Beyond Delusion -- Ashtavakra Gita and Advaita

DK Matai - September 20, 2006

When we have met friends on various world tours of The Great Spiritual Masters, the paradox of "Afflicted with Delusion" has often come up. The Ashtavakra Gita has been universally cited as a step in the right direction

towards solving this challenge and going beyond delusion, because it presents the traditional teachings of Advaita (Non-Dualism) Vedanta with a clarity and power very rarely matched.

The Ashtavakra Gita, or the Ashtavakra Samhita (Ashtavakra's Collection) as it is sometimes called, is a very ancient Sanskrit text. There is little doubt amongst scholars in the East and West that it dates back to the days of the classic Vedanta period. The Sanskrit style and the doctrine expressed warrant this assessment. The text sees duality as the root of evil, asserts the importance of belief in sharing one's world view as unlimited or unbounded, and confidently proclaims the radical unity of "Universal Consciousness" and Its Creative Connections including humankind.

The obscure Ashtavakra Gita "Ashtavakra's Song" -- as distinct from the famous Bhagavad Gita "Divine Song" of Lord Krishna's within the Mahabharata -- is a divine discourse between the Perfect Master Ashtavakra (Eight times Knotted or Gnarled Guru) and Raja Janak (King Janaka), who later in his life became a Perfect Master. Raja Janak was the only one to have been born a Royal and to remain one throughout his life whilst dispensing the duties of King and Perfect Saint simultaneously. The Great Perfect Masters have all stressed the importance of this inspirational and true piece of work in their talks by way of a treatise on the true path -- a manual towards continuous self-improvement.

Since many have found the synopsis of the Ashtavakra Gita useful over the years, John Richards translation of the Chapter II follows, post the salutations and signature.

With love in His Name

Ashtavakra Gita

Chapter - II

Raja Janak said in acknowledgement to His Perfect Master Ashtavakra:

1. Truly I am spotless and at peace, the awareness beyond natural causality. All this time I have been afflicted by delusion.

2. As I alone give light to this body, so I do to the world. As a result the whole world is mine, or alternatively nothing is.

3. So now that I have abandoned the body and everything else, by good fortune my true self becomes apparent.

4. Waves, foam, and bubbles do not differ from water. In the same way, all this which has emanated from oneself is no other than oneself.

5. When you analyse it, cloth is found to be just thread. In the same way, when all this is analysed it is found to be no other than oneself.

6. The sugar produced from the juice of the sugarcane is permeated throughout with the same taste. In the same way, all this, produced out of me, is completely permeated with myself.

7. From ignorance of oneself, the world appears, and by knowledge of oneself it appears no longer. From ignorance of the rope it appears to be a snake, and by knowledge of it it does so no longer.

8. Shining is my essential nature, and I am nothing other than that. When the world shines forth, it is only me that is shining forth.

9. All this appears in me imagined due to ignorance, just as a snake appears in the rope, the mirage of water in the sunlight, and silver in mother of pearl.

10. All this, which has originated out of me, is resolved back into me too, like a jug back into clay, a wave into water, and a bracelet into gold.

11. How wonderful I am! Glory to me, for whom there is no destruction, remaining even beyond the destruction of the world from Brahma down to the last clump of grass.

12. How wonderful I am! Glory to me, solitary even though with a body, neither going or coming anywhere, I who abide forever, filling all that is.

13. How wonderful I am! Glory to me! There is no one so clever as me! I who have borne all that is forever, without even touching it with my body!

14. How wonderful I am! Glory to me! I who possess nothing at all, or alternatively possess everything that speech and mind can refer to.

15. Knowledge, what is to be known, and the knower -- these three do not exist in reality. I am the spotless reality in which they appear because of ignorance.

16. Truly dualism is the root of suffering. There is no other remedy for it than the realisation that all this that we see is unreal, and that I am the one stainless reality, consisting of consciousness.

