Obama, in an effort to show strength, has come up with a new, and some ways exclusive, theater for the US armed forces. He talks about military operations in the nuclear power Pakistan, operations that he, as commander-in-chief, would order even without the approval of the United Nations. This is "the war we need to win." he says again and again.

Lily,

It is not easy to live the truth in a world of fiction. That is our incentive to dissolve the world's fictions so that life becomes easier and those that wish to live the truth are not at a disadvantage or subject to persecution.

Keith, sometimes you sound drunk with the Holy Spirit. I wonder if there is a connection with calling alcohol "spirits". Perhaps the effects of the two are much the same.

goodwednesday all,

Well, I really do not feel the need to be a gracious loser when it comes to the democratic race to choose a presiential nominee.

When I saw that CNN projected Obama win after about 5 minuets, once the polls closed in Wisconsin, I just turned it off. p'od.

It looks like Hillary is going to lose to this "Mr. Golden Tongue." And after having to sit by and watch George Bush get elected, twice, by this Nation, the first time, really, I do not even remember what he ran on, but, supposedly, he was going to be the "clean as a whistle Jesus loving morality guy" hired to replace loose zippered low moraled Bill Clinton and the second time, well, we elected him because...let's see..if I can remember...oh, he took us to war, f'd it up, so, we needed to let him f it up some more...NOW..it brings me to Obama, well, he has a record, somewhere, I am sure, just do not blink or you might miss it..he did write two books, but who the heck hasn't? Hmmm. oh, yes he likes to borrow the winning lines from fellow political buddies and give the masses his little twist to them when he gives his little political preaching sermon...gee..what am I missing here...well he did say he was going to be the Uniter, and, from where I sit, he has held true to this, imo, because the Democrats just like their fellow Republicans go for the same type of Candidate when choosing who to lead them and that is the Candidate that makes them feel the "happiest, the best, the most moral, the candidate who can make them feel they can reach to the sky(....even though their actual arms(record, accomplishments, EXPERIENCE, etc.) are quite short...in short, their Candidates do not have to EARN the position, they just have to WANT it and be able to say the magic words to enter their kingdom....the Oval Office.

This Nation is going to face very serious issues and there are serious foreign policy matters to be dealt with, I could go on and on but what does America do, again...elect the "kid," the "junior," the charmer."

So, Unlike Michelle Obama I am not proud of this Nation, I feel instead of seriously stepping back and getting a grip on what is at stake in this election they have chosen instead to take a magic carpet ride with Barak Obama.

By the way, to all of the Americans who toss the need for exerience out the window... EXPERIENCE does matter(especially, in this job at this particulary time in our history) and I have a feeling we will come to understand this in our future as a Nation.

You know what this reminds me of...remember all those "very, very, highly educated fellows that were hired "on the basis of their "educated education each with a list of degrees from all the "fav ivy league universities" and how these men were courted, drooled over, by the top hiring execs at various business in our Nation and how all those businesses, usually, after hiring these "miracle geniuses" ended up only to have to let them go in a few years while they tried to salvage their ailing business. This is what the Barak Obama movement remind me of. anyway...

I feel better now that I got that off my chest...thanks for listening....have a great day everyone, ruth

Alec Baldwin: Obama vs. Clinton: What Tips the Scales

Watching some Democrats kick around Mrs. Clinton has grown into a sad spectacle.

Hillary Clinton would make a fine president and I think all reasonable people know that. She would make a better president, offering more constructive policies protecting more Americans, than McCain could ever hope to. Her problem is that Americans, in any given election cycle, can become inflamed with a true passion for change that can only exist in a country like ours. She does not represent that change as well as Mr. Obama does. In spite of her superior capabilities in many areas, Obama would still move into the White House with more foreign policy experience than George Bush had when Bush and his brother stole the election in 2000.

Americans can put up with a lot. After these past eight years, they have proven that they can put up with more than anyone ever imagined. However, that cannot hold forever.

What Mrs. Clinton has that Mr. Obama does not have, Mr. Obama can get. What Mr. Obama has that Mrs. Clinton does not have, she can never get.

Which one is the best hope at defeating McCain, who sounds more like a Bush brother with every passing day?

Hey everyone, my name's Nikolai and I'm a bit new here!

I wanted to let everyone know that an Afghan journalist, Mr. Ahmed Ghous Zalmai, has been arrested by the Afghan government and may be executed. The reason is Mr. Zalmai’s translation of The Koran into Dari, the Afghani version of Farsi. Mr. Zalmai has been a proponent of human rights since the Soviet occupation and now may be killed because of attempting to extend the readership of The Koran. Governments loose control over people when people are given the opportunity to read things for themselves, in this case The Koran, and make their own judgments instead of listening to what the governments tells them.

Governments often attempt to silence the voices of intellectuals and humanists, who try and make this world a better place. The Soviets did it with the Gulags, sending away a generation of intellectuals to die in gloom, and even today in The Unites States people would rather label you than listen to your words, comforted in thinking that by labeling things they have a better grip on a complex word.

hey - just wanted to let everyone know that History Channel International is showing a program about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi right now

The esteemed Deepak Chopra says:
"Waking up means seeing clearly who we are and what needs to be done. It means not blindly voting against your own interest."

In a Wisconsin rally last week Barack Obama declared "...our troops are sent to fight tour after tour of duty in a war that should've never been authorized and should've never been waged," and derided those who "use 9/11 to scare up votes."

Yet the Illinois senator has vowed in the debates, time and again, not to reduce the balooning US military budget--which consumes an estimated $700 billion annually--but rather to increase it. He has called for the recruitment of another 65,000 soldiers for the Army as well as 27,000 more Marines. He has vowed to put "more boots on the ground" in the "war on terror," the pretext invented by the Bush administration to justify "preemptive war."

As for Iraq itself, his promise to end the war are belied by his pledge to keep American forces in Iraq to defend "US interests" and conduct "counterterrorism operations," a formula that would see tens of thousands of US soldiers and Marines continuing to occupy Iraq.

