A glimpse into a failing state: SriLanka

Vijay Sappani - November 05, 2007

War clouds are looming over Sri Lanka and the signs are very clear that a full blown war is going to break out. The Tigers have vowed to strike back and this is going to get dirty.

The Sri Lankan government has been making mistakes after mistakes in dealing with the peace process and some of them are clear indication to provoke the Tigers. After the killing of the political chief of the Tigers, that has received global condolences, yesterday the Sri Lankan government refused to allow his mother to attend his funeral. She resides in Markham,Ontario.

First The killing of the chief peace negotiator is a major setback for the already fragile ceasefire in Sri Lanka. Never in history has such an event happened where during a ceasefire one group kills the Chief negotiator of the other group. It makes us wonder, who is the terrorist here now? Next, they have denied his mother a visa to attend his Funeral. Who the *** in a civilized world would do this?

Since both the Tigers and the Sri Lankan government are under the ceasefire terms (at least on paper), the murder of Thamilchelvan is not only a violation of the ceasefire, but a stab in the back for the Norwegian lead peace team. Sri Lankan government knew very well that this will lead to destruction of good will that the peace process has created and increased suffering of the Tamil civilians. In spite of it they have gone ahead to destabilize the peace process.

Yes, he was the political head of a terrorist organization.Whats next, kill the new chief and kill the next one, the next one and on and on. How can you expect to bring peace in Sri Lanka if the government is not sincere and betrays the international community time and again. This is the government that said Allan Rock has taken bribes from Tigers and serves as their agent! This is the same government that said UN and Aid agencies profit from the Tiger activities and hence support them. Every known reputable agency, organization has rapped the Sri Lankan government for its poor record on Human rights and Sri Lanka now is among the most dangerous countries for aid workers and journalists to work. Many Journalists who were critical of the government have been found dead, wonder why.

It is time for the international community to step up and put measures in place that will bring both the Tigers and the Sri Lankan government back to the negotiation table. It is time Canada, US, UK, India, Japan and Norway got together to talk about a resolution in sri Lanka. Canada has the largest Sri Lankan Tamil population out side South Asia, you need the nod from US and UK for pretty much everything today, Japan is the largest donor to Sri Lanka and has some influence with its Buddhist leaders, Norway is currently leading the peace process and should continue to do so and No decision is stable without the support of India.

vijay...if some of the acts are deliberate, how can you call them mistakes?

"vijay...if some of the acts are deliberate, how can you call them mistakes?"

The attack was a deliberate act and it was done with the intention of provoking the Tigers. It is a mistake because they think if the Tigers strike back by bombing public places, then the Sri Lankan government will win sympathy in the international community.

When the Tigers launched air attack, Sri Lanka went running to India to get radars. If the Tigers strike back by hitting Colombo, then they can go to US for bigger fire power.

The Tigers will probably target a military personal or even go for a daring air attack on the sri lankan parliament or defence building. It is any body's guess.

Vijay,

Thanks for the post and keeping us informed about the Tigers and the Sri Lankan government. It was indeed a most abhorrent act they committed.

Perhaps you will do great service to humanity if you volunteer to be a negotiator to resolve the crisis. I am sure Deepak who has much larger international standing for peace will sponsor you for this praiseworthy effort. If you need any support from the Intentblog community, please do not hesitate to express your thoughts and plans in this regard.

By some strange coincidence I was discussing Srilankan politics yesterday with a Srilankan friend. I realised how little the world at large knows about the conflict in SriLanka judging by my own ignorance. It is one of the advantages of visiting this blog. You pick up information here about things that the international media have no interest in. Thanks for introducing some of the intricacies of the Srilankan conflict to an outsider. You seem very optimistic about international community putting pressure on SriLankan government. You think that US or UK might be interested in getting involved? What is in it for them? I am quite impressed as it is that Norway has led the peace process till now. What is the connection?

Deepoo, If I run and get elected some day, then it is one of my top foreign policy priorities. There is a peace process in effect and both the Tigers and Sri lankan government have signed the cease fire, but neither are comlying to it.

US and UK have both banned LTTE and have recently cut aid to the Srilankan government for human rights violations. They are trying to put pressure on both groups. LTTE is the most advanced resistance group in the world. Terrorist groups especially Islamic terrorist have learnt a lot from them. The Tigers were the first to use suicide bombers, they have a navy, air force, swat teams, local police, women's wing like any advanced military. The tigers even have an underground agricultural research centre.

US fears that Tigers expertise could be sold or copied by Alqaida for attacks on US, some of which has already been seen. There is also a strategic interest for them. US has a military base everywhere except in Indian Ocean. They need something strategically to control India and China. Sri Lanka is ideally located for that.

Vijay,

You will make a great statesman and a politician. What are you waiting for to run for some high political office in Canada?

For small office,to be people's servant in the parliament, hopefully in the next election depending on if any of the pensioners decide to step down and do Canada a big favour :)

War is good for nothing but lining the pockets of corrupt politicians and greedy perverted-power-fueled imbiciles!

