CAMPAIGN '96/U.S. HOUSE/Newsletter excerpts offer ammunition to Paul's opponent/GOP hopeful quoted on race, crime

Texas congressional candidate Ron Paul's 1992 political newsletter highlighted portrayals of blacks as inclined toward crime and lacking sense about top political issues.

Under the headline of ""Terrorist Update," for instance, Paul reported on gang crime in Los Angeles and commented, ""If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."

Paul, a Republican obstetrician from Surfside, said Wednesday he opposes racism and that his written commentaries about blacks came in the context of ""current events and statistical reports of the time."

Selected writings by Paul were distributed Wednesday by the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Austin lawyer Charles ""Lefty" Morris.

Morris said many of Paul's views are ""out there on the fringe" and that his commentaries will be judged by voters in the November general elections.

Paul said allegations about his writings amounted to name-calling by the Democrats and that his opponents should focus instead on how to shrink government spending and reform welfare.

Morris and Paul are seeking the 14th Congressional District seat held by Greg Laughlin of West Columbia. Laughlin lost the Republican primary to
Paul, a former congressman and the Libertarian Party's 1988 presidential candidate.

Paul, writing in his independent political newsletter in 1992, reported about unspecified surveys of blacks.

""Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5 percent of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual
liberty and the end of welfare and affirmative action," Paul wrote.

Paul continued that politically sensible blacks are outnumbered ""as decent people." Citing reports that 85 percent of all black men in the District of Columbia are arrested, Paul wrote:

""Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the `criminal justice system,' I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal," Paul said.

Paul also wrote that although ""we are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, it is hardly irrational. Black men commit murders,
rapes, robberies, muggings and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers."

A campaign spokesman for Paul said statements about the fear of black males mirror pronouncements by black leaders such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has decried the spread of urban crime.

Paul continues to write the newsletter for an undisclosed number of subscribers, the spokesman said.

Writing in the same 1992 edition, Paul expressed the popular idea that government should lower the age at which accused juvenile criminals can be prosecuted as adults.

He added, ""We don't think a child of 13 should be held responsible as a man of 23. That's true for most people, but black males age 13 who have been raised on the streets and who have joined criminal gangs are as big, strong, tough, scary and culpable as any adult and should be treated as such."

Paul also asserted that ""complex embezzling" is conducted exclusively by non-blacks.

""What else do we need to know about the political establishment than that it refuses to discuss the crimes that terrify Americans on grounds that doing so is racist? Why isn't that true of complex embezzling, which is 100 percent white and Asian?" he wrote.

In later newsletters, Paul aimed criticism at the Israeli government's U.S. lobbying efforts and reported allegations that President Clinton used
cocaine and fathered illegitimate children.

Stating that lobbying groups who seek special favors and handouts are evil, Paul wrote, ""By far the most powerful lobby in Washington of the bad sort is the Israeli government" and that the goal of the Zionist movement is to stifle criticism.

Relaying a rumor that Clinton was a longtime cocaine user, Paul wrote in 1994 that the speculation ""would explain certain mysteries" about the president's scratchy voice and insomnia.

""None of this is conclusive, of course, but it sure is interesting," he said.

Goodwednesday Morning Everyone,

Folks, I am going to take some time away from political discussions. I will still post when I see something I believe is important. I've been getting very upset lately with what is happening in our Nation and it's effects on the world in general, and i believe we are in worse danger than we have ever been during the past 230 years.

We are fast loosing our freedoms, it is clear that we are moving quickly towards becoming a police state. Even though we were once the one and only place on Earth that men could truly be free, we are on the edge now of a nation of serfs and prisoners...nothing else.

I read it every day. I see our Congress...both Houses, doing nothing to stop this and much to help it move forward. I do not believe it is one party or the other. I believe it is both. Congress has been bought off, has turned into whores for the Powers that Be, and Americans want to deny their danger by minimizing it.

