Close encounters of the wrong kind

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi - August 16, 2006

It was a withheld number. The voice on the other end of the phone line sounded inoccous enough.
"This is Rajesh Madam.Your are Suchitraji na? "
"this is she"
I'ts for an advertisement for diamond jewellery madam. The party is very keen on you. Very big party-international madam. From out of town. It wont take up much of your time & it will be all done in one evening"

I was in the middle of painting a 6 feet by 5 feet canvas and not wanting to be disturbed, distractedly told the voice on the phone to call me the next day."very well madam" he said and hung up. I didnt pay much attention to it.

The next day my phone starts to ring incessantly. Seeing the number is withheld I ignore it but cant after the 15th time.See, many of my friends have withheld numbers & sometimes they text me in advance saying they are trying to call or that i should call them back. But sometimes they forget & so i answered the phone thinking it might be one of them.

"This is Rajesh again madam. I phoned you yesterday remember? Diamond jewelry advertisement.
Party is willing to pay 15 lakhs madam. You understand no?"

"excuse me-what are you talking about? where are you calling from & how did you get my number" i ask the seemingly harmless sounding voice. "are you from the advertising agency?"
"no madam. But party is very pukka-solid madam. I promise it wont take up much of your time. If you say yes i will come over right now madam-with 3 lakhs advance. Balance on day of shooting-which party wants on 27th of august madam-which is when they are coming into town."

I get a veryfunny feeling now. The hair at the back of my neck is starting to stand but i am still trying to handle the discomfort and retain my manners I politely tell him that I havent done advertising commercials for a while and not interested...I'm essentially an artist now &...
"no madam-party knows that. But see you did film with Anil Kapoor recently, your film Karma confessions and Holi is also releasing soon & they are very keen on you only madam. You dont even have to show them recent photographs. They want decent girl-you have very decent image madam. Your husband is also a big shot. Party is also international madam-you understand no? Party wants very clean girl madam. Balance 12 lakhs on day of shooting.Cash madam. Wont take up much time madam-I promise you. Just a few hours.

I'm getting irritated now and its showing in my voice but still not quite getting it...
"i dont accept cash payments" i stupidly mumble in panic and hang up to continue working on the canvas i had started yesterday

I cant ignore the ringing phone anymore,so pick it up with the firm intention of telling the man that if he calls again I will have to register a police complaint

"Dont get upset madam. I understand you are a very decent girl. Put party is very pukka & keen on you only madam. They are very big-international madam. They will give cash immediately madam. Please try to understand and agree. If you want i can negotiate to get you a higher amount-but for that I will take 10% madam. And if you say yes, I have many more parties... I know you are very decent girl madam. But ... party is very keen on you only madam and they are very pukka. they will keep their word where money is concerned and not much work for you madam. Just few hours...

There is a hum in my head now. evrything has gone into slow motion. Even the voice seems to be coming to me from another world. I feel like i am enacting a scene from a Madhur Bhandarkar film. You hear about these things happening but cant ever imagine that you will be at the receiving end of the stick. My heart is pounding with fear & with a voice shaking with rage I yell at the pimp
"Dont you dare phone me again. I said I am not interested & if you phone me once again I will trace your number & report you to the police...

"okay okay madam" he says nonchalantly"i understand you are not like that. I was also hesitating to call but party was so keen... anyway madam if you change your mind please take down my number..."

This was a few hours ago but my hands are still trembling as I am writing this. I wish i had taken his number down so i could trace the ba@^%#^%$ and report him to the authorities.
And I am left wondering... If this can happen to me(i have been a model, actress and singer for over a decade now & this has come as a huge huge shock) what about the girls who are in such a vulnerable economic and social position that they may not even have the courage to say no?
15 lakhs is an amount that can buy someone a one bedroom apartment in a Mumbai suburb... Its an amount people slave all their lives to earn and save up... Its an amount people kill for...its an amount much larger than what many people push their daughters and helpless family members into prostitution for...

The first thing I have to do is change my telephone number.
But before that I need to go and throw up.

Hi Suchitra,

Rs 15 lakhs (one-and-a-half-million rupees) by no stretch of the imagination is a sum to be sneezed at. You sure seem to have got your rupees coming easy!

But I wonder if you could’ve accepted this assignment on the condition that they pay the money to the NGO “Saathi” that you patronize. That sort of money would go a long way in bringing succor to those hapless women who have no one to turn to.

Sanjeev

quite distrubing Suchitra, to know that your privacy was invaded.... and it does give cause for concern, for the many women/girls/families; without the strength & courage to say NO to such a generous proposal...

