Deepak Chopra - September 25, 2006
There was general rejoicing last week when Wal-Mart announced that it was reducing the price of 150 generic drugs to as little as $4 a month, a move quickly followed by Target and K-mart. Forecasters in the drug industry predict that this move will pressure other huge retailers to lower their prices and expand the range to 400 generics or more. Good news all around.
Yet beneath the surface lies the fact that the average senior in America is taking 7 prescription drugs. That's not a step in the right direction, no matter how cheap the price. The field of mind-body medicine has reached the stage where we know a great deal about preventing disease through means far less toxic than prescription drugs. This knowledge isn't being taken advantage of nearly as much as it should be.
American medicine should be helping people build a mind-body bridge. The human body contains enormous wisdom, and we could be tapping into it. For example:
--Meditation and stress management are effective in reducing blood pressure.
--Meditation also reduces pain as well as how often people get sick.
--Psychotherapy has prolonged survival rates in studies of late-stage breast-cancer victims.
--Psychiatry has been shown through MRIs to alter and improve the same areas of the brain that respond to psychotropic drugs like Prozac.
--Cognitive therapies have restored brain function lost to senile dementia.
--Stroke victims and patients with muscular dystrophy have been shown to make amazing gains in restoring lost function through guided exercise therapies.
--Mental techniques as simple as post-hypnotic suggestion have been successful in weight loss.
--Chronic back pain has been shown to respond to exercise, often better than to surgery.
Taking all this into account, an old person with high blood pressure, an aching back, moderate memory loss, and a pot belly could remedy all these conditions without taking a single drug. Shouldn't that be our goal?
I mention exercise as part of restoring the body's wisdom because it stimulates what the body naturally wants to do--remain strong and balanced. Yet how many physicians even consider such therapies? Far too few. This is particularly egregious in the case of older patients, who are routinely sent home on medicines for hypertension and elevated cholesterol that simply aren't necessary. We need more research to follow up initial findings that the elderly are not helped by attempting to give them the blood pressure and cholesterol readings of 25-year-olds or even 45-year-olds.
The sad fact today, as twenty years ago, is that the average physician remains a pill pusher, giving little thought to the enormous benefits of prevention. Since prevention is largely a lifestyle issue, and changing your lifestyle involves the mind, it can be rightly said that America's biggest health challenge is to keep the mind-body bridge strong. Every report indicates that we aren't doing that. Prevention, the watchword of the Eighties, has given way to a growing reliance on drugs that isn't healthy in the long run, or ever.
Love,
Deepak

Thank you for this blog. This situation is not only true for the USA, but also for many, if not most other Western countries, including the one I live in.
I have been thinking intensely, especially these last few days, about ways to do something about the situation, because something must be done. For me, the challenge is to manage to break through the resistance of doctors and other allopathic healthcare workers, because they will soon fall under the burden of their increasing amount of work, and the results won't come unless we all learn to cooperate instead of excluding each other. I know doctors who are secretly tired of the status quo, I have contacted them with ideas, and I hope to soon see some kind of cooperation happening inbetween what has been called "alternative" and "main" medicine.
The good news is that we already have a term for what is in the making. It is called "integrative medicine" and as I see it, it is the solution being born.
Deepak and all,
I am inspired by this post. I have experienced the body's natural tendency to return to balance when systems are out of synchronization.
If every physician gave patients a chioce between pills/surgery and exercise/diet/meditation with advice that both routes have good results, I wonder which course would be more often chosen.
Dear Deepak,
Thanks for a great post.
I think the main reason that doctors have become "pill-pushers" (as you so aptly namped them) is purely due to the western mind set that compartmentalizes everything. If your knee hurts, treat the knee; back hurts fix the back; High blood pressure? treat that. I have seen so many surgeries to repair backs for example, that could have been completely avoided by simply taking up a gentle yoga practice to improve the strength of the back and/or balance the muscle structure.
On a deeper level, it's my belief that the body is the unconscious mind (as a matter of fact, I think Candice Pert has a book with that title). In other words, the body becomes the storing place for all of our "junk": the emotions that we repress; the times when we know we should speak, but keep silent; And conversely, the times we should be silent but speak. The muscles store "memories" of physical and psychological trauma etc. Exercise physiologist Scott Sonnon calls this "fear reactivity" and he believes (as do I) that certain types of movement can release these reactivities. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais was absolutely brilliant and developed whole healing modalities based upon proper movement. His works mirrors Scott Sonnon's in many ways.
Modern medicine too has become compartmentalized. We now have specialists in every field of medicine. There are fewer and fewer doctors that are healers, rather they are scientists whose interests lie in one part of the body or one healing modality.
The next revolution in medicine (and I believe that it has begun) will be one that takes the whole person into account. It will have great modern science coupled with the people that deeply understand the connection between the mind, the body, the spirit and the enviroment.
We've really tried for decades to improve the world by adding more highways, more building; tried to simplify our lives with faster modes of travel and communication. Jet planes and cell phones are nice, but they have also polluted our enviroment and degraded our "down time". Modern drugs are amazing, but they are a bit like a foreign species of fish entering a lake: the new species (the drug) enters the lake (our mind/body system) and devours all many of the staple fish (our natural ability to heal ourselves), then we introduce another species to control the first species (more drugs), etc. This leads to a complete break down of the whole system and a contstant need for outside intervention in order for the lake to exist and live.
Having said all of that, I see change happening all around now. There is a slow acceptence of alternative healing happening within the medical community. I think it's a good sign.
Peace,
Scott.
Great post Scott, thanks! Beautiful metaphor with the new species of fish! Otherwise, I use to compare modern drugs with canons shooting a canonball to get rid of a mosquito :)
What can we do about it?
Sorry, but I want to post off-topic specifically on this , "good news all around" position on this post.
In the old days, price was determined by more than just getting the lowest one. Commonly, you looked your manufacturer in the eye as you determined a price. His or her kids went to school with your kids, you raised barns together, you harvested together. Went to church together.
There was a sense of "what is fair" for all.
Sure, you could go to the next town, and maybe get your sundries there, but you didn't. Because their town was not as good as your town.
There was a connection between the maker and the consumer. A sort of "best practices" philosophy and a real value price.
Now, you buy prescriptions at the lowest price, even if it involved the free labor by victims of broken contracts. Nobody likes internationalism, but everyone loves globalism. Because you don't have to look anybody in the eye when you negotiate a price.
It's a sort of global "worst practices" system. And manufacturers who have the same lack of disregard for consumers.
So no wonder everyone has to take pills and sing themselves lullabies.
We're all thieves.
WHAT IS DISEASE?
One might define disease as any condition of the living body which prevents normal function. Some diseases can be caused solely from the lack or oversupply of certain essential biochemicals produced by the body.
Example:
1) Diabetes(Insulin Deficiency)
2) Cortin Deficiency(Addison's Disease).
Other diseases can be caused by the body's own self-intoxification due to it's improper elimination of it's own wastes.
Hippocrates(Father of Medicine) - pointed out, that many diseases were a result of constipation. Also, that there are diseases caused by germs and viruses; which gain it's foothold in the body, when the body's natural defenses are crippled by imbalance and disharmony.
Lastly, there are now, in our new modern times, a new class of diseases emerged, which has become known as iatrogenic(doctor caused) diseases.
These "maladies" are a result of medicinal malpractice and side-effects of harsh chemical drugs used as antidotes and antibiotics.
----------------------
Realisticly, a doctor does not cure the patient. Hippocrates stated that the ideal doctor works as an artist to enable nature to cure the patient.
"The physician is the servant of Nature."
The Romans had a proverb for it: "Vis Medicatrix curavit", or the healing power of nature cures!
The writer, Oliver Wendell Holmes, who was also an M.D., stated somewhat humorously, "Nature cures but the doctor collects the fee!"
Because of the effects from drug shock, serum sickness, vacenosis, paint-killers, radiation, malformation of the unborn by experimental drugs(thalidomide), overmedication, and surgery, the public is groping for a Return to Natural Therapies.
-------------------------------------
FROM THE DAWN OF HISTORY TO PRESENT:
Ancient Folk Medicine:
Ancient folk medicine, thought believed to be a primitive superstition often had a very practical, emirical basis.
Antedating modern western medicine by thousands of years, the oldest medical book in existence, is called, "The Yellow Emperoro's Classic of Internal Medicine"(translated and published by the University of California Press, 1966).
Chinese scholars claim this work was written by the emperor Huang-ti in 2697 B.C. It is still regarded as their greatest authority, and is the basis of Oriental medicine.
It's basic philosophy is that health is harmony with nature and the right way of life is the way of nature. This being found, by using the idea of balance, which is basic, and excess and extremes are abhorred.
Chinese therapies include breathing excercises, acupuncture, moxabustion, and many kinds of massage, with a strong emphasis on herbs and herbal combinations.
The Chinese attrituted to us such great herbs as ginseng, ephedra, fo-ti, dong quai, chaulmoogra, camphor and the opium poppy for the treatment(respectively) of stress, asthma, senility, menopause, leprosy, aches and extreme pain.
In the late 1960's over eight million chines thrive mostly on Oriental herbs and therapies inherited from their ancestors!
------------------------------------
Graeco-Roman Therapies:
On the Greek island of Cos, a school of empirical medicine grew up around it's healing hot springs.
It is there, Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, instructed student doctors how to treat diseases with 39 herbs, diet, fasting, medicinal baths, steam baths, sea baths, massage, exercises, and other such simple therapies.
He objected to the use of strong drugs! "Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can cure the patient with food." "Your food shalle be your medicine, and your medicine shall be your food."
His favorite diet for sick people was a barley gruel and his favorite drink for those in pain was honey and vinegar.
Hippocrates insisted that disease comes primarily from disharmony with nature and that "our natures are the physicians of our diseases."
The Hippocratic school believed "man is his own disease."
They believed in treating the whole man, using the concept of "a sound mind in a sound body."
Metriotes--one of their great principles of natural health, follow moderation and temperance. They believed that it was the healing power of nature that cures, that the physician only assisted in the natural processes.
They disliked resorting to surgery when herbs could accomplish the balancing of nature.
Instead of accusing the sick as sinners, they regarded the sinners as sick, and sought physical, mental and spiritual healing for them.
They shunned the used of deadly drugs and used surgery only as a last resort.
They believed many diseases were caused by constipation and so they emphasized emetics, purges, and internal cleanliness.
---
The Romans followed these Greek traditions and emphasized even more the widespread use of herbs, massage, healing diets, etc. They used 150 herbs burned or steamed as incense in respiration therapy(inhalation therapy).
Their most famous physician, Galen, used therapies which included sunshine, warmth, baths, diets, swimming, gymnastics, fasting, rest diversion, anesthesia, and a materia medica of 540 herbs!
Dioscorides, a Greeek physician and naturalist, wrote an herbal encyclopedia which is still a classic, discussint the use of 600 plants, herbs, roots, and plant products.
Pliny believed that for every diseases, there had to be some plant to cure it. The physician's business, was to find that plant.
The Romans had a proverb:
"The three best doctors are, Dr. Quiet, Dr. Diet, and Dr. Happiness."

