Keith, I hope you awake to a warm day,
sun shining through the window, hot coffee brewing, and a few surprises,
cards and smiles.

Celebrate your day with
the ones who love you at IB,
darlin,
I do :)))

enjoy!

~ Kate

Well, I can have a field day analyzing Florida Exit Polls, the primaries significance and the candidates. But, I won't.

Let's just be reminded this is not a political blog. This is intentblog -- a Spiritual blog. This I have realized.

I suggest we discuss any and all topics including politics BUT with a larger perspective one that of holistic and spiritual, like the political blogs of Deepak Chopra represent.

You know, like we can discuss about Bush who said after SOTU that Faith has helped him overcome Alcoholism when he was 40. About Obama's Church. Hillary's faith ... About the collective consciousness of America, about rising above US Vs. Them , etc...

Lets' be positive, respectful and not be judgmental about anything and anyone.

Let's share our experiences, insights and love apart from interesting news and views, prose and poetry that can intrigue, excite and inspire us.

Let's keep this thread squabble-free... 'Obama vs. Hillary' to begin with.

YES WE CAN!

I lend my full support in this direction.

Thank you.

Happy 50 Keith!

Happiness is being young or old, but middle age is misery
January 29 2008

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/jan/29/health.medicalresearch

"People are most likely to become depressed in middle age, according to a worldwide study of happiness. The team of economists leading the work found that we are happiest towards the beginning and end of our lives, leaving us most miserable in middle years between 40 and 50.

The results, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, showed that people's levels of happiness followed a U-shaped curve, a pattern that was remarkably consistent in the vast majority of countries the researchers looked at, from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe.

For both men and women in the UK, the probability of depression peaked at around the age of 44. In the US, men were most likely to be unhappiest at 50, while for women the age was 40. "

...

Yo Keith!!

Are you sleeping?
Can you hear us?
Do you know if we are by your side?
Does it matter, if you hear us?
When the morning comes We'll be there by your side.

And you will be 50!!!!
Welcome to the club, and Happy Birthday!!!!

Bonnie

All the best, Keith!

Hee hee, you can't catch me.

Whoahhhh!

Dear Kieth,

The Hairy Idiot

xx

And on that day he thought that would never come
It struck him all at once

Yes UT is visited by Abraham
to bring him into balance

Welcome to the club my friend
And we will all confess

This stage in life is heaven-sent
You can only become more, not less

The older the wiser they once said
But let me tell you this

The years that are now straight ahead
Can only be filled with bliss

Cause the wiser one gets
The lesser one regrets

Life starts at fifty
But that is only a (flowing) start
At sixty it becomes a real art
At seventy wisdom is a deal
At eighty I will tell you how I feel
When I have reached that stage
At ninety you probably think that you will never age
And at a hundred back to One again
By that time rejoicing totally in Zen

Dear Keith, Happy 50th Birthday!

Sarah

Princess ~Katie,

You are such a doll! Thank you so very much. Wow!

As we say, I believe you have plastered one on me this time.

I am impressed, and forever I will(or could be) at your service, my dear.

Outside it is 4 degrees, but you, Catherine, you have warmed my heart this morn'!

Of course, I took the day off...just in case I needed to be home free

for all--err...and for awhile. And it looks like I do, I do!

Sweetheart, I still have a surprise or two in store?

Grace me! Keith~

Thanks, Irvine!

As for myself, I went through a lot of crap the last ten years.

It all has to do with seasoning, perhaps. No pain, no gain, eh?

I've read my fair share on the subject of the maturation process.

Obviously, it has had little effect on me as of yet!

Cheers! UT

Hey! Yo-dah-lady-who, Bonnie!

Thank you for the wishes and the welcome!

I am awake and well-aware of the fullness of space beside me2.

No bodies do it bedder dan dem dam iB'ers!

Fellow AARP member, Keith

HaPpY ~50~ BiRtHdAy Keith!!

I hope you have a great time at your birthday party on Saturday!! Your brothers are awesome to do that for you... have a blast, kiss ALL the girls, and dance, like nobody is watching!!

Have a great one... oh, half one-hundred years young man... (((smiles)))because if we were Hobbits; we'd be Baggin's!! lol

Love to you,
North

Mieke.. nice Birthday poem for Keith!! Amazing, how you can write a poem so easily..

Kate, thanks for posting the notice, I as going to do it today too... lol

NOT going to let Keith age silently at all, at all.. uh uh...we welcome you Keith, to the 50-up club! : )

Love,
North

Thank you very much, Mi'Lady Donna!

The party was last Saturday night, North.

A survivor I am, too, and here to tell the tale.

Well...lies, fibs and antidon'ts at least.

I will not go quietly. Sincerely...

Edmund...I hear you're not worth catching. damn!

To the Village Idiot:

Hairy and extraordinary monster man of the scallywags:)

whatever that means...balk-balk-balk-balk-balk!!!!

Thanks for the wish that cries fowl for a fool!

The Fall Chicken

Wow it dropped from 43 degrees F to 7 degrees F overnight the rapid turbulent mass air movement was something to behold with it's high energy micro vortices.

One big tree down fence squashed.

Extreme weather is disturbing. Wet warm to frigid cold in a few hours.

Happy Birthday Keith.

The weather is like that here too, Richard! Right now, it's like spring; the thick slushy icy roads are unsafe to walk, and unbelievably deep! Very damp-cold... very extreme changes; as just last week, we had a deep-freeze a few weeks...

Kieth.. lol see? memory is the first to go at 50!! I thought it was THIS Saturday!! lol ; )

Love,
North

If I were to follow that up, Sarah...Sarah? Que' Sarah? Who's Sarah?

Dear Mieke, Comma Lady of the Never-Never-Netherlands:

.

Before Abraham was ham, I ham.

I ham harmony and I ham no longer green ham.

The balance remains, but only in my three squares.

I will never, ever forget my forgivable regrets.

Thank you, O Wise One, for your friendship,

I truly appreciate the dedication!

Thank you, Richard!

So far so good.

Monday it was 60 degrees.

Tuesday morning here, we had a wind chill of minus 17! Yuck!!!

Todays forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and a high of 22.

That still sucks, but it's much more seasonable.

I'm buying my second crown today. Problem is...it's from the dentist. Yikes!!!