Oh yes, Mr Deepak Chopra, you are correct, waking up means not blindly voting against your own interest.

Nice try #22, you can convince yourself with your wishful distortions and Hillary bias -- no thanks.

After Losing Ten In A Row Clinton Tries To Change The Rules

Obama beat Clinton in a landslide in Hawaii, making it ten in a row. Steve Benen is back at The Carpetbagger Report and looks at Clinton’s options. There is one more option left to add: change the rules.

If this post was for the regular SciFi Friday feature I might note that part of the legend of James T. Kirk is the manner in which he was the only Star Fleet officer to pass the Kobayashi Maru simulation because he cheated and changed the rules. Similarly we like to watch J.R. Ewing or Tony Soprano break the rules. Often in fiction we cheer on a cheater, but not when the matter is running for President of the United States.

Political Punch reports on how Clinton is trying to change the rules:

"This morning brings the news that the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, has launched a new website where they are announcing how they are officially preparing to make the case that the rules of the Democratic nomination process should be changed.

Among many “facts” they declare are some accurate ones, such as the idea that superdelegates, which in true nomenclatural dexterity they now term “automatic delegates” “are expected to exercise their best judgment in the interests of the nation and the Democratic Party.”

But then comes this juicy non-fact:

“FACT: Florida and Michigan should count, both in the interest of fundamental fairness and honoring the spirit of the Democrats’ 50-state strategy.”

That’s not a fact, that’s an opinion.

And it’s clear evidence (not that there was any mystery about it) that the Clinton campaign is trying to change the rules in the middle of the game.

Clinton’s own senior adviser, Harold Ickes, voted as a member of the DNC committee to not recognize these two state delegations because they violated the rules of the primary scheduling process. Now as a Clinton campaign representative he’s making the case that they should count."

Trapper is also correct that those supporting Obama are wrong if they claim that super delegates should follow the lead of regular delegates. The super delegates are certainly free to vote contrary to the lead of the regular delegates, but I’m sure that many understand the consequences. The Democratic leaders must decide if they represent only those hard core Democrats who were loyal to the party when they were in the minority or if they want to embrace the support of independents who now lean Democratic. The super delegates are free to ignore the independent voters and stick with the party insider, but to do so will mean that John McCain and not Barack Obama will be the next president. My bet is that the super delegates want to win and want to build a majority party, leaving no alternative but to repudiate the politics of Hillary Clinton.

As Trapper writes, some of the “facts” claimed by the Clinton campaign are not facts at all. Throughout the campaign they have maintained an Orwellian named Fact Hub which presents propaganda as fact. I fear that this is the same mentality which leads to a president making false claims such as using the 9/11 attacks to justify the Iraq war. We must not forget that Hillary Clinton joined Bush in making such false claims. In justifying her vote in favor of the war, Clinton said:

" And finally, on another personal note, I come to this decision from the perspective of a Senator from New York who has seen all too closely the consequences of last year’s terrible attacks on our nation. In balancing the risks of action versus inaction, I think New Yorkers who have gone through the fires of hell may be more attuned to the risk of not acting. I know that I am.

Clinton might also be breaking the rules regarding the use of 527 organizations. Mark Ambinder describes how Clinton backers are “canvassing Clinton donors for pledges of up to $100,000 in the hope of raising at least $10M by the end of next week.”

By law, the 527 cannot coordinate its activities with the Clinton campaign, although at least one major Clinton donor with direct ties to the campaign said last night that the effort was an open secret among donors.

(Update: Per ABC’s Jake Tapper, the group is calling itself the “American Leadership Project” and is staffed by several veterans of the Clinton White House.)

A Clinton spokesman said he knew nothing about the 527."

When engaging in questionable tactics the Clinton campaign fails to understand that this is why they are in the situation they are in to begin with. The more Clinton engages in tying to break the rules and in dishonest campaigning, the more Obama’s call for change resonates. Clinton cannot defeat a real call for change by repeatedly offering herself as an example of exactly why change is needed.

I believe George Bush does a lousy job at self-promotion, however, his accomplishments in Africa did not go unnoticed by Bob Geldof. Of course MSM will not report Geldof's statement, and the Obama supporters will just shrug this off as meaningless. I haven't heard much from the Dems on their help Africa policy, we didn't hear much from Bush either, he just did it and the people in the know understands his accomplishments. Gee how can a man of non-color really get it?

From Investors.com:
Bill Clinton might have been America's first black president, but it seems he didn't do as much for Africa as Bush has. Bob Geldof, Irish rocker and Africa activist, says the Texas oilman, who is wrapping up his second trip to the continent, "has done more than any other president so far."

That's high praise from Geldof, a man who has spent much of the last 20 years fixated on Africa's many problems. He sees Bush's efforts to fight disease and poverty in Africa as "the triumph of American policy." Though he says it was "unexpected of the man," Geldof admits both the president and the nation "rose to the occasion.
Geldof rightly chastises the American media for ignoring Bush's contributions to Africa."

.
Cheers,

Steve

On Iraq, Hillary and Obama (and Edwards) have a similar plan.

"As for Iraq itself, his promise to end the war are belied by his pledge to keep American forces in Iraq to defend "US interests" and conduct "counterterrorism operations," a formula that would see tens of thousands of US soldiers and Marines continuing to occupy Iraq."

This is no different from Hillary's. FYI, there are troops in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia for exactly the same purpose. No one is complaining about it. If he had an other opinion you would say he is "naive".

You can argue for whatever it is worth, but your attempt to legitimatize your argument by associating to what Deepak's name shows the innate weakness and flaws just under the surface.

Amba: "Bill Clinton might have been America's first black president, but it seems he didn't do as much for Africa as Bush has."

True. But he was not called the "first black president" for all the good things he did for the Black race. That was a cultural reference to his personality, a reference to his MTV image when he was running during primaries in 91.

