings the experience of having created a comic book Bulletproof Monk that was later made into a major motion picture produced by MGM Studios.
"Intent Media combines the unique creativity of both the East and the West."
What creativity do you see here?
Some old ladies bitching...
Some old men complaining...
Some duped ones blessing, praying, sending virtual hugs, virtual kisses...
Some enlightened ones singing love and peace songs in their bath rooms or talking to their dogs...
Some plagiarizing journalists threatening law suits...
Some social workers helping the needy, in fact needing them for their own survival - physical or psychological...
Some wayward scientists and guru proving existence of God through quantum mechanics...
Writers, artists messed up in their thoughts/lives...
Poets writing, "roses are red/violets are blue" poetry
Mothers telling tales of their kids...
Old falling sick and dying...
Young falling in secret virtual love. Mostly Indian men, western women...
Hearing a million times, love peace, love peace...
Readers offering their biased advice on politics, war and middle-east...
and the guru coming when he wants to come to say what he wants to say, and disappearing...
20 to 30 people (where are the thousands and millions?), most of them having petty daily verbal fights over their delicate, soft hurt egos...
what an "unlocking and supplementing their vast creativity"?
Could you please explain if what you say about IB and what we see about IB is true. Who is hog washing who?
PS: You know your Bulletproof Monk movie was an utter disaster and failure. Did you not lose money in that venture? Was it based on a story you wrote?
People are threatening to sue? That makes me laugh. GOD how bored are people these days?! (unfortunately i'm well aware of the answer). Laaame.
Anyway, the comics look SO COOL! :D As a representative of the teenage audience, I go "Yay!" at it. And drool a little from what i see so far. Are these comics going to be available world-wide?
Disconnecting from the news is not a bad thing. I actually skip all your newsy posts anyway. To give energy/attention to the drama feeds it. That doesn't mean being totally ignorant of whats going on, but not to be caught up in the vortex of doom and just hold center and compassion for all that is happening. Plus, its always the same old stuff, different names (sometimes).
I think you should take some medication for that blogstipation and get back to posting, mister!
Hi Gotham,
Great website and comics (I've always been a buff).
Peace,
SCott.
Wonder if you would like to comment on this editorial from Times of India Gotham re: Recent Mumbai bombings:
"Other cities mourn their victims. New Yorkers still grieve over 9/11. Londoners still remember with horror the blast in the underground. In Bali, they still light candles and shed tears for their dead. In Madrid, crowds still gather at the site where 192 people died in a terrorist strike. Every city lives with its memories of pain and loss.
Every city tries to learn from the experience so it can cope better. They do not gloss over the tragedy and pretend as if nothing happened. They try to hunt down the guilty, punish them, strengthen their intelligence.
They put in place civic safeguards . Bush went one step further. He bombed the hell out of terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan. Here? Here, no one has a clue. Everyone’s covering up for the other. No one wants to take responsibility. If you hear eye witnesses on TV, they all say the same thing. The railway officials vanished.
The police were nowhere to be seen. If it were not for the local people who rushed to help, the body count would have been double. The city’s governing machinery looked as if it was on vacation.
Hours after the event, leaders emerged from their rat holes to deliver their usual sermons. Do not listen to rumours . Do not be scared. Do not allow peace and goodwill to be compromised . Show the world we can cope with terrorism. Show them Mumbai is unafraid. And, oh yes, go back to work tomorrow as if nothing happened. We are there to look after you.
Oh yeah? We know by now what that means. The 1993 bomb blasts accused are still walking around, free men, 13 years after the crime. The fast track court is yet to pass judgment. Meanwhile, the victims and their families have been forgotten.
The promised compensation has not reached anyone. No one knows where the witnesses have vanished. But we have not learnt from that experience. The crisis response system has not improved one iota. The public hospitals are still as hopelessly inadequate as they always were. The police still vanish the moment something like this happens . All we get is tall talk and glib lectures about Mumbai’s undying spirit.
We pay more taxes than any other city. We contribute more to the nation’s progress and growth than all other cities put together. Yet nothing improves here, nothing changes. We keep hearing promises about the waterways opening up, bridges being built, public transportation being upgraded, roads improving, new and affordable hospitals. But all that happens ultimately is builders and politicians get rich while life for the common citizen deteriorates.