I had to take some time-off to do it, so it may as well be today.

I shall not be disturbed, either, with ether.

Cheers to beers!

Wow! It's a party.

Happy Happy Joy Joy Keith.
50 is the best year to be.

derek

Ren & Stimpy rocked!

Yo! & Cheers to good years!

And thanks, derek, my good man!

Cock & Doodle all the way, tonight!

Starting about 3:30, when a friend stops

by and we proceed to procure a few free birth

day beers during the happiest hours of my short life!

"It's my party and I'll cry if I want to!" Or not. I am in control.

Troops deployed in China to help ease travel chaos caused by snow.

The military repurposed.

Hopefully with enough extreme weather the world's military will be to busy to fight a war.

goodmorning all,

Keith, let me start out by wishing you a HAPPY 1/2 Century Old!! haha, really, have a jolly good day, eat lots of cake and other good stuff today, wishing you many healthy and happy birthdays to come....ruth

yes, Hillary had a big win in Florida and I must say lot of NewYorkers are happy about that. I was having coffee with a group of people yesterday and many were Democrats and they were glum about what is happening with their Party and what they see as fellow Democrats playing into the hands of the "repubs" by turning their back on Hillary in favor of Obama and pretty much handing the "repubs" their dream race come true...a Presidential race without "THAT" Woman Hillary Clinton. They do not believe that Barak Obama will or even can carry the Democratics to the White House. They, obviously, are not Barak Supporters. But, imagine my surprise, other Democrats NOT supporting Barak Obama, I was feeling very lonely, there, for awhile. So, it looks like it is on to super Tuesay and I get to vote in the primary! I'll be there, for sure.

I heard that JOhn Edwards is out of the race..haven't really read anything about it yet, I do not see him supporting Hillary, though, he seems like an Obama man.

well, it is windy and cold as heck up here in NY..just got in, was out in the very early am driving in pouring rain that turned to ice and wind, wind, wind, it feels good to be in for awhile with a nice hot cup of coffee before I have to venture out again...brrrrrr.

have a great day all, North, stay warm! ruth

Keith: A very happy 50th to you, bro! May your next fifty be assured, bodacious, confident, dashing. . . wise, Xenocratic, yappier, and zealful!

And though I won't catch you, you have much that's worth catching ;-) !

Dear Intentblog family,

In Southern California, a mother of 3 young boys has just been diagnosed with "cervical adenocarcinoma that has metastasized to the ovaries; considered Stage 4 cancer". She deeply feels that her time is not up yet - one of her boys has autism, and over the last year or so, she has dedicated her energies to his recovery using a marvelous therapeutic modality (which is how I know her). And being no stranger to miracles, she is open to alternative modes of healing her cancer (in addition to mainstream methods).

Could we all send out our best intentions and energies for Tanya's healing and well-being? And let's ask the universe to create a wonderful story of recovery and triumph. I (and Tanya, I'm sure) would appreciate any and all other help and guidance you can provide – wonder-drugs, thought forms and anything in between.

Peace, love, joy and blessings to all.

worst winter storms for half a century in China.

The holistic approach to dealing with the increased energy entering our environment is to harness it.

This means we take all the extra environmental energy and convert it into mechanical energy which we then direct and apply to the work needing to be done. This naturally replaces energy sources based on burning and generating creating CO2. This approach also creates a distributed no single point of failure system as well as reducing costs. It also creates adaptability and mobility.

Last nights wind could have provided the energy needs for our entire country for several weeks if we had proper distributed energy storage, as I proposed before we need batteries at every house to accommodate the fluctuations in environmentally produced energy.

Smart Energy Systems.

There is no scarcity of energy we have more than we can handle. There is a scarcity of applied intelligence and ingenuity

and as Bonnie says..

Working based on shared interest rather than self interest. Or Self Interest with a capital S which is all inclusive.

Thanks, ruth!

I will have a bit of cake and ice cream, for sure.

As for eating a lot of other good stuff...you mean, like...pie?

Or fish?

I'm glad you think so, dear Mr. sWORDSman. Thank you for the compliment!

Did you leave out 'sexy' for some particular reason?

Another 50 without That, which I ham, would be horrendous!

I shall not think about it, and screw Everything up.

The world as, "Will I?" Whatever. Peace, dude!

God bless Tanya and family!

I pray the Lord gives her the strength to carry on.

Golly, since I last posted here, a storm kicked up; it's white-out, outdoors; the wind is atrocious!! Unbelievable.. in just such short time; the thick slush, already freezing.. slickly.

Keith.. a little Birthday Jung for ya!

"Philemon....brought home to me the crucial insight that there are things in the psyche which I do not produce, but which produce themselves and have their own life. Philemon represented a force which was not myself..I observed
clearly that it was he who spoke, not I."

and, and, and.. some Rabindranith Tagore! Ooh yes.. the classics!

Rabindranith Tagore

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake”

I've always percieved this RT piece to mean, awakening our country "within."

Hey in honor of Keiths birthday.

Los Angeles premiered the medical marijuana vending machine on Monday, with three dispensaries already prepared to welcome their fingerprinted, photographed and prescription-toting customers.

The unusual vending machine is the invention of Vincent Mehdizadeh, owner of medical-marijuana dispensary Herbal Nutrition Centre in Los Angeles, who told the Associated Press that it took him more than half a year to design and patent the device, a black, armored box, which he calls the “PVM” – prescription vending machine.

The machines can only be used by people who have prescriptions for the drug in order to alleviate their chronic pain, loss of appetite, nausea and other health problems that marijuana has been shown to make easier to bear when other drugs fail.

Patients are required to present their prescription for approval and undergo a few security measures before they are able to rely on the machine’s 24-hour services, USA Today notes. They are fingerprinted and photographed; they purchase a pre-paid card with a magnetic stripe; they choose the dosage they need (3.5 grams or 7 grams) and one of five strains of marijuana (Platinum Kush, Fire O. G., Bubba Kush, Purple Kush and Wild Cherry, per the Los Angeles Daily news.)

Once the patients begin to use the card, it will be verified each time, as will their fingerprints; if all is well, the marijuana is then dispensed to them in capsule form, within a green vacuum-sealed packages. Patients can buy no more than 1 ounce per week. The dispensaries will be protected by armed security guards around the clock.