I do hope, you will post a picture of your new painting when it's completed?

North

Hi Suchitra,

That was the worst of the experiences one can have.

I am sure that even while posting it down you must have felt very negative/angry.

I call that as fear of unknown. Someone out of the blue, unexpectedly, unknown, persistently pestering you in the middle of the work that you love so much. And this seems to be your first experience of this kind.

Is it? Some people can’t deal with people they don’t know, some people cant deal with people on the phone without a face to face meet, some people can’t deal with persistent people talking grossly.

I mean the guy might be very legitimate, but the approach was absolutely hopeless and he might have just forgotten about it but you still think about that incidence.

I have seen people dealing cool-ly with threat calls, just an attitude thing, I cant do that. I get nervous on such un-identified calls, because I don’t know how to react and then it just blows everything. But this can be controlled with conscious effort.

But I feel that you are known, you have a value associated to your face and your name, so there will be more such incidences in future. You should be tough enough to deal with these kind of people.

Am I too hard here?

I have this feeling about myself–

Why some lame guy should spoil your time over a few of phone calls, why someone else should control how I should react. I will decide how I will react.

I wish you good luck.

Ashutosh

That's so creepy.
I am sure he won't call you again.
Love,
Donatella

Suchitra, I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand. Was it someone who wanted you to do advertising? Or do you maybe mean that it was someone who wanted to pay you for sexual services?

You seem to be very upset about it- but why? In what way does this affect you? What does it have to do with you? If you are not interested, then you are not. But why such a strong reaction? Strong reactions come from inside, and we need to look and see what's causing them... it usually is some image of ourselves that we are clinging to, something we are denying. If you are searching for God, you won't be able to leave any stone unturned...

dear Suchitra

it seems strange to me that someone offering that much money would contact you with no priors, without contacting your agent or lawyer -- if this person were straight up, he would have gone through normal channels. your instinctive reaction feels right, to me. i hope Shekhar realizes how at risk you are, and puts more protection in place around you.

love, heather

Suchitra, when the hair on the back of your neck started standing, when you perceived a threat, your level of discomfort, tells me that this call was a threatening call, unpleasant call, potentially dangerous call. I wish, you had taken his number down and reported him. But I probably would have gotten off the phone asap too. I am sorry for you.God bless.

Suchitra,

I wouldn't worry, Just Be Aware.

In One sense you created it. To get your attention.

I once wrote two weeks non stop, very little sleep. I created a whole entire web site etc in a state of heightened awareness.

You painted for two weeks non stop, you were connected.

That part of your Self must be trying to get your attention, and heighten your awareness.

Perhaps you have forgotten something.

Keep divine intent and follow your impulses.

Do not act on fear thoughts, they are not from the source.

@ klumzyklutz,

You seem to have commented on the presumption that the gentleman caller was indeed offering an advertisement assignment. Should that have been the case, I am sure, Suchitra would have atleast considered the project.

If you did not have that presumption and you did, indeed, realise that the gentleman caller was pestering Suchitra as a middleman for a 'foreign party' customer for her sexual favours, then I sincerely hope you are not suggesting that Suchitra should have considered taking up the project just so that 'Saathi' could have gained that money?!!!???

Suchitra,
The power of money, the arrogance of the masculine and the perception of the film, modelling and advertising industry is such. It is perceived that everyone has a price for anything. You pay the price, you get the service.

It is common talk amongst the 'bollywood' male buffs out here in the US, discussing the 'price' of most, if not all, actresses (film or tv) who come across from India to take part in the musicc shows that are so popular.

As I said, the power of money, the arrogance and the perception. A confused Troika!

Suchitra
How incredibly disturbing... And as a mom, like you, of little girls, it is all the more stressful. You are so right that some girls are in a place that such an outreach, as horrible and gruesome as it is, is potentially life altering.
Ugh, I too have a bad feeling in my stomach.
Mallika

Suchitra.. a call to the police may help reveal the caller. They will contact the phone company. Any calls to your number would be accessible to them. This man, can then be interogated, on how he got your private number, and from whom?

Just to make aware--mom's also fear for their male children, in this perverted world of pedophilia running so rampantly worldwide, and getting much, much worse and gruesome. Male children are just as prone to abuse as girl children.

As such, I was very protective of my son.. and protected him just as much as I would have protected a daughter.

North

Suchitra, if you know someone in Canada or the USA, I would recommend you purchase a phone number/name viewer, called: InfoGlobe. It is a round, blue ball shape, with text that turns round and round. When your phone rings, look at the globe, it is showing you the name/number!!