HERBAL RECIPES FOR COMMON ILLNESSES
WHY ARE HERBS SO HELPFUL?
One must realize that all physical energy comes from the solar energy paced into our foods.
Dr. Bircher-Bener of Switzerland, in 1936, stated, "Absorbtion and organization of sunlight, the essence of life, takes place almost exclusively within plants. Sunlight is the driving force of the cells of our body.
"Our domesticated food crops, mass-produced and forced by chemical fertilizers, do not have the nergythat is found in herbs! There are some herbs, like ginseng, garlic, and onions, which have been known to give off a soft, helaing radiation of their own, called mitogenetic radiation. To fully utilize the light energy available, one must use herbs!
breath of life: learning deep breathing techniques -- there are also herbs which help overcome blockds to good respiration. The inhalation and ingestion of select herbs can greatly relieve distresses, such as: asthma, emphysema, and mucous congestion of the lungs. The vitamin E contained in herb seed oils helps oxygenate blood and otherwise aid as a powerful help in respiratory therapy.
There are herbs which when used in conjunction with hydrotherapy, dissolve in the bath water and help draw out the toxins and poisons that block pores. There are also herbs that one can ingest, which will clean the kidneys and bladder, flush the liver and gall bladder, and act as diurectics and cholagogues.
In nutritional therapy, one might followow a careful and bountiful diet and never recieve the full measure of nutrients needed from foods alone. Many rare trace minerals and vitamins are found only in herbs!
Food grown in our modern impoverished soils are often deficient, but herbs growing in the wild are tiny factories selecting and concentrating the rare minerals from the dust of the earth for man's benefit.
In circulation therapy, massage and physiotherapy can do great things for circulation. But again, herbs hexist which are especially good for blood purification. They balance blood pressure, and help to cleanse veins and arteries of sludge=like material such as cholesterol that so often hinders good circulation.
In psychological therapy, there are herbs which help supply the bvitamin B necessary to prevent nervous tension due to modern day stress. There are herbs that act safely as mild sedatives and nervines helping the hyper-active person to maintain stability. Is it any wonder that the Bible speaks of herbs from the tree of life for the healing of nations?

It is of great interest to note, that when I were diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, the Internist mentioned; it was caused by the drugs used to try to thwart the stomach atrophy being treated at the time...

Dear Deepak
Mind-body is very important for type 2 diabetes, too. The newly announced drug rosiglitazone is very effective at preventing onset of diabetes, but studies have already shown that lifestyle changes, especially those including exercise programs, are very effective, too. Both the new drug and the lifestyle changes each reduce the chance of developing diabetes by about two-thirds, a really significant number.
What's changed relatively recently are the number of medication options available, and the drug industry's ability to advertise directly to consumers. It was not until drugs could be advertised to consumers, that the trend towards more medications prescribed per illness became so steep. Consumers are now asking their doctors for medicines, and in some cases are essentially self-prescribing. Drug advertising to consumers coinicided with a time when doctors were being taught and pressured to be more open to patients' perspectives. Recently doctors were shown to be very vulnerable to consumer and professional advertising themselves. As always, when things are wrong, follow the money.
love, Heather
One aspect of maintaining balance that I do not see mentioned is that of music. I just finished a freeform dance to free some blocked energy and now I am listening to Deepak's Chakra Balancing CD set (Soul of Healing.)
Our bodies resonate to the vibrations of music. When we participate and feel the music in our bodies whether it be by singing or dancing or playing an instrument, an alignment of the systems occurs. Be the music, let your body be the music. Even moving one's hands to the rhythm is a dance.
Awesome post Deepak...
And great information North... thanks.
My grandmother is 86 years old and gave up on the traditional medical doctor about 10 years ago. The only reason for her going then was for a monthly check up on her high blood pressure--her prescriptions totalled over $200 per month. Now, with no major illnesses she knows what to do and what to take for everything. She's become her own doctor! And she loves bragging about it--haha!
Now here's my problem... suggestions anyone? I have a heel spur and I am on my feet all day. And being the impatient person that I am, I went to the doctor because the pain had gotten so bad I wanted some quick relief. Over 6 weeks I'd gotten 3 shots of steroids. The doctor told me that with most people the pain eases up after the first or second shot. That didn't happen with me. So I won't be going back and I really don't want anything to do with surgery. My other leg and hip hurts now because I tend to lean on it to lessen the pain on the heel. So I've been taking anti-inflammatory herbs for about 2 months now--boswellin, bromelain, tumeric, ginger and a few others. I rest, massage and stretch those areas as much as I'm able to. I wear support in both my shoes and try not to stand in one spot too much--although my job makes me. It does hurt less than it did before, but some days are just killer... it's gotten so bad a few times that I end up crying.
So does anyone have any suggestions on what else I could be doing?
Not meaning to take away from the topic but it seemed like an opportunity to ask these questions to you all. Thanks.
Dear Deepak,
What a wonderful post!
My life experiences confirm all you wrote about prevention.
I have always challenged doctors' views on what could make me one healthy. They definitely lean towards over-prescribing drugs. I have always refused to take any.
It turned out that I 'knew' how to heal myself better than anyone else. What I intuitively knew about good lifestyle and prevention turned out to be true for me and for many other people. Ayurveda and your books have confirmed my original understanding and helped to fine-tune a routine that woks very well. As a result I have only known perfect health. Good genes? Perhaps, but I have not had any of the problems that I see in some of my family members who rely on doctors and conventional medical practices.
Of course, at times both surgery and drugs save lives, but, generally, prevention is best.
Today, meditation, yoga, an Ayurvedic lifestyle and pure, organic foods are all I need. My energy levels are always high and I only see doctors occasionally for check-ups.
Thanks for reminding us that it is possible to achieve perfect health.
Love,
Donatella
Dear Tiffany,
Not too long ago I shared with Skeptisch the experience that a friend of mine had with a bone spur in her foot. She consulted a doctor because she wanted what she called a 'proper diagnosis'. Then she meditated and visualized the bone spur melt in light. Needless to say, her doctor was shocked and told her that this experience had helped him redefine his conceptions of healing and functional disorders.
I am not saying that it works for everyone, but it did for her.
Love,
Donatella
Oops, Tiffany. I must add that this person's bone spur disappeared and there was no evidence of it in the x-rays.
Good luck,
Donatella
If a person is basically healthy, then a few simple regular good health habits can help them maintain health for a long time.
If however, they have a serious illness, or a chronic condition, it is good to see a specialist. It could be an Ayurveda specialist, or Western Specialist.
I say this because I have seen too many well-meaning but not knowledgable people tell sick folks all kinds of wrong stuff.
You want to heal naturally, great. But you owe it to yourself to work with someone that you know has expertise in natural medicines, as well as being trustworthy.
I myself have a chronic condition that I searched for years to find the cause of. Many of my "spiritual" friends had all kinds of great remedies they were absolutely certain would work.
It turned out I needed a chiropractor to keep the condition under control. None of my new age friends told me that. They were all in a rush to try the latest natural health thing that was buzzing around.
I also watched one of my friends die from a cancer that would have been easily healable if she had just gone ahead and had an operation while her tumor was very small. But she was in denial for a long time, and towards the final year of her life there was a parade of all kinds of healers to her bedside. But by then the cancer had metatasized and wasn't going to be stopped by color-therapy, NLP, or even meditation, all though all those things had at least a placebo effect on her.
So my opinion is that we live in a world where we are fortunate to have a lot of choices regarding health and healing. However, no application works all the time for everything.
Making an intelligent choice as to which healing modality to choose for what specific kinds of ailments, and just plain being realistic enough to go get a professional when you need one are important parts of the picture.
This may sound funny, but I actually apply the procedure I use for fixing a computer to my own health issues.
The idea is to isolate the cause, deduce possible fixes, and then work your way from the least invasive to the most invasive.
So start with least invasive and simplest fixes.
Surgery is pretty invasive and is admittedly the last resort. But there are times when it's the right thing.
Ayurveda is wonderful and can negate the need for surgury in many cases. But Ayurveda is an art that takes a high level of expertise. Same goes for acupuncture, which can eliminate the need for drug prescriptions in many cases.
The important thing is to think clearly about your health issues, and beome educated about the realistic choices that can work for you. Then start with the least invasive.
'..The sad fact today, as twenty years ago, is that the average physician remains a pill pusher, giving little thought to the enormous benefits of prevention..'
I sure would love to see an analogy, with the different legal professions..;)
But If I had a choice between a Dutch, Belgium or Polish MD, sue the Dutch, proactively, go with the Polish diagnostics, and have a Belgium for a seccond opinion, or,
Love, Passion!
Deepak,
I think one of the issues with getting the awareness out is that the media gets a cut of disease profits via pharmaceutical advertising so there is not much incentive to eliminate their revenue base, or to offend their major clients if it can be avoided.
There is a page that has been up on the Internet since 1995.
It is called "The end of disease".
Below it are up to date links to a great deal of technical information to eliminate disease.
It also contains infomration to boost your brain power, immune system and the chemistry behind losing weight.