"The machines can only be used by people who have prescriptions for the drug in order to alleviate their chronic pain, loss of appetite, nausea and other health problems that marijuana has been shown to make easier to bear when other drugs fail."

The above section, held the most significant information!

We are at a critical time in medical medicines, when people, with chronic, no-cure diseases, will be allowed free-choice to medicine for their ailments, when synthetic drugs fail to achieve the same directive of relief of suffering!

Synthetic drugs are so addictive, so systemic..to the breakdown of the human body's immune system of the mind, body and spirit!

W'as the fuss.. it's a natural herb!
It stinks when used. so what! Cooked food stinks, perfumes stink, cigarettes, cigars and pipes and alchohol stinks... what is the difference exactly? One smells nicer than the other, so it's acceptable legally? lol

To know the government spends billions in Canada and the USA; to keep marijuanna illegal..is preposterous, and a direct violation of human rights, to free-choice of medicine.

Keeping marijuanna illegal; puts the suffering person at high risk of addiction to synthetic drugs; hereby subjecting them to exploitation!

A DOUBLE-HAPPY day.. for the achy achy...club.

Love,
North

Dear Swordsman.

Yes I will do what you suggest in silence, not only for dear Tanya, but for all that are in need, embracing this earth into a loving light energy that will lift up her heart indeed. Am sending out a vibrant swirl of peace to every boy or girl that wanders on her ground, that still holds the promise of a beautiful pearl, yet to be found :)

Mieke

Joining with you as well, Swordsman, and Mieke; for a life, is the life worth honouring and cherishing.. Love, North

Yo sWORDSman
Peace, healing and love to this mother and her sons.

Happy Birthday, Keith!

May life be all you hope for, and more.

North,

Those that keep naturally occurring drugs criminalized are working at the behest of organized crime knowingly or not.

Organized crime profits from black markets so it is really organized crime keeping drugs illegal.

Also the violence resulting from market share and turf battles should be taken into account.

Gang violence and the resulting police and justice system costs are all unnecessary.

Any member of congress supporting criminalization of drugs is supporting organized crime and violence in the nations. The elite still have access to the drugs and can muster the money to defend themselves in court against the unconstitutional laws.

Furthermore drugs were initially made illegal to create two artificial profit centers. Competition from hemp for synthetic fibers derived from oil waste products and competition with high profit patented pharmaceutical drugs. For example cocaine would compete with Ritalin.

#43-Richard.. I know, I know... I've been advocating for the right to free-choice of natural hearb drug, or synthetic drugs for years!! As I mentioned in another thread; the disab-prog tried to boot me, citing I did not use synthetic narcotics for pain and suffering; hence my suffering with serious illness's was not severe enough? I laughed in their face; and told them "the headlines" would make a great make-break story in the news...

Long story short; my disab was not jeapardized; by those willing to capitalize on the helpless..

Richard; it is wonderful; to have intelligent support from one such as you! I wish more professional's would stop the war on marijuanna; and concentrate more, on the war against pharmaceutical industries; becoming a billions of dollars industry "from our" denial of free-choice!

Eploited.. I am. We are. siggggh

And so, because of the corruption; I ache, cry, can't sleep most nights.. suffer the results of all such.... for the ignorance, and greed of men/women.

But, today is Keith's birthday; and to HIM: we celebrate!!

Hi Ruth.. I am staying warm; just made porcupine balls(meatballs with rice) in honey-garlic sauce(comes in the convenient glass jar). Yummy.. early dinner! burp.. nap-time! lol

being 50ish is great; we have a prepared excuse for every thing... lol

Love,
North

Love,
North

geeez error!!

should read:

"#43-Richard.. I know, I know... I've been advocating for the right to free-choice of natural herb drug, over synthetic drugs for years!!"

#43-Richard, and to think kids are being drugged so young with ritalin; is more than disturbing; it's downright abusive; considering it's relation to cocaine addictions! When my teen started high-school; he was disturbed at how easily, some kids sold their ritalin; and also equally was disturbed by how kids who "needed ritalin" were hounded for their "medicine."

Indeed.. the profiteers rule the day, and a no-drugs, no-alchohol person like me; is victimized by a two-tier law-system which supports profiteering!

Love,
North

Ogden Nash:

from: Pretty Halcyon Days

How pleasant to sit on the beach,
On the beach, on the sand, in the sun,
With ocean galore within reach,
And nothing at all to be done!
No letters to answer,
No bills to be burned,
No work to be shirked,
No cash to be earned,
It is pleasant to sit on the beach
With nothing at all to be done!

How pleasant to look at the ocean,
Democratic and damp; indiscriminate;
It fills me with noble emotion
To think I am able to swim in it.
To lave in the wave,
Majestic and chilly,
Tomorrow I crave;
But today it is silly.
It is pleasant to look at the ocean;
Tomorrow, perhaps, I shall swim in it.

How pleasant the salt anesthetic
Of the air and the sand and the sun;
Leave the earth to the strong and athletic,
And the sea to adventure upon.
But the sun and the sand
No contractor can copy;
We lie in the land
Of the lotus and poppy;
We vegetate, calm and aesthetic,
On the beach, on the sand, in the sun.

dear sWORDSman,
I too add my words whispered on the breeze to travel to Tanya as she heals and recovers. May she be surrounded in the glow of love's warm embrace and healing powers.

Mi'Lady North,

Thanks again! But does it apply in my case?

Is it relative to MY issue? Or issues, what have you.

According to a lovely Dictionary I have, it has a perpetual calendar in the back...

January 30, 1957--was a Wednesday!

Anyone else watch the Detroit Mayor "I'm sorry" live speach with spouse by his side. .begging the media to stop hounding his wife and kids?

How profound, he feels he has that power, when Lady Diana didn't, Anna Nicole Smith didn't, Brittany.. doesn't? Did the media leave Brit alone, when she tried to grow up? No! Did the media leave Brit alone, when she tried to have a marriage? No! Did the media leave Brit alone, when she tried to be a Mom? No! Do the media leave her alone now; even knowing full well.. she is on the edge? No!

So, what makes the Mayor of Detroit; whom betrayed his wedding vows and promises to his wife; more special? lol

He cites the building Detroit has built; and I'd like to tell him, about the 100+ million dollar music EMPIRE, Brittany built? sheeeesh!