Re #16 ....oh yea, I noticed tat Alec Baldwin blog and it gives me great pleasure to know that Alec and I support different Candidates in this democratic race....I must be perceiving something right!

ruth

I think it's important for the Clinton supporters to remember that our country is in deep trouble, and that Hillary Clinton is responsible for many of these problems.

In NH she boasted of going against the Oil Companies, in Texas she proudly said that she is all for new oil refineries which sudeenldy became environmentally friendly (of course truth is they are not!) and mentioned Obama voted against it.

In Texas, Hillary argues that inspiration does not put food on the table, but the truth is her experience has taken food from the table when she enthusiastically pushed for the ratification of NAFTA. With NAFTA, many jobs were moved overseas and America's middle-class dwindled.

Hillary claims that she is in the "solutions business" on healthcare; but her only success was insulting Republicans, and pushing a healthcare reform plan in 93, 94 that was doomed to fail from the start.

Hillary Clinton claims that she has passion and immense care towards children but voted against the ban of cluster bombs which maim children so that she look "tough on terror". Obama voted for the ban.

Hillary claims that she is in the saving life business, but her vote to allow President Bush to invade Iraq under false pretext took away over a million lives on both sides of an unjustified war.

Hillary claims that she has learned from her mistakes, but she still voted to give President Bush a second benefit of the doubt when it comes to Iran - the Kyl-Lieberman amendment. Obama voted against it.

Hillary claims that she has won against tough Republican opponents in elections; but the truth is that when she won in New York, she never ran there against tough Republicans, she ran against two unknown and Republican lightweights who could not even raise money there.

Hillary's legislative record and experience in actually passing laws and authoring or sponsoring bills pales in comparison with Obama.

The real fairy tale Hillary Clinton and her so-called experience, and the "Solutions Candidate" whose record is the exact opposite of what she is now trying to portray.

Hilary refuses to release her records as a first lady. But she is running on that "experience". Is that Co-Presidency? Id so, she doesn't desrve more than 2 terms. No president can; for a GOOD reason.

Hillary said at a debate on national TV that she is happy to take money from Washington lobbyists. Hillary receives more money from them than just any other US Senator and any other presidential candidate on both sides. She is in their pockets.

She refuses to release her tax papers until at least she secures the nomination. Then she can buy time for damage control.

#26

You are quite presumptous in your projections. It is naive on your part to assume that because one can discern the two faces of Barack Obama, that they automatically are endorsing Mrs. Clinton.

Also, from your statement that " ...there are troops in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia for exactly the same purpose. No one is complaining about it," shows that Obama and his supporters do not object to US hegemony, but choose to ignore it.

Nice try on your part, but no thanks.

hello again,

just caught this at CNN.online

Steven Kazmierczak had been taking three drugs prescribed for him by his psychiatrist, the Northern Illinois University gunman's girlfriend told CNN. Jessica Baty said her boyfriend of two years had been taking Xanax, used to treat anxiety, and Ambien, a sleep agent, as well as the antidepressant Prozac. She said he stopped taking Prozac three weeks before the Valentine's Day rampage. full story'

Really, how much can a body/mind handle taking these drugs and combining them? You have to wonder about the Doctors perscribing them?

God, I know sooo many indididuals who take anti-depressants, or anti-anxiety or sleep medication it seems epidemic, it is worrisome, indeed.

Dear Ambasteve:

Re your #25

Of course the American media doesn't have time to cover someone who actually *does something.* If they did, they wouldn't have time to *talk* about their own rock star.

Kudos to Mr. Bush. He can dance too.

"It is naive on your part to assume that because one can discern the two faces of Barack Obama, that they automatically are endorsing Mrs. Clinton."

I don't care, if you are... or not "endorsing" whatever shill, 99% of people fit that bill, but you are as much ignorant and naive about "two faces of Obama". His plan is very clear. And he is not naive. And you are naive in your understanding of the complex middle eastern geo-political stability/instability. Obama is an American Progressive leader on all fronts. He is the best bet. And MoveOn for ex. has realized this on the basis of his polices than anything else.

TheShadow aka Smart-aleckistch, your fake enthusiasm for seeking new info and awareness is not authentic...so I have to pass it for now. Maybe some other day. Bets of times, worst of times.

hey there all,

finally, the Saint is being shown to be just a man afterall....

below is by Dr. Sylvia Welsh associated with NYU Institute and University her article appeared at huffpo...Barak Obama and Why it Matters....

"And this is why it matters that Barack Obama is now furiously trying to suggest that it's "no big deal" that he plagiarized his friend's, Deval Patrick's, speech. He's even claiming that Mr. Patrick told him to use the speech. Perhaps Mr. Patrick did. Perhaps Mr. Patrick told him to use the speech and never told him to say it was written by Mr. Patrick and not by Mr. Obama. It doesn't matter, actually, what Mr. Patrick said or did not say to Mr. Obama. What matters is that Mr. Obama passed this speech off as his own, adding only his by now customary flourishes of tone and inflection. That the man who has presented himself to this country as the man of integrity and change turns out to be a fraud — and that is what we call people who pretend that someone else's words are their own — must be a profound disappointment for his supporters, if they can be honest enough with themselves to admit it.

However, what's even more disheartening and heartbreaking is this: Mr. Obama, in his historic bid for the Presidency, represented an ideal with whom children from broken homes, of mixed racial origins, of no great means, of inner turmoil who seek refuge in drugs, could all look up to and strive to be. In one fell swoop of his unwritten-with pen, he has dashed the hope that here stood a man who pulled himself together and got it together.

Here stood a man who towered above others in his quest for decency and integrity. Here stood a man who played it straight and said it as he saw it. But Mr. Obama is not that man. This man, as it turns out, is just another guy who seems to have bought into his own hype about how wonderful he is even as he tries to convince us he is not simply a liar. Worse still, he has been shown to be a liar while he has paradoxically been running his entire campaign based virtually exclusively on his stellar character, a character he has claimed that is so different from all those Washington insiders he has sought to set himself apart from.