Tiffany, thanks for the #12, it was my pleasure! All I had to do was a copy and paste from old archive files of mine...from college days!! lol
As for the spurs, I have them in both heels; and the only think that worked was the cortisone? If nothing is working for you, try ice-gel bags, for inflammation pain, and invest in gel-shoe-liners...I'd get them, but too expensive, but I heard they are marvelous!!
Hope you find some relief!! : )

Meditation is the only Medicine.Meditation is a technique to go beyond Body and Mind.
Osho has recently introduced this technique.
I completely Agree,
It is funny how Excersise stimulates the body and it does not even need to be intense excersise, just using the body to move around by walking or swimming or rowing even for 1 hour every day or every 2 days has a great effect on all kinds of areas like help with sleeping patterns, pain & stiffness even things like depression or mentaly related illness.
I have a Gym Membership like most of us probably do and some times when I finish work in the evening I quite often find myself thinking, I may go straight home tonight and skip the Gym, and then a little voice says, "Tut Tut" SO i GO and afterwards you come out of that Gym feeling a million dollars, money can not buy that kind of feeling!...you feel super charged and the feeling lasts for hours.... and to think I was going to pass on this feeling earlier I tell myself...LOL
It is quite strange at first when you start to become aware that your Body has it's own language....it speaks to you all of the time.... It is always informing us of it's likes and dislikes, Pain is a good example of this.
It is very rare that I visit my GP, but on the few occasions I have visited GP's either my own or accompanying other people, I some times get the impression that they are writing out your prescription as you enter the room and forgoe any examinations to save time.
I don't know about the US, But my experience both here in the UK and in Canada is that I have always had better medical attention by going directly to a walk in Centre at a Hospital or Clinic and asking to see a Dr, you may wait a lot longer but if you are concerned about something or in a lot of discomfort then I have found I got more satisfaction there than with my GP, the last time was when I had tonsilitus, horrible! :-(
I have a number of friends and people I know who are overweight and I think that the biggest reason they wont go to the Gym is because of embarrassment along with the way they have conditioned their lives.I am always telling them People go to a Gym to Lose weight and they are all shapes and sizes, there is nothing to be embarrassed about.
That is one thing if you are out of shape or even extremely overweight is that going to the Gym is not something to be embarrassed about, going to the Gym is about trying to better your life and lots of people of all shapes and sizes go there to the same thing.
Love Simon xx
Aloha Tiffiany
I agree with North about gel inserts for your shoes. When I was standing on my feet al day I found the shoe inserts with the nodules were the best. My herbalist also suggested soaking the feet being very beneficial to overall health.
Aloha Deepak
I was listening to Escaping the Prison of the Intellect and I loved how you shared the cycle of beginning and coming. I love using that understanding of the cycle with Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It is always a shift of perception of imaging and seeing a drug free world. Mahalo for taking us there. Love patty
Besides Deepak's books, another phenominal book relating to meditation and healing is "You're Not Old Until You're Ninety" by Rebecca Latimer. (It's difficult to find, but worth the search.) In it she describes how she "met" her healer named Jaime when she meditated. After having melanoma cells on her nose, she describes how she meditated before surgery was scheduled and by the time of the surgery date, it almost disappeared. Such an inspiring message! Deepak, I'm listening to your book on tape as I commute to work, the one about when you were a little boy and met Baba on your way to school. I send my love....You Rock!~Sharon
Yogi-one,
Your post is an important one I think, and a good reminder that a TRULY holistic approach to medicine emphasizes WHOLE in its approach. Which means that modern medicine can and should be an integral part of a treatment should it be necessary. What tends to happen is that peple fall into one camp or the other: either it's all western medicine or it's all alternative therapies. A true holistic approach to healing might include chemotherapy as well as massage or accupuncture.
Peace,
Scott.
Scott,
In post #4 you mention the works of Scott Sonnon and Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, can you recommend the best way to access their works.
I am looking for a way to heal ulcerative colitis.
-Thank you for your post.
I need recommendation for a good Ayurvedic doctor in the US.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
hari,
Sorry to hear that you are having discomfort. UC is a bear to deal with, I have a close friend that has frequent flare ups.
Feldenkrais and Sonnon's work deal mostly with chronic pain, efficiency of movement, athletic performance and in some cases paralysis, so may not apply completely to what you're dealing with.
I can however recommend a book by Dr. John Sarno called "Divided Mind". I haven't read "Divided Mind" yet, but I have read his first book "Healing Backpain"; an enormous help in releaving the backpain that I'd been dealing with. John Sarno has done a tremendous amount of academic and practical study involving the mind/body connection. The new book deals with many stomach/intestinal ailments and might be of some benefit to you. His approach is similar to Scott Sonnon's. Sarno claims that many body ailments that we think of as physiological are actually a tool used by the mind to distract our conscious minds from dealing with painful emotions etc. He has had tremendous success with back pain and his work actually dramatically changed my view of pain and disease. His book took me in a completely different direction in my life.
If it's good let me know.
Good luck in your quest for relief from UC.
Peace,
Scott.
Hari,
Dr. David Simon at the Chopra Center is a good man to do Ayurvedic consultation with. He is an MD (Neurologist I believe)and Ayurvedic physician. Phone numbers etc. can be found on Chopra.com
Peace,
Scott.
Hari, may I answer your question? Dr Lad and his associates, in New Mexico, Drs Deepak Chopra and David Simon at San Diego, Dr Tara at the Chopra center in NewYork are a few I know of. I met Dr Tara at the journey into healing seminar, at SanDiego, and was very impressed by her.
I am happy you are looking for an Ayurvedic physician. I have heard a Yunani physician in my town talk about how he can cure Ulcerative Colitis.
At one time I had a patient whose father had ulcerative colitis. Mother is a nurse at the hospital. We both searched the literature about Ulcerative Colitis. We found out that food allergy testing, by RAST, or Multi Cap, which check the IgE antibody levels against common foods and avoiding the foods one is allergic to helps. There are reference laboratories that do IgG mediated food allergy testing also. Or you may consider going to an allergist for skin testing for foods and avoiding the offending foods.
I hope that was clear. God bless.
I've read a bit about, that, family/father, Karma, and such, especially that of yours, Simon, i wanted to post a comment on that, but that was too close to home, that, island,
the soundtrack, of mine, would have, to be, unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield,