Any views to add.. or, is everyone in the punch-bowl, or at the dance-floor at Keith's OT birthday party? lol

Love,
North

hey D,
help me with these party favors :)
I think UT is having a fun happy hour, but we do have a nice party going for him here at OT.
cheers to Keith!

Yo Keith,

Breaking story...

This, my friends, is a movie script...

An Ex-President, a Mining Deal and a Big Donor

Is this going to be Hillary's Chappaqua(Kennedy's Waterloo)?

Would be funny to read Borat on Clinton's Kazakhstan Connection.

Also, would like to see what transpires on the subway travelling New Yorkers Thursday morning when they read The Front Page of NY Post endorsing Obama and NY Times breaking the bomb shell.

Oops...

Kenendy's was the "Chappaquiddick"(Near Martha's vineyard) incident.

Clinton's is "Chappaqua"(New Castle, NY)

Whatever. They sound similar.

Perhaps like Tedd, for Hillary too Presidency shall be distant dream...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kennedy

"Tedd Kennedy deflected supporters who urged him to run for President in 1972 and 1976 by citing family concerns, in light of the fact of his brothers' assassinations. He finally threw his hat into the ring for the Democratic nomination in the 1980 presidential election by launching an unusual, insurgent campaign against the sitting president, Jimmy Carter, a member of his own party. Despite much early support, his bid was ultimately unsuccessful. Carter was highly unpopular at the time of Kennedy's announcement, and Kennedy could have expected to do well against the incumbent president. But the Iran hostage crisis gave President Carter a large boost in the polls that lasted for several months. The upswing in Carter's popularity knocked the wind out of Kennedy's candidacy, which was predicated on dislodging an unpopular president. In addition, the Chappaquiddick incident still dogged the senator, and his opponents often invoked the highly recognizable melody of Simon & Garfunkel's 1970 hit song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to remind voters of the tragedy and scandal. "

No surprises there.

8 Indian-American finalists for 'junior Nobel Prize'
31 Jan 2008
Times of India

NEW YORK: Eight Indian-American high school students, five of them girls, have been named among 40 finalists for the Intel Science Talent Search 2008 contest.

The competition, now in its 67th year, has been sponsored by the Intel Corporation for the past 10 years. Winners of the competition have gone on to receive over 100 of the world's most coveted science and math honours, including six Nobel prizes.

Avanthi Raghavan, Shravani Mikkilineni, Hamsa Sridhar, Shivani Sud, Isha Jain, Vinay Venkatesh Ramasesh, Ashok Chandran and Ayon Sen get at least $5,000 in scholarships and a laptop. They will next compete for 10 scholarships - including the top award of $100,000 - in March in Washington, DC.

The eight talented students were selected Wednesday from over 1,600 individual entrants for the nationwide competition, often called the "junior Nobel prize", administered annually by the Washington based Society for Science & the Public.

"A high proportion of Indian-American finalists speaks well for the community, and we welcome their participation," Rick Bates, spokesperson for the organisers, said.

The project Ashok Chandran, 17, of Nesconset, New York, submitted for the competition, studied the link between smoking and breast cancer. He tested the hypothesis that nicotine would alter mammary cell gene expression, creating a cellular environment akin to that of a breast cancer cell.

Isha Himani Jain, 17, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has identified a cellular mechanism underlying bone growth spurts in zebra fish, similar to the way children's bones grow. She had also won, in October, a $100,000 scholarship topping the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology for the same study, which has been published in a journal.

Avanthi Raghavan, 17, of Orlando, Florida, submitted a project studying the mechanisms of protein transport critical to the survival and virulence of the malaria parasite, which accounts for over two million deaths every year.

The project of Shivani Sud, 17, of Durham, North Carolina, focuses on identifying stage II colon cancer patients at high risk of recurrence and the best therapeutic agents for treating their tumours.

Hamsa Sridhar, 18, of Kings Park, New York, developed a low cost optical tweezers system that uses laser light to trap and suspend microscopic particles.

Ayon Sen, 17, of Austin, Texas, investigated the natural processes by which the ocean transports heat. He developed a MATLAB software interface for deep-water ocean current velocity data and integrated it with surface water velocity data from satellite altimeters.

Vinay Venkatesh Ramasesh, 18, of Fort Worth, Texas, submitted a chemistry project involving algorithms to accurately determine molecular thermodynamic properties of large molecules, such as proteins.

Shravani Mikkilineni, 17, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, studied the computation of continued fraction expansions of the square roots of positive integers.

Richard Dawkins, tune in on Friday!
by PZ Myers, Scienceblogs

Category: Kooks

I'm sure he will be looking forward to this: his funeral is going to be held tomorrow.

Since the teaser calls him "one of the most wicked and vile human beings ever to walk the face of this earth", and since they've already done a hack job on Heath Ledger (in which they build a crude dummy of the actor and set it on fire), I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't consist of a reading of Dawkins' suggestion for his funeral. In fact, I don't think these hateful yahoos are capable of reading that; the examples on their website are less than eloquent. These are not your Southern gentlemen with the lilting accents smooth as honey, but rather, a couple of dumb crackers, shrill and nasal, who can barely read their own scripts.

It's coming from a small group of ignorant haters called the King of Terrors Ministry. I find that appropriate and amusing. Some people got seriously bent out of shape that Dawkins dared to call the Christian god "a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully," but here's a group of cultists who revel in that kind of description, who worship a being because he inspires terror. Oh, and like the god of Fred Phelps, their god is intensely obsessed with homosexuality.

Correspondent inference theory
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Correspondent inference theory is a psychological theory proposed by Edward E. Jones and Keith Davis that argues we use the consequences of a person's behaviour as a basis for inferring the person's intentions. For example, if you observe someone striking another person correspondent inference theory suggests that you are likely to assume that the attacker is motivated by a desire to inflict harm (because harm is the perceived consequence of the action). However, the attacker may not have been acting maliciously (e.g., the attacker may have been play-acting). Thus, the theory suggests that intention is inferred from the most easily-observable consequences of a person's actions.

Attributing intention

The problem of accurately defining intentions is a difficult one. For every observed act, there are a multitude of possible motivations. If a person buys someone a drink in the pub, he may be trying to curry favour, his friend may have bought him a drink earlier, or he may be doing a favour for a friend with no cash.