17. I am pure awareness though through ignorance I have imagined myself to have additional attributes. By continually reflecting like this, my dwelling place is in the Unimagined.

18. For me here is neither bondage nor liberation. The illusion has lost its basis and ceased. Truly all this exists in me, though ultimately it does not even exist in me.

19. Recognising that all this and my body too are nothing, while my true self is nothing but pure consciousness, what is there left for the imagination to work on now?

20. The body, heaven and hell, bondage and liberation, and fear too, all this is pure imagination. What is there left to do for me whose very nature is consciousness?

21. I do not even see dualism in a crowd of people, so what do I gain if it is replaced by a desert?

22. I am not the body, nor is the body mine. I am not a living being. I am consciousness. It was my thirst for living that was my bondage.

23. Truly it is in the infinite ocean of myself, that, stimulated by the colourful waves of the world, everything suddenly arises in the wind of consciousness.

24. In the infinite ocean of myself, the wind of thought subsides, and the world boat of the living-being traders is wrecked by lack of goods.

25. How wonderful it is that in the infinite ocean of myself the waves of living beings arise, collide, play, and disappear, in accordance with their nature.

Dear DK,

It's so good to see you here.

Chapter 2 is even more beautiful and especially:

"Shining is my essential nature, and I am nothing other than that. When the world shines forth, it is only me that is shining forth."

Love,

Donatella

Dear Donatella

God Bless! and I trust you are fully healed. It hurt me so much to see you in so much pain.

What have we got to show for ourselves when the end time comes other than our humanity?

With love

Dear DK,
How wonderful it is to read your post. I am so happy that you have come back to share at intentblog!

I have a 'thrist' for living. In #22, I see the body as an incredible gift. It is temporary, yes. But, what an incredible way to experience the beauty of nature, and ourselves and others. To see, to touch, to love. To Live. Freedom from bondage, for me, is knowing/experiencing the Oneness, which contains the changing. The changeless. It is a fullness - of Everything!
With love,
~ Kate

Dear Donatella,
I am sorry to know you were hurting.
I offer my love and care to be part of the healing balm.
Thanks for all your sharing at IB.
With love,
~ Kate

Hi DK,
I'm with Donatella, it's good to see you here.

You mention that the text sees "Duality is the root of evil." I can see that in the sense that without evil there would be no contrast and so no experience...
But then, duality would be the root of good too, wouldn't it?

I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud.

"When the world shines forth, it is only me that is shining forth."

Who is the "me" who is shining forth in this passage?

I've been thinking a lot lately about how my attachment to my perspective/s creates pain for myself and others. This has been a time of sadness and deep reflection for me. I feel rather lost.

Love, Kristin

Dear DK, Kate and Kristin,
What else is there besides friendship? It's the greatest healer. Thank you for your sweet and friendly words!

One of my favorite mystics, Paramahansa Yogananda said that friendship is the highest form of love because it's not compulsive, and it's therefore deeper and more sincere.
Love,
Donatella

Dear Kate, thank you for your thoughts.

Dear Kristin, duality here is referred to in the context of seeing ourselves as separate from the rest and indeed the whole of the creation including the universe. The "me" is the universal consciousness, the great connection which binds all. My Spiritual Master has always said: Time for reflection is good, feeling lost happens sometimes, it is the beginning of the awakening, and then as one goes into one's within, the universal consciousness guides us forward.

Cara Donatella, grazie per tutto! Ci rivedremo presto! Ciao...

With love to all

Dear DK,

Glad to see the rumor was an exaggeration, that you had left Intentblog.

Your enlightened sharings are a welcome delicacy on the spiritual menu of this “Restaurant at the end of the Internet.”

While the dress code here is not black tie, DK the patrons bring such diverse appetites, conversations, and suggestions to the table that it is a true microcosm of our larger world. What better place for show casing your champagne and caviar.

Thanks a lot for still being here!

Kind Regards,
Stan

P.S
Regards also to your secratary we miss her.