Listening to the pundits of Slate Magazine claim that this charge of plagiarism "won't stick" with the voters because "with Obama, there's no pattern of lying," only adds insult to injury. I'm sure that even Slate Magazine remembers that Mr. Obama's so-called autobiography, Dreams From My Father, was discovered not to be entirely factual, as well. It took Mr. Obama some time, as I recall, to finally admit that, yes, some of the characters were not real but were, rather, "composite" characters. In other words, they were fiction. Which means that, in other words, he lied about it and never told anyone that his autobiography was not only not entirely written by him (check with his ghost writer), but that his so-called life was not exactly what he claimed it was.

Children know that not telling the truth, either by omission or commission, is the definition of a lie. Perhaps there is more of a pattern to Mr. Obama's distortions and omissions than even these two rather egregious examples point to. As a clinician, I have found that if one lies about one or two things here or there and then makes light of those lies, and acts as if the ones who find this offensive are the ones making mountains out of molehills, you can almost take it to the bank that a deeper pattern of not telling it like it is exists. It's only a matter of time before it becomes more fully exposed. So, it's suffer the children yet again. Yet again, a grownup who might actually have served as the inspiration he so adamantly claims he is, turns out to be another scammer who, when caught in the scam, does what every child does: he says, "it's no big deal." And then he has the audacity to cast aspersions on the ones who caught him. Even the children I see don't do that.

You know I really had to reflect on why I couldn't join the Barak Obama wagon train and wondered why I couldn't see what everyone else was seeing but it gets a little clearer each day and Barak Obama is proving to be the politician I always thought he was....gee, he seems pretty adept at it for a novice, no?

ruth

hisullokige

Guess that means "Yes, you Can't."

lo! you bring up the plagiarism nonscandal...
DO you know Hillary Clinton plagiarized form Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter in her stump speeches this season? And used lines from Obama? It is a well known fact about Obama borrowing lines from his buddy Deval. He even attributed the lines in NH! Talk about hypocrisy! And teh voters in Wisconsin rejected these charges and mean spirited attacks from Clinton and they made them pay at the ballots.

Clinton’s Role in Plagiarism Charges Exposed by Media

Ever since Clinton found that she was being seriously challenged by Barack Obama we have seen a steady stream of dishonest attacks as the Clinton campaign decided they would say or do anything to attempt to win. After falsely accusing Obama of plagiarism, the Clinton tried to claim that it was reporters and not their campaign which was raising the charge. AP has debunked this latest lie out of the Clinton campaign:

"Hillary Rodham Clinton says reporters, not her campaign, uncovered evidence of Democratic rival Barack Obama sharing speech lines with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

She made the claim Tuesday despite the fact her campaign posted video clips on YouTube illustrating similarities in the speeches and has suggested in several instances that the shared lines amount to plagiarism.

In debunking Clinton’s claims, AP also says that, “Any suggestion that the story had a life of its own, apart from the Clinton campaign, is disingenuous.”"

Clinton has based her campaign utilizing Rove-style attacks. This was the worst possible strategy to use against a candidate who is being supported largely due to promising change from precisely this type of politics.

How about some TRUTH vs. urban myth?

The Curious Myth of Hillary Clinton's Senate Effectiveness by Adam Hanft

Frankly, I'm tired of listening to Senator Clinton portray herself as being in the solutions business -- as boasting a nice, fat resume of accomplishments -- while mocking Barack Obama for being a rhetorical empty suit.

Is she truly a beacon of experience? Because I couldn't think of a single piece of legislation that has her name stuck proudly on the front of it, no equivalent of McCain-Feingold, for example, I headed straight for her campaign website to see what glorious aspects of her vaunted experience I was missing.

Actually, I was missing nothing. There is not one single example of any legislation with her name appended to it. In fact, the page devoted to her Senate biography is a mush-mash, a laundry list of good intentions. When she talks about "sponsoring" and "introducing" and "fighting for" legislation that obviously hasn't passed, that's a smokescreen for failure. By introducing all that legislation that never makes it out of committee, she's guilty of what she accuses Senator Obama of: confusing "hoping" with doing.

Consider these examples:

• "...{she} worked with her colleagues to secure the funds New York needed to recover and rebuild."

• "...she fought to provide compensation to the families of the victims."

• "She is an original sponsor of legislation that expanded health benefit to members of the National Guard and Reserves."

• "Some of Hillary' proudest achievements have been her work to ensure the safety of prescription drugs for children, with legislation now included in the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act." (What in God's name does that mumbo-jumbo mean?)

Yes, it's true that for many years, she was in the minority. But if she is the effective legislator she claims to be, she'd be able find co-sponsors across the aisle who share her commitment to specific issues, in the same way that John McCain found his doppelganger, Russ Feingold.

But an inability to get legislation passed is just the beginning of Senator Clinton's shallow record. For many of the bills she introduced, she couldn't even get a cosponsor in her own party!

Below are some perfectly fine, liberal, progressive bills that she introduced, but was unable to attract a cosponsor of any party, according to the Library of Congress.

Note that while her website proclaims that "She is an original sponsor of legislation that expanded health benefit to member of the National Guard and Reserves", she wasn't able to rustle up a single cosponsor for legislation that would have extended military retirement credit for National Guard Members called up after 9/11.

So Senator Clinton is right when she claims to be the experienced candidate, although it's not the experience she would like us to believe. It's a track record of legislative failure and futility.

Now those are FACTS not distortions!

Yes in Wisconsin, Obama promised "tax cuts for working people, health care reform, better pay and a government that would 'protect pensions, not CEO bonuses."

Yet, last Sunday's BusinessWeek noted that after learning of his victory in the Maine Democratic caucuses, Obama sat down at his computer to exchange emails with Robert Wolf, CEO of UBS America, one of his major Wall Street "bundlers," responsible for bringing in millions in donations from fellow multi-millionaires to finance what Obama refers to as his "movement." According to estimates made by the Center for Responsive Politics, 80 percent of the money raised by the Obama campaign last year came from donors affiliated with business, with Wall Street leading the Pack. More than half of the money came in the form of donations totaling $2,300 or more.