Often, I have reacted to the messages from many that minimize our danger. I have treated people rudely, or with weird humor to which I really have no regret although I will apologize to anyone who has been hurt or upset by proxy. Sincerely. I just can not sit and read people saying it is not the fault of this or that person, that it is not that bad, that there is nothing to be done, that due to their reading from and posting to intentblog they are doing what they can. I have expressed my opinion to these excuses in many ways from politely, to sarcasm to outright rudely, and all that happens is people becoming upset.

People, we are like sleepwalkers heading to a cliff. We blame Bush and all his people. I believe that this treason is not isolated to Bush but to all that will continue his work... and that the responsibility is ours. We forgot who we are; we forgot how precious our form of Government is, and we no longer care enough that people in this world are in fear and rage because of what is being done in our name. Once, this slaughter that is being committed with our tax money and through our military would have caused Americans to rise up and close our Government down. Today all we do is talk and learn to tolerate more.

I for one am preparing for the inevitable collapse. If you trust our Congress to save us, God bless you, but I have no such illusions. I believe we are far past the point of no return.

It profits no one for me to rant and rave in response to the defense and excuses I read here for the wrongs of our Nation. It only causes more argument. Because of this, I am withdrawing from discussions. I asked myself today, "What am I gaining my using my time this way?" I had no answer. I believe that no one else is profiting from it either.

I hope you all will do more than type on a computer if you truly care about the high speed collision we are fast approaching. I need to put my efforts elsewhere.

Years ago I worked at a peace and justice organization and got tired of angry people working for peace. I found a new job.

I was at a peace march recently. At the rally afterward some anti-marchers gathered at the 911 statue to mock us. I watched one woman in the peace march yelling with hatred at one of them. And this a peace march? People need non-violent training if real peace is going to be represented.

I don't waste my time with negative news coming in or going out. I don't like its taste, smell, sound, sight, feel. I don't support the way it keeps us locked in old patterns of separation that causes war and injustice.

Peace is inside out. Reminds me of a flower.

Real-life examples of 'Prisoner's Dilemma'

These particular examples, involving prisoners and bag switching and so forth, may seem contrived, but there are in fact many examples in human interaction as well as interactions in nature that have the same payoff matrix. The prisoner's dilemma is therefore of interest to the social sciences such as economics, politics and sociology, as well as to the biological sciences such as ethology and evolutionary biology. Many natural processes have been abstracted into models in which living beings are engaged in endless games of Prisoner's Dilemma (PD). This wide applicability of the PD gives the game its substantial importance.

In political science, for instance, the PD scenario is often used to illustrate the problem of two states engaged in an arms race. Both will reason that they have two options, either to increase military expenditure or to make an agreement to reduce weapons. Neither state can be certain that the other one will keep to such an agreement; therefore, they both incline towards military expansion. The paradox is that both states are acting rationally, but producing an apparently irrational result. This could be considered a corollary to deterrence theory.

In sociology or criminology, the PD may be applied to an actual dilemma facing two inmates. The game theorist Marek Kaminski, a former political prisoner, analysed the factors contributing to payoffs in the game set up by a prosecutor for arrested defendants (cf. References). He concluded that while the PD is the ideal game of a prosecutor, numerous factors may strongly affect the payoffs and potentially change the properties of the game.

In program management and technology development, the PD applies to the relationship between the customer and the developer. Capt Dan Ward, an officer in the US Air Force, examined The Program Manager's Dilemma in an article published in Defense AT&L, a defense technology journal.[8]

Another example concerns a well-known concept in cycling races, for instance in the Tour de France. Consider two cyclists halfway in a race, with the peloton (larger group) at great distance behind them. The two cyclists often work together (mutual cooperation) by sharing the tough load of the front position, where there is no shelter from the wind. If neither of the cyclists makes an effort to stay ahead, the peloton will soon catch up (mutual defection). An often-seen scenario is one cyclist doing the hard work alone (cooperating), keeping the two ahead of the peloton. In the end, this will likely lead to a victory for the second cyclist (defecting) who has an easy ride in the first cyclist's slipstream.

