Why Robots Love Music (Part 1)

Deepak Chopra - February 26, 2007

The media have been eagerly reporting on advances in brain research and genetics, in part because everyone is hungry for scraps of good news. In a larger sense these areas of science are also immensely confident and hopeful. They are the finger posts to a future without disease, a time when age-old mysteries about human nature will be explained once and for all. I recently saw a television report on neurologists investigating the mystery of music, why it exists and how we respond to it.

My reaction to this report came in two parts: fascination at the ingenuity of the research and frustration that it's taking knowledge down the wrong path. Let me fill in both.

Researchers at McGill University in Toronto have been hooking up subjects as they listen to music. As one would predict, various parts of the brain light up in response to music, and through MRIs and other forms of brain imaging, it's been determined that music creates its own pattern of response. Raw input that reaches the auditory center in the cortex, responsible for interpreting all sounds, gets scattered to specific locations where rhythm, tempo, melody, timbre, etc. are separately processed in a matter of milliseconds. The prefrontal cortex even compares the music you are hearing now to music you expect to hear from past experience. By comparing the two, your brain can be surprised by something it never expected to hear, and further this can be a delightful surprise or a distasteful one.

All of this extremely complex communication between tiny areas of the brain goes on unconsciously, but without it, music would be just random noise. You may claim that your feel music in your soul, your heart, your gut. In fact, your total response is neurological. The research also shows that the brain gets "hard wired" in childhood according to what system of music you are exposed to. A Chinese baby's brain develops specific connections that respond to Chinese harmony, thus leading to its enjoyment. A baby born in the East, exposed to Western harmonies, is hard wired to enjoy that system but not the Chinese, and vice versa. Finally, the researchers could take a musical performance and gradually change it via computer software to see if the brain notices any difference. As the music became more mechanical and less personal, for example, the brain often didn't notice any difference until the change was glaringly obvious. This might explain "tin ears" and other, subtler abilities to detect the finer points of musical style.

All of this is moderately fascinating. It mostly corroborates things known to common sense and ordinary observation already. A million-dollar MRI machine wasn't needed to tell us that our brains respond in various ways to music, or that one person's response isn't the same as another's, or that Chinese music generally grates on Western ears. But the promissory note is a big one. As with so much brain research, we are told that these are early days. Give the scientists time and they will unravel everything about music. In particular, they will answer why music developed in the evolutionary scheme of things to become encoded in our genes. Apparently every age, going back as far as history is measured, has contained some form of music. Why did evolutionary forces favor this behavior as a survival mechanism? Between them, brain researchers, geneticists, and evolutionary biologists will provide a definitive answer in the foreseeable future.

In the next post I'd like to argue why this whole scheme of looking at music is wrong-headed and will yield no answers that get near the truth. The current connection between music and the brain is useful only if the listener is a robot with a robotic brain. That's exactly the model being used here, and no amount of passing fascination makes it anything but what it is: inhuman to the core.

Hi Deepak,

Music is a sound.

A hetrosexual will find the beautiful voice of opposite sex as music.

A nature lover would find the chirping of birds and coos of koel as music.

Some may find the first rain drops falling as music.

Many find the sound of OM / AUM as music.

I think all music are not for robots.

Music provided by nature is for human.

An animal lover would like the dogs bark as music, another who is afraid of dog would not like it.

Some birds have musical sounds and they are so sweet.

Natural music is for Human, if robot wants to enjoy it let them enjoy.

Your disciple
With lots of Love

How very strange. My first thought upon reading "research also shows that the brain gets "hard wired" in childhood according to what system of music you are exposed to." was a memory of waking up in my bedroom at 5. My sisters were teenagers and getting ready for school. The lyrics were fire, fire, I am the God of hell fire and I beg you to burn. I laid there and stared at the psychadelic black light castle poster on the wall.

Knowing what I know now about the people who taught psychadelic art ... inhuman to the core. Absolutely.

Luckily I'm quite sure I at least enjoyed Christmas carols before rock and roll.

Deepak! You've utterly lost it! I just actually read your 'Why Did I Do That' post! Here's what you said:

"..no mass murderer has come within miles of ending as many lives as a wartime President does."

