Respectable Romance!
Just few days back in a family get together we discussed Office Romance at great length.
During the discussion my 24 year old niece stressed on that the wedding ring must be ingrained as a custom for all married men just like the mangalsutra or equivalent adornment (like shakha & Pola among Bengali women) are requisite for married women in India.
My niece works for an international firm and find most of the married men do not wear their wedding bands. This bothers her because it suggests that most of the men want to appear single and unattached. This may inter alia be a reason for adultery, infidelity and present epidemic proportions of divorce rate in the country.
She is a hip girl, member of this space generation but still has certain ethical values and do not agree with all prevalent pop culture. She strongly feels that it will make easy for a girl not to fall prey to the ogles and adept ways of a married man and be lured into a unethical relationship on time.
Though, I personally do not believe that adultery is pop culture(popular though it may be), and not that all ring less married men are out to commit it. Still I understand her anxiety and apprehension. How useful it would be to label people by their eligibility for respectable romance! Sure wedding ring is a symbol, not an announcement to prospective consumers of what to expect. Moreover these rings are easily removable, so they do not offer much protection against unscrupulous advances either but still it is an issue to be pondered. Any thoughts!

It struck me a bit odd , in view of the nature of this post, that the first google ad that popped up advertised Lesbian Rings and the next one said
Married and Lonely?---Find partners on line.
Tell me again, who's supposed to wear the rings?
Walking through all 365 paths
Seeking pieces of me
Following front-footprints
Impossible to catch someone here
Here on water-path
Changing to snow
Cold and white-precious
Where warm-home contrast so well
Natural-mix; orange-fire and movements of snow
The air is not full yet
So, please catch me
Catch me with the smell of a cookie
Stop my jokes with a soft hand and a smile
Enter my repressed inner-zone
Where Santa knows so well kids dreams
Noise-fire
Silent-angel
Noise-fire
Just breathing
Breathing in harmony...

Interesting post! But I have a question. Is the wearing of wedding rings mandatory for women?
Or just for men?
Tammy #1: Yes, and it's even sweeter when a man wants to wear his wedding ring.
Bonnie #2: That's hilarious! What "line" is that where one can find a partner?
I don't even want to recall those days when I was dishonest and deceitful with my spouse. The good news is people can change...I know because I did.
Trish~~
yellowrose, I think it's not mandatory, but those seeking respectable office relationships are expected to wear rings if they are married. The option of affairs will still be open to them, but at least the unmarried women will not be mislead.