It should be noted that the work done by Jones and Davis only deals with how people make attributions to the person; they do not deal with how people make attributions about situational or external causes.

Jones and Davis make the reasonable assumption that, in order to infer that any effects of an action were intended, the perceiver must believe that (1) the actor knew the consequences of the actions (e.g., the technician who pushed that button at Chernobyl did not intend the reactor to melt down), and (2) the actor had the ability to perform the action (could Lee Harvey Oswald really have shot John Kennedy?).

Non-Common effects

The consequences of a chosen action must be compared with the consequences of possible alternative actions. The fewer effects the possible choices have in common, the more confident one can be in inferring a correspondent disposition. Or, put another way, the more distinctive the consequences of a choice, the more confidently you can infer intention and disposition.

Suppose you are planning to go on a postgraduate course, and you short-list two colleges - University College London and the London School of Economics. You choose UCL rather than the LSE. What can the social perceiver learn from this? First there are a lot of common effects - urban environment, same distance from home, same exam system, similar academic reputation, etc. These common effects do not provide the perceiver with any clues about your motivation. But if the perceiver believes that UCL has better sports facilities, or easier access to the University Library then these non-common or unique effects which can provide a clue to your motivation. But, suppose you had short-listed UCL and University of Essex and you choose UCL. Now the perceiver is faced with a number of non-common effects; size of city; distance from home; academic reputation; exam system. The perceiver would then be much less confident about inferring a particular intention or disposition when there are a lot of non-common effects. The fewer the non-common effects, the more certain the attribution of intent.

Low-Social desirability

People usually intend socially desirable outcomes, hence socially desirable outcomes are not informative about a person's intention or disposition. The most that you can infer is that the person is normal - which is not saying anything very much. But socially undesirable actions are more informative about intentions & dispositions. Suppose you asked a friend for a loan of £1 and it was given (a socially desirable action) - the perceiver couldn't say a great deal about your friend's kindness or helpfulness because most people would have done the same thing. If, on the other hand, the friend refused to lend you the money (a socially undesirable action), the perceiver might well feel that your friend is rather stingy, or even miserly.

In fact, social desirability - although an important influence on behaviour - is really only a special case of the more general principle that behaviour which deviates from the normal, usual, or expected is more informative about a person's disposition than behaviour that conforms to the normal, usual, or expected. So, for example, when people do not conform to group pressure we can be more certain that they truly believe the views they express than people who conform to the group. Similarly, when people in a particular social role (e.g. doctor, teacher, salesperson, etc) behave in ways that are not in keeping with the role demands, we can be more certain about what they are really like than when people behave in role.

Expectancies

Only behaviours that disconfirm expectancies are truly informative about an actor. There are two types of expectancy. Category-based expectancies are those derived from our knowledge about particular types or groups of people. For example, if you were surprised to hear a wealthy businessman extolling the virtues of socialism, your surprise would rest on the expectation that businessmen (a category of people) are not usually socialist.

Target-based expectancies derive from knowledge about a particular person. To know that a person is a supporter of Margaret Thatcher sets up certain expectations and associations about their beliefs and character.

Choice

Another factor in inferring a disposition from an action is whether the behaviour of the actor is constrained by situational forces or whether it occurs from the actor's choice. If you were assigned to argue a position in a classroom debate (e.g. for or against the free-market economy), it would be unwise of your audience to infer that your statements in the debate reflect your true beliefs - because you did not choose to argue that particular side of the issue. If, however, you had chosen to argue one side of the issue, then it would be appropriate for the audience to conclude that your statements reflect your true beliefs.

Although choice ought to have an important effect on whether or not people make correspondent inferences, research shows that people do not take choice sufficiently into account when judging another person's attributes or attitudes. There is a tendency for perceivers to assume that when an actor engages in an activity, such as stating a point of view or attitude, the statements made are indicative of the actor's true beliefs, even when there may be clear situational forces affecting the behaviour. In fact, earlier, psychologists had foreseen that something like this would occur; they thought that the actor-act relation was so strong - like a perceptual Gestalt - that people would tend to over-attribute actions to the actor even when there are powerful external forces on the actor that could account for the behaviour.

Eye-opening commentary from Eckhart Tolle's book, A New Earth.......

HOW THE PAIN-BODY FEEDS ON DRAMA

If there are other people around, preferably your partner or a close family member, the pain-body will attempt to provoke them---push their buttons, as the expression goes---so it can feed on the ensuing drama. pain-bodies love intimate relationships and families because that is where they get most of their food. It is hard to resist another person's pain-body that is determined to draw you into a reaction. Instinctively it knows your weakest, most vulnerable points. If it doesn't succeed the first time, it will try again and again. It is raw emotion looking for more emotion. The other person's pain-body wants to awaken yours so that both pain-bodies can mutually energize each other.

Many relationships go through violent and destructive pain-body episodes at regular intervals. It is almost unbearably painful for a young child to have to witness the emotional violence of their parents' pain-bodies, and yet that is the fate of millions of children all over the world, the nightmare of their daily existence. That is also one of the main ways in which the human pain-body is passed on from generation to generation. After each episode, the partners make p, and there is an interval of relative peace, to the limited extent that the ego allows it.

Excessive consumption of alcohol will often activate the pain-body, particularly in men, but also in some women. When a person becomes drunk, he goes through a complete personality change as the pain-body takes him over. A deeply unconscious person whose pain-body habitually replenishes itself through physical violence often directs it toward his spouse or children. When he becomes sober, he is truly sorry and may say he will never do this again, and he means it. The person who is talking and making promises, however, is not the entity that commits the violence, and so you can be sure that it will happen again and again unless he becomes present, recognizes the pain-body within himself, and thus disidentifies from it. In some cases, counseling can help him do that.

Most pain-bodies want to both inflict and suffer pain, but some are predominately either perpetrators or victims. In either case, the feed on violence, whether emotional or physical. Some couples who may think they have "fallen in love" are actually feeling drawn to each other because their respective pain-bodies complement each other. Sometimes the roles of perpetrator and victim are already clearly prescribed the first time they meet. Some marriages that are thought to be made in heaven are actually made in hell.