Dear DK,

It is nice to see that you posted something of great insight. Your absence was noticed.

You know if we really wanted to change the world.

Those that could, would chip in a few dollars, and print that on the back page of the New York times or the Wall Street Journal. With a URL to go to. Maybe creat a little mystery behind it.

It would certainly raise some questions causing some to seek and perhaps lead many down a path.

I don't think it would cost but $5,000 dollars. But you know what I think? Ego would do it's best to create excuses to not do so.

Best I can tell there is no one of wealth that isn't beholden to the ego.

Then again Enlightenment could be an asymmetric threat, if the current systems are not upgraded.

We could also say expanding awareness could be an asymmetric threat. Which when you think about it, no one has control over any more and it is happening at a rapid pace.

For example, how do we handle the idea that becuase of technology there is not a job for everyone?

I think it is a common assumption that there should be a job for everyone. What happens is we create a lot of artificial jobs to fill the gap.

I bet no one has ever stood up in congress and asked that. Is there actually a "real" job for everyone? Or better does everyone really need to work 40 hours a week?

How many jobs depend on all the evils of the world?

Donatella,

Glad to see you are happy and content amongst friends.

We run the gamut of emotions here,

just like we do in our 'real' lives.

Going 'deep' with friends will eventually

land us all in the 'end zone'.

May we touch down and pray...

Thank you Lord for my friends

who have feet and balls!

.

Stan,

You made my stomach growl

but not my gumption.

Fish eggs? Yuck!

.

Kate,

My feet are wet!

Do you have any idea where this sand came from?

The shells are wonderful though, thank you!

.

Kristin,

"Lost" is doing another season on the teli.

Do you watch it or write it?

Maybe we could co-star,

I feel like I belong there, too.

.

D.K.

Yes! Hello...welcome back!

Intermissions are necessary,

"Om"-missions cannot always be helped,

although they may be looked over for imperfections,

and drawn in or expanded to size.

Let us see where you fit in....Hmmmm...

My judgement seems to have been mis-placed

at the moment...suit yourself!

Dear DK,

You know I was thinking there might be a solution.

I would bet that there are many that are silent because they fear being attacked or losing their wealth. They really want to do something but they do not want to become a target. I understand this issue and don't really judge myself anywhere because of it. We all remember the hell Oprah got out through with the cattle industry.

So I AM thinking, what if I allow all of those that WISH to bring change, to anonymously donate to support various intelligence operations and awareness campaigns. Then no one needs to fear.

What do you think?

Next my plan to engineer ego and fear out of the system, to follow.

Infinite Regard
Richard

I have two projects, well actually many.

These two projects one conceived over a decade ago, the other spawned by events here on this very blog in the last two weeks, are designed to engineer fear and ego out of our systems.

#1 Anonymous peer review.

This allows academics and experts, authenticated and certified yet still anonymous to publish and review withou worry of persecution, riducule or threat. Later when the truth is accepted they can reveal their identity.

#2 “Self Government”

I was sitting here a week or so ago, and the idea came to mind, actually a book that I had for a long time. “Roberts Rules of Order” the standard guide to parliamentary procedure. The thought was what if I could build this functionality into the Internet. The fact is I can, I have already figured out how to overcome the obstacles, mainly related to security and identity. If we could move this to the Internet then all could participate in “SELF” government.

In some ways it is already working, and what I wrote below applies to Self Government above.

About a year ago I wrote and actually mentioned here on IntentBlog and on my blog http://iamblogging.net/archives/2005/12/the_creme_princ.html

The "Crème Principal" cream (the best rises to the top) by "word of link".
By Richard Thomas

In the planets recent past a few controlled what people could see, hear, and know. The few determined agenda and focus.

The internet has given birth to an autonomous system that determines what is good and what is important without bias, it gives birth to a natural agenda and focus.

It is a collective function of the world audience; each individual choice creates the collective choice.