Also in athletics, there is a widespread practice in high school wrestling where the participants intentionally lose unnaturally large amounts of weight so as to compete against lighter opponents. In doing so, the participants are clearly not at their top level of physical and athletic fitness and yet often end up competing against the same opponents anyway, who have also followed this practice (mutual defection). The result is a reduction in the level of competition. Yet if a participant maintains their natural weight (cooperating), they will most likely compete against a stronger opponent who has lost considerable weight.

Advertising is sometimes cited as a real life example of the prisoner’s dilemma. When cigarette advertising was legal in the United States, competing cigarette manufacturers had to decide how much money to spend on advertising. The effectiveness of Firm A’s advertising was partially determined by the advertising conducted by Firm B. Likewise, the profit derived from advertising for Firm B is affected by the advertising conducted by Firm A. If both Firm A and Firm B chose to advertise during a given period the advertising cancels out, receipts remain constant, and expenses increase due to the cost of advertising. Both firms would benefit from a reduction in advertising. However, should Firm B choose not to advertise, Firm A could benefit greatly by advertising. Nevertheless, the optimal amount of advertising by one firm depends on how much advertising the other undertakes. As the best strategy is dependent of what the other firm chooses there is no dominant strategy and this is not a prisoner's dilemma. The outcome is though similar in that both firms would be better off were they to advertise less than in the equilibrium. Sometimes cooperative behaviours do emerge in business situations. For instance, cigarette manufacturers endorsed the creation of laws banning cigarette advertising, understanding that this would reduce costs and increase profits across the industry.[7] This analysis is likely to be pertinent in many other business situations involving advertising.

Large software projects under the GPL (such as Linux) can force cooperation in an otherwise standard PD situation. Given a piece of Free Software, you can study the (modifiable) source code and make improvements. Then you can keep secret the improved version, i.e. keep the modified source code to yourself and distribute it in an unmodifiable binary form (defect). Alternatively, you could share the improved version in a modifiable source code form (cooperate). If everyone defects, then many are probably making exactly the same improvements. For any software that is under the GPL, it is illegal to distribute only the unmodifiable form, including any changes made, thus forcing cooperation. Hence, rival parties can all work on it and know that none will defect, and all share in the improvements made by the others.

William Poundstone, in a book about the Prisoner's Dilemma (see References below), describes a situation in New Zealand where newspaper boxes are left unlocked. It is possible for someone to take a paper without paying (defecting) but very few do (and those who do take only one), apparently recognising the resultant harm if everybody often stole newspapers (mutual defection). The key insight is that taking two newspapers does not generate significantly more utility than taking only one, which explains why newspaper vending machines are relatively simpler (and less secure) than food/drink vending machines (or indeed cash machines!).

Since the pure PD is simultaneous for all players (with no way for any player's action to have an effect on another's strategy) this widespread line of reasoning is called "magical thinking".[9]

The theoretical conclusion of PD is one reason why, in many countries, plea bargaining is forbidden. Often, precisely the PD scenario applies: it is in the interest of both suspects to confess and testify against the other prisoner/suspect, even if each is innocent of the alleged crime. Arguably, the worst case is when only one party is guilty — here, the innocent one is unlikely to confess, while the guilty one is likely to confess and testify against the innocent.

Many real-life dilemmas involve multiple players. Although metaphorical, Hardin's tragedy of the commons may be viewed as an example of a multi-player generalization of the PD: Each villager makes a choice for personal gain or restraint. The collective reward for unanimous (or even frequent) defection is very low payoffs (representing the destruction of the "commons"). However, such multi-player PDs are not formal as they can always be decomposed into a set of classical two-player games.