If you have ever lived with a cat, you will know that even when the cat seems to be asleep, it still knows what is going on, because at the slightest unusual noise, its ears will move toward it, and its eyes may open slightly. Dormant pain-bodies are the same. On some level, they are still awake, ready to jump into action when an
appropriate trigger presents itself.

In intimate relationships, pain-bodies are often clever enough to lie low until you start living together and preferably have signed a contract committing yourself to be with this person for the rest of your life. You don't just marry your wife or husband, you also marry her or his pain-body---and your spouse marries yours. It can be quite a shock when, perhaps not long after moving in together or after the honeymoon, you find suddenly one day there is a complete personality change in your partner. Her voice becomes harsh or shrill as she accuses you, blames you, or shouts at you, most likely over a relatively trivial matter. Or she becomes totally withdrawn. "What's wrong?" you ask. "Nothing is wrong," she says. But the intensely hostile energy she emanates is saying, "Everything is wrong." When you look into her eyes, there is no light in them anymore; it is as if a heavy veil has descended, and the being you know and love which before was able to shine through her ego, is now totally obscured. A complete strange seems to be looking back at you, and in her eyes there is hatred, hostility, bitterness, or anger. When she speaks to you, it is not your spouse or partner who is speaking but the pain-body speaking through them. Whatever she is saying is the pain-body's version of reality, a reality completely distorted by fear, hostility, anger, and a desire to inflict and receive more pain.

At this point you may wonder whether this is your partner's real face that you had never seen before and whether you made a dreadful mistake in choosing this person. It is, of course, not the real face, just the pain-body, but it would perhaps be wise to choose someone whose pain-body is not excessively dense.

~ A Collective Dysfunction ~

Recognize the ego for what it is: a collective dysfunction, the insanity of the human mind. When you recognize it for what it is, you no longer misperceive it as somebody's identity.

Once you see the ego for what it is, it becomes much easier to remain nonreactive toward it. You don't take it personally anymore. There is no complaining, blaming, accusing, or making wrong. Nobody is wrong. It is the ego in someone, that's all.

Compassion arises when you recognize that all are suffering from the same sickness of the mind, some more acutely than others. You do not fuel the drama anymore that is part of all egoic relationships.

What is its fuel? Reactivity. The ego thrives on it.

On a shining night:
One can look for gold
in the bush of a wintergreen berry
Thoughts are at

wear a trucker's cap
and be sure your aye's dot
its always a trip on the short railroad

let's commiserate
you know less is more

Happy Birthday, mister!

Yo Irvine
There are those who have live in pain going back sometimes generations. Sins of the fathers stuff.
Pain does strange things especially if it is old enough to be subconscious. It took me years of therapy to know I was completely numb to my pain. I could cut myself and not feel it.

Too personal? Yo

Pain was also my teacher. Yo. I've explored places most people do not venture.

Few Very negative Reviews of Tolle (the author)

From Amazon's review of "A New Earth : Awakening to Your Life's Purpose":

.....

Reviewer: Zen-"Koanz"

...

I have known the author for several years--we were actually once friends. If you people only knew just how cut-throat, cold and fiercely ambitious this man really is, you would RUN from his latest work.

Eckhart and I were friends, peers, and actually spent many a time together as just good friends (BEFORE THE FAME)--yes, indeedie--and he has become the most self-serving, self-focused, selfish man you will ever meet. (it's heart-breaking. But it is the solemn truth.)

Do not fall for the false piety-for it rings so hallow once you really know the man. I am unfortunately, one of the--one of the few--who once claimed this man as a friend. Oh, if you only knew the truth about Ulrich (his real name) Tolle!! Conceited and selfish to the core. Anything he says chills--actually freezes-- my bones because he is such a living lie of what he espouses.

How can people be so blind?

Someone out there must know this man, too. Please come forward. And tell your truth about Ulrich.(and not the dewey-eyed, "groupies" who work for him)

The big fake spiritual teacher.

Reviewer: Georgia Tate "Georgee-girl"
(Lansing, MI)

I was able to get my hands on a preview copy (usually reserved for reviewers) from a friend of mine and only recently finished reading this mess.

I have to say, "A New Earth" feels like a strained, "pressured" (publishers ?) effort from this overly-successful author. Tolle is a walking contradiction of all the "non-ego" principles he upholds (there's a smug , know-it-all tone here that I find unpleasant). I ask other readers to please keep this in mind. This author has lost his "place" (way up the sky?) and when you read this follow up to the "Power of Now"--it think you'll agree--there's nothing new here--and the author hardly stands out compared to his peers (Chopra, Williamson, et al).

Publishers love success but the problem is, they think authors can whip up another one--and they're always abysmally wrong. Tolle is boring here and so full of himself (Uncannily ironic as he's saying here how to get out of "ego-centered-ness"!). I have heard it all before--and so have you. On to others. Or maybe re-reading the classics Tolle even recommends(see his reading list)?

Yo Irvine
Who cares about Mr. Tolle.
What about your pain.

Yo doodleman. We sometimes find ourself scarcely alone to fight our war or find our peace in our lives.

I'm glad we are not alone in our journey. Help can come from a an honest teacher and a dishonest teacher, from pain and from joy.
There is no one above reproach.

Mr. Tolle is just a guy doing his thing.

Yo I meant "*scarily* alone".

"What about your pain."

In my experience and observation, pain is the accumulation of all things one hasn't forgiven plus all things that one is unwilling to forgive.

It is the result of the psychological defense mechanism. Psychological 'defense' mechanism works to *preserve* the memories of all bad things that has happened to it, because, it is interested protecting itself from the future occurrence of them. In order to protect it from future attacks, it works to *preserve* a firm image of the offenders, so that it can recognize them early and can work prevent the future harm. If it *forgets*
[forgives], it runs risk of making itself vulnerable to the future attacks.

Pain is thus, created by the psychological defense mechanism building memories of what/who has caused me harm, what/who is a threat, who/what can be a threat or who/what can prevent me from getting what I want. Like a dormant, yet alert cat, this psychic body [memory + intention + energy] keep watching for any sign of 'threat' and reacts on even slightest indication. Once, activated, it either attacks or shrinks, recoils in fear and pain, and, sometimes, it does both.

I have read that our physical defense system [immune system] too works in a similar way. It preserves the remains of foreign attacking bacteria, viruses so that it can 'recognize' them early and thus can fight and finish them early.