4Simon, excercise is exclusive, to keeping weight off, combined with diet. For those who canot go to gyms or work out, I would suggest walking!! Walking has always been a good invigorator; which one can do at their own pace. I used to be a fast hard walker, but since I broke my foot almost 3 years ago, it's slower, and I am far from overweight, but I certainly am "thicker" from the lesser aggresive walking ability!
I have friends my age, who cant' beat the battle of the bulge, work off love-handles and a thick mid-drift. They asked my secret for staying slim at "my age"(ahem!).... in which I answer--I do not have a car! : ) Walking is the cheapest excercise, headache reliever(migraines) and an all-over good health workout. I'd give just about anything for a good treadmill!!
4Patty--yes, I know a few people using the gel-inserts and swearing by them... why does everything good and healing, have to be the most expensive? ONe of these days, I'm going to get me a pair though... : )
Love,
North
Q-4Deepak--for years, my stress-releaver was meditation and sports! When I had to give up sports for health reasons, I became a vigourous walker--walking hard and fast, to get my heart and lungs up to maximum output.
But, then 3 years ago, I"d fallen downstairs to do laundry after a surgery, b/c I had no help; well, I hurt my whole left side, elbow/shoulder/foot/ankle, none of them after 3 years are healed or seem to be healing. I only had physio on the exposed nerve in the elbow, and getting cortisone for the shoulder.
What I was wondering is, what form of heart-pumping can I do now, to maximize my efforts to stay slim, and keep my arteries unclogged, and lungs strong? I am newly -50- I can only walk slower now, and not close to what I was able to do. I have not put on weight, but my middle is thicker-feeling? ugggh
Help Doctor, help!(gentle smiles.)
With Loving Kindness,
North
Hi North!
I'm no doctor (except in my imagination), but I have had just about every aching or injured body part you could imagine :). Do you have access to a pool? Swimming is great for the heart and the entire muscle structure. Also in the summer you can do fast walking in a lake. Walk parallel to the shore; the faster and/or deeper you go, the more resistance that you have. The water supports the joints and deadens the impact on the bones. Your heart rate will elevate very quickly into the aerobic range and even into the anaerobic as well (both are important).
I know you live in Canada, so like us, walking in a lake is only really practical for about 3 to 4 months a year...but in that time you can really build up your endurance. Plus the price is reasonable (free).
Peace,
Scott.
HI Scott... nah, our pool is like 2 miles from me, and the nearest lake, at least 12 miles! I don't know how to swim(blush) but, I can paddle around.
The obstacle for me is... a bad foot/elbow/arm; same side of the bod!! No problem staying slim, but at -50- now, I"m getting marsmallowy, and having been a sports freak all my life; this is real hard on me to bear too... lol I liked my buff and hard bod!! : ( being so athleticly fit, really felt good...
I have a set of ropes, that you put on the doorknob, and lay on the floor, and excercise. It is sooo awesome for trimming, and tightening loose skin... b/c of my arm, I cna't even lift a cup of coffee without excruciating pain...
Swimming sounded great though Scott, and I thank you dearly for the suggestion... as is, I just try to walk as much as possible, for as long as I can... I like making my heart/lungs pump!! It's like a natural high... lol
Love,
North
Thank you Scott and Geeta for the valuable information. Thank you.
One thing that really works is QiGong, the flavor I got exposed to is SpringForest Qigong based in Minnesota.
The master healed me instantaneously, and I had no symptoms for about 8 months, which was great.
Alas, I was also supposed to do daily meditation
which I couldn't and I will blame it on external circumstances ;) no, seriously, karma can sometimes be really tough.
But, in my experience, Master Lin is a great healer.
Geeta, can you pass on the name and contact info of the unani physician in your town? Thanks.
Hari,
We are fortunate enough to live very close to Master Lin (I work about a mile from where her teaches). I have taken Master Lin's beginning course in Qigong and enjoyed it very much. If it works for you, I would encourage you to practice again.
Peace,
Scott.
"where he teaches"
Thanks Donatella, North, and Patty...
I know the suggestion about visualizing the spur disappearing would work-- I need to work on it more. I've done the same technique helping others to heal and it's worked... so guess I need to think about myself this time, huh? And the only gel inserts I've tried are the ones from say, Walmart. Those haven't worked for me. I'm actually saving to go buy some specially made shoes, so I'm hoping all of this will help.
Thanks again everyone. :)
Today I was sitting in a room with people having a meeting and I noticed that one of the women who was present at the meeting was not her normal self..she was very reserved and I sensed right away that something was troubeling her...
After the meeting she asked to speak with me, so we spoke alone for a few minutes... and she told me that one of her neighbours had died and the gentelman who had died was someone she had became very close to over the years and that it what was making her sad...
I said I was sorry to hear that....
she whent on to say the neighbour who had passed on was 80 years old..
and I said well that is a long life and a good age...
she said yeah but what is sad is that he was very much aware of his status even though he was sick....towards the end he started to lose his marbles and he knew it...he knew what state he was in, he knew his body and his mind were failing him in old age as he used to say to her...oh I am dying and cry he would..
I said to her.... what does that tell you though??
What does that tell us??
At Eighty years of Age...the body and the mind are falling to pieces coming to the end of their existence, yet the one who is aware, the one who is there at the age of eighty is the same one who was there at the age of eight...
The mind may be failing, the body may be ending and decrepid...but the one who is aware of yourself the true inner self is not the body nor the mind, awareness is not material.
when I said this to her she suddenly saw the situation from another angle......
an eighty year old body and eighty year old mind that has ended...but the one she knew and loved is not the body is not the mind...she knew and loved him internaly and that internal being never changed even when his mind and body were falling apart towards death, something was there that never even flickered.
She left our meeting a much happier person and she is going to smile at his funeral this week and remember him in life. I said think not on an old broken body or a decaying mind, but on that which was him, the true awareness that was never different and is alive in your memories.
Love Simon xx
Hari, please go to open thread of 060606 the last comment and email me . I will give you the info you need. I spoke with the physician and he is eager to take up the challenge of curing the ailment!! God bless.
now that's magic, Simon, the stardust.. you leave behind,
Love, passion
Great points Simon!! Tiffany, you getting a pair of Dr. Scholl's?

I have tired both, the gel pads and the nodual massage inserts. The nodual massage inserts were the ones I would swear by. My little granddaughter was having problems with her feet and I picked up a pair of the slippers with the nodules. I also had her use a massage tool and soak her feet. The slippers with the nodules seemed to work. What happens is the nodules give complete relief to the foot's pressure points. The inserts only cost about 20.00. The slippers are about 35.00. I also had picked ups some of the nodual inserts for my son in-law who didn’t have any luck with the gel pads. You might have to look around for a distributor for the inserts. I think they were created by a manufacture in Australia. My first pair I picked up in a Health Food Store and that was before the gel pads. I hope this helps to make a informed decision.
And Aloha Kate
So nice to see your presence:) love patty
Scott - I also read a couple books by Sarno about healing pain and they worked for me. After being diagnosed with arthritis, thin discs and bone spurs in my neck I spent 2 years with a chiropractor, doing yoga, physical therapy and an occasional muscle relaxer. I had some improvement but was still in regular pain. It was all due to poor sitting and overall posture over the years. After reading the book I had a good cry over some personal long term turmoil in my life and the neck pain disappeared. I rarely have a flare up and it happens when something is bugging me. I highly recommend these books.