The Internet provides natural mechanisms by which those things deemed worthy by popular vote are raised up. There is no special interest determining what is important or what is “good” we are collectively deciding via an autonomous system. In fact it is computers and algorithms that make the determination of what is of value, importance and quality.

Each individual votes with a link or reference regarding what is of substance and intelligence filtering out most special interest propaganda and ignorance, promoting that which may be suppressed or ignored by the conventional media.

Whether it is a blog, a website or an email each individual makes a contribution to the collective thought and the ranking of information and thought.

Not only that as we do right here many minds merge as one evolving and refining concepts and ideas, improving them. The power of many minds compared to one mind. I call it snowballing intelligence.

It could be viewed as expression of the collective will. Since it cannot be isolated to a single individual no one can be persecuted.

DK: Ditto to the previous posts--you were greatly missed--and I very much like Dr. Horatio Peppers as well; what a classic name--something of a name I'd expect for an epic character who is the consummate conqueror of unchartered oceans' one who discovers "new lands"--esp. taken in the context that the term "land," in the Bible, is synonymous with one's state-of-consciousness; or awareness.

Your contributions, particularly from the great Spiritual texts, are part of the incalculable educational value of the Intentblog.

Thank You for continuing on with us--Dave

Caro DK,
Non sapevo che parli cosi' bene l'italiano.
Grazie e a presto.
Donatella

Dear Keith,
That's so nice...Thanks a lot.
Love,
Donatella

Keith,
It's wonderful to awaken into a dream, where you find the surf and sand is beckoning you, to put away your 9 to 5 day.

Come discover how good it feels to let sand sink your feet at the water's edge, and every where along the shore line are exquisitely lovely seashells. You decide to take the plundge, and connect with the gulf's clear and pristine water.
You bob up to the surface, waterdrops covering you, and a sunlight of beams spotlighting you.

Just your luck, I am walking by - and see you there, just as you emerge, soaking wet, dripping water, arms, legs, feet. Oh, my a sight!

May I offer you my towel, if you wish to dry off ...

~ Kate

Dear DK,

Yesterday i was smiling back at your picture here on your contributor´s page and ..... here you are already :)

Greetings to all from sunny Holland :)

Princess Kate,

You are correct, I have yet to even touch

the Gulf's water with one toe.

Upon waking this morning, that toe was cramping,

causing my leg to rise and like a needle,

it was pointing in a south-easterly direction.

It is better now that my eyes have seen

an invitation to a dream that may be coming!

Thanks anyway for the towel.

I'm a slow-dripper, day tripper,

morning coffee sipper, Mmmmm...

You warm me up! Luvs, Keith~

Dear Keith and DK,
Yes, lost is part of the process. I didn't know it was on television though. But I suppose that's good. I reminder that it's all part of life and not to take it so seriously.

Dear DK,
Now I am clear what you were referring to with regards to duality being the root of evil. I like to think of it as: forgetting God (and who we really are) is the root of evil. "Remembrance of God is purity, nothing else." When we see God in everyone, that is the Ultimate Truth. This is the value of meditation and why I believe it can be a key to transforming the world and dreaming the new humanity Deepak and the ANH envision.

Love, Kristin

Thank you, DK, what a SPLENDID feeling to read the Ashtavakra Gita today!!! It makes me want to daaance as this universe :))))

Stan- you're funny :D:D I really like DK's secretary too :)

Donatella- how can you hurt when you can sing in that lovely language whenever you want :)

Dear Aurora,
It was just one day. I can't hold a grudge. What can I do?
Love,
Donatella

"This is the value of meditation and why I believe it can be a key to transforming the world"
Kristin

Dear Kristin,
That is precisely why I teach meditation.
Love,
Donatella

Donatella, you're smiling :))) You have a beautiful smile, even brighter after a whole day of frowning!
How do you say "shining is my essential nature" in Italian?

Aurora,
"La luce e' la mia vera origine"

And in Swedish?

I'll try another translation which I like better.

