The last thing I'll ever be accused of is being a Bush lover. Okay - maybe the second to last thing, since I'll never EVER be called a Yankee lover.
And yet I find myself repulsed by some of the latest Busg bashers out there and the horribly salacious and in-poor-taste feature film that so many right wing extremists are hailing as "provocative" and "edgy" and "insightful" and "powerful." The film DEATH OF A PRESIDENT depicts the assassination of President Bush.
No I have not seen it so pile on because I am criticizing without even the full knowledge of seeing the film. But I have no desire to see the film because I think it's a cheap trick and one destined to actually hurt the cause of all those who oppose Bush's brutish tactics in his war on terrorism and his war on logic. Idiocy like this film simply fuels the venom of the left that portrays liberals as nothing but salaciously pandering to a reckless and illogical agenda. In this case, they would be absolutely right.
We have dealt in a very microcosmic way on this blog with the issue of free speech and taste. It's a fine line because complete lack of discretion and observation can result in chaos which can fuel the downfall of even a small cyber community. And yet at the core of the community is the principle ethic of free expression. Still, the freedom to express oneself doesn't necessarily mean one should abuse it or so carelessly reveal their own impudence.
In my humble opinion, DEATH OF A PRESIDENT is a cheap attention grabbing trick. Because in the end - in the false pursuit of what the so-called progressive film-makers claim was their mission - to make people think-they have actually made people simply shrug and overlook some of the critical issues of this administration that we should be discussing.

Gotham,
I agree, I found that disturbing, especially understanding how things like that can effect reality. It is like putting out a suggestion to be quite blunt about it, and imagining things can bring them about.
I wonder if they took the time to reflect in the movie the turmoil in the world markets that would occur, the possible vulnerabilites it would open up.
As much as I disagree, with certain approaches, and failures to implement other solutions to many problems, president Bush is obviously a normal FALLIBLE human being like us all, and he thinks he is doing right. Evil is where you know you are doing wrong and do it anyway.
The other point is, it is not all about Bush, he has a circle of influence, there are also corporations and industries that share in what happens.
IF THEY REALLY WANTED CHANGE
They could have done a movie about Bush getting stuck in an Elevator with Deepak Chopra FOR 2 hours.
NOW THAT I WOULD WATCH and so would everyone else.
Now the interesting thing about this......
Is everything is in Divine Order, including every change to come.
So somebody do a flash video of Bush and Deepak stuck in an elevator please, to offset this movie.
Thank you in advance...
The other thing is that we all have a collective reponsibility for the war, of course everyone would like to use "someone" else as a scapegoat, to take attention away from one's own faults.
If anyone was wondering, I would pay $30.00 to watch a real 2 hour unscripted, open topic conversation between Bush and Deepak, maybe they could do a fund raiser to help the children of war.
Hi Gotham,
Freedom is a tricky thing...there is no freedom without responsibility; the two cannot exist seperately. That's what often is forgotten in our society and the world in general. Basically there are no free rides. If you want the freedom to make as much money as can, then you also have to accept responsiblity of "loosing your shirt". You can say whatever you want about another, but then you are responsible for the impact of that statement ESPECIALLY if the statement turns out to be false. That's why we have slander and liable protection via our legal system.
There is a price for freedom of speech. I can say what I want in a public place, but I can't come into your house and say it. I can create "entertainment" advocating the murder of another, but if a disturbed person hears that and takes real action, I am responsible. It's best to pause often before opening ones mouth...even if the that mouth is a metaphor like here on the internet.
Peace,
Scott.

Dear GC,
I have to agree that the alleged depiction of the assassination of Prez Bush is in bad taste. Although I too haven't seen this film yet, but if it depicts or encourages Bush's assassination, it is in bad taste and dilutes the stand of his opponents. The standards of politicians have gone down so much all over the world that they sometimes themselves orchestrate attempts (failed, ofcourse) on their own lives to get public sympathy. People try to pull off unbelievably cheap stunts to grab attention, I agree.
Hope the American public is able to concentrate on the real issues and does not get taken in by such gimmicks.
Cheers!
Navin
PS: I was sent a great joke about the F word just now, which I'm going to post in the relevant thread.
