Do you have a minute to save the world?

Mallika Chopra - May 29, 2007

Every time I walk out of my local Whole Foods, there is a young, wide-eyed, optimistic activist asking for signatures on a petition. It just takes a minute to save rainforests, whales, protect the ozone, etc. Just sign here! Likewise, I get

emails daily to sign something, pass it on to others, send it to Congress, etc.

Generally, it is an enthusiastic college kid outside Whole Foods or knocking on my door. The foot soldiers determined to make our world a better place. I used to be one of them, but alas, I feel now it takes more than just a minute, a signature... I am always rushing somewhere and cant take that minute!! Should I feel totally guilty?

Does it really just take a minute to save the planet?

Of course! One signature. One minute. that's it! We can save the world, not only save but make it a paradise. all we need is some signatures. hyp, plz come quickly and sign.

thx.

"Does it really just take a minute to save the planet? "

In comparison it takes a second to destroy the planet.

So that means you're not signing hyp? :-)

"Does it really just take a minute to save the planet? "

It is advertisement or propaganda attempting to save a nano fraction of the planet's diversity and stability, in reality.

It's like a child watch an advertisement, or a cartoon on TV and ask, "Does eating spinach really give you superhero strength?"

a good question...

for starters...

we can begin to save what's left of our fragile planet if we all stopped driving cars, flying in airplanes, riding buses, slashing and burning down our forests and pouring poison in our waterways...seas, rivers, lakes etc....it would take a global effort to get the ball rolling and stay rolling...damn!

Nope..no sign...

I am a member of a few world environment, wild life and green peace organisations and I know people who do real work...although it is important to bring public awareness through signature campaigns, it is expected that people are grown up to know that it is an awareness campaign than believing in the tall claims of saving the planet.

nano fraction hyp? that's huge!!! nano nano nano nano nano times. Why are you not listening to me? Sign and everthing will be fine.

Yes, Eating spinach really gives you Superhero strength! One by one, if everyone starts signing and eating a bundle of Spinach everynt before they go to bed, there will be the dawn of superhero strength, and that is how the whole world will change(incl the middle east):-))

Second question?

How long would it take to balance our power to willfully manipulate our environment, to reshape our world toward greater perfection and harmony with the love needed in order to have the ability to see and feel the beauty that lies at the heart of all our interconnections with others and with life in us and around us?

A second, a minute? Something to think about. Yes?

Bonnie

Not even a second BB!! Less than a nano second. don't say nah nah to this. ok? say han han! I'm writing a book Bonnie in collaboration with Ratna
"How to change the world in nanoseconds?" That Ratna is too greedy in making money, he may not be interested, even though he is very good at such things. Are you interested Bonnie to work with me to write such a book?? We can change the world, think about it. are you done with the closet now? ;-)

"I used to be one of them, but alas, I feel now it takes more than just a minute, a signature... I am always rushing somewhere and cant take that minute!! Should I feel totally guilty?"

I think you should feel guilt(not totally guilty...that is extreme talk and better avoided).

You will not feel so guilty if you do some help(monetary, if you have a busy life) to some cause of wildlife or environmental issues to bring a real difference. You can then follow the progress of the project...say to save an endangered specie or planting trees in barren lands...or help the political and awareness campaigns of an environmental organization.

Ricky

I just now thought of another way!! We could market spiritual clothes! When you get tired of the old ones, just buy some new ones. Instant enlightment! No trouble at all. Now, how do you think that would go over? LOL

Bonnie

Hypocrit

Re#10---that is all good as long as you can stand the heat of being called an "enviro-nazi"

Bonnie

So, some polish girl, calls me, cute voice, but than again she's polish..

anyhow, she has a dutch labor law case, so I understood, can you come to my office at the end of the week, I say, 'but I just want to get paid and get on the bus back to poland!!", she says pretty loud, ohh.. 'ok, can you come tomorrow at 5?' 'how much does it cost?', 'the first consult is always free' i say, we'll see, her dutch employer is pretty much a moron, that i can say, for sure, the rest is..

can she bake a cheesecake..;)

love, Passion,

"that is all good as long as you can stand the heat of being called an "enviro-nazi"

You have a choice: Don't feel guilty!