Both biological defense and psychological defense are wonderful and they work great and as designed by the forces of evolution. And, thus, forgiveness [letting go of grievances, complains, resentment, letting go of the memory of apparent atrocities and thus... letting go of the pain] can occur only when something else, such a PEACE, love or freedom... becomes More Important that Survival! As long as "survival" remains the number one priority, the Pain remains operational.

IB is an interesting place where one can read opinions from many well-informed posters. Here, thanks to Dr. Chopra, anything may be discussed.

One day it may be religion and faith, followed the next by art and politics. On another day it could be mysticism and the supernatural, or biology and astronomy. Or maybe posters just want to do some small talk.

Tolle's "Pain body" is yet another useless mindless conceptual abstraction.

(He writes in his book A New Earth about "DENSE PAIN-BODIES", " ENTERTAINMENT, THE MEDIA, AND THE PAIN-BODY", " THE COLLECTIVE FEMALE PAIN-BODY", " NATIONAL AND RACIAL PAIN-BODIES", etc... see the link in post #82 for excerpts.)

Tell you what.

I have perfected a highly sophisticated technique for the surgical removal of the pain body. Can be done from a distance; but because of the long distance involved and the complexity of the technique it is costly.

However I can offer it at a discount (certain conditions apply).

Discretion is of the essence.

Please contact me privately.

Am currently working on the Ego, and have nearly finished a technique for the complete removal of the “Unconscious”.

Will you be able to explain it here in easy enough terminology for me to understand? Although I kinda like my unconsciousness at times.
Yo Irvine what about your pain.

derek

"Yo Irvine what about your pain."

Your pain, my pain, what difference, the perception of it is great opportunity for practice, practice is for shanti(peace).

One cannot see 'only thou' if he has turned away from his own pain, suffering, woundedness. A friend of mine said recently "what is it in me that fails to see the woundedness of others?"

I said I thought it was the failure to see our own woundedness, pain and suffering that keeps us from seeing it in others. Not the specifics of it, not the analyzation of it, not the psychology of why it's there, of what causes it, which I think is a total waste of time but just the fact that it is there.

Nostalgia...looking into the far distance at something unknown but so sweet in a sorrowful way, a perfect mix of joy and grief, is that what creativity is?

A "mix of joy and grief" seems like a heavy load to carry around, there is a romantic tradition around these themes as sources of inspiration:

(Baudelaire "les fleurs du mal")
"Sois sage, ô ma Douleur, et tiens-toi plus tranquille.
Tu réclamais le Soir; il descend; le voici:
Une atmosphère obscure enveloppe la ville,
Aux uns portant la paix, aux autres le souci."
...
keep quiet you my pain, and come to rest.
You were longing for dusk, it is descending, there it is:
An obscure atmosphere wraps the city,
to some it brings peace, to others concern.

or by Hitomaro:

When she was still alive
We would go out, arm in arm,
And look at the elm trees
Growing on the embankment
In front of our house.
Their branches were interlaced.
Their crowns were dense with spring leaves.
They were like our love.
Love and trust were not enough to turn back
The wheels of life and death.
She faded like a mirage over the desert.
One morning like a bird she was gone
In the white scarves of death.
Now when the child
Whom she left in her memory
Cries and begs for her,
All I can do is pick him up
And hug him clumsily.
I have nothing to give him.
In our bedroom our pillows
Still lie side by side,
As we lay once.
I sit there by myself
And let the days grow dark.
I lie awake at night, sighing till daylight.
No matter how much I mourn
I shall never see her again.
They tell me her spirit
May haunt Mount Hagai
Under the eagles' wings.
I struggle over the ridges
And climb to the summit.
I know all the time
That I shall never see her,
Not even so much as a faint quiver in the air.
All my longing, all my love
Will never make any difference.

Meet again when time is over,
Meet again to part no more;
How it cheers the drooping heart,
When from friends we’re called to part.

Meet again where endless joy
We shall taste without alloy;
Meet where songs shall never grow old,
Sweetly tuned to harps of gold.

Meet again, how passing sweet,
Friends long lost again to meet.
Careworn souls, by tempests driven,
O how sweet to meet in heaven.

AYE! yai yai yai. .i. irvine knows through his cosmic awareness that his chelas and students and devotees can only handle so much of the electric and terrifying truth as manifested through his most precious presence. ..d diablo really doesn't care about all that and he ignores anyone who would put him in a pickle with hard questions, as 'it' were ...or was, or is,...by simply sliding away and coming back later, as if the queries he doesn't want to deal with had never been put to his sacred heart... which doesn't care if anyone hasn't mentioned that before...oh wait..looking up over this I see I had said this...ok he's not here to answer questions and he forgets a lot too, but he's a loving old fart and he likes to refer to himself in the collective person because he's a little nuts as well as being supremely awakened and aware of the need for his selfless, wanted, and needed 'slaughterhouse 5' approach. He thinks .i irvine is a veritable font of other persons' imaginations and bullshit...which he likes to take credit for and claim as his knowledge because it doesn't matter, and those people that really have those thoughts etc.... well they are nothing! nothing he says! only beings in his imagination you know..well of course 'you' dont know...'you' ARE NOT! so cut that shit out. he's shocked that that should even be an issue. like this posting that replies to a post without ever really saying anything about the post replied to and is just posted to allow him to sit back and read it over and over and over and get that silly shit eating grin on his face that says.."gee 'i'm' so golly whillikers smart and stuff...but i'll give the credit to the 'universe' or the 'understanding' or the little old holy lady in the outer room who holds tissues for the readers of his omniscient and totally semi-intelligent (well ok ...not too dumb anyway) stuff about the terror of 'what is'. d diablo. is full aware that if his 'audience'[ha ha ha!!! oh me! oh my!..his psychotic belief and somatic delusion eh?]...if they( the audience hahahaha!) were to get a look at his 'self' satisfied and shit eating grin...it might blow his game and his cover. so for that reason he obfuscates his entire persona' with an incoherent and obtuse 'handle' for his true and christian name. when his words go unattended or unrecognized or....CHALLENGED for god's sake!...he is at a loss for the 'whyfor' or the 'howcome' or the 'whereto' of that...so it's obvious 'that' does not exist...there are no such things as things that he doesn't understand in his 'understanding'. and of course everyone who is, and is not, at the same and concurrent time as everything else that doesn't exist, look at his silly, soapy, and completely lost ideas about people and psychology and the real spiritual ideas and meanings as the 'truthspeak of a subnormal schoolboy. .d diablo doesn't like that shit even though he's above it. .d diablo will pout and ponder, and finally after a few hours or so of rehashing the 'same old same old'..from the same old same olds he considers 'wowsers' who have a way with words..and most likely women...he will return with a story or two that is just as weird and airheaded as he was posting before he started pouting. i irvine knows you are upset with him over his revelations and mind wanderings but gee he doesn't care..but he does love the ladies to tell him he's wonderful...even if some of them are himself...mayhap there is a bit of a hidden tendency towards eonism with d diablo, who knows? ....

