In Borat, Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (it just isn't the same if you don't list the entire title), Borat makes it to an evangelical church where fervent believers speak in tongues. When the mood takes him, and he himself starts speaking in tongues ("alalalalalala"), the movie reaches one of its most ludicrously funny points.

But, according to the NY Times, he is making fun of a real scientific phenomenon ("is not a funny good time?", asks borat)

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues and found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet, as were the language centers. The regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were active. The women were not in blind trances, and it was unclear which region was driving the behavior.

Just when you think a topic is totally safe to make fun of, they hit you with science. I hope snake-handling is still safe for ridicule.

But, the point is, speaking in tongues is real. It happens during intense spiritual experience. It happens unconsciously, during a trance-like state.

It can also happen unexpectedly...witness Virginia Senator Allen potentially costing the Republican Party its Senate majority (fingers crossed) during one such bout (unlike Borat, his tongue did not go "lalalalala"...it was more like "macacacacacaca"...for he is truly a man of God) ; >

Interesting article, Sandeep. Borat has definitely got a lot of attention but I still have no idea what his movie is all about...
Definitely a potential scientific excuse here for Senator Allen after a big loss!

Crisis of conscience.

During the recent US mid term elections I had a crisis of conscience in terms of willing to look at George Allen’s controversial comments and his personal crisis on being exposed of his Jewish roots. For days I toiled with the idea of writing a letter of support and would frame words every day, hoping to bring some relief to him. But some how the purported letter did not materialize saving my from any controversy rising from it. But now all of it is over I wish him, so that he could receive all the help in order for him to be free of prejudices and hopefully, he would be a good leader who not only understands complex human conditions and but also will have the wisdom to see the world beyond race and other such discriminations.

sandeep, u seem to have combined so many different issues in this article...
borat though , does seem like an intelligent comedy ( does seem to expose the ignorance of some american ppl).. all my friends like it, really gotta go watch it this weekend!

Mallika, u definitely gotta watch the youtube videos of borat .. just goto youtube.com and search for "borat"... some of them might be a little offensive for conservative people.. he pretends to be this ignorant man from kazakhastan who knows nothing about american life, he goes around talking to these americans and its interesting to see how americans treat him! If you search for him on wikipedia.com, you will find borat dictionary .. which translates some of the slangs he uses ;)

Thanks for the comment regarding Allen's Jewish roots being exposed...brings even greater relevance to my random inclusion of the Borat movie and lingering prejudices against Jews around the world. That was definitely unfortunate. However, his slip-up exposes a willingness to use racism for political purposes...not fitting of a Congressman and especially not a President.

Also, if his loss is confirmed, it brings visibility to the Indian American community during a time when we desperately need it. Hate crimes may continue as long as terrorism is misunderstood, but at least we get vindication when that same prejudice is exposed in the political arena (thans, YouTube).