I bought my son one last year, for his Birthday...maybe Christmas(6 weeks apart) and we had it set up in the main room. He left for college a few days ago, taking his infoglobe.. and boy, do I miss it!!

It can be bought at The Source Stores, formerly known as radio shack. They cost around seventy dollars(Canadian), but I got my son's on sale for fifty dollars!! : )

I am currently saving to buy myself one.. so far, I got five dollars saved.. at this rate, could take me a while! lol

You have to have "call viewing" service capability from your phone company..

North

Hi everybody. Thanx for writing in.
The pimp has not dared to call back and i feel much much better today.
Ashutosh
You are right-how i react is upto me and no one should be able to control that.
North
We do have caller id and everything in India :-)
however it is possible to get unlisted/withheld numbers from telephone service providers( i myself have one) which makes it difficult to track. But thanks for your concern and suggestion

Suchitra:

It is a very interesting post - just the other day I saw you discussing the question of "casting couch" with Archana on "Kandy Floss".

Was just wondering if you could have asked the pimp to identify the "party".... and blogged about him in public!! That would have served him right!! I mean for a person who was willing to pay $7000/hour ... he would be a fairly well-known "gentleman" in the NRI community anyways.. would be kinda important to know who he is.. isnt it?

Cheers,
Desh
Drishtikone.com

Suchitra,

I think a police complaint could still help. Unlisted or otherwise, I think it is still possible to get the calling number and location if taken up as a police investigation. It would also help in case the twerp persists.

How I long for the day when women realize that there is no "enemy". All these men we call names and who make us angry or disgusted... oh, what an illusion. How can any man humiliate a woman who is anchored in her power ?

Our power lies not in pointing fingers and declaring someone a monster. It lies in taking responsibility for the victim role we have collectively played, and realize that it is IN OUR OWN power to refuse to continue.

Not anger... no. Anger is a reaction to feeling abused, hopeless, weak, threatened. Anger means you think you can be abused. You don't have to become angry and "go to war" if you are completely aware of your power and worth. If someone, like the man in this story, has different values than yours, and still believes in the old image of women who let themselves be abused... let him go in peace, with a blessing. Put your efforts into findng your own responsibility and power, and help other women access that power. If all women wake up, there will be no victim around to abuse, and we will all, men and women, wake up from this illusion.

Don't teach your daughters to be victims... There is no agressor out there if you refuse to perceive yourself as agressed, if you refuse to accept the label of victim. Don't teach your children to propagate war by accusing the other sex of their own perceived weakness. Teach them that they are invincible, because that's what they are, through the power of their natural love for all people. We are all powerful beyond measure, if we stop pointing fingers and take a real look at who we are.

Suchitra, the nice thing about the globe, is you can see who is calling from across the room : ) This way, you don't have to put down your brush, when you are working, to pick up the phone, to see who is calling.

It is about the size of a ball of bread dough, and connects to the phone. It is a blue round globe, on a silver stand(attached) and the text goes around the globe. It is blue, and the text is lighted.

I hope you have regained a sense of safety, Suchitra.

Aurora, the only problem with teaching is; if the student isn't taking the class's, they don't understand the lessons.

North

Hello North,

I think that our children can't avoid learning the lessons we offer them by the way we live. Children are always conditioned early in life, and have no choice about it. The choice comes much later, when we start to become aware that we have been conditioned.

Hi Aurora....but, we cannot fool ourselves into believing that everybody has the capability to become self-aware. To believe such, would be premature; and somewhat then becomes judgemental of those, whom cannot achieve self-awareness; to be able to change childhood conditionings.

Can we ask a blind man, to describe a night sky?

North

Wherever I look, North, I see human beings and other life forms that are evolving toward more self awareness. Everyone in their own way. When you look at a tree in winter, you might think green leaves are an impossibility. But it's already happening, and there's no need to hurry :)

Everyone has moments of self-awareness; however, it takes a great deal more cognitive ability, to hone in on that ability; to keep it as a "constant."

I have spent a great many years, unconditioning childhood conditionings... not unlike anyone else, it is a struggle worth walking through...

I am not here, to be like you, Deepak or anyone else... I am only here, to parlay my experiences, much like anyone else.

IF I fall far below some "measurement" of intelligence or mental strength.. then that is what/who I am, and as such, I will continue....

North

Hmmm I don't know North may be right, not everyone (as in their character) by a vast number will become self aware.