GOOD FOR YOU! ....tada!...NO ONE knows because NO ON IS! oh my lord .d diablo even scares himself with his own profundity at times...even after saying the same thing hundreds of times...that's that memory thing prob that rears it's head from time to time hourly with him in his grandfatherly ways. anyway my loves...screw you... your dead meat anyway...you don't know what love is lovers because there is no such thing and .i irvine is getting tired of this bullshit and wants a scone with lots and lots of strawberries atop and canyons full of horse manure to study and learn from. right now though old and tired and unreasonably and unbelievably wise .d diablo needs to get together with his second generation kin and lie a little bit about how he cares for them. and to explain to them that that's why he never bothered saving any money for them because they too are nothing more then unconscionable smears on the face of the Pristine Flowingness that is his con and only hope of ever fooling anyone about anything..even though as .i irvine says.."there are no things"....what can you do? somebody has to bring the bad news, and he's only too glad to be the one...and you just never know...maybe someday, somewhere, sometime, someone might just come along and say 'oh sweet jesus, this man has knowledge and truth and wisdom'. and then maybe that someone who has connections and stuff will be the 'angel' who goes on to make him rich and famous in an after retirement bid for greatness and oohs and ahhs that please him, but he'll never say because he is soooooo coooooool! anyway AYE!...7 is not a lonely number, it's a good number, it's a number .i irvine likes, it's a man's number, it's a real 'number two'. the number 50 is too big a number for .d diablo to come to grips with. and the idea of planning ahead, or behind, a whole week is too strenuous a task. so let's deal with things and posts, and flying pigs and hogsheads..only on a day at a time basis. all in favor please say,."I IRVINE IS GOD!"..thank you.

"Yo Irvine what about your pain."

Your pain, my pain, what difference, the perception of it is great opportunity for practice, practice is for shanti(peace).

One cannot see 'only thou' if he has turned away from his own pain, suffering, woundedness.

hi Diablo,
what did you think of the debate tonight in California, between Obama and Hillary Clinton?

hi katie...

barack is a star...he showed poise and class...seemed presidential...

he voted against this stupid bushman war...billary showed poor judgement in voting for it...that disqualifies her..right there....i hope barack wins...but he has to win over a lot of racist folks to stand a fair chance...too bad! damn! girl!

hey D,
it seems so close in California, I don't know who will win ....
waiting, waiting
:)
~ Kate

california has over 350 del...winner take all..

so...900,000 barack...900,001 billary...over-the-hillary wins...too bad!

we need change and billary aint it! for sure!

Li'l Dakini, (per #84)

It's a numbers game, Katie!

What are you dialing up?

You are the most active political blogger here. I seldom come to this site of spirituality and self help to seek guidance as God has already blessed me with many things I wanted. But whenever he is angry, I come here to expiate my sins.

I have not heard the endorsement of IB for any presidential candidate so far. Are they still touting for Gore. Too bad. Why not for Obama?

Your eloquent thoughts will be highly appreciated by the holy folks for you are so close to God (a tad of God in yourself!) Thanks.

Hi HLG, I think Deepak Chopra has already conveyed(through Intentblog, HufingtonPost, Deepakchopra.com) with his blogs that he is impressed by Barack. But the number of people he can reach through blogs is limited. I suspect IB doesn't attract more than a thousand regular readers per month. I'm not sure how much audiences tune into listen to Deepak on Sirius radio, and no idea if he aired his views about the candidates. It is difficult to say how many voters actually get influenced by Deepak's formal/informal endorsements. If he had any clout, I guess the campaigns would have aggressively contacted him already.

Deepak's has a huge readership. His books have sold about 40 million. I'm guessing 5-10 million are sold in the US. He has authored about 40 books therefore could be some 500,000 - 1 Million unique readers. Deepak has been wring books for more than
30 years. His readership has been largely in the higher age group although there is a trend for younger ones in the recent years. I assume 200,000 - 500,000 readers are still alive. Out of them I suspect 100,000 - 300,000 have Democratic leanings. 75,000 - 200,000 could be registered voters. Out of them 20,000 -- 70,000 are willing to vote (spiritual oriented don't generally show interest in active politics.) I suspect 15,000 -- 40,000 are already barack obama supporters because of his idealistic and optimistic and spiritual message which is in sync with Deepak's writings. If Deepak can reach out to the other 5,000 -- 30,000 or so audiences who are with the other candidate through media, blogs, (perhaps a pre-planned politico-spiritual book could have done wonders..for a far larger audience), etc perhaps 5,000 - 25,000 primary voters nation-wide could change their preferences. The number although small could actually be vital in reaching the critical mass of political consensus.

Hey Diablo
Ya know, day in day out.

There's two things that I can't get past with Hillary. The whole Bush Clinton Bush Clinton saga and MANDATED health care.

With Obama it's that he is so slick and has the right words to SAY. Sometimes this is a sign of an Eddie Haskel, a person who is charming then abusive.

McCain spent time in a POW camp, he knows about hardship and pain.

And there's no way I'm voting for a religious person after having God run things so badly for the past seven years.

I can still write in a name, right?

Yo Diablo, everyone needs a little good energy shuffled their way.

Irvine
You slipped right over my head. I have no idea what you and your posse is talking about. Plain words and clear ideas go lot further.
Peace bro.

Diablo, If only your intuition were as expansive as your ego suggests! And quit picking on the spammers. They too have to regurgitate all the foul greasy food before they can eat at the Ritz. (I'm just sayin')

hi derek

"Plain words and clear ideas go lot further."

Couldn't agree more.