Luminosa e' la mia vera fonte

"Min innersta natur är att skina" :))

Si, ((( Donatella))), la luce e'la nostra vera origine.

I liked the one with "the light" too!
I'd love to hear all the whole text in Italian, I think I'll do a search. The same music, different instruments.

Dear DK, Here is a poem about Ashtavakra Gita.

The Song of the Eight Whorls-Knotted Head

On Ashtavakra Gita, Chapter 1, Verse 1

how to be happy?
asks Senor Matai,
and he himself finds the answers
in the song of an ancient
well-fed guru,
sitting cross legged
on lion-skin,
in a dirty langoti,
(not even a lungi)
his body smeared with
cow-dung ashes,
his hair dirty and long,
knotted in eight whorls
over his head,
chakras and lines and
dots dotted on his forehead
in the paste of sandalwood.
his necks adorned with beads
of seeds of some holy tress where
Krishna flirted and romanced
with one hundred milk
maids in the cool shades
of their foliage along the holy
river Jamuna flowing from Himalayas
down to Banares and merging with
holy Ganges and then merging with
the ocean as soul merges with Him.

says the guru:
to be happy is to be free.
lose your senses -
not senses of common sense and horse sense
under your unknotted-hair dimwitted head -
but senses of touching, tasting,
hearing, seeing and smelling.

touch nothing.
it will send sensations sometimes
of pleasure, of soft lovey-dovey feelings,
when your hands are on the
soft round things
that beautiful young women have.

taste nothing.
so eat nothing. drink nothing
and starve to death.

hear nothing.
for those love talks of lovers
you hear in Indian movies
will keep you awake all night,
dreaming of romance
hiding under the bowers.

see nothing.
close your eyes.
all darkness, no light.
see no cruelty, no nudity
no suffering, no pains.
(it was Buddha’s bane)

smell nothing.
no fragrance of red roses,
no fragrance of white jasmine.
not even the smell effervescing
from a bottle of Burgundy wine.
not even the smell of the
dung of cow – the holy mother –
that sustains your life.

thus totally shut from the
world and dying,
you will gain all knowledge,
you will lose all passions,
you will get all liberation.
you’ll be fully free and happy
for you will be all dead in your body
and your soul will finally merge
with the Super-Duper Daddy –
all consciousness,
super-duper consciousness!

all nonsense.
all super-duper nonsense.
all garbage regurgitated,
savoured by the ancient minds.

DK, I was very sad when I did not find your posts on the IB. I missed them. I am so happy they are back. I admire your integrity, your choice of topics, your interaction with the people who comment. With the Grace of GOD may I always find your posts on this weblog. OM NAMO NARAYANA.

Thank you DK for posting this. When I think of ASHTAVAKRA, I am always puzzled by these questions. He had eight physical handicaps, or disabilities. He was an outstanding scholar, and a very evolved sage. The people who think, our appearance is the result of our previous life KARMA, would interpret his disabilities as the result of inappropriate application of free will in a past life. But I wonder, if brave souls come to physical Earth with disabilities to perfect faster for God. I do not have an answer to this question, and would appreciate any comments.

Sage and king Janaka, the father of Seeta Matha, is another historic person I absolutely love and admire. Yogananda Swamiji writes that king Janaka came back as GURU NANAK!!

Wayne Dyer, the wise spiritualist says,"I, we, you, he, she, it, they are all one". When I realise the essence of this sentence, and understand it to be true, and change my behavior accordingly, my life time on Earth has been fruitful.

DK, may God bless you. Thank you.

Donatella, I love your smile too. Please smile a lot. Love and God bless.

My guru--whose name shall remain anonymous--is my servant (he had to explain this to me, because I didn't know it). He performs this service as an expression love, my fully-conscious, laughing bondsman.

It is written, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing."

I guess my guru takes that passage of the Bible literally. (He's always been so literal.)

The incisive question for me to ask is, how do I treat my servant? Am I imperious? Ungrateful? Do I humiliate him? Am I impatient?