I am starting to think a lot of "characters" on this planet are like filler people, conditioned units of behavior. That will never wake up in this dream.

I think there is a group that will, and they will inherit the earth and a new reality.

Then again, perhaps we can wake every one up with a lot of awareness and deconstruction...

The meek shall inherit the earth..

what do you believe this to construe, Richard?

to me.. it will be the ignorant to inherit the earth.. the intelligent one's seem to only exploit it, and its inhabitants...(wink.)

Are teachers exploiting people through teachings?

Do they do it because they care so much about me, you or anyone? no!! Teaching is a career, and as such, holds no merit of experience... only taught lessonings from others experience.

One must experience suffering, to understand it's grasp.

Does Deepak know what it's like to be like me? I should say not. Just like I have no perception of what it would be like, to be him.

But, at least, I do not try to convince him to be like "me" ....I give him the freedom, to be who his is.

Sadly, teachers do not give same...they expect/judge, and in doing so, condemn.

North

Hi RJ,

Apropos of your post # 9, I did indeed write what I wrote in my post # 1 on the presumption that the caller was making an offer for a genuine modeling assignment to Suchitra. I did mention the world “assignment” in my post, didn’t I? Perhaps because I was the first one to post, I didn’t think on the lines of the caller being a pimp. It simply didn’t cross my mind. I could never imagine that anyone, even with a withheld number, would dare so far as soliciting amorous favors from someone of Suchitra’s stature for a price!

But perhaps with what happened to Bipasha Basu on her recent visit to the US on the Indian Independence Day, I should’ve known better!

If indeed he was a pimp, the guy needs to be put behind bars.

Sanjeev

Well North every group has it's exceptions.

When I say meek I do not mean weak or quiet, or unintelligent. They are those that see the self or are at a level of consciouness that they tend not produce conflict. Those that do produce conflict may very well bring themselves to an end but the conflict that they create.

Mankind is a part of nature, and it always brings itself to a balance.

True enough, Richard; therefore we must accept the fact, that for every billion intelligent people, we have an equal billion non-intelligent people...

This is where I believe teachers, guru's; merely use their intelligence to exploit the one billion non-intelligents, and call it "career."

North

Hi North,

You seems to be carrying negative impression about teachers/gurus. All are not exploiters.

Cheers, Rohit

HI Rohit,

Yes, and it shall be my own undoing; You see, I am in the prime center of having walked away from fifty years of living in belief systems and "adapted behaviour" and from that bleeding, only show my open wound.. it is not pretty, I know, rebirth, never is..

therefor I am sorry I failed to make the mention, that not all guru's are exploiting the weak; and to re-state it this way; one must take as much care in choosing a belief, as they would in a family prized home and car... and what I have given witness to in my fifty years of life, is that there are many, many false prophets.

The only "true source" is our own wisdom...it is as close to our center, as we will ever become in this human evolution of mind and universe.

North

Rohit, I have read your blog, and feel embarassed I did not respond; just know.. I had not answers/questions...

you said everything about "center" of self..

I could add.. nothing more.

Wise beyond your years...

North

Sweet North,

Lovely to hear that. I'm just exploding with the feeling of love inside me right now.

Everything is an illusion wounds/gurus/paths/many years of waste....as you have mentioned that our own wisdom matters...so, just chill! ; - )

hugs, Rohit

Well then North we need to upgrade the people.

We can start with....

DMAE Bitartrate (dimethylaminoethanol)

DMAE is a memory booster substance common to a number of drugs that are known to stabilize cell membranes. Cell membrane degradation has been proposed as one of the prime mechanisms of aging.

Also, evidence suggests it may have benefits against the impulsive and disruptive behaviors caused by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

DMAE is a precursor to choline and acetylcholine. However, DMAE has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier faster than choline. It is the choline inside cells that is converted to phosphatidylcholine, used in the building and repair of cell membranes, especially in the brain.

In Europe, the drug Centrophenoxine, which combines DMAE with a synergistic chemical called p-chlorophenoxyacetate, is prescribed to boost cognitive function in the aged. It is likely that all the benefits of Centrophenoxine may be obtained more inexpensively from DMAE.

Help for Alzheimer’s
MAE is found in high levels in sardines and anchovies, but small amounts of it are also produced naturally in the human brain. DMAE is believed to work primarily by speeding the production of acetylcholine, a crucial neurotransmitter responsible for carrying messages between brain cells and from the brain to the muscles that control body movements.