How blatantly wrong do you have to be, Deepak, for shame, or concern for academic reputation, or for your own self-respect for goodness sake, to give you sufficient pause to consider the content of what you're about to post? No mass murderer has ended, or even come close to ending, as many lives as a wartime President?! Are you truly that ignorant of world history? You expect your readers to believe that you've never heard of Hitler, nor Stalin, nor Mao? A ten-year-old child has heard of these historical figures, Deepak, and knows that they each murdered millions.

Why do you insist on leading your readers to conclude, as many here have said they recently have, that you care about one thing above all others: posting ridiculously inflammatory statements in the hopes of drawing traffic to your blog.

Has it come to this for you? You used to be a decent writer. What happened, Deepak?

Deepak,

I think what you are saying is: An MRI machine can not explain why
Ray Charles has the best most soulful voice ever nor can it explain why hearing it makes me feel a certain way.
The MRI machine does not factor in the humanity of the listener nor does it take into account the humanity of the musician/singer/songwriter. Therefore it can't really investigate what it is trying to investigate.

Indeed music is spiritual and can even bring us closer to G-d some would say, it must have something to do with the universal hum, or the cosmic background radiation . . .

But what I hate beyond measure, another indication of how corrupt and anti-
Christ capitalism is; is when I hear my favorite rock and roll anthem being played on TV to catch my attention to that new SUV commercial, or that trip to Vegas where what happens there stays there --

Vegas! Emblamantic of what is wrong with our species, and to think a gambling empire could make a person richer than Bill Gates . . .

I guess in this human wasteland of me-ness & cunsumption we all get fooled all of the time!

Peace

Dear Deepak

What is music to you?

Yo Deepak
Why do we need to scientifically prove the obvious?
Why do we have to have scientific proof that there is a spiritual world?
Why do we need spiritual proof that there is a scientific world.

I have enjoyed music all my life and I create music. I play several instruments but I've never taken lessons. It just comes out of me. I didn't need a scientist to learn to understand music. Whether I'm playing an instrument or listening to some one elses music it has nothing to do with why it is music or how it is music.

Explanations and theories take us further from the obvious.

derek

Empyrius, you are such a joy!!! I just had a big laugh thanks to you. :)

I have no idea why robots love music, Deepak,
I'm still figuring out, girls and such..;)

Dear Deepak,

I look forward to the next installment of this subject.

Did you know people from cultures where languages employ tonal differences (as some Asian languages) are far more likely to be "pitch perfect."

My mother played classical music, and the popular music of her day. I love the music evolution of the 60's, much of it sings to my heart. But more than anything the first time I heard Flamenco I knew I had to learn to play that music. Flamenco is linked to the Romany gypsies in Europe, and from there to India where the gypsies originated. So why would I have such a pull, a compulsion to play? Inexplicably it brings peace to my heart. I have attributed my interest to some other lifetime, but that would not be a hard wire, it would be soft. A memory floating on the wind.

>>The current connection between music and the brain is useful only if the listener is a robot with a robotic brain. That's exactly the model being used here, and no amount of passing fascination makes it anything but what it is: inhuman to the core.

Ahhhhhh!!! Don't you all love this bottom line! :)

buzka,
marek

Here is what it is. The 3 Angels of Light:

"Jean Francois" playing the harp and bringing stunning poetic music to the environemt.

"Empyrius" does his awesome bold acrobacies in the air, like in an imaginary circus, without the rope.

"Diablo" graciously plays the little devil and makes the public burst into subtle laughter and joy.

I have no doubt that you guys are angels. I am serious. :)

We are not really hard wired that much in the childhood. It is possible to learn to enjoy all music in later life since all music obey the same rules of easthetics. Music is like mathematics in this respect. All mathematics is united around numbers. The observable universe obeys mathematics and it looks more and more like a huge piece of music as reserach unfolds. Music is not an exclusive realm of humans. All animals enjoy music. I would also say all universe enjoys it.

