Prayer: Intention or Attention?

Deepak Singh - November 12, 2006

I believe in God and often pray to him (our religion depicts male Gods), for a specific issue, while including others who are undergoing difficulties.
I am also aware of the “Power or Intention” vs. the “Power of Attention”

(as eloquently described in one of the vignettes of Indian mythology where the bad guys wish to embarrass a fair maiden by pulling off her sari, and she holds on to her sari and desperately tries to invoke her God. Eventually she gets frustrated by his absence and lets go, whereupon she find her God in her presence and that her sari has become an endless piece of cloth, with attempts to disrobe her proving to be futile. She asks her God: “Why didn’t you come sooner?”, and he replies “Why didn’t you let go sooner?”).

Now I am a liner thinking person, and I like to be faced by simple choices. Should I:

a. Continue with my detailed prayers and thus maintain my “attention”, or,
b. Just bring all who I am thinking about to my awareness and thus have a level of “intent”, or,
c. Be the ultimate hands-off guy and convince my self that the decisive power of intention is just to seed the thought and let go?

Seed the thought, and let go....(wink)

Hi Deepak,

They (others who are undergoing difficulties)will need to pray/create/ask (whatever you want to call it) for themselves because they know what they need/want/desire.

I assume they are also praying for what they want? If God/source energy is not responding to them then how are you going to get it for them?

I know that you do love these people and God/Source energy is responding to your attention on this subject so you will get more of others who are undergoing difficulties.

The quality of the focus of intention is what matters.

If prayer focuses your intention more effectively, then it is the right thing.

Part of the power in prayer comes from projecting out that Existence can be related to as if it were a person. While this may or may not be true, most people find it easier to have more intensity of they believe they are communicating with a living being, than trying to manipulate an abstraction of some sort.

Prayer may also be effective not because it operates some outer power to go do our will, but because it causes an inner shift. As we change, the way we relate to the world changes, and that in turn changes the results that we get.

For example, you may not be able to change someone else's behavior, but by changing the way you see and respond to them, suddenly you notice they are responding to you differently too.

Things like forgiveness, compassion, meditation, and prayer do not change the outer world. They change our inner world. Then the way we act in the world changes, and that in turn brings new and different feedbacks from the outer world.

That is why it is said that real change comes from the inside and flows out from us.

It is also good to let go of your intention after you have been focusing it.

Like a flower - you plant it, water it, and then leave it alone. If you are digging it up constantly to see if its growing, or watering it constantly, you'll kill it.

The proper technique is to focus, let it go, do what is proper to maintain the project as it grows, but do not obsess or worry over it.

The "Smother Mother" effect can be as bad in its own way as ignoring or denying something that needs attention.