All of the above is on the record, should anyone care to check.

My question? Which side of your mouth is real Mr. Obama?

the cut and paster just doesn't get it!

Down with patriotism up with Jesus! Down with patriotism up with Jesus . . .

Listen up, Hillary's negatives are way higher than Obama can ever achieve. Character assassinations won't do. Apart form his ability to inspire, Obama has intellect, judgment and integrity more than Hillary.

If Hillary cannot overcome the Obama's so called "empty" theme for Change and Hope how can she even imagine to overcome Guns, Gays and God is she runs against the Republican machine?

TheShadow, Obama WILL win the nomination. Accept the reality or you can go join the McCain Campaign or work for 527s, they will pay you handsomely for your imagination, creativity and wishful bias...and moreover for you anti-Obama passion.

The Clinton 527
by Adam B
Wed Feb 20
Daily Kos

Let's be clear: when a 527 forms for the express purpose of electing or defeating a particular federal candidate, and engages in public advocacy towards such ends -- as opposed to discussing issues -- it is breaking the law. Period. The Media Fund, Swift Boaters and other 527s have paid six-figure fines for acting like a political action committee -- i.e., engaging in express advocacy and soliciting its donors with the major purpose of helping identifiable federal candidates -- but without abiding by any of the individual contribution limits or disclosure requirements attaching to PACs.

But when you've lost 25 of 36 contests ...

"Allies of Hillary Clinton plan an expensive, stealth campaign to buttress her standing in the must-win states of Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania.

They're canvassing Clinton donors for pledges of up to $100,000 in the hope of raising at least $10M by the end of next week. The money will be placed in the account of a political committee organized under section 527 of the tax code."

ABC News has more:

"ABC News has learned that a group of Democratic politicos have set up a new independent 527 organization called the American Leadership Project (ALP) with the express purpose of helping Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, beat Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, in Ohio, and possibly Texas and Pennsylvania as well.

Free from campaign finance rules, ALP will not be legally permitted to coordinate with the Clinton campaign, but it is clearly intended to help her.

...ALP has developed three ads aimed at tarnishing Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as a talker and not a doer -- the ads are called "If speeches could solve problems" -- and they will contrast Obama and Clinton on issues of importance to middle class voters, such as the economy, health care, and the mortgage crisis.

The plan right now is for the TV ads to never actually mention Obama -- rather, the statements about rhetoric vs. reality will go after him through implication, the contrast between Clinton and Obama already being so well-known."

I want to highlight that last quote to make clear the lengths to which this 527 will have to go to even arguably have a case that it's discussing "issues" and not candidates. Maybe they've found a magic loophole, but in all likelihood, they haven't, though their first ad follows all the rules in terms of "don't mention the election! just tell people to make phone calls!"

Why? Because based on those FEC precedents, a group that forms on the eve of primary elections, advertises only in the immediate primary election states, and has no track record whatsoever of any kind of "issue advocacy" outside such context ... well, it's damn hard in those circumstances to claim you're not in it for the purpose of influencing the elections.

[The only piece of the puzzle we don't have yet is what's being told to potential supporters, but since the website listed in that ad produces a dead link, we have no idea.]

The 527's leadership might be counting on two things: first, without a functioning Federal Election Commission, any complaint filed against this 527 remains a nullity; and, second, any subsequent fine might just be seen as a necessary "tax" on their efforts, the cost of doing business to get Clinton elected. Two weeks ago, the WSJ quoted two of these Clinton bundlers:

" "We're just trying to figure out things to do to help," Ms. Buell said. "We all feel very passionate about it, so the question is, what is the best thing we can do to get her across the finish line?"

Another Clinton fund-raiser, who didn't want to be named because he hasn't made a final decision, said he may pump as much as $500,000 into television, radio and newspaper ads for Mrs. Clinton.... This person says he feels he has done all he can for the campaign from the inside. He has donated the maximum $2,300 allowed by law for the primary to Mrs. Clinton, and he has tapped out his fund-raising network. He says Mrs. Clinton must win in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania to secure the nomination, but he worries that her campaign will not be able to afford to fund the ads she will need."

Having major campaign bundlers involved in gutting the individual contribution limits cannot be the answer.

In December, both Barack Obama and John Edwards demanded that 527s purporting to support them cease their activities and denounced their efforts; will Clinton do the same?

Clinton's New 527 Will Backfire: A Drummer Explains Why.

Yesterday the string of defeats continued, and today we learn that Clinton's campaign is launching a "stealth 527." You remember those -- Swift Boat attacks and all? It isn't likely to work.

Back in my musician days we had a drummer who hardly ever spoke. He just sat on his stool at rehearsals, a cigarette in his lips, and played his instrument. But one day when we were talking about why some groups made it big and others didn't, he looked up and said:

"People don't let you into their lives unless you create a world they want to inhabit, one that's more exciting and attractive than their own."

He was right, and his observation holds for politicians, too -- especially presidential candidates. To paraphrase the Talmud, "whoever creates one campaign creates a world entire." Obama's 10-state sweep is a reflection of the very different worlds he and his opponent have created. She and her advisors clearly resent that fact, but she's a bear-trap situation now. The more she struggles against it, the more it works against her.

Oddly enough, McCain and his advisors seem to have a better sense of this than the Clinton team does. Take this piece, in which GOP operative Sara Taylor describes a potential McCain VP as "a conservative, rock-n-roll Republican." While the phrase "rock and roll Republican" may create snickers in some circles, she's showing that she understands the same simple truth that my old drummer pointed out: If your world doesn't seem like an uplifting or positive place, people won't let you into their lives.

The Clinton team, whose greatest strength was Bill's (aka "Elvis's") rock and roll sensibility, still doesn't get it. This time around their theme seems to be "recess is over." It's not working, and yet they show no inclination to change.