Psychology is a relatively infant science in Western Civilization. It started with Sigmund Freud? But because of concepts arising in Carl Jung's study, he had to borrow terms from Eastern psychology to label them - Eastern peoples having far longer time to study mind.
In the 1400's we referred to ouselves as body and soul. And now, after the age of reason or enlightenment, whatever it was, we refer to ourselves as body, mind, and soul.
In keeping with the intent of intent blog, I just wanted to say that our fascination with our mind and things of the mind, as opposed to say geology, is because we are in the chrysalis stage. The caterpillar is the body, the mind is the chrysalis, and the soul the butterfly.
Evolution is always going on. I just feel bad that those experiencing manic depression, schizophrenia,clinical depression, catatonia, and the like, have no guides to help them objectify that reality and wake up from that particular state. Thank god for meds though.
Regarding the previous post: When one is alone in one's ideas, one might start to think one must be crazy. I like reading your sane ideas, although Ruth is right, it can get a little toxic. We have to manage ourselves as to how much we can take, and what we should do about it.

A few months ago I asked these questions several times.
If we can't control this president then how will we control the next?
I also asked,
How do we know that Mr. Bush hasn't passed some secret law that will allow him to stay?

No one responded.

Now I have heard it here a few times by other people.

It sounds completely crazy to think that we may not be able to get rid of Mr. Bush, but look what he has done so far while we sit and chat.

The internet may well be another sedative. I don't think Mr. Bush takes time to read blogs or be concerned with what is being said on them.

Ruth may well be on to something. We may have to put down the keyboard and pick up some signs. Actually do something before we lose our country. In just a few short years we went from a place of respect and strength to one of fear.
And the internet carried us through.

I love the internet for many things, but it is not ready to take on the immediate threat of losing our freedom. While we discuss the issues, people are doing things to take those freedoms away.

There is a balance between visualizing, hoping and praying for peace and physically doing something.

Will our collective consciouness shift before we lose our freedom and our planet?
The race is on.

The idealist in me says peace will prevail, the realist in me says don't take it for granite.

The balance is, hope for peace..........work for peace.

What is happening to our global youth? School shootings are up-climbing on a global scale. What are children trying to tell us, adults? Are they merely reflecting our actions of discrimination, and war, or lack of actions towards peace? Are they showing us, that we adults have created a cruel world; an unjust global society; where differences garner losses? Are they showing us, that drugs, alchohol and pollution, are changing our mind, heart and spirit into; depraved, fearful, angry and frustrated beings; unhappy with current events around the world?

Seven are dead. Seven people, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seven people with lives, family, children of their own. Seven lives of dreams, gone in a cruel instant; at the hands of a teen gone wild... running scared, and taking as many with him as he can..

Is this what we as adults have created for our children? A world so fearful and desperate, so polluted of land, water, air and earth, so polluted with harming substances, so polluted with war, famine and fear... and joblessness, government tyranny; that today global-youth just don't value life anymore?

Are children telling us, that the hypocricy they witness every day; the two-tier laws; where one law is for the common, poor man, and another is for the rich, powerful and famous?

Are children telling us, that the perversions of power they see all around them; causing them to feel and act desperately? Are they running scared; so much so all of their lives in these modern times; that they are merely breaking down, in a global family-system; which broke down, or perhaps really, has never existed yet?

What can we, as the adults; do to turn our kids around? How do we fight addictions, and greed, corruption of power, and tyrrany in government; or how do we fight joblessness, disease from injuries, illness...or the dreaded disease of global poverty, and the ever-aging baby-boomer populations, all about to retire; thousands of doctors, nurses...and teachers?

What can we do.. to begin a peaceful revolution, which will inspire our children, to aspire to value life, land, water and air; to cherish all living beings and animals, every creature we share this planet with?

It begins at home. It carries on at school. It is our apparent failure, as the adults on this earth, whom is ruling the planet... to value our only home, our one earth, our connection as a global family; as one race of beings.

So many children are being raised in chaos. Chaotic environment at home with angry struggling parents, or parents and/or siblings addicted to drugs or alchohol. So many children are being exploited, abused, hurt, starved, beaten... every day. Every single day.

How can we expect those children, to grow up to become compassionate-functioning adults.. when the adults caring for them, are contrary to human expectations?