It’s time we stopped allowing ourselves to be taken for granted. It’s time we got angry. Really angry. It’s time we stopped taking systems failure for granted. It’s time we demanded more commitment from those we pay to keep in office.
It’s time we stopped allowing them to monkey around with our emotions by talking about how brave, how noble, how wonderful we are. It’s time they worked for their wages and ensured our welfare, our safety, our present and our future. If they can’t do that, let’s chuck them out. "
hi gotham.
do comics themselves generate revenue? or does most of it come when the properties are sold to movie studios and such?
so neither leo dicrapio or kelly rippa said anything of substance, huh? not surprising. the question is.... did you?
Gotham, Virgin Comics is awesome. I thought the art work was outstanding, and I liked the stories.
Gotham, my suggestion is city of Mysore for the weekend. It is a beautiful place. Stay at the palace turned into hotel. It is beautiful. There is lots to do there.
Halebeedu, Belur, and Shravanabelagola are worth seeing. Those can be seen in a day. These places are famous for their sculptures. The roads were bumpy, when I visited them last with my girls.
Shravanabelagola is a Jain pilgrimage site. Take lots of photos.
Is it Leela's birthday?? Happy birth day to Leela.
God bless you Gotham.
wow.. it looks like indian anime...seems exciting!
Hey Gotham: Really enjoyed your post here--I just put had to let my "Intentblog Patzi" head back home after a treasured weekend with your dad and David Simon's fabulous staff, and then some more "treasured days" roaming around my area with Patzi, so it was nice to pop on the Intentblog to fill in the sudden emptiness of the "human delights" that have now materialized from my first year with your family's "cyber home."
It was really nice to see a fresh supply of blogs from you and Mallika, and a battery from some of your increasingly established contributers--great to see the steps you guys have implemented regarding those who derive glee in "poisoning the well!!!"
Nice work--to you and your sister's extra efforts toward this end.
Regarding your work--haven't yet looked at the site you listed above--but will do so as I'm particularly interested in seeing the work of the artists you've engaged.
I hadn't connected you with "Bullet Proof Monk"--but....I watched it last fall and really enjoyed it--sooo.....since I've watched it two more times since then......that is the best way to tell you how much I enjoyed the theme, plot/subplots, as well as the marvelous imagery employed in this movie--Excellent work all-around--and that coming from a true "movie addict!"
Again--"Good on you"--to all of the Intentblog administrators, especially Mallika and Nirav, and the wonderful posters here who've so diligently endured and strenghtened the integrity of the Intentblog's immune system! Dave
Gotham, may I tell you more about Sravanabelagola?? This place is famous for the colossal monolith, Gommateshwara or Bahubali. He stands 58 feet tall on the hill called Indragiri. There is no other monolithic image that tall anywhere in the world. Gommateshwara was a Jain saint. Among Jains there are two sects. One is shwetamber,(shwetamber saints wear white) and the other is digambara. The digambara saints are naked. This is a naked statue.
Halebeedu and beluru are close by, and are famous for the delicately carved figures. They have used a particular stone which allows this kind of carving.
There are guides who speak fluent Indian English. These three places are a must if you are an artist at heart. Have a lot of fun in India. God bless.
Me, myself and I,
talking to myself in the mirror
and thinking; I am a heroe!
Nice artwork in the comics. Hope it blossoms for you.
I like your self-deprecating humor. Like how you titled your post "Me".
"Me"
That's what it's all about.
Hilarious....
Stay in the groove...
Gautam: Besides Mysore, Bangalore, and Kerala (beaches over there in particular), you should also think of checking out Coorg.
Maybe you could arrage for special darshan at the Tirupati Balaji temple. I have heard it is a sight to see. I had to miss it because the waiting for the darshan was almost 48 hours.
Have a great time.