This is also related to the central point of artificial intelligence. Can AI have consciousness? If so can it also enjoy music? I would say yes. Deepak, I read your latest book Life After Death and enjoyed it a lot. I also believe, or want to believe, that we have spirits and we are immortal. We have consciousness and we enjoy music because of our spirits. I believe that when we develop complex enough machines, there will always be spirits wanting to claim them and thus help them have consciousness. The background "spirit field" would see no difference between naturally evolved machines and the machines that thay make. After all the invisible universe obviously couples to the visible one, through ways that we do not know how to measure yet. Rajesh Sharma may have a point when he says "Natural music is for Human, if robot wants to enjoy it let them enjoy".

I am currently reading Into The Cool by Schneider and Sagan. Pretty good. It is about Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics or NET. It claims that the inanimate and animate are intimately linked. A sign of what is to come with the long awaited scientific unification.

Hi Akira Bergman,

This is your line, get it trade marked and copyright. I enjoyed it.

"Music is like mathematics in this respect".

Thanks for your lovely diagnosis of Music.

Lots of love
Rajesh Sharma

I too second Rajesh on this Akira. "If the robots want to enjoy, let them enjoy".

Rajesh: In joint collaboration with akira, shall we write a book nonequilibrium of the human mind? You're personally very experienced in this, you lead the way for us in this venture.:-)

"The research also shows that the brain gets "hard-wired" in childhood according to what system of music you are exposed to."
Every person has a way that defines who they are to others; each one has walked today a separate path to this place - so the delusion of language is also the delusion of self. Zhuangzi knew what fish were thinking, and dreamed he was a butterfly (?). This concerns the transformation of things.

Hi Hasela,

You make me laugh a lot in non-equilibrium way. (not wave now)

You are a good editor. You must be author of many books with creative ideas like Steven Speilberg.

Thanks
Lots of Love
Lots of Laughs
Rajesh Sharma

"Natural music is for Human, if robot wants to enjoy it let them enjoy".

Hahaha - you walked into this one with your eyes wide open:

Kraftwerk: We Are The Robots
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo0iW0B0lI4

Someone please explain why this song is one of pop music's greatest hits. Kraftwerk came to Seattle last year and they were treated like gods. All electronica gurus bow down before them, and this song, more than any other, has become the very anthem of electronica.

My question is: why do humans enjoy robot music so much? Why did Tomita have to re-do Holsts "The Planets" all with synthesizers? What's up with "Switched on Bach?"

The natural music is for humans?

Huh?

What's natural for humans is to tweak everything we can get our freakin' hands on, and figure out a way to create in the physical world the images in our minds.
And 99% of the time we use a machine to do that. And if the machine doesn't exist, we'll invent it, no problem!

Humans LOVE machines! Attend any antique car show, computer gadget convention, or inventor's conference, and you will be swamped by thousands of passionate machine worshippers. And don't even get me started on Harley freaks - Oh My Gawd! These people will keep you up to sunrise with reverent testimony to the wonders of a well-built engine.

Is it any wonder that Deep Purple's greatest selling album is called "Machine Head?"

And how about all that New Age relaxation music? Most of it is done with instruments that are in fact called "workstations" like Korgs and Rolands and such. From what I can see the New Age musicians are total gadget heads.

Sorry, man. Y'all lost me on this one. We got famous musicians on this blog - what do some of them have to say? Dave - come on man, how much time have you spent in front of MACHINES tweaking every aspect of a song, for crying out loud? Derrick???

OK, enough ranting for tonight. I can't wait for part two. I might have to get a new machine to experience the sequel to this!

Right now I gotta get back over to my machines so I can program up some natural music on them, if you know what I mean....

But first this, lest anyone forget the sacred connection between humans, music, machines, and yes - sex!

James Brown: Sex Machine live!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkGg3XkN80U

LOL :-)) Good one yogi-one. We are largely machines man! (or woman!, doesn't matter) Just look at the way we move. One leg after another, with arms balancing them alternatively, sooo funny when you think about it. Look at the way we have sex. In-out-in-out and so on until the big noise (usually from the man first -and last-). I guesss we like machines also because they are honest in being machines and don't pretend like we do. They are cool :-))

Hi Deepak,
I agree with your observation "The current connection between music and the brain is useful only if the listener is a robot with a robotic brain. That's exactly the model being used here, and no amount of passing fascination makes it anything but what it is: inhuman to the core." I tend to think that in general, the way brain scientists detect brain's response today, not only to music but to say, humor, sarcasm, or anything at all, is not essentially different from the techniques engineers use to detect responses in a robotic brain. Only the instruments used to do the detection are different (brain versus robot). Common sense tells us that there is something called experience in a human brain which is not in a robot's brain. Do our brain scientists explain that difference today?