It shocks me frankly; that with our human unity as one species sharing this planet; that we could make it a floating garden...

but, it seems, it cannot be. It seems, we will destroy this planet too(wink!) and like all the other dead stars in the sky... we will be just another floating dead planet.

then, it will be too late for us all to agree, war is good for nothing... except line the pockets of corrupt politicians, and greedy, power-fueled imbiciles... with little, to no regard whatsoever, of the value of human-unity.

I cannot propose I understand this, or any other war; but, I propose we learn soon.. because there is enough nukes on planet earth NOW< to destroy our only living planet; as well as the entire solar system!!

I like at the dead planets surrounding our solar system, and often wondered as a child, and even now; are those all the other planets we've destroyed through war, and the construction of warring machinary and weapons of mass destruction?

Maybe we all really are, remnant, ancient beings from: mars, venus, jupiter...

North

typo alert!

"I like at the dead planets" = 2nd para from bottom of my post should read:

"I look at the dead planets"

...appologies...

#9-Vijay.. I agree; pensioner-seniors in parliament.. hinder change. They get stuck in old systems, which are outdated for current, modern times and changes. I've always supporte the move, to force retirment in offic!! Most, are so over-medicated for "age problems' it becomes "unfair and unconstitutional" for the right for citizens to have young, energetic, aspiring movers and shakers working "for them!"

NO dis-respect for seniors in my statement!! No, no.. I just believe they get stale in perspective, which hinders positive changes necessary to govern and advise.

What focused collective action can we express to sooth the hot spots around our planet? Is there a mantra we can re-sound as one? Is there a visualization we can extend in support of our global brothers and sisters?

I use white light of protection to surround people in my life, their cars, my car, their house, my house, etc. Why couldn't we visualize our Earth Mother surrounded in white light and in that imaging send peaceful thoughts all around?

In the generation of white light we attract all sorts of positive forces from all sorts of directions. We could even focus on North, South, East and West as the four corners in this time/space as Native Americans have done in their prayerful living.

What other ideas are there? We don't have to be victims of darkness. Let's get pro-active and generate light and love....together! Let's use our global brain!

That will be great Vijay,
to be a member of the Canadian Parliament!
What party you belong to?
Keep us posted of your plans.

I'm really sorry to hear this. The people of Sri lanka have suffered for decades. An end must be brought to the suffering. It can only be attained through a diplomatic process.

The Tigers should show restraint, and redouble their efforts toward a political solution.

Everyone knows the Tigers can be mean and exact revenge. But more slaughter is not going to move them closer to their goal, and they need to get real about that.

To respond with violence is to walk right into the trap that the government is laying for them.

If they show maturity and show that they can be effective negotiators, the world will come to view the government as the bad guys.

You may object, but being a white American, I can tell you that the LTTE's rap is that they are cold-blooded killers, nothing else.

That is not true, of course, but listen, I'm telling you how US citizens see them. And if they engage in more acts of terrorism they won't win any allies around here.

And that is exactly what the Sri Lankan government wants. That way, they get to be the good guys.

The Tigers have to think about this, and seriously consider whether knee-jerk revenge-taking actually moves them closer to their goals. The fact is it won't.

Both sides should spare the lives and destruction of Sri Lanka and get back to the negotiating table.

Otherwise, for both sides, the pain they seek to inflict on the other will boomerang back onto themselves. They're Buddhists, they should understand the karmic effects of their actions.

If the Tigers hit back, it will hurt them. If they dont it will still hurt their cadre morale. so they will hit back. the question is how big and how soon. to plan anythingmajor will take 1-3 months. In the past they have bribed millions of dollars to find out driving directions of senior military and politicians, which is why they have been very successful. Corruption is rampant in Srilanka especially in the defence department. The Sri Lankan government has not shown any willingness to get back to the peace talks.

They will try to hurt the economy. It is very difficult to predict. They just hit an airbase that destroyed nearly 8 aircrafts, helicopters, intelligence drones losing nearly $60 million.

Make a noise for a rising state. I woke up with more ideas to share from #11: if you have rattle, drum, two rocks, even two hands make a noise at your head/North, at your feet/South, to your left and right/center. There are a lot of ideas, even rules, on how to do this ritual/ceremony. Some say one direction is Masculine and the other direction Feminine. I'm not good with outside rules. I listen within and encourage anyone to do the same. Each one has inherent spark and inherent wisdom. Don't be manipulated by outside forces that want something from you. Outside forces that are motivated by fear. These forces are like the Skekses in the movie The Dark Crystal. They drain life blood. Listen to inner guidance...be still and listen.

We are powerful people creating new brain patterns and new expressions. Old patterns fall away because they bounce off having no effect on us. We don't let them in. We have something new to offer upward, downward and all around: Love of His/Her Creation. It feels green to me. Maybe it feels a different color to you. We all ride the wave differently and that's what makes it community. Maybe we're all from different stars here on earth to assist peace and unity.

Trish~~
