Indians have some pretty wild name combos too! ...and hgquinn, taking a photograph of a publically displayed ID in a public taxi in the United States is not illegal.

Let me state that another way -- drop the issue of legality, as posting photos of others' ID's on the web is too new to have become a legal thing, probably.

Instead, think about what this says about social sensitivity and compassion. Think of what this says about your willingness to protect others' privacy.

If Phat Tran (the names on licenses are last name, first name) were your friend, and he left his personal photo ID lying on a table in his house, and you were visiting, would you snap a pic with your cellphone, and post it on a widely-visited blog without first asking him if it was OK?

If you wouldn't do that, then why would you do this to a cab driver?

If someone snapped a pic of your license or photo ID or passport, and put it on the web, wouldn't it upset you? If it would, then why would you do this to someone else?

It's my guess that if your license had been posted by someone else, you'd be trying to get it off the web, and you might resort to legal pressure to do so.

A cab driver probably won't find out, and if he did, he wouldn't have the power or money to try to protect himself. But why should those considerations that make him vulnerable to having his name, photo and license number exposed on the web? Workers deserve dignity and privacy, just as more fortunate citizens or visitors do.

Saira, you could have written about this, rather than putting up a photo of the man's license.

Marek, you admire Saira greatly for her beauty and her readiness to shock gently, just as many of us do. You're also IB's resident legal mind and you have a lot of compassion. You can see both sides of this issue clearly, I'm sure. It would be interesting to read your take on this issue.

Saira and all, my thoughts on this assume the picture wasn't photoshopped. I live in NYC, and this looks like a genuine cellphone pic of a real license to me, but I may be wrong. If so, take this as what my reaction would be if the license photo were real.

Saira, let me be a more clear -- it's the publishing of the photo on the web without the owner's permission that I'm talking about -- not the actual existence of the photo, but its use here.
