Obsessed

Gotham Chopra - January 15, 2007

Truth be told, I'm much more of a sports guy than celebrity guy. For example, I would have moved heaven and Earth yesterday to watch a football playoff game but I could care less about adjusting around the broadcast of the Golden Globe awards show just down the street from where I live.

It's a bit ironic because the awards show is probably more relevant to my work than the football game to which I hae absolutely no connection. And yet, I am already navigating my week around next Sunday's game pitting my hometown Patriots against their rival the Colts.

The reason I'm writing about this is because I think our recreational obsessions tell us a lot about ourselves. Not only am I generally not a fan of hollywood awards shows (though I do have an odd fascination with celebrity gossip aka US magazine), something about them makes me resentful. There's just something about the insularness of celebrity culture that annoys me.

Meanwhile, sports culture is something that I am so entirely remote for and yet I find that I have an intense emotional - even tribal - attachment to the games. Maybe it's my own competitiveness that I somehow subject onto the games I watch on television, maybe it' s nostalgia, harkening back to a time where I aspired to be a great athlete. There's definately an escapism to the whole thing.

Speaking of films though, I did see an awesome movie this weekend named CHILDREN OF MEN. That's a great film, a ratther Orwellian vision of a fascist future. You don't see films like this very often any more and I strongly recommend it.

I'm curious what others find themselves obsessed with and if they've done any of analysis of it.

Over and out.

o.k.
Now I ponder my obession,
and it's
complicated
but ...
rewarding!

Cup-cakes...yummmy.....
National Enquirer
Trash cable TV
Crime Thrillers, especially Prime Suspect, Helen Mirren is my heroine
Inane inebriated conversations about life in seedy bars-lol
Bad boys (tongue in cheek)
and every vice that's bad for you....

What does that tell me about myself...mmmmmm that I like small pleasures in life? :-)or that I'm sad!

I'm obsessed with Clive Owen.

In that case-I'm obsessed with James Purefoy-I think he's the most handsome man on the planet....sigh...

Hi Gotham!
Interesting post about sports and obsessions. I am actually a retired professional athlete Gotham. I just teach the sports I love and personal train in my advancing age now. I'll give you my take. Think about the the great things recreational sports have given to the world. Teamwork, comraderie, friendships, self esteem, health and fitness, (pure joy) etc! You could almost go as far as to say (recreational) sports have done more good than organized religion. As for me I have gained all of those things I mentioned and more! Without sports, health and fitness to ground me to this world I would have already (floated away) to another reality! Even competitiveness can be experienced as a way to challenge oneself. I suggest you try to make a focused observation of what is attracting you to sports and (fulfill that desire) in some way. Good luck!

Hi Gotham, my obsession is admiring the beauty of women. Nothing comes more naturally to me than just dwelling on her beauty. I fail to understand what it is about me or them that creates this amazing attraction. I enjoy the attraction and yet it is so painful because I cannot even express to many that I find them so beautiful much less touch them or love them. I think I want to live forever just to love women. Even that may not be enough for her enchanting ways are so myriad and so infinite. I feel so sad and little sometimes faced with such an awesome thing as her. Am I just full of unnatural lust? Am I an antisocial who must choke my feelings of joy and pleasure to conform to the ways of society? Do most men feel this way but are unable to express for the above reason? Are females a universal symbol of love and beauty and joy or is this just one man's selfish perspective? So many questions...and life goes on...far removed from sports...just this very existential obsession!

xyz.. the secret, is to not put a woman on a high-maintenance pedestal for her; such as I mean, maintaining youth, beyond human natural aging process, and a wholesome discipline.

most women, see the reaction of men, long before the men even know they are acting.. a mans eyes reveals so many secrets of himself to a woman with inuitive maturity...

for a woman, to be viewed as only an icon of beauty/perfection/lust.. is to her, often an insult of her intelligence(wink)although I must add, there are plenty of women; who adore vanity-praise.

with loving kindness, beauty is a label, and politically incorrect(wink)

I'm from Poland, you know..
;)

So, the thing is, i have been brought up a certain way, some call it passion, some obsession,
some neuroses, some psychoses.. it all depends..

How much you pay your..
;)
it's a polish thing..
sure..

No, but seriously,

1. When you're male, you need to kick butt! choose your arena..

Paul the apostle wrote something about his legacy,

Paul wrote the Bible (meaning the New Testament letters that he did write).

The Lord too approved of Him. In his last letter, written around A.D. 67 before Nero martyred him, he wrote:

'..I have fought the good fight; I have finished the course;
I have kept the faith.
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, with which the Lord, the righteous judge, will recompense me in that day, and not only me but also all those who have loved His appearing.

2. You choose a worthy cause,

3. You get the (Playboy) bunny..

(a bottle of Wodka, if you..;)

Love, Passion,
marek

'Borat's' acceptance speech was brilliant! It doesnt get any better than that. Wonder if anyone has 'youtube-it' yet. I could watch that over and over again! That was worth the two hours I essentially wasted watching the darn show. Ah guilty pleasures.

Gosh maria luisa, I just about died from laughing during Borat's acceptance speech!! Brilliant!! I was actually happy to see him win!!

Did Deepa Mehta win for "Water"? I hope so, I loved it, watched it 3 times. I missed some of the show, when chattin with my son in gmail chat(both newbies to it)!! almost 2 hours lastnight!

Hi North, thanks for your insights (as a woman).

As a man, I know the extreme desires for women is coded into me so hard, it has spurred me onto asking the deepest questions about myself and existence. And this has been going on for many many years.

I am sure she is the one who moves inside me. She makes me breath, walk, talk. She is the mover of my thoughts and action. I get so drunk on her and yet I want more of her. It appears sometimes like I want to become her for she is the only thing that exists, rest all are 'she' in motion. Even me.

With my eyes open, sometimes, everything I see looks unseen and I only feel--her. Am I just obsessed with 'women' in a materialistic sense or she birthed me to know Her and that's all there is to it....?

Thanks North for turning (leading) me on :)

Stated quite well, xyz!! You are a part of the feminine, and perhaps you are only in tune to her essence....

XYZ..here is a Dali quote for you, which I usually apply to myself :-)

'There is only one difference between a madman and me - The madman thinks he is sane - I know I am mad ... '

Its good to have self-belief-no? :-)

Well mate, I'm obsessed with "Killing", sorry I know that sounds sick and straight forward but we are talking about movies aren't we Goth, I feel the same about Holywood and I'm an Australian and that doesn't say much I know but you know it's these good old movies like Predator and Arnie going at it that just really make me boil because I'd like to see the humans lose for once, we have such survival instinct and mode made into our movies, like Aliens trilogies for example, for once I'd like to see the Alien win!