4-Patty--thanks Patty!! I've never seen the nodule inserts, and doubt if my town would have them, but $20 isn't too bad, so i'm going hunting for some!! We don't have a book-store, or even town bus's, let alone a health store : ( so I may have to find some online, or maybe my son can find some in the city he's attending college at??
The doc wanted me to get special shoes with arch supports, but they were over two hundred dollars, and we pay 14% tax's on everything here.. even candy for kids!!, so that was out of the question !!
Anyone ever try those foot rollers? You rub your foot/feet over these wood-nobby rollers... it may not help spurs, but it may improve circulation?
Love,
North
Similar to the wooden rollers, I heard from a very reliable source (Dr. Chet Zelasko, PhD in nutrition and exercise medicine and also a strong believer in prevention and natural methods) say that a simple tennis ball could help. Just keep one handy and every time you sit down, roll it around under your foot. Apparently it normalizes strained muscles in your sole, and helps to haul the spur back into place.
Geeta: I'm so glad you're in this group. I read your comments on another thread (forget which, maybe the open thread) and I'm immensely relieved to know that there are at least some pediatricians out there that don't buy the standard line about autism or antibiotics, etc. My son's previous pediatrics practice was totally clueless about the effect of knee-jerk prescriptions of antibiotics and the role they play in triggering autism. I'm reading Dr Douillard's book on Ayurveda for kids (thanks again, Aurora, for the reference), and it's so sensible it blows my mind.
4-sWORDSman--thankyou very much for your respones to the foot rollers... gosh yeah a tennis ball would work too!! I imagine it would massage the foot, and ultimately get the circulation up to optimum flow? Definately going to try the tennis ball!! Hear that, Tiffany? A tennis ball might help!!
Thankyou!!

On this site: http://www.footsmart.com/Product.aspx?ProductId=2283 they have a picture of the slipper. I can't find the inserts. They are exactly like the slipper only the area of the toes are cut off. The inserts end where the toes begin. In wearing the slippers or the inserts you only wear them for about an hour a day till your feet adjust to the different pressure. They sell other slippers with less nodules or wider nodules but this style I believe is the orignal. If I happen by the shoe store that sells the inserts I will look to see if they have a website on the package. The tennis ball sounds good too. love patty
Deepak: When in India, I love to check out the alternative medicine practitioners like the homeopathic, the accupressure, the ayurvedic, etc. Each told me how their school of thought has a way of eradicating the illness rather than "maintaining" it in the present condition with drugs which have a harmful effect on our body.
Having said that, I am delighted about the Walmart initiative too since a lot of people are not convinced with anything but the meds and now they can afford it and also afford the peace of mind.
@Patty--thanks Patty!! Awesome slippers, going to put out the word to my fam living in cities, to find me a size:6 pair! : )
Bone spurs are most commonly associated with osteoarthritis. As osteoarthritis breaks down the cartilage in your joint, your body attempts to repair the loss. Often this means creating new areas of bone along the edges of your existing bones.
Bone spurs may also be a normal part of aging. Many older people who don't have osteoarthritis or other diseases may still have bone spurs, though they aren't aware of them. Your body may create bone spurs to add stability to aging joints. Bone spurs may help redistribute your weight to protect areas of cartilage that are beginning to break down. For some people, bone spurs may actually provide a benefit, rather than a painful condition.

WARNING:
One of the worst pieces of bad advice ever given by what purports to be ? The medical industry?
Is to stay out of the sun, this can cause osteoporosis and lethal cancers and generate substantial revenue for doctors and the medical industry. It also sells Sun Tan Lotion!
The advice a BODY MECHANIC (they generate revenue from keeping you healthy) would give you focuses on the natural nature designed solution TO THE SUNS LIFE GIVING RAYS.
The epidermis contains melanocytes. There is about one melanocyte for every keratinocyte in the skin.28 Melanocytes are cells that produce a pigment called melanin. Melanin is transferred to the cells of the epidermis and hair, giving skin and hair their color.
The number of melanocytes in the epidermis is the same for all races, but the amount of melanin produced varies.
Melanin absorbs ultraviolet light and protects us from sun damage.21 The melanin shields the DNA of the nucleus in keratinocytes from the mutating effects of the sun.
What happens is when your biochemical machine is short on chemicals, or is unable to import enzymes from your "food" it will reduce availability of these chemicals to non critical systems (My discovery by the way). One of them being the production of melanin.
Now how many of you can add 2 + 2 and figure out one major cause of gray hair? Loss of pigmentation?
It might not work in every case but in many this will reverse your gray hair. I actually had a hair that was gray at the end but brown at the base.
Take PABA .5 - 3 grams per day.
I really hope that in return for my assitance you all will support my endeavors.
Furthermore I think the value add of eliminating disease on the planet is something around 1 trillion dollars per year.
I think 1 billion dollars (one time fee) would be a reasonable "return" on my efforts and instruction and the systems I will be putting in place.
I have been working on this for 20 years.
Also as I have said before the consumer will be imposing new knowledge requirements for doctors. There are at least practitioners that are already onto the new approach but I would bet at least 80% will need to be educated, retested and relicensed.
Who knows who started the medical schools and helped define the curriculum in the US?
@Richard--thankyou for all this information!! I wish I could afford to try the system you proscribe for spurs. More than that, I wish you could be "discovered" and your billion granted to you!!
With Appreciation,
North
Wow guys thanks so much for all this information--amazing how much I can learn from asking one little question... I really didn't think I'd get that many responses... surprised me!
So Richard, if I go out and buy all this stuff and take it the spur will disappear?
Also I'm wondering how come my doctor didn't mention anything about osteoarthritis?
She just said I have flat feet and that it finally caught up to me.
Hmmm...
North, thanks, thats the problem everything is backwards you should be able to afford this stuff. I wouldn't really want a Billion for myself but I would use it to launch a lot of programs and new systems if I had access to that much.
Click my name and it will take you to a special company they don't really advertise.
In the search box type nutri joint and there you will find all the above listed nutrients together.
Tiffany, yes it should go away. It might take 2 - 3 years but I doubt it. The bone spur is probably created by a distorted electromechanical stress due to the piezoelectric character of bone, which effects it's growth pattern and density, which will change back to normal when the joints are all back to normal.
They probably taught her about "flat feet" medical school. And she was probably taught the answer is surgery.
In reality you may have a problem with the posterior tibial tendon, the main tendon that supports the arch. Factors that can contribute to this problem are obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, certain types of arthritis and athletic overuse, and malnutrition.
In other words you may also get rid of your "flat footedness". By improving your tendon and cartilage, and lubricant health as well as increasing elasticity.
@Richard--totally agree!! Health care should be a covered care. I could never understand really, why good health care is not available to all; seems to me, if anything health care is becoming more for the financially privileged!! A two-tier system of health-care---creates boundaries and hurdles. Poor people end up living lives in misery, merely b/c they could not afford the health costs!!
I know for a fact, my arm/foot/elbow would be healed by now with some physiotherapy!! But, it's for the wealthier injured ones.
Ooh, my body is terribly banged up from sports!! I played sports winter and summer, plus mountain-climbing(we have rock-walls) hiking, love skating very much, plus fishing/hunting, skeet-shooting, archery---loved archery!! Can't use my bow no more, b/c the injured shoulder/elbow is my bow-arm. Trust me, I've tried.... : ( Anybody wanna buy a bow(with distance sites), 3 targt-shooting arrows and one hunting arrow? lol Oh, I"m kidding..... will keep them in case of war!!
IN my next life, NO sports for ME< I"m going to be a dresses only girl, with long nails, a prissy-preened missy, without sports-related injuries to haunt me in old age! : )

Well, I'm drunk as, a..;)