You're welcome to use our mud-hut/holiday home on the inlaws farm; it's not exactly South, and it's not 4 star, but it sure is peaceful :)

Gotham, I am so happy for you and Candice that I am writing a third comment. Please go to YATRINIVAS, a restaurant in Bangalore to eat authentic northern Karnatak cuisine. They serve hot JAWAR ROTIS and vegetables and raita, rice and curry. Also please visit MTR(For typical southern Karnataka cuisine). Both these restaurants serve vegetarian dishes. Be ready to eat with your hand, you enjoy the food more!! Have fun in INdia. God bless.
Dear Geeta,
Amen to Jawar Rotis (Bhakri) and Yatrinivas. As I grew up in Hubli myself, I feel that restaurant is one of the best in Bangalore.
Regards,
Ravi Kulkarni
Ravi Kulkarni, it is a small world. I went to Karnatak Medical college, and lived in Hubli from 1968 to 1974. I am so happy to meet you on IB. Namashkaragalu.
This place lost it's high vibration, not just because of the commentors, that's what attracted them. It seems the bloggers were consumed by the dark side. Could be wrong maybe it is just a valley amongst peaks. Ego is rampant.
THEN THERE WERE THOSE THAT DID NOT LISTEN TO THE SOLUTION SIMPLY IGNORED IT.
Your comic book site is pretty cool though, and nothing wrong with making a profit.
That should of said bloggers "writings" not the bloggers themselves. Just don't seem to carry the light.
The site started out good and enthusiastically, bloggers from all over posted a lot and frequently. Now this site is overwhlemed by the commenters but those who blogged, have seem to be unable to withstand the free flow of negativism and disagreement.
That's life.
And its not like they were to be blamed because most of them got themselves at the most popular stage, with the criteria to be most genuine and true. Well, what are the odds this open site on the web with most freedom of speech would have persisted with the higher quality. None!
That's life
Gautham... great comics, and the graphics are superb!! wow! Absolutely, must convey my congrats at this gargantuan success!!
Applauding you and your team "loudly."
Software for you Design Team:
Must Have's!!
1) Picture It 2000
2) Irfanview
3) ULead Photo Express 2.0 SE(great lighting features and masques
4) Click & Design CD Labeller
5) Corel Draw-7
6) Canon 1600 - this printer software pkg is amazingly equipped to make patterns, quilting, etc...
Well, those are the 6 prog's I use to make my designs. In some of my designs, I use all 6 prog's!! lol Mostly, I use 1-3. Irfanview is great for watching files in click-quick slideshow of a folders contents, and for sizing, adding effects such as colour enhancement and buttons.
ULead is my personal fave though.. and Picture It.
When I design in CD-7; my working space is usually 3x4 inch's!! This is more of building a graphic, than manipulating an existing graphic. Finicky program, but amazing too!!

Oops, big sorries for typo'ing on your name Gotham...eeek!!
Very innovative. Maybe you can go on to make a movie too on one of the themes.
There is a new site called www.poetseers.org. It has a prose version- writespirit.net. That has a lot of inspirational stories where you may find some raw material for the comic venture.
In my view, one should also be on the lookout from contemporary real life stories of real people apart from looking at mythology. Just a thought.
Wish you all the best in the new venture. Hope you gain emotionally and financially.
hey gotham,
seems to me u got the best job a comic book lover could get......i checked out the site ...n the artwork is really.....in times to come it'll be easily compared with the DC n Marvel comics.....will this be released in india soon???

Hi G,
Given the opportunity to trash people involved in "revenue generating" schemes, (how dare they ?, spoilt star sons...but then if it had'nt been for my old man giving me a camera when I was 15, I would'nt be doing this stuff...) - I will...but I will desist this time..
I emailed your mate Shekhar about something I think he might be interested in, a novel to film / graphic novel adaptation..want to know more...?
Holidays in the South ? - if you are in B/Lore, go see Hampi / Vijaynagar, stay overnight (& experience random power failures, huge insects & Israeli backpackers...) - visit Kerala..I'd give you my relatives addresses in the village but I don't know you well enough...
As for the Sox, I must one of the three people in London who wears a Sox cap, everyone else seems to be a Yankees supporter...don't know why...& I don't even support them...sad...
Oh, and comics thing looks great...but I've said this before...
