Nepal close to recognizing same sex rights

Vijay Sappani - December 21, 2007

Nepal has set the example for other South Asian countries to follow : on armed conflict resolution and human rights

Unbelievable but true. The supreme court of Nepal has ordered that the government scrap rules that discriminate against homosexuals. Nepal is the world's only Hindu monarchy and has strong cultural and religious history attached to that land. That has not stopped Nepal from looking forward to the future, something even the bigger progressive democratic giant India has not done.

I find this Unbelievable, but excited that the small country is going in the right track. Nepal has been plagued by Maoist problems for decades and recently a peace deal was brokered to bring power sharing with the government.

That has definitely helped the economy and locals with an increase in tourism and cut down on defence and collateral costs arising from the constant fighting. The new ruling from the Supreme court might not change everything but put Nepal on the spot light and attract tourists not only for the history that it holds, but also its progressive approach towards human rights and its own people.

It is a fascinating country that I always wanted to visit and is still on my travel list plans. Bhutan and Tibet and two other places that are on my list in that region for its history , culture, beautiful scenaries and of course some divine spirituality for me as a Hindu.