It didn't have to be that way. Hillary could have spoken of her dreams and aspirations throughout this campaign. Bill could have used his rhetorical skills to move people, rather than to take ineffective and counterproductive cheap shots. The campaign as a whole could have embraced and usurped the themes hope and idealism -- or at least tried -- rather than mocking and deriding the idea that a new generation could be stirred and uplifted.

The old crop of Democratic consultants she has used has been a disaster for Sen. Clinton. Their advice -- don't back down on your war vote, stay on the attack -- has only added to the voters' impression that her "world" is a dark and negative place.

And the hits just keep on coming. The vapid and counterproductive suggestions offered by these Democratic "experts" show why conventional Democratic Party wisdom is a dry well. Take Dan Gerstein, late of Joe Lieberman's last notorious campaign:

"She can't win by affirmatively making the case for herself ...The best thing she can do is either discredit Obama or raise doubts about him. I hate to say it, but in certain respects, it's using the Bush strategy against Kerry against Obama and raising doubts about his willingness to use force to keep the country safe."

It's hard to believe anybody still pays these guys, isn't it? The fact is, Clinton's been using "the Bush strategy" for some time, whether it's by going needlessly negative or by raising the specter of terrorist attack should her opponent win. And here's the problem: It reminds voters of Bush. And voters, especially Democratic voters, don't like Bush.

Following advice like this is a great way to blow a commanding lead and wind up fighting for your political survival. And now we learn that "allies of Hillary Clinton plan an expensive, stealth campaign to buttress her standing in the must-win states of Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania."

Can she recover from her free fall using negative tactics borrowed from the 2004 Republican playbook? It's possible, but it doesn't seem likely. Once again, it seems reminiscent of a world that Democratic voters and the electorate in general seem eager to escape. And should she somehow prevail this way, it will certainly give John McCain a great way to make the case that he's a more "honest politician" who's more likely to "change Washington." After all, he's opposed 527s since McCain/Feingold.

It's a shame. Sen. Clinton is a brilliant and gifted person. I've always assumed she would be a good president. But the calculations she has made in search of the presidency, starting with that war vote in 2002, undercut her chances and raised questions about her judgment.

Time will tell whether this latest strategem will work -- but so far, people have been less and less inclined to inhabit this campaign's increasingly dark world.

_______________

One last question: It seems almost surrealistic, but did Sen. Clinton actually lie ... about plagiarism? This article [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/19/clinton-fingerprints-on-p_n_87468.html]suggests that she did. That would be a falsehood about an arguably false accusation of falsehood. If it's true, then this election has gotten so 'meta,' so conceptually recursive, so drenched in cascading layers of embedded meaning, that it could drive a semiotician insane.

By that logic, most CEOs should be routing for Hillary or McCain?! And she should be raising millions with their support. I think those CEOs who supported Obama are not so much attached to their tax rates that they risk good, better and high paying jobs and stable good governance which will offset any rising taxes and also maybe keep their hopes for a better America for all at the small expense of the high money they earn. So it should not surprise if CEOs are split between the both candidates. After all CEOs are also concerned citizens and some may believe in a small sacrifice for what they hope for a better society.

Btw, Obama doesn't take money from federal lobbyists and PACs , Hillary does and is the largest taker than any senator or Presidential candidate.

Oh, and Barack Obama has about a million donors in total! (A record unheard of)... mostly small donors who contribute less than 200 dollars...unlike Hillary whose donors have mostly maxed out...and now some of her concerned multimillionaire supporters are now forming 527s...to protect their self-interests...

good evening everyone,

hisullokige/Irvine/Venessa how many id's you gots, uh?

Little D, your idol Mr. Obama, may, for sure, win the nomination but it will be because he was the stellar politician of all time...he knew just where and how and when to stoke the masses...and I must say that NO vote paid off, big time, really, your man may be a breath fresh air to those like you who have lost your sense of smell but for those of us with that sense still in tact it smells more like rotten eggs.

He may have had trouble coming clean about his "Frey" incident....making up stuff and calling it autobiographic and his using a ghost writer while taking the credit for all the writing and using his buddies most popular speech slogans and not giving credit where credit is due....heck, I even do that when I copy from someone's article if I cut and paste here at IB, even, I KNOW TO DO THAT...yes, little ole granny knows how important it is to give credit where credit is due when you use the words of others, and it just happened to slip Barak Obama's mind....god, I think not.......BUT.....YET....he had NO trouble taking credit for and reminding folks of his ONE HIT WONDER...the great...NO VOTE.

Listen, when a man sells himself to the masses as being of a more honest character, sells his truthfullness like hot cakes on the National stage in order to gain the most powerful office in the land....he should be able to pass a lie detector test, don't you think...I think Barak Obama just failed his...

Looks like Barak Obama is just your average run of mill politican who can slip and slide with the best of them....finally, we get to a little truth about the man instead of all the hyped mania.

have a great evening all, ruth

Clinton says 'if' not 'when' she is president
Boston Globe

PARMA, Ohio -- Is Hillary Clinton's confidence slipping?

The New York senator sounded upbeat today as she took questions from a by-invitation-only roundtable discussion in Ohio, a state many political observers believe she must win to stay in the running for the Democratic nomination. She detailed her policy proposals for the mortgage crisis, for foreign policy, and for healthcare.

She talked about sending her husband, former President Bill Clinton, around the world on undetailed missions, and pointed out the success of her husband's trip to Indonesia with former President George H. W. Bush after the tsunami there.

But when asked about running a bipartisan White House, Clinton slipped.

"We will bring into the United States government, if I'm your president, distinguished members of both parties,'' Clinton told the group at a Parma diner.

From the start of her campaign, Clinton has commonly said, "when I am president,'' suggesting she did not envision a scenario in which she might lose.

Clinton is favored to win March 4 in Ohio, where lower-income and labor union voters comprise a substantial part of the electorate. But recent polls show Clinton and Obama in a virtual tie in Texas, also considered a must-win state for her on March 4.

Hey Ambasteve, long time no talk.