You can't have the best of both worlds.

Dear Ricky

Re my #11, we could even get the scientists to help us mfg. some of that new nano material, and build in little computer chips to measure our progress and if we backslide it will give us a little electro shock. What do you think? ;-)

Bonnie

Dear Hypocrit

I have been called an enviro-nazi many times. I just laugh. Also, while it does help to give money to environmental groups, and think they will surely solve the problems, it will not get the job done in the long run.

Bonnie

BB: I knew you were a bb, but I didn't know you could be this Ingenious. My god. Spiritual clothes. Backslide was Awesome BB! How do you get such Ideas? Electric shock?? you have some sunni friends?? Talking in extreme. Just little beeps may be fine. no? Yes, for the tougher skins, clothes with those chips with shock. Yes yes, you're rt without shock people won't move fwd, they will go back and forth. LOL!

Hi Mallika - I think you need a helper. Need a secretary? :)

"Also, while it does help to give money to environmental groups, and think they will surely solve the problems, it will not get the job done in the long run."

Never delude yourself that some actions will SURELY solve a problem. Find the best bet.. and do it. It is better than doing nothing. or feeling guilty.

Hyp: People love to make tall claims!! They love to live in a lala land! Rosy Rosy! no thorns, only Roses. by making tall claims and making lofty goals, imagining it to be real, they create their own reality. You also can do that, if you desire to, that is!!

lala.. we will save the world...oh oh we will save the world...lala the world is going to be fine. lala! Just sing like this Hyp and you will be fine and as you're so will be the world(incl the middle east) :-)

It is also important that you choose the issue you are going to help. You can't help save the planet but you can do your part in a narrow scope in a cause that may be close to your heart. Donate money to the improvement of the local habitat in your county or to the rehabilitation of animals in their natural habitat... or do your part by living green etc.

Dear Hypocrit

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not deluded at all regarding my actions toward the environment. I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I have to remember to make myself more transparent when writing on the internet.

Bonnie

A thought occurred to me Ricky, what if in a hypothetical scenario, some military pentagon dictatorship comes to power in USA and chooses to deport all non-USA born immigrants/citizens to their country of origin.

What will the Indian American community do...back in India? I guess they would raise their voice against the injustice. What will the Patels, Reddys and Chopras do? Will they do something for their motherland or keep talking and writing books and articles about the injustices done to them? Will these people spread their spiritual ideas in India or seek spiritual consolation?....wondering.

"Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not deluded at all regarding my actions toward the environment. I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I have to remember to make myself more transparent when writing on the internet."

Bonnie

I think I should do the same. I did mean that "you" are deluded. "Never delude yourself" is a phrase I would use in the context even if I don't address anyone in particular.

And frankly it can be said that most of us are deluded in our beliefs at some point of time. We can't be awake all the time. That would mean enlightenment of Buddha.

Oops! correction: "I did NOT mean that "you" are deluded."

Anyone who truly believe that their actions will SURELY solve a problem(environmental) is deluded.

You've the ability to make me think hyp!! Wait! am still thinking. The patels will open up new businesses here for sure. The rest will definitely write books and articles on the Injustice meted out and make money out of it. They will deeply introspect over and find out where the opportunities are and make money out of it.

Plz sign and Save the world!! for god's sake! LOL!

Catch you tomorrow hyp,bb!!

pizza and/or beer anyone? damn!

Diablo

I am on my way to Whole Foods now,(Maybe I will donate $2 to something or other) but wanted to tell you before I go----better stock up on your beer supply before it is too expensive to buy.

Bonnie

Mallika,

No, it doesn't take a minute to save the planet...it takes a second...maybe a micro-second. Maybe the speed of light. If we are connected in a force field of electro-magnetic energy all things are possible if we turn up the love.