Or do I think of him in the morning during my prostrations?

Furthermore, do I have the vision to recognize others who have--with eyes wide open--indentured themselves to me for our spiritual growth at critical times? (Said more simply, "can I see my servants?")

Can I recognize this sort of humility with discriminating vision? Can I actually SEE love? Can I SEE myself loving?

Can I return my guru's love with gratitude?

Can I reply with proper consideration to what he's asked me?

Dear Geeta,
Thanks. Everything you say is always so kind.
Lots of love,
Donatella

Dear Aurora,
It sounds beautiful also in Swedish.
Love,
Donatella

Enjoy the blessing of teaching. :)
And learning.

DK Matai, on an unrelated tack, I seem to think that in the business world, we commonly confuse history with evidence.

On a database server, event logs are filled with "history".

It seems to me that it's really evidence, and it takes someone to see its continuity or its relationship with something else to formulate history.

Maybe that's how Google got so successful on the computer desktop! Maybe Microsoft blundered because they didn't make the distinction between evidence and history.

Dear Kristin,
Thanks. You too :)

Dear Dana,
Yours is an interesting point.
Philosopher Hans Gadamer said: "In fact history does not belong to us; but we belong to it."
Love,
Donatella

Thanks, Donatella.

My post assumes that if you can't find it, it isn't history.

Dear Dana,
I actually believe that our consciousness is not entirely shaped by our time (or history), but our consciousness is eternal and pure.
I hope it makes sense.
Love,
Donatella

Yes, it does. And there may be a way for your assertion to be amalgamated with business intelligence.

DK Matai is probably very adept at doing integrating stuff, so I am curious to know what he concludes from your post!

(::)

Dear Stan, whilst I appreciate your welcoming sentiments, please note that I do not have any taste for what you refer to because I am a teetotaller and vegetarian by choice! And 42 to you too, it was one of my favourite books many moons ago!

Dear Richard and Keith, thank you for your kind words. Rome was not built in a day... and neither will world peace and unity. However, as an optimist and believer in a benign and loving Universal Consciousness or Infinity, that time will also come... Snowballing intelligence needs checks and balances especially when it gets exploited for negative purposes... Information Intelligence is not always benign unless coupled with a massive margin for error, ie, decision making forgiveness... from ruthlessness towards "Ruth" or Mercy...

Mia Cara Donatella, Amo "Luminosa e' la mia vera fonte." E' questo possibile? "lucidare sono la mia natura essenziale", molti ringraziamenti!

Beste Mieke, Dank u voor uw vriendelijke woorden, Liefde

Dear Kristin, I am personally not capable of offering any wisdom whatsoever! The wisdom you appreciate is that of The Great Spiritual Masters, at whose lotus feet I have had the privilege to sit and contemplate the glory of universal consciousness, by example.

Kära Aurora, tacka dig för din sort uttrycker. Detta är älskvärt: "Min innersta natur är att skina." Förälskelse

Dear WW, what you shoot from the hip be sure to wait as it boomerangs back! things are not always what they seem and mercy with words and nobility in thought are welcome...

Bahut Pyari Geeta, kabhi to yeh dil kahin mil nahin pate, kahin to nikal aaye janmon ke naate, bahut pyar sahit

Cara Donatella, ognuno li ama!

Dear Dana, my Spiritual Master His Great Holiness, Sant Ajaib, once wrote, "Das na das O Premi Si, Nirmal Parvane Sarde ne": "He was no Servant, He was Love struck, just as the Pure fireflies burn merrily!" Thank you for reminding me of His Majestic words. On the subject of history and evidence: there are always mutiple histories as there are multiple observers. For example: the history expressed by the victor and that expressed by the vanquished. What follows in-between the evidence points by way of perspective and context shapes the mood and colour of the narrative much more than the facts. Donatella's words are worth thinking about to go beyond history, ie, going beyond judging write and wrong "I actually believe that our consciousness is not entirely shaped by our time (or history), but our consciousness is eternal and pure. My Spiritual Master, His Holiness Sant Ajaib, once wrote: "Jam bhare hath sab de, mera una jam, saki tera galat vateera kinjh samjhan?" [Everybody's glass appears full, mine is half full, how do I understand the pourer's inept pouring?] Business Intelligence or State Intelligence needs to understand multiple points of view and perspepectives, thereby recognising that evidence in the context of humanity is a relative affair! Here the ancient prayer comes into full context, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference."