How do we rid our world now, of addiciton problems, and pollution so bad, children are being borned with lung diseases, lung infections, cancer-rates in children are so high...

How can we expect a calm, peaceful world; when government-tyranny rules the day; and corrupted substance-abuse parents, rule the home with an uncaring fist, and substance-abuse addicted teachers and doctors, care for our body and mind; succumbing us to their perversions and mistakes.

How do we save our global children? People.. I need to know!!

I am only one of thousands of parents whom worked hard to instill the right things and ways into their child...he has indeed beat all the odds stacked against him; surviving a kidney shutting down, draining the other to 70% at age 13, overcoming poverty-anger, and overcoming prejudices at school, because of no Dad in the home, Mom on a disability.. yes, I am so proud of my son. So proud of his strength and courage to rise above the falls. It takes a great deal of love, diligent love and patience to raise a child this way.

People whom can "work" don't realize how lucky, how blessed, or how fortunate they are to be able to do so. I know I didn't know what it would be like; not to be able to "work" until it happened to me. I guess, I just ain't takin' it all to well..?

Working is the only thing that keeps us busy enough, mingling enough; that life does not become stagnant, and stale, deprived of growth.

Imagine, what it is like, to be normal one day; injured the next.. and can't work? Life sure has a way of showing you how unbelievably unvalued, how insignificant we really each are.

I'd give anything to be able to complain about a job. A boss. A co-worker. Hours. Responsibility. Working poor, is still a better life, than non-working poor... at least the working, can hold onto hope; non-working gives you the time to watch life slip through fingers like water.

There are these pigeons making nests on my building sunshades. They leave droppings on the ground level that need daily cleaning. Initially, there were babies which couldn't fly, in the nest. So, I waited before I could remove nests until they were able to fly. I checked today, no babies anymore.but now they are laying eggs. I removed the nests, so that they can find a new home(there are plenty of suitable places around here for their homes). I took the eggs and kept them in a refrigerator. I haven't decided what to do with them.

Any suggestions are welcome... before I decide to make omelets. Wonder how it would taste? I lost my appetite for chicken eggs!

While no campaigns admit to this practice, at a recent Hillary Clinton campaign event in Newton, Iowa, some of the questions posed to the New York Senator were planned in advance, planting some audience members in the crowd.

Clinton: "Well, you should be worried. You know, I find as I travel around Iowa that it's usually young people that ask me about global warming."

The campaign's admission that it planted the question may be another blow to the New York senator's image as a trustworthy politician.

Clinton's critics have accused her of being a double-talker who refuses to answer tough questions specifically. Now her campaign has acknowledged planting at least one question.

Already her rivals have begun to criticize Friday's revelation.

“In light of a weak debate performance, not to mention a persistent inability to answer the tough questions, it appears the Clinton campaign has adopted a new strategy of planting questions,” John Edwards’ Communications Director Chris Kofinis said.

“It’s what the Clinton campaign calls the politics of planting.”

However, chief pilot Robert Hinkle said only one or two of the roughly 40 flights during his six months in the country could be considered humanitarian. All the rest of the flights were mining-related, he told The (Norfolk) Virginia-Pilot.

Charles Taylor, gold, diamonds and racehorse controversy

Robertson repeatedly supported former President of Liberia Charles Taylor in various episodes of his 700 Club program during the United States' involvement in the Liberian Civil War in June and July of 2003. Robertson accuses the U.S. State Department of giving President Bush bad advice in supporting Taylor's ouster as president, and of trying "as hard as they can to destabilize Liberia."

Robertson was criticized for failing to mention in his broadcasts his $8,000,000 (USD) investment in a Liberian gold mine. Taylor had been indicted by the United Nations for war crimes at the time of Robertson's support.

Prosecutors also said that Taylor had harbored members of Al Qaeda responsible for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. According to Robertson, the Liberian gold mine Freedom Gold was intended to help pay for humanitarian and evangelical efforts in Liberia, when in fact the company was allowed to fail leaving many debts both in Liberia and in the international mining service sector. Regarding this controversy, Richard Land, head of the Southern Baptist Convention's public policy said, "I would say that Pat Robertson is way out on his own, in a leaking life raft, on this one."