Quite some time ago you appointed someone’s wingman. Since then you were absent for a while and so are those two other guys, or at least they are unable to post under their original names.

It is kind of sad to see what has happened at intentblog. We had some good, and at times heated discussions about faith, religion, science, politics and many other issues. We were talking to each other and learning from it and felt like a community. For many it came to an abrupt end when the censoring began. One of those banned posters would like to assure the other, and anyone else willing to listen, I never spammed IB and always appreciated the opportunity to present science and reason as an alternative to faith, unreason and superstition.

The conviction always was a very honest one. It included asking for evidence rather than accepting mystical things and assigning supernatural and paranormal properties to it. Some critical thinking may even help choosing a president who will try to do what he/she promises.

Remember when Bill Clinton lowered his sipper in front of the wrong female? The Republicans thought it was the end of the world. We will see how they react now that their own frontrunner may have done the same thing.

The “moon eclipse show” is in full swing right now!

#68 It should read “zipper”, but maybe there was a “sipper” of some sort involved?

Hey Wingman,

You know when one blogs infrequently these days, it's hard to tell who is who and it's very confusing.

Yes we all had some good times back in the day, perhaps since the war in Iraq has calmed down, it's hard to pick a fight, it's even tough during this election. Bush is giving money away, hard for the progressives to hate him for that. Deepak is rebranding Jesus these days and that will keep him busy until his next book. I'm still waiting on his Mohammed Consciousness book! Ha! Hillary is toast, Obama is the going to be the Dem's guy. McCain is someone who I will support and I think he learned a big lesson this week, it aint always good to cozy up to the MSM and think one will be immune from the enevitable fall from grace. Who will be there for him to help pick up the pieces? Talk radio, the bloggers? Well, he needs them and can't do it all alone, good luck John, get with the program.

It may be Obama's to win it all, but it's many lifetimes between now and November.

Otherwise, I wish IB well, it is what it is.

Cheers,

Steve

Did she cry again?

both evaded the last question on the moment in life that "tested" them.. ...imagine McCain thrashing them on that... she painted nice images of maimed soldiers and made emotional appeals through out... of course voted for Iraq was never a testing time for her...

For all her famed debating skills..right form her college days...she was a lot more evasive on tough questions....Obama had a lot more substance...

Debate Verdict: She failed to achieve her goals...

Obama was presidential. Clinton sounded mean, desperate and angry at times...Edwards would have made a good opponent than Obama to point out her evasive tactics.

Yeah..she said she had a "higher calling" from her "faith" to become the President... reminds you of Bush, no? Tailor made for Texas...never said this in other debates like in in California or speeches in liberal states you see...

The once inevitable front-runner. The once unbeatable candidate. And now she's reduced to saying that no matter what happens she'll be fine?

That was a concession speech. Tonight at 8:43 Central Time, Hillary Clinton conceded the race to Barack Obama. Goliath reached over and shook David's hand.

It's over.

Although Obama won the debate, Hillary's last comment was a strong one and one that can leave an impression on some low info undecideds... Oh, btw the answer -- her "passion" to help the underprivileged -- wasn't original; it was stolen from Edwards.

"it does take one to know another...u reject..."

uh, so you identify yourself more with the label of a "reject" than a "moron"? Sorry for offending your sensibilities of a pride in your low self-esteem.

You low info reject, "early voting" is BIG in Texas, this means anything that shows Obama in bad light or Hillary in better light, via debates, via anything they say, or any recipe for scandals, can have a LARGER impact in which way a good percentage of votes may swing in the make-or-break CLOSE race as of now(which CAN change more lekely towards Obama), in Texas.

I found the BEEF - Obama's Senate Record
by Helenann
Thu Feb 21, 2008 posted at Daily Kos

It has really been bothering me - the charges that Obama is all talk and no action. Those of us who support him and have reviewed his record know there is no basis to this charge, but just to make sure, I went to the Congressional Record (www.thomas.gov) and did a search for bills sponsored or co-sponsored by Senator Obama in his three short years in the US Senate. I searched the 109th and 110th Congresses which cover the years 2005-2007.

In a nut shell I found:

Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 570 bills in the 109th and 110th Congress.

Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become LAW since he joined the Senate in 2005.

Senator Obama has also introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted by the Senate.

His record is in fact quite impressive for a junior Senator from Illinois.

Details .....

* Helenann's diary :: ::

Below I summarize Senator Obama's legislative record in the US Senate.

First I list the bills he sponsored that have become law.

Next I summarize the bills that he has sponsored or cosponsored since he became a US Senator in 2005.

I have only included major pieces of legislation and have not summarized continuing resolutions or naming post offices, for example.

His record suggests several priorities and the bills he supports address many of our most pressing problems.

Most of his legislative effort has been in the area of Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (25 bills), health care (21 bills) and public health (20 bills), consumer protection/labor (14 bills), the needs of Veterans and the Armed Forces (13 bills), Congressional Ethics and Accountability (12 bills), Foreign Policy (10 bills) Voting and Elections (9 bills), Education (7 bills), Hurricane Katrina Relief (6), the Environment (5 bills), Homeland Security (4 bills), and discrimination (4 bills).

Of the 15 bills Senator Obama sponsored or co-sponsored in 2005-7 that became law:

Two addressed foreign policy:
Promote relief, security and democracy in the Congo (2125)
Develop democratic institutions in areas under Palestinian control (2370).

Three addressed public health:
Improve mine safety (2803)
Increased breast cancer funding (597)
Reduce preterm delivery and complications, reduce infant mortality (707).

Two addressed openness and accountability in government:

Two addressed national security
Extend Terrorist Risk Insurance (467)
Amend the Patriot Act (2167)

One addressed the needs of the Armed Forces
Wave passport fees to visit graves, attend memorials/funerals of veterans abroad (1184).