Apologies for all errors and omissions.

With humility, I remain,

Your servant

Dear DK: If it has Crude Insights, it should be deleted!

Yes Yes that Crude, before refining is acceptable but generally WW's poems can be fatally crude, obnoxious. "Damned dimwits" not sure if it is any good communication.

Thx!

Dear Dk,

Very sorry for suggesting, that your spiritual delicacies might be akin to wine and fish eggs. Please let me re-phrase it.

DK, what better place than IB for displaying your Angelica Sinensis Tofu Tidbits.

I will take my towel and go quietly now.

Kind Regards,

Is it just me, or is this whole blog completely delightful??? Spiritual insights at their best, humor and more humor, nobody can move without affecting the rest, the space is filled with threads relating everyone to everyone else's smile :))))

Dear White Wings, I love your sincerity. It is truly beautiful to see how real your perspective looks, seen from your point of view. You are sincerely trying to do everyone here a favour, as you see it. When I visit your world, I enjoy your poetry, because you can be really funny :))) How surprised you might be some day to discover that there are more worlds than the one you see...

Dear DK, may I ask, what is your mother tongue?

Dear Stan, all is well!

Dear Aurora, having spent too many years travelling, I am what my environment makes me! I must confess that I do not speak, read or write any language well.

Warm well wishes to all

DK: I was just drinking some OJ when I read your confession, "I do not speak, read or write any language well."

I nearly spit up a mouthful of OJ all over my montior at that one!

You are one of the most eloquent, sophisticated, and yet "humble" writers I've ever encountered--anywhere, and at any point in my life!!!

Do you have any other "good jokes?!" Dave

Dear Aurora,
I agree with your post # 47.
WW has been able to make me feel,
oh,
I will tell him,
someday,
all that his writing has revealed

It seems a fountain of refreshing cool water has me immersed in the fullness of living, and lately, it's - heavenly. Ah, I don't want this experience to pass!

Dear Dave,
You are in luck. I have some Bounty paper towels handy - just in case, of an OJ spill.

Dear DK,
I agree with Dave.
Your voice is lyrical and
eloquent.

Let's share in a glass of sunshine. May I pour? (sorry dear Dave, my turn at this :))

Dear Dave, sorry about the orange juice spill! Your graphic detail was enchanting.

I never lived in one country for more than a few years as a child and it had a huge impact manifest as my incapability to understand nuances in most languages thrown at me over the years.

I am a survivor of languages and cultures, who firmly believes that the only permanence in this world is God's love and the love we share with each other as human beings. All else is just transitionary and facile.

Dear Kate, I am drinking the glass of sunshine which you so kindly offered. Cheers!

With love to all

Dear DK, in that case, I don't need a web-translator to tell you that I admire the way you follow the path of shrinking the ego, with a teasing and cheerful wink! You have certainly made room for a lot of kindness and compassion in your interactions. Thank you so much :)

Dear heavenly Kate, enjoy being immersed in the fountain of life!

Dear Aurora,

thank you for your thoughts.

I must confess, I have been thinking about how to answer your question without making my life history too obvious.

Although, with no particular origin in Persia, having had our lives disrupted by the Iranian revolution in 1979, my family has been circumspect about all of this, in terms of languages etc.

To answer your question directly, I like learning languages because at times when there has been a dearth of being able to make ends meet, the languages have acted as a saviour for our family -- so I see them as a life line. As a minority, I also found it easy to build trust with different nationalities across Europe using language as a vehicle to build friendship.