My energy has been lightened by another person's warm words, smile and on the I-5 freeway by that person who slows down to let me in. Have we lost our threads of connection? Eye to eye. heart to heart, word to word? It only takes a minute...a second...to slow down, BE and connect NOW.

Lets turn up the Love, shall we!
V

Relatively, who's or what's minute are we talking about?

dude really needs to get laid! damn!

I don't know if it takes a minute, hour or a decade but kudos to those kids for atleast trying and spreading awareness. As for feeling guilty that's totally your call.

I think the #11 post is funny.Instant enlightenment sounds cool.I'm so up for it,where can I find the spiritual merchandise?..Really good one bonnie.

I am very excited to see this topic discussed, for I have been moved to tears and laughter by Paul Hawken's amazing new book, "Blessed Unrest, How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw it Coming". This largest movement is the more than one million Non-Governmental Organizations working from the bottom up to make the evolutionary changes necessary to save our planet.

I was a lit major, but have not been moved so much by a book since puberty. One sentence to show the confluence of the earth, human rights and spirit: "According to immunologist Gerald Callahan, faith and love are literally buried in our genes and lymphocytes, and what it takes to arrest our descent into chaos is one person after another remembering who and where they really are."
Each time we donate our $2 or sign a petition, we remember who we really are. That's why we do it.

Please visit this site for a short clip about the movement:
http://www.blessedunrest.com/video.html

And an article by Paul in Orion magazine on the same topic as the book.
http://www.orionmagazine.org/index.php/articles/article/265

Then go to the astounding WIKI website:
www.wiserearth.org
to sign up your organization and find out what others are doing to make the changes to bring our world back into balance.

Well.. at the end of the day..

1. She didn't show up

Dear Lizzie Upitis

Actually I have never had anyone at Whole Foods to ask me to sign a petition, but I do give to the Whole Earth program they support which makes micro loans(of $100 to $300) to women in developing and other countries where they would otherwise have no chance at all. This is a great program that a person can not participate in directly. The women use the money to buy sewing machines or a goat etc. and use the profits from their enterprises toward the benefit of their families. I understand it is a very successful program. This is a very positive thing.

Bonnie

Helllooo Marek!

Bienvenue dear MDP, where have you been? I didn't see you between meetings and overwhelmimg IB noise (some of which I made :( :) ).

love, Heath

Hello Bonnie,
Thank you for giving. There are many small loans now which are doing wonderful work. The Nobel Peace last year to Muhammad Yunus for hie work with the Grameen Bank brought this work more into the world's awareness.
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2006/index.html
And the wiki website www.wiserearth.org lists many others. I have no affiliation with the site or any affiliation, but I'm systematically checking for my charities, then writing to ask any missing out on it to register on this great tool. Please check it out.

Hi Lizzie

I was trying to think of Muhammad Yunus's name when I was writing #37 and who started the micro loans. Programs like these are so much more positive, to me, than some of the old ways. Thanks for the web sites.

Bonnie

I was wondering today if people on bigger planets that are further from their sun than our plant is to ours have longer years and days and then also minutes. Do they have more time? Their minutes must be longer so they have time to relax. But they probably just get used to it and take it for granted. They feel rushed when leaving their Whole Foods, even though by our time it takes them 20 minutes to walk by the college kid looking for a signature. And what about smaller planets closer to their sun. They must be whizzing around like ants on an anthill. Imagine living on Mercury! Never mind the heat, but the days would seem to be flying by! You'd just get to work then it would be time for lunch and then time to go home then you'd get fired for being a lazy earthling.
When we get to interplanetary travel, which probably won't be during the current carnation of species, but after the next one, after the giant rats, the new earth species will dig up all those Chinese imports that people brought at the wal-mart and sent directly to the landfill to fuel their speedy space ships, anyway....when we get to interplanetary travel just imagine the jet lag after spending three weeks on a planet who's days were weeks or minutes!
