Frontal Lobe Fun

Saira Mohan - November 28, 2007

The top two scales are in perfect balance. How many diamonds will be needed to balance the bottom set?

4 :-)

rajk,

: )

Saira, it's hilarious how simple it is, though it has the potential to mess with your mind.

Because I'm a nerd, here's the algebra:

d = diamond
s = spade
c = club

d + 3s = 2c
3d + 2s = 3c
------------
4d + 5s = 5c

and the last equation is:
5s + xd = 5c, solve for x

...it's already obvious from the sum of the 1st 2 equations... so the answer is 4 diamonds.

There can be no more diamonds than already in the picture, I believe!

Slager,

I don't even know what is meant by fronal lobe consciousness. Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal to approach what looks like math problem with algebra. But to your point, trying to determine the meaning of life, the universe, and everything using math/logic is pretty laughable. Douglas Adams wrote a novel about a computer which was posed the Ultimate Question. After working on the problem for 7.5 million years the computer came back with the answer... 42. Hilarious.

so what sthe final answer. Mathematically it looks like 4, but is there a catch.

Saira,
Do you really derive fun from this?
You seem to be a complicated, complex
configuration of opposites.

Slager,
The puzzle works your executive functions in your frontal lobes by using your pattern recognition, hypothesis testing, and logic.

Slager,
Ain't no brain surgeon... but am I incorrect? If so, just say so and say why.

It is true. Slager, surgical data? there is no data to prove half the medical things, but we know for sure how it works, but dont know why. Saira is right.

waylay,
Couldn't this be said as well..."Saira Mohan's brief interpretation was flippant and close enough"?

no worries waylay,
I have been up all night writing an AIDS speech. Swimming in facts and statistics that make all of this seem somewhat unimportant.

Slager and Hindu sages seem to have it right.