L-glutamine, is my non-spiritual,
but, then, again..
Love, Passion!
sWORDSman thank you for 49. Namaskar.
Yes Marek GABA will calm you down, and the L-Glutamine is the one other thing that the brain can convert to energy besides glucose. It also makes you smarter, and keeps people from craving alcohol drinking especially binge drinking.
Of course one can still get intoxicated, but did you know alcohol is an antioxident? It's the byproducts that cause the hangover, Acetaldehyde, the immediate byproduct of ethanol metabolism, take a little N-acetyl cysteine and L-cysteine and it will directly reduce acetaldehyde to nontoxic thial intermediates, substantially reducing the damage brought on by acetaldehyde which later is converted to Acetate can then serve as a fuel in cellular energy production. (Acetate is a form of acetic acid, the acid that makes vinegar sour.)
The second major route of acetaldehyde into the brain is through its production by a yeast called Candida albicans. Candida is known to occur in the intestinal tract of virtually all humans to some degree. When present only in small amounts, being kept in check by a healthy immune system and the so-called "friendly flora," such as Acidophilus and Bifidus bacteria, Candida is relatively harmless.
Yet due to the modern overuse of antibiotics, birth control pills, and cortisone/prednisone drug therapy, as well as excessive stress (which naturally produces excess cortisone in the body), sugar consumption and malnutrition, millions of Americans now suffer from an excessive growth of Candida in their intestines the so-called "yeast syndrome." Candida lives by fermenting sugars to produce energy. Unfortunately for the humans who harbor large colonies of Candida in their gut, the waste by-product of this sugar fermentation by Candida is AH.
Biochemical research has shown that this AH may combine with red blood cells, proteins, enzymes, and other substances present in the gut or gut lining, and thus travel through the bloodstream to reach more distant parts of the body such as the brain. Research has also shown that AH can then detach from the red blood cells or proteins it traveled with through the bloodstream, thus enabling AH to damage cells far from the site of its intestinal production by Candida.
THE NEXT TIME YOU GO INTO YOUR DOCTOR ask him or her
"The second major route of acetaldehyde into the brain is ?"
Then explain it to him or her....

Professor's data at root of latest corporate scandal
After reviewing proxy statement data filed with the SEC from every company on the S&P 1500 index, Lie discovered a pattern in which stocks fell slightly just before options were granted and rose shortly after the grant date, an increase attributable to shifts in the entire market.
Backdating options can be legal if approved by a company’s board, disclosed to shareholders and properly accounted for in tax and regulatory filings. But Lie said too many public companies, more than 2,000 overall that gave stock options to executives, ignored those rules or failed to deduct the added compensation from their bottom line.
This is a massive corporate scandal, one that some say is “bigger than Enron.” Billions of dollars have been creamed off corporate accounts by CEOs and their cronies by backdating the issuing of stock options.
As Reuters reports, the executives are worried, along with Steve Jobs. The stock market could be in for a beating.
@Richard... I figured you'd like to surf that site!! I'm always looking for informative material to read : )
Actually, I am not surprised by your finding really. Corrupt corporations have been de-bulking profits for many years.
One area which irks me is banking!! WE put our money in the bank, and banks "use our cash" to invest, making "them" billions in revenue a year.
Meanwhile, WE..who's money they "use" to invest, have to "pay" ridiculous charges/fees to access our own money!!
I think, the system is corrupt, and that banks are also de-bilking(and de-bulking) billions of possible interest rates, for it's customers, who's money they use to initially invest?
I get charged monthly fees on my account in one month, whether I use it that month or not?
Phone companies too, are as crooked as a lightening bolt! Many years ago, I realized I'd been paying charges to use "their phone" which was rentable. Well, after paying on that phone, I extimated I had paid at least 12-hundred dollars, to rent that phone, when in fact, the phone was ONLY worth, $79 dollars!!
I called the phone co. here, and demanded re-imbursement, and pretty much called them thieves. Less than a 3-month period later, the phone co. pulled their rentable phones!! : )
NOTE: I never did get reimbursed the $1,100 dollars I over-paid on a $79 dollar phone!
I believe, pretty much every corporation are corrupt, and we the consumers, suck it up..with helpless compliance.

