Anita Roddick

It is with tremendous shock and sadness that I read, just now, about the death of Anita Roddick. Although I never met her, I was a great admirer of hers and she knew my father well. She set the precedent for socially responsible and environmentally sound businesses - and her work with the Body Shop provided one of the first case studies we did in Business School. When Anita agreed to share some of her blogs on Intentblog, I was giddy.

To have someone so well respected join us was validation that, perhaps, we were doing something interesting. She sent one blog on the imprisonment of her friends from the Angola Three. When she emailed it me, she thanked me profusely for putting it on our site - I was so surprised, touched, honored. Then she asked if she could share her musings on contracting Hep C through infected blood transfusions 35 years ago. I wrote back, "of course," but did not hear back.

Anita Roddick was a voice of change, a voice of passion, a true inspiration. Our world has lost a visionary, a true hero.

On behalf of our family here at Intentblog, I wish her spirit the freedom to soar the infinity of the universe with unabashed passion, leaving behind a world that was blessed and transformed by her presence.

Dear Mallika,

How can we lose anything when the world is a much more beautiful, much richer place because of this passionate, bright light. Thank you Anita Roddick, thank you for having lived so brightly and for continuing to shine through all the hearts and minds you have touched.
All my love to her family, friends and all those who loved and admired her, may you find solace in her great love.

Dear Mallika

On 15th September last year, your dad and my family were together in Oxford, England, and so was the lovely Anita Roddick.

She sat next to us over dinner and we had a long chat about her aspirations and concerns for the world in which we live.

Anita has been a long standing member of ATCA for several years. She was extremely charismatic and loving. The next day, at the Resurgence conference, we sat together again and she was so passionate about countering climate chaos and environmental degradation. She was also passionate about her grand children, with whom she had concluded a holiday in Canada.

Both Surinda and I were truly inspired to see her and it actually became our last time. Dr Deepak Chopra was present at that last meeting.

How synchronised is that?

With love to you and family

DK and family

I have always deeply regretted that we were ineffective to oppose the now defunct deregulation of the blood products industry. Anita's contribution here served in one way to remind, however, that the previous regime we sought to preserve back then was seriously flawed in itself, and that regulation per se is no easy panacea. Her willingness to rise above her personal situation and be involved elsewhere was also inspiring. My condolences to all those who have felt her passing, and especially to those close to her.

Dear Mallika:

Anita Roddick was one on my most admired people. The world is a better and more beautiful place for her presence here.

Blessings and peace to her family and all those close to her.

Love
bonnie

Dear Friends,

Anita was a great friend and it's with a heavy heart and lot of grief that I share her loss with you. Besides being a wonderful human being with a loving heart, she was a passionate environmentalist and human rights activist. Although we will miss her, she will always remain in our hearts.

Love,
Deepak

she was only 64! sad...but life is only a blip in time...no? so, u betta be nice and share ur wealth...cause it's no good to u when u are dead!

Hello Mallika,
My heart sank yesterday when I learned of Anita's passing. I spent some time with Anita a few years back in Santa Fe. What struck me was her fierce spirit. She was a blazing fire for the causes she supported. Even when she made business decisions that appeared contrary to conventional wisdom, one can't help but wonder what the higher purpose was in the scheme of things.

Anita's spirited personality and work is a good example of walking on the edge and blazing a trail of the road less traveled. She was before her time and will be greatly missed. Glad you took the time to mention her.

Fondly, Judy

Hi Mallika,
I have just joined this site. I share your sentiments about Anita entirely. I would very much like to share with you a blog I wrote on another site at the time of Anita's departure:

Dear Friends

I decided to write to today because of the sad news of the death of Dame Anita Roddick, the founder of The Body Shop, and to tell you my personal story of how Anita has always inspired the work I am doing with our organisation PHI

PHI first came into being when a small group of five well-meaning friends gathering in a front room in a country town in the UK. We were newly-qualified health practitioners. We shared a vision... a vision that the therapies we offered, which we knew could help people, would become accepted as mainstream and available to everyone. A vision that people from all backgrounds would be helped to help themselves, in whatever way possible.

None of us had a business background. None of us knew about funding. We didn't know who to approach for help and advice.

There are very few role models for women pioneers.

Anita's Body Shop started with a group of friends meeting in a small town in the South East of England. They shared a vision. A vision which acknowledged that people want to look after their health and beauty without exploiting other living beings.

They knew nothing about business plans. They didn't know the way forwards. They didn't know who to ask for funding. They didn't know anything about franchises.

They didn't need to. People soon came to them. Their passion drew people to them. Soon there were other small groups setting up around her area and further afield.

Eventually, Anita's husband returned from abroad and helped develop a business structure. By then, the Body Shop was already unstoppable.

As a woman, Anita's story has always been a huge inspiration and motivational force behind PHI. I have wanted, for a long time, to tell Anita about PHI. But the time wasn't right.

Over the last couple of months, I have suddenly been feeling an overwhelming urge to finally make contact. To this end, we had been approaching various people who might know her. We wanted to invite her to become a Patron of PHI and knew that she would be completely in tune with what we are doing.

Yesterday, we made an appointment to meet with a friend who knew Anita personally. We were travelling back, having at last made this connection, when we switched on the radio and heard the news.

Anita was involved in many many causes. She was passionate about empowering people who were not in a position to help themselves, such as the homeless.

Her death has inspired me even more to develop PHI to become an organisation that people turn to who need support in their lives.

Thank you for reading this

Best wishes

Christine Crowstaff
