Zappy hosts Grateful Dead Television Show “The Long Strange Trip Continues”

Zappy - January 06, 2008

The Grateful Dead’s “Intent” is focused on sharing, and embodies many Kabalistic principles.

I had a lot of fun hosting this show for Lorne Michael’s College Television Network.

The show is a behind the scenes look at the legendary band and it’s legions of fans known as “Dead Heads,” of which I am one.

Most of us are familiar with the music of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead.

What many people don’t know, however, was that Garcia was himself a ‘Kabalist,” and he used the principles of Kabala to turn his band into one of the biggest successes of all time.

First, he saw that “Less is More,” and created a time in every live concert for what he called “space,” when he played freely, explored new sounds and structures, and created a unique experience for every show, rather than jam-pack them with hit after radio-played hit. It’s also interesting to note that Garcia only had nine fingers due to a childhood accident, perhaps having less fingers is what allowed him to play more dynamically.

Second, he learned to “Eliminate the Process” by cutting down on the time he spent recording in the studios and promoting albums, and performing over 200 concerts a year instead, adding new elements to his songs all the time, and often performing songs he would never record.

Finally, Jerry Garcia was a great proponent of the principle of “Sharing,” inviting people to record his concerts for their own enjoyment, rather than monopolizing the rights to his music. By allowing himself to share with the public, he ensured a more loyal following than perhaps any other musician in modern history.

Watching this video is a glimpse into the energy of the band, and the power of their sharing message.

Enjoy! Peace. Zappy