RE: Open Letter by Matthias Rath, M.D. to the Health Food Community in the USA
Dr. Rath is the physician and scientist who led the medical breakthrough on vitamins and cardiovascular disease documented in his book “Why Animals Don't Get Heart Attacks - But People Do”. Two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling stated in his last will in June 1994, “There is no question in my mind that I thought about Dr. Rath as my successor”.
Dr. Rath was born in Germany and worked in the USA for many years. Now he lives in Holland and is organizing the battle against the head of the international Pharma-Cartel Germany's Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF and their efforts to ban vitamins and other natural therapies world-wide.
With this Open Letter Dr. Rath informs the health food community in the U.S. and the American people about important recent developments in the global battle to preserve vitamin freedom. Moreover, this letter is an appeal to every human being to seize the historic responsibility and opportunity helping to end the tyranny of the Pharma-Cartel and lay the foundation of a new health care in the interest of the people.
The time to act is now.
German Pharma-Cartel Hoechst, Bayer and BASF
– Unmasked as the Organizers of Auschwitz
- Now Threaten World-Wide Vitamin Freedom
• German pharmaceutical multinationals Hoechst, Bayer and BASF spearhead international efforts to ban health information on vitamins and other natural therapies
• Deutsche Bank (German Bank), in a futile forward defense, admits that they financed the concentration camp Auschwitz and Nazi war efforts on behalf of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF
• With credibility of the Pharma-Cartel at an all-time low, people around the world now have the historic opportunity to liberate themselves from the yoke of the Pharma-Cartel and its “business with disease”
• Health food stores and the health food community become cornerstones of a new community-based health care system that is effective, safe and affordable
The years 1999 and 2000, the turn of the millennium, also coincide with a fundamental turn in human history and human health. The 20th century will become known as an epoch were human health was controlled by the pharmaceutical industry, an industry that shamelessly promoted diseases as the basis for a trillion-dollar annual business with pharmaceutical drugs.
Now, at the end of this century of deadlock for human health, the most common dis-eases are recognized to be the direct result of vitamin deficiencies and therefore preventable in a natural way. As a direct result of this knowledge heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, heart failure affecting and killing millions of people today will become largely
unknown during the 21st century.
In order to secure the survival of its trillion dollar global market, the pharmaceutical industry will put up a fierce fight against anything that threatens it. The key for the survival of the pharmaceutical industry, as we know it today, is the immediate and comprehensive ban of information about natural therapies, particularly health information about vitamins.
The health food stores and the natural health community at large is facing another wave of attacks from new regulations, legislation to the infiltration of the nutritional supplement industry and the take-over of vitamin companies by pharmaceutical multinationals.
In the battle for global health care in the next millennium there will be only one victor. On one side is the pharmaceutical industry which maintains and promotes disease as the very basis of expanding their pharmaceutical markets. On the other side is the natural health community with its goal to prevent and eliminate diseases through vitamins and other natural therapies.
In this historic battle, the Pharma-Cartel has received a series of severe blows before, among them the DHEA act of 1994. But now, in February 1999, the Pharma-Cartel received its biggest blow from which it is unlikely to recover.
Under pressure, Deutsche Bank (German bank) had to reveal that the German pharmaceutical companies Hoechst, Bayer and BASF, the spearheads of the international Pharma-Cartel, were the organizers of the worst crimes ever committed in recorded human history.
Chemical/pharmaceutical giants Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were the organizers of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the financiers of Hitler's rise to power, and the driving force of his military conquest of the world,
the Second World War.
These revelations show the true face of the international Pharma-Cartel. In its insatiable greed to control the chemical and pharmaceutical markets of the world, this industry risked the death of over 50 million people during World War II. Now, with its plan to ban health information on vitamins, the same Pharma-Cartel risks death of more than 600 million people from preventable disease in the next generation alone
Pharmaceutical Industry – Business Based on Proliferating Diseases
• According to European health insurance companies, 98% of the pharmaceutical drugs currently marketed and prescribed are without proven efficacy. Thus it is now established that most pharmaceutical drugs can
neither prevent diseases nor cure them.
• According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, severe and known side effects of pharmaceutical drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the US and other industrialized countries. Thus, in an effort to expand their global markets, the pharmaceutical industry created the fourth largest epidemic to haunt mankind, the drug side effect epidemic.
(JAMA, April 15, 1998).
• In a public alert, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in its January 6, 1996 issue warned that all cholesterol-lowering drugs currently on the market cause cancer and should be avoided. Yet the Pharma-Cartel consistently ignores this warning. Since this public warning, the market for cholesterol-lowering drugs has been extended to an estimated
20 million people worldwide creating a time bomb for a future cancer epidemic.
• After publication of these anti-Pharma-Cartel studies in JAMA, the pressure of the Cartel on the American Medical Association (AMA) increased. In January 1999 in an unprecedented move the AMA fired JAMA-Editor-in-Chief Charles Lundberg under a bogus pretence. The real background of this step is the Pharma-Cartel's effort to control and manipulate the information provided to the doctors in America and beyond.
The credibility of the pharmaceutical industry with patients and consumers is approaching zero. In a desperate effort, the Pharma-Cartel is putting the finger in this dam of lost credibility.
1999/2000 Decisive Years in Battle of Human Health Against the Pharma Cartel
The next two years will be decisive in the global battle for a new health care. The Pharma-Cartel remains determined to outlaw health information on vitamins and other natural therapies worldwide.
• Spearheaded by Germany’s Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF, the world's largest exporters of pharmaceutical products, as well as the German government, the next meeting of the UN Codex Alimentarius Commission on nutrition and dietary supplements is scheduled for spring 2000 in Berlin, Germany.
• With global mergers, the pharmaceutical industry tries to prepare for the decisive battle to manipulate world opinion about health matters with mass media advertising through sheer financial force.
• Lobbying and manipulation of national and international pharmaceutical laws remain a key tool in the Pharma-Cartel’s effort to suppress natural health information. In a spectacular move, German pharmaceutical giant Hoechst plans to merge with French Rhone Poulenc and establish its headquarters at Strasbourg, the seat of the future government
of the United States of Europe.
• At the national level every legal device is used by the Pharma-Cartel to roll back earlier defeats. New nutritional labeling legislation is introduced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) violating the accomplishments of the Dietary Health and Education Act of 1994.
• New “standardization” rules and requirements for clinical studies are introduced making it difficult or impossible for vitamin companies to finance proving the efficacy of natural health remedies.
• As a last desperate step, pharmaceutical multinationals are trying to infiltrate the health food industry and its industry bodies. In the April 1996 edition of the Medical Investment Report, Rexall Sundown, an influential member of the NNFA and of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) announced a “strategic alliance” with Hoechst. Shortly thereafter,
Rexall Sundown tried to acquire other major vitamin companies in the US.
Not surprisingly, at the last meeting of Codex Alimentarius in September 1998, CRN was openly siding with the Pharma-Cartel’s position. Almost a side aspect in this context: Rexall Sundown was publicly connected to Organized Crime in a lead article of the April 14, 1997, issue of the Dow Jones Weekly Barron’s.
All these efforts are not signs of strength, but of a battle that can not be won by the pharmaceutical industry. But the biggest blow for the Pharma-Cartel was yet to come.
Hoechst, Bayer and BASF – Committing Crimes Against Humanity Then and Now
In a widely publicized speech at the city hall of Chemnitz, Germany on June 21, 1997, I had already revealed the dark Nazi past of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF in the context of our fight against the Codex Alimentarius plans. This tribunal against the Pharma-Cartel was immediately translated into several languages and disseminated through the Internet (www.drrath.com).
Over the last 18 months this Chemnitz Program had created a public ground swell inside and outside of Germany. It was this speech and its international repercussions that terminated 55 years of silence on the part of German companies ignoring the justified demands of victims from Auschwitz and other forced labor camps.
On February 4, 1999, 20 months later and under increasing international pressure, the largest German bank, Deutsche Bank, had to open its Nazi files totaling more than 6 miles in length. The Deutsche Bank files about the Nazi connection of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF force us to re-write the history of W.W.II and the 20th century. The revealed documents show:
• To achieve control of the world's natural resources and raw materials Hoechst, Bayer and BASF's promoted Hitler's rise to power and his W.W.II effort to conquer the world. With over 70 million Reichsmark (more than half a billion dollars in today's currency) they were the single largest donors to the Nazi Party, essentially financing the preparations for W.W.II. To combine their strategic global efforts Hoechst, Bayer and BASF had formed a Cartel with the code name “IG Farben” (Interest Union Colors).
• Hoechst, Bayer, BASF’s IG Farben execu-tives Hermann Schmitz and Karl Krauch developed the four-year economic plan for the war preparation and met with Hitler’s Reichs-Marschall Hermann Göring on June 15, 1936. Three months later, on September 9, 1936, Hitler himself presented the IG Farben plan in a spectacular announcement as the “New Phase,” the official Nazi economic policy to prepare for war.
• 80% of the positions in the newly created German Ministry of “Resources and Raw Materials” in W.W.II Germany were filled with Hoechst, Bayer and BASF specialists who coordinated the acquisition of industries and property in conquered European countries on behalf of IG Farben.
• The Auschwitz concentration camp was the forced labor outpost of “IG Auschwitz,” the largest industrial plant in W.W.II Europe and a 100% subsidiary of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF's IG Farben. This concentration camp supplied free labor for nearby “IG Auschwitz” which produced 100% of all synthetic gasoline and rubber as well as other chemicals for Hitler's war.
The chemical and pharmaceutical corporations Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were the organizers, architects and the operators of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the site of the worst crimes ever committed against humanity.
• To test unexplored pharmaceuticals and vaccines, Hoechst, Bayer and BASF used thousands of innocent inmates of the concentration camp as human guinea pigs. More than 50% of all participants died during these “experiments.” Many more were silenced afterwards so that they would not be able to tell others about their torture.
• Daily selections among the work force of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were made at the factory gate to optimize work efficiency of “IG Auschwitz.” “Useless work force” was disposed of in the gas chambers of the Auschwitz camp. Even the extermination chemical Zyklon B was provided by Hoechst, Bayer and BASF's IG Farben.
• In the 1947 Nuremberg War Crime Tribunal several managers of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were convicted of mass murder, slavery and other crimes against humanity. Telford Taylor, the lead US-Prosecutor at the Nuremberg Tribunal concluded: “Without the support of IG Farben the Second World War would not have been possible.”
• In 1947 the Nuremberg War Tribunal dismantled the IG Farben-Cartel, but Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were allowed to continue. By 1953 all of the convicted managers were free and immediately assumed highest positions in
post-war German industry.
• Only ten years later, in 1963, Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were ready for their next global attack on human rights. As part of the global expansion of their pharmaceutical market, Hoechst, Bayer and BASF had to make sure that the health benefits of vitamins remain unknown. Towards this end they pressed the German government to spearhead an international effort to ban vitamins and other non-patentable natural therapies. In 1963 the German government became the political executor of these plans by initiating the now infamous UN Codex Alimentarius commission on nutrition, and chairing
this commission since.