Robertson has also been accused of using his tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, Operation Blessing, as a front for his own financial gain, and then using his influence in the Republican Party to cover his tracks. After making emotional pleas in 1994 on The 700 Club for cash donations to Operation Blessing to support airlifts of refugees from Rwanda to Zaire, it was later discovered, by a reporter from The Virginian-Pilot, that Operation Blessing's planes were transporting diamond-mining equipment for the Robertson-owned African Development Corporation, a venture Robertson had established in cooperation with Zaire's dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko, whom Robertson had befriended earlier in 1993. According to Operation Blessing documents, Robertson personally owned the planes used for Operation Blessing airlifts.

In 1993, Mobutu was denied a visa by the U.S. State Department after he sought to visit Washington, D.C. Shortly after this, Robertson tried to get the State Department to lift its ban on the African leader.

An investigation by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Office of Consumer Affairs determined that Robertson "willfully induced contributions from the public through the use of misleading statements and other implications" and called for a criminal prosecution against Robertson in 1999. However, Virginia Attorney General Mark Earley, a Republican whose largest campaign contributor two years earlier was Robertson himself, intervened, accepting that Robertson had made deceptive appeals but overruling the recommendation for his prosecution. No charges were ever brought against Robertson. "Two years earlier, while Virginia's investigation was gathering steam, Robertson donated $35,000 to Earley's campaign — Earley's largest contribution."

In April 2002, Robertson acknowledged owning a race horse, named "Mr. Pat." He told a New York Times reporter that his interest in the horse was based purely on its aesthetics. "I don't bet and I don't gamble. I just enjoy watching horses running and performing." Harder to explain was why he spent $520,000 on the horse and intended the beast to compete at the track. But the resulting furor over Robertson's direct participation in a gambling racket eventually caused him to sell the horse a month after the Times story broke."

The father of Reagonomics and former Wall Street Journal editor Paul Craig Roberts has warned that the collapsing dollar will eventually cripple the European economy and may even return the world economy to a barter system as financial chaos ensues.

Roberts served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration and is a former editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Scripps Howard News Service.

Speaking on the Alex Jones Show yesterday, Roberts cautioned that "The loss in value of the dollar is becoming so rapid it's alarming....we've got unmanageable trade deficits, budget deficits, the economy is set for recession, the wars show no end."

Asked how bad the dollar crisis can get, Roberts responded, "It can get awfully bad - the trouble is where can they go?"

"If China removes the peg and all the surplus dollars drive up the value of the Chinese currency then given our dependence on China....it's going to drive the prices up here a tremendous amount and Americans don't have any discretionary income left," said Roberts.

"At some point the foreigners will stop financing our budget and trade deficits - then we're going to have a massive crisis the likes of which we've not experienced....if you're totally dependent on imports of manufactured goods and you can't pay for them, what do you do?" asked Roberts, explaining that the only recourse would be to print more money, pushing the dollar down even further.

Citing the fact that the dollar had lost more than 60 per cent of its value against the Euro since 2001, Roberts said that the flight from the dollar could eventually wreck the European economy because it would cripple their exports.

Asked how low the dollar could go, Roberts said that there was a limit because "There's simply so many dollars, there's not enough room in other currencies to absorb them - at some point the flight of investors from the dollar to the Euro will cause amazing troubles in Europe - they won't be able to export anything because the prices are driven up so high."

Roberts said investors will eventually desert the Euro as a safe haven from the dollar and the same process will cause a crisis in Britain as the pound is devalued due to exports being hit.

"Wages are being frozen, profit margins are shrinking, exports are down - so it's starting to impact on Europe," said Roberts.

Roberts warned that the potential destruction of the dollar as the world's reserve currency could eventually return us to a system of barter, completely altering the landscape of the economic structure as we know it.