. Swedish and Finnish were part of the design engineering work I did for the Scandinavian Group OY Helvar.

. German and French were part of the European engineering degree courses at Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Paris, which complemented my studies at Southampton, England.

. Swiss German came from early work at Zurich and more latterly.

. Italian is a result of classes during my PhD at Imperial College in London and also a monastery near Florence and Siena which I have chaired called San Fedele.

. Dutch was studied as a result of exposure to Eindhoven post graduation.

. Persian and Arabic came from the time my father worked in the Middle East and I was growing up.

. Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu have come from home and early study and poetry interludes in India.

. Latin and Greek were studied as foundations for European languages.

. Panjabi/Gurubani was espoused by one my Spiritual Masters, so I had to learn it in order to understand what he was saying.

Despite all these languages, what have I learnt. I do not speak, read or write any of them well. But they are very useful to build friendships and yes, they have done that marvellously, thereby enriching our lives.

With warm wishes

Dear DK,

my question had the simple intention of returning the kindness you show to so many here by adressing them in their language. And see - what a beautiful, enriching response from you!

To me, you are neither your personality nor your background, but it is no less impressing to see the road your soul has guided you through. I think, dear DK, that you have made the most of the road mapped by your destiny and you have truly kept your awareness on what is important. It is not an easy task, and we all grow when one of us grows. So, once again, thank you.

Dear DK and Aurora,
My head is spinning from reading what DK shared about the languages he has studied.
Like DK, I feel that languages help create a bridge with other people and lead to both deeper understanding and wonderful friendships.

My life-long love for languages is only increasing. I am only trilingual, but I confess that I have studied 7 languages and I am still struggling with some of them, and especially with Sanskrit. Of course, it seems unlikely that Latin, classical Greek and Sanskrit could be used today to converse with anyone other than a supercilious scholar, but these languages have helped me to understand all the other languages.

Thanks to both of you for a lovely discussion.
Love,
Donatella

Donatella: Yes, I agree, DK's been a real slacker at getting a respectable resume together in this life!

I've studied five, including a bit of American Sign Language now, and don't remember anything of the bunch--I had life-saver of a friend I nicknamed St. Johnny, a Holocaust survivor--a Romanian Jew, who at 60, could still speak seven languages quite fluently.

I understand Jesus became proficient in five languages by his seventh-to-eighth year, and then several more along the way--but DK's abilities......I haven't seen a list like that--although I know he's saying his more the Jack-of-Al-Trades with the languages, rather than being the Master of any.

But Dk, I sure have to say it seems like you've mastered the English language better than 99.9% of those who've had even the greatest training and educational opportunities with it. Dave

Dear Aurora, dear Donatella, dear Dave,

It all boils down to "Imagine" by John Lennon:

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

With love and well wishes

DK: I find that John Lennon's song, and life, are more profoundly impactful in this day-and-age than I think even he could have hoped for, or "Imagined," at the time he first brought this one through to the world--if he's already incarnate again, I hope, whoever and wherever he is, he is the benefactor of his own magnificent contributions to the betterment of this world.

It must make him smile, wherever he is, to be able to tune into the sound of this song--it is hard to "Imagine" how many times, and in how many places, it is concurrently being played every day. Dave

....and DK: I know this is off-the-topic here, but would you spell out your full name again--curious as to what it means, if you know? (per Kanika's "name" blog)--Dave

Caro DK,
E' proprio una bella canzone. Con la tua presenza qui, hai portato molta luce. Piu' di quanto tu possa imaginare. Sei come un balsamo per tutti.
A presto,
Donatella

Dear David,
That is a great song and, although it sounds idealistic, I do think that all people will be united one day.
Love,
Donatella

We are all dreamers, dear ones. We just don't know that we can choose what we want to dream. Waking up means willingly dreaming your best dream - right now, our best dream is perfectly expressed by John Lennon. Just imagine what we can dream after that :))))