Angel DMR?!? Nay! Perhaps an ambassador from the furthest regions of the unseen heavens who like John the Baptist prepared the way for one far greater than the angels themselves by inflaming the minds of men ~~ empyrius ~~ with the promise of a better life for us all.

And did He mind his own business as he forsook his own family . . .

Strange no? Yeah . . .

Well, I thought that I was praising you, empyrius! Angels are like innocent little children. It's like my cats, they fill my life with joy!!! They are the purest creatures I can think of, the best of the best! And miraculously, they love us! But maybe you don't see angels that way...

Remember when I started posting here and you told me that you hated yourself sometimes? I keep thinking everytime I see one of your posts, what a world full of contradictions and incoherencies this is. You are awesome! :)

dear doctor chopra:

the first paragraph of this post contains the phrase 'future without disease'.

it got me to thinking....

if there is a future without disease, can the earth sustain the massive population that would entail?

isn't disease, in a way, a righting, a balance factor against an all too massive population.

i mean, we're already at what... 6+billion.

my mother died of cancer 6 years ago, and while i miss her, i don't know if i can place a judgement on disease as something that is inherently bad.

what do we do when no one dies?

sincerely,

Yo - Mitch_Wilkers: Howz about you leave my boy Deepak alone aw I slap yo azz about!!!

Deepak is a sun of spiritual energy, providing millions of souls with nourishment, light, insight, inspiration, love and liberation. Deepak Chopra has touched my heart and assisted me in the freedom of my shackled consciousness, and the expansion of my spiritual wisdom!!!

How can any person say something as horrible as "you've completely lost it" to someone so beautiful. I'm tired of critics! Why are people so cold, critical, nasty, bitchy? That synical, harsh energy projected by people is simply an expression of their own divine discontent. You are irritated by peoples traits when you aren't willing to accept those traits in yourself - when you feel inadequate- inferior.

Yes, war time presidents aren't the only mass murderers throughout history. So what? Deepak doesn't feel the need to be so shallow by analysing and filtering everything he says out of fear that some bitch will take a bite at him for it! Truly evolved souls don't feel the need to worry about the effect their words will have over people.

Here's a message for all people - Use that twisted, critical energy in a loving way to review yourself and focus on your own personal development/evolution. Stop reinforcing your SEPARATENESS, LET GO, return to the source, calm down, focus on the now... You will find that all the fulfillment you need is right here with you, right now.

Mitch_Wilkers - you say that Deepak used to be a decent writer. Get off your butt and read the new book "power freedom and grace." It's the most amazing book I've ever read.

Well you have made me blush DMR!

As far as hating myself only sometimes . . .

I just resigned to hating myself all of the time, tis much easier! Har har har . . .

Turned 40 yesterday. Getting fat (and I used to be an active good looking guy). Lost me Linda permanently it looks like. I refuse to work at McDonalds. As soon as me mother loses her house in the next month I shall probably be homeless for the rest of my life (so iffin you ever visit Spokane, WA and see a straggly-haired dude with a sign saying 'will philosophize for beer,' please hook me up with some dollars/change).

I am just a Christian Anarchist lost in the land of capitalism U.S.A., unable to make any meaning in life anymore . . .

O woe is me! Har har har

Anyway, what was that saying, 'better to have loved and lost rather than never having loved at all . . .'

Peace

Christian anarchist lost in capitalism or not, you bring LIGHT to this planet.

That to me is your hidden purpose on this stage called life. :)

DMR

Now I feel like the cowardly lion when he humbly says, 'uhh schucks . . .'

Peace my friend

Interesting post by Deepak on music, which causes me to ponder.

I believe that the Universe is musical and naturally plays music to us all the time. If we listen, we can hear the most beautiful angelic music ever sang or played on an instrument. And if we listen even closer, we can hear the words of the music. I think this must be from the heart of God, because when one listens, they can feel the great power of Love.

Love, Char