Deutsche Bank – Assisting in Crimes Against Humanity Then and Now
Why was Deutsche Bank's CEO Rolf Breuer forced to make these revelations and why did Deutsche Bank have to come out with the truth now, over half a century after the end of W.W.II?
• On February 6, 1999 the influential German Newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) wrote about the Nazi-IG Farben documentation: “Deutsche Bank was the house bank of IG Farben and they (Hoechst, Bayer and BASF) dictated the business terms of this bank.”
• Half a century ago Hoechst, Bayer and BASF dictated that Deutsche Bank finance Hitler's military conquest of the World on behalf of these chemical/pharmaceutical multinationals. Their involvement was so deep that a 1946 Allied investigation of the Deutsche Bank recommended it be liquidated and its leaders tried as war criminals.
• Today Deutsche Bank is still the “house bank” of the Pharma-Cartel and this bank plays the same role: Financing the way for the economic conquest of the world on behalf of the German Pharma-Cartel.
• This global strategy explains the current plan of Deutsche Bank to acquire Banker's Trust of America to become the largest bank in the world. In light of the facts, neither the people of America nor American corporations will benefit from this merger. To the contrary. People, politicians and anti-trust authorities in the USA should stop this merger now.
• The Pharma-Cartel sent Deutsche Bank boss Breuer into the minefield in an effort to clean up the Nazi past on their behalf. In a desperate forward defense they thought by revealing the historic facts they might be pardoned by the world opinion. This pardon, they know, is a precondition for the unhindered expansion of their global pharmaceutical market.
• Even with the timing for going public with this historic confession, Deutsche Bank and the Pharma-Cartel showed how much they fear the light of the day. The revelations were deliberately placed during times of maximum media distraction in the US the last days of the Clinton impeachment trial and in Germany at the climax of carnival season.
Futile Efforts by the German Government to Protect the Pharma-Cartel’s Interests
The current German government continues the tradition and functions as a blind servant of the German Pharma-Cartel. Immediately after he had become German Chancellor in September 1998, Gerhard Schroeder started a whole series of secret meetings at the Chancellery with executives from Hoechst, Bayer, BASF and other German companies. The purpose of these meetings was to find a way to protect German companies from an avalanche of class action lawsuits from concentration camp survivors. Schroeder assigned his chief of staff Bodo Hombach to the job of manipulating public opinion and twisting the arms of the Jewish community as well as the US-government officials. Hombach’s travel party includes Rolf Breuer, the CEO of the
German Bank who was sent on this sinner’s pilgrimage by his corporate clients.
The targets of the Hombach-Breuer mission in the US are, among others:
• The World Jewish Council from whom they want approval,
• Ed Fagan and other attorneys from class action lawsuits who are pressed to abandon those lawsuits,
• The US financial and anti-trust authorities, among them New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi, who are pressed to approve the merger between Deutsche Bank and Banker’s Trust,
• Stuart Eizenstat, Under Secretary for Economic, Business and Cultural affairs at the US-State Department, who is pressed to legally exclude any further lawsuits from Nazi victims.
Hombach’s mission is to try to pressure the US government for a legal guarantee that German corporations would not be held responsible any longer for the crimes they committed. In return, on February 16, Schroeder and Hombach announced a “fund” for Nazi victims, which would leave some victims with a few hundred dollars each, while ignoring most of them. The proposed deal would mean that in return for starting the Second World War, plundering all of Europe, killing millions of people and using millions more as slaves, the German Pharma-Cartel would be pardoned in return for a donation of a few million dollars and given green light to continue plundering millions of people worldwide by means of a trillion-dollar
pharmaceutical market.
On Thursday, February 11, Germany’s Chancellor Schoeder even had the audacity to meet with President Clinton pressing him to back this remarkable plan. He was not successful.
Lessons to Be Learned for History
There can be no amnesty for Hoechst, Bayer, BASF, the builders of Auschwitz, as long as these corporations continue to commit crimes against humanity.
In the interest of excessive financial gains, these corporations continue to cause unnecessary suffering and premature death of millions of people by maintaining and proliferating diseases in epidemic proportions in order to expand a global pharmaceutical market of over one trillion dollars.
With their plan to ban life-saving health information on vitamins and other natural therapies, they actively prevent the eradication of heart attacks, strokes and other common diseases, the primary cause of which are
vitamin deficiencies.
Hoechst, Bayer, BASF and other members of the international Pharma-Cartel have to be held responsible not only by the survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp, but by millions of patients world-wide who have fallen sick, remained sick or by the relatives of patients who died as the result of known severe side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.
Why We Can Win the Battle Against the Pharma-Cartel
The main reason why we can and will win this battle for a new health care system is that truth is on our side. The Pharma-Cartel can only win if it is able to suppress the truth. We can win if we speak out loudly about the truth. This is true for the historic facts as well as for the current facts presented in this letter. Let’s have a look at the recent years:
• In 1991 I discovered that heart attacks and strokes are no diseases but, similar to scurvy, the result of vitamin deficiencies and therefore preventable. These discoveries are summarized in my book “Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks – But People Do.”
• For the pharmaceutical companies it was clear at that time that the survival of their hundred billion dollar annual market of cardiovascular pharmaceuticals had become dependent on one single factor: how effectively could they prevent the information about this medical breakthrough from spreading.
• It was this medical breakthrough that triggered the fierce attack on nutritional supplements led by the FDA on behalf of the Pharma-Cartel. But they could not win this battle. The people of America won the battle for vitamin freedom culminating in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA).
• Analysts confirmed that the DSHEA of 1994 was the worst defeat in the history of both the FDA and the Pharmaceutical industry. Once again, the moral strength that comes with the truth has prevailed over financial and
political power.
• With the US the largest national market was lost for the Pharma-Cartel, forcing it to turn to the international level. This is the background why the dormant UN Codex Alimentarius Commission was suddenly reactivated in 1995, bringing the center of the global battle for vitamin freedom to Germany.
• In 1996 my book was published in German and in 1997 I moved to Europe to lead the battle against the head of the Pharma-Cartel-hydra directly from its doorstep. We were able to achieve some remarkable accomplishments:
• At the Codex Alimentarius meeting in Berlin, September 21-25, 1998, the Pharma-Cartel was unable to get consensus from the delegates of more than 40 countries. The plan to outlaw natural health information globally had to be postponed to the next meeting in spring 2000. The resistance we had put up before and during the Codex meeting in Berlin, including the
Berlin Tribunal against the Pharma-Cartel, is documented on our Website.
• In the Federal German elections the previous chancellor Helmut Kohl was voted out of office by a landslide defeat. Helmut Kohl was a former lobbyist for the Pharma-Cartel and had been promoted by the Cartel into the highest position of the German government. From there he served the Pharma-Cartel politically for 16 years on the national and international
level.
• Analysts confirmed that our national campaign for vitamin freedom in Germany became the single most important factor in the land slide defeat that washed away not only Helmut Kohl but also the entire previous government.
• On behalf of patients world-wide and to clear up the role of Helmut Kohl as political accomplice for the criminal practices of the Pharma-Cartel I filed a complaint against Kohl for assisting in crimes against humanity and other felonies with the Federal prosecutor in Bonn.
The text of the complaint can be reviewed on our Website and could serve as a starting point for class action lawsuits against the Pharma-Cartel in many countries.
Responsibility of Health Food Stores
During the battle for vitamin freedom in the US from 1992 to 1994, the role of the health food stores can not be overestimated. Thousands of health food stores across America became the locations were information was
disseminated to millions of customers, and they were the coordination points of fighting back the attack of the Pharma-Cartel.
In this battle the health food community gained invaluable experience for the next and decisive stage of the battle. There can be no doubt that the Pharma-Cartel wants to eliminate the natural health sector or confine it to a fringe existence. But the actual role of the health food store is exactly opposite:
Health food stores across America have become the corner stones of a new community-based health care system. By joining the public fight against the Pharma-Cartel at this new and decisive stage, the health food stores of America and beyond will emerge as the natural leaders into a new era of human health. This new health care system will have rid itself from the
yoke of the Pharma-Cartel and will promote the prevention, natural healing and, above all, the eradication of diseases.
What Needs to Be Done Now
There simply can not be amnesty for the organizers of Auschwitz as long as they continue to risk the lives of millions of people worldwide.
The first and foremost task is to inform your customers about these developments and the background. You may copy this Open Letter and hand it to your customers. Your store should become a continuous information center that can serve your customers with information they do not receive anywhere else.
Your customers may also want to take a firm stand on this important issue. Here are some actions that need to be taken up immediately. Make sure your Senator, Congressman and the White House learn about your opinion:
• No legislation can be allowed protecting the organizers of Auschwitz from further lawsuits from their victims
• All talks with German politicians acting on behalf of the Organizers of Auschwitz need to be stopped immediately
• There can be no approval of the merger between Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust designed to pave the way to expand the grip of the German Pharma-Cartel on the American people and businesses. Let your opinion be
known.
• German Chancellor Schroeder, Chief of Staff Hombach and other accomplices of the Pharma-Cartel must be declared undesired persons in America as long as they act as accomplices of the Pharma-Cartel and support Codex Alimentarius. Send them an E-mail at the address below.
• Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF, the organizers of Auschwitz and the spearheads of the international Pharma-Cartel and of Codex Alimentarius must be banned from trading on any US stock exchange. Speak with your political representative, help to make the issue public.
• Consumers in the US and around the world must boycott all products from Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF until these companies have paid due compensation for the past crimes against slave labor victims as well as the other destruction and suffering their action caused across Europe. Inform your friends, neighbors and colleagues about this boycott. Ask local
newspapers to write about it.
• Individual and class action lawsuits must be filed against Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF and other pharmaceutical companies by patients who suffered from severe side effects of drugs marketed by those companies.
• Pharmaceutical companies must open their files on the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs they are selling in order to protect patients from being harmed.
• Write to your political representatives urging them to stop any and all support for the Pharma-Cartel’s plan to restrict health information in relation to vitamins and other natural therapies at the national or international level.
• Write to your political representatives urging them to stop all legislative and regulatory plans undermining the accomplishments of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
• Write to the Commissioner of the FDA, the FTC and inform them that any regulation they issue that complicates the free exchange of life saving information on natural health, is compromising human health and human lives. Any official involved in such measures should be tried for criminal offenses.
• When you deal next time with CRN or any other organizations pretending to represent your interest, have a close look.
I encourage you to join this new stage of fighting the Pharma-Cartel in your own interest for the survival of your health food store, in the interest of your customers and of millions of Americans who are interested
in effective, safe and affordable natural health.
Sincerely yours,
Matthias Rath, M.D.

Another interesting fact about the power of the mind to heal the body is research about the PLACEBO effect. For example, there have been studies that have shown that patients with dementia have regained their memory after given a saline injection, but were told that it was actually medication that would help them regain their memory and cognitive functioning.