Of the 570 bills Senator Obama introduced into the Senate during the 109th and 110th Congress (Senate Bill numbers are in parentheses), they can be summarized as follows:

Who Won Tonight's Debate? The Answer Is Clear
by RJ Eskow

For the first time in quite a while we saw a clear winner emerge from one of the many Democratic presidential debates. That winner? The Democratic Party. Finally after a dark and long winter came a glimmer of light, a possibility that this party could emerge from its bitter primary season united and uplifted. And the person who deserves the most thanks for that glimmer of possibility is Hillary Clinton.

Not that she got there by the most direct route possible. Before ending on a grace note, Sen. Clinton tried a few pre-rehearsed cheap shots. But it seemed apparent from the start tonight that she was determined, first and foremost, to tone down the harsh rhetoric. That impression was borne out by a post-debate anecdote from panel member John King, who said that she approached Obama before the debate to engage him in some friendly casual conversation.

For most of the debate it seemed as if two Senator Clintons were taking turns on the stage. One, the statesmanlike leader, wanted to rise above petty divisions. The other, the one who thinks that going negative is "the fun part," wanted to keep taking shots. But the night's only boos (that I heard) came when she overplayed her weak "plagiarism" hand and delivered an obviously pre-scripted line about "change you can xerox."

It was like watching behavior modification take place in real-time. She was punished for going negative and rewarded for being uplifting, and you could watch her moving toward the light as the night wore on. As a result, when the debate ended she had the best moment of her entire campaign. That's when she said she was "honored" to be sharing the debate stage with Sen. Obama and spoke about her own motivation for public service, illustrating her remarks with an anecdote about wounded soldiers.

(I'll leave it to the snarky CNN post-debate analysts to point out that she appropriated a line without attribution herself, from Sen. John Edwards -- the notion that "we (the candidates) will be fine, whatever happens.")

Sen. Clinton's only hope for survival lies in sticking with this positive and unifying tone, but even then it will take some extraordinary luck. For, while she had a fine moment at the end, the debate as a whole was a draw. She needed a clear win to change the momentum. And Sen. Obama accomplished something extremely important tonight, too: He presented himself as a convincing president and commander-in-chief. That was the last thing he needed to do to 'close the deal' with a number of voters, and he succeeded.

Still, if Clinton manages to pull off a miracle this will be the moment when it began. And if she doesn't, which is more likely, this will be the moment when she telegraphed the fact that she's not willing to tear the party apart in pursuit of her own ambitions.

Some observers thought she was making a valedictory statement, gracefully acknowledging the inevitability of her own defeat. I think it was more nuanced than that. I think she still hopes for a win, but accepts the possibility of loss and wanted to address either eventuality with more grace and poise.

It made me wonder how her campaign might have gone had she not been given (and accepted) so much bad advice. There were reports this week that Mark Penn wanted her to go even more negative than she has so far. That approach would have been catastrophic tonight. And it made me think of Bill Clinton's advice to John Kerry in 2004, that he come out in favor of those anti-gay state amendments in order to undercut the right. I wonder how many of her greatest mistakes, including her 2002 war vote and her subsequent refusal to acknowledge it was a mistake, came from men like Penn and her husband.

I also wonder how many of her highly counterproductive "street fighter" moves came from Bill or Penn. Those moves have allowed Obama to undercut her with deft jujitsu over and over, as he did tonight, by painting them (and her) as "the old way of doing politics." She's a far stronger candidate when she taps the idealism theme herself instead of belittling it, and when she drops the pre-scripted attack lines to speak about her own dreams and motivations.

(And I felt strongly she should do that as far back as two months ago - even before she opened up emotionally in New Hampshire, which saved her candidacy then.)

But that was the campaign that might have been, not the campaign that was. And when you're running for president of the United States, you're the one who has to take responsibility for any advice you choose to follow.

Can she still turn this race around at this late date and win? It's possible, but it's certainly still a long shot. Either way, by the end of the night she rose above her worst instincts (and/or her some bad advice) to comport herself with class and dignity. In doing that, she did her party -- and herself -- a genuine service.

Hillary Clinton spoke with emotion some prepared lines which drew a lot of applause in the closing words of the debate...

Compare two excerpts:

Clinton, 92: "The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time."

Hillary Clinton, tonight: "You know, the hits I've taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country."

(This is not new: she has been using several themes and images from Bill Clinton Campaign all along...)

~~

Edwards the December 13 debate: What's not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what's at stake is whether America is going to be fine.

Hillary Clinton, tonight: You know, no matter what happens in this contest, I am honored to be here with Barack Obama. I am absolutely honored. You know, whatever happens, we’re going to be fine.”

She said today: "change you can Xerox"...did she come up with the original phrase? Did she credit her "You campaign in poetry but govern in prose." to the actual author?

You know Glass Houses and all...

There's nothing wrong with this practice, and there's nothing wrong with Obama doing it. Most of his speeches are written by himself. They are way more genuine. Politicians borrow lines all the time, because sometimes, someone else simply says something way more eloquently than you can. Uncredited lines in political speeches is not plagiarism, what is not genuine is stealing ideas and themes and rephrasing them. In writer's circles they say, plagiarizing "ideas" in poetry or proses is more sinister than lifting lines and passing them as your own.

Clinton Cmapaign plagiarsim charges is the

Worst. Political. Attack. Ever

#90 Wrong Clinton Quote:

This the relevant part of Clinton comment as related to Edwards's comment:

Clinton: You know, whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people. And that's what this election should be about.

Edwards: What's not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what's at stake is whether America is going to be fine.

"obama will take Texas by at least 7 points...

but he will lose ohio by the same margin...still bad news for over-the-hillary..."

Looking into the crystal ball?...you joker!

Texas goes Obama by 30%, Ohio by 20% points. Now that's some cold market speculation. Watch it, baby. (Obama's ground operations far superior than Hillary. She is short on money, passion in the grass routs, bad management...add to it her stupid campaign strategies and advisers ...she spend 15 million on political consultants last Jan! Obama's organization is organic, path breaking and brilliant...you will see that in Ohio too. While Texas is closed and sealed by the same factors.)