Acetylcholine, a synthesized product of choline, is also involved in higher brain functions such as learning, recall, and memory.1 Animal studies show that taking DMAE can boost levels of choline in the brain,2 which in turn increases the body’s ability to produce acetylcholine, resulting in a corresponding increase in memory ability and potency. Evidence suggests that DMAE crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively than choline itself,3 enabling it to reach the brain and increase the brain’s choline levels more efficiently.

Calmer Kids
Parents of children with ADHD know firsthand the difficulty of getting their children to remain focused in a typical structured learning environment. Prescription drugs like Ritalin® (methylphenidate) have long been a common choice in the treatment of ADHD, but a growing number of physicians find Ritalin® and related medications to be potentially dangerous. As a result, more parents are investigating alternative (and more natural) therapies like DMAE, which have shown promising results and fewer potentially adverse side effects in a number of studies.

A prescription form of DMAE, called Deaner or Deanol, was already in use in the 1960s and 1970s for the treatment of learning and behavioral problems associated with shortened attention span.4 As early as 1959, treatment with DMAE was demonstrated to result in significantly improved test scores.5 A 1974 report on DMAE focused on two 10-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials involving 124 children with ADHD-related diagnoses. In one of these trials, positive results using DMAE were comparable to those using Ritalin®.6 Similar positive results were also seen in a 1975 study, wherein a placebo-controlled trial in 74 children found that DMAE at 500mg daily was as effective as methylphenidate.4

In 1983, the FDA insisted on additional studies to prove the effectiveness of Deaner. Because the clinical trials would have been more expensive than the product’s sales could support, Deaner was taken off the market. DMAE, however, has continued to be available as a natural nutritional supplement, and is a subject of more recent investigations into so-called “smart drugs.”

To A Higher Power
Given the ever-increasing pressures to achieve in modern society, it was only natural that a compound long used to treat brain dysfunction and memory disorders would be explored for its potential use as a memory enhancer and brain “booster.”7

Research has shown that DMAE’s cholinergic effects help produce brain chemicals such as acetylcholine that are necessary for mental sharpness.8 Some individuals accordingly report that DMAE supplementation causes a noticeable boost in their ability to concentrate. DMAE users also routinely report better memory (especially short-term memory), as well as improved focus, mental clarity, and sleep patterns, all of which may be particularly valuable for those who work in high-pressure or deadline-oriented environments.

Many nutritionally aware physicians routinely prescribe DMAE in combination with additional memory enhancers such as phosphatidylcholine, a dietary supplement. DMAE’s action as an acetylcholine precursor may help with the memory lapses that commonly occur with normal aging.

Healing Properties
Other aspects of the human aging process tend to be more visible than memory lapses. Treatment for sagging skin has become a multibillion-dollar industry, as growing numbers of older adults undergo expensive (and often recurrent) invasive surgical procedures. Recent studies involving a gel formulation containing DMAE have shown that the compound can increase skin firmness, even in younger subjects.9 Thirty healthy adults between the ages of 36 and 49 were given tests that measured changes in skin tautness after application with the DMAE gel, compared to placebo. Results indicated that the placebo had little or no effect on skin firmness, while the DMAE-treated skin exhibited greater tautness.9

Researchers offer two possible explanations for these results. First, DMAE may enhance water retention in connective skin tissue, causing the surface of the skin to tighten. The second, and more likely, explanation involves DMAE’s cholinergic feature, which enhances the skin’s ability to transmit acetylcholine. The neurotransmitter’s function in sending signals from nerves to muscles may promote a form of muscle tightening in the skin. It is important to note that although DMAE cannot fully reverse existing facial sagging, it may reduce its further progression. Some people report a cumulative effect with continued use of the compound.

Age spots, or “liver spots,” also may respond effectively to DMAE in cream, gel, or tablet form. Studies have shown that DMAE’s membrane-stabilizing properties reduced the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits inside cells.10 Lipofuscin, a brownish cellular pigment consisting of aggregated chunks of molecular waste formed by the inefficient metabolism of fatty acids, tends to occur in the cells of older people and is primarily responsible for age spots. DMAE has been shown to flush excess lipofuscin from affected skin cells.11

DMAE is a potent, site-specific free radical scavenger.12 An in-vitro study found that adding DMAE to myocytes (the heart’s pumping cells) protected individuals from cell damage resulting from ischemia, a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the heart, and from metabolic inhibition.13 Taken in the proper dosage, DMAE’s antioxidant effects can offer probable benefits of value in the maintenance of overall cellular health.

yo!!1 i like the way u think!!
