A Guy in a Speedo

Grace Wilson - March 14, 2008

I was at a hotel in a small town and there was a middle-aged man wearing a Speedo sitting out by the pool with his wife and children. I thought to myself, “Oh, he must be European.” And as I sat in the lounge off the lobby I heard another person say exactly the same thing.

There’s a possibility he could’ve been gay. Only a gay man, a foreigner, or, on rare occasions, a serious competitive swimmer would wear a Speedo in this country – you could bet your life savings on it. Funny, isn’t it?

I remember when I was a kid in the early 1970’s boys still wore Speedos to the local pool. I think it changed in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Who changed the minds of men and women in the US that it was no longer sexy for a man to cover his junk with a little bit of lycra?

Travel guides geared toward Americans warn our men that they will not be allowed in swimming pools in certain countries without a Speedo, as anything else is not considered proper attire. I’d be willing to bet at least 9 out of 10 American dudes still wouldn’t be willing to put one on, not even on vacation.

My friend’s husband is a surfer in California. One of the funniest stories he’s ever told is of the time he invited a guy from work to go surfing with him and some buddies, and the newbie showed up in a Speedo. Hubby had to take the guy aside and explain to him that he couldn’t surf like that and had to go change into shorts. How that guy grew up in this country and didn’t understand the anti-Speedo culture, I can’t imagine. He seriously could’ve gotten a beating out there.

I’m left to wonder if it’s the same situation in any other countries – maybe Australia, too? Or is it just an American anomaly?

hi
I am from India and my 11 year old kid wears speedo infact all the boys his age do wear speedo here...I though it was pretty common..interesting post..deeps adv

Speedo? wossat?
The European Law requires one in my car.(auto)

God bless America, and Oz!

I read your blog not being sure what a speedo is. I thought... maybe it's some kind of tuxedo, lol...

I googled it and found pictures that remind me of Italian beaches (voilá- MY preconcieved notions!) Speedos- no, definitely not in Sweden, at least not during the week when we have summer.

But Grace, why gays? I mean... I must be very dense, but I don't see the connection... and why be beaten for wearing one? And... when you say "his junk", do you mean like in "junk post" or like in "Chinese sailing vessel" (Wikipedia definition- that's what happens when you google words). And what would happen if I sunbathed topless in California the way I can do here if I so please? Beaten, too?

What is wrong with bodies? I mean, with minds...:)

Man hater man hater!!!!!!!

I'm with Aurora "his junk." Well, I never . . .

Uh . . ., what is a "speedo" . . .

Oooo, that is a speedo!$#!

I'll wear the speedo iffin Aurora goes topless, o my, not a good idea, then me speedo breaks, and then "my junk" is hanging out all over (o, getting a little graphic sorry . . .).

Uh, way back when I had me a girl and we wore the same jeans; is that kind of the same thing???

har har har

keeping it lite ya'all

"Baby makes her blue jeans talk": Dr. Hook (click on me name!!)

Craig, I think both Ed and Grace are in a mood for joking, so you're in good company. I felt like joining after a much too serious week.

I must say I'm grateful that sunbathing topless is not producing such commotion here- though I remembered that I heard this news some time ago, that two young girls had insisted to bathe topless in a bathinghouse here and were ordered by the guards to put on "clothes". They went to court, saying that men never cover that part of their body, and sadly, they lost. It's really hilarious, as they could very well go to the closest beach and be topless all they wanted, but not in the bathinghouse... Strange are the ways of society's mind... and funny to look at one's own straaaange ideas.

These are called Cultural shocks and really funny to experience. When people go to different countries and mingle with different culture they experience these kind of situations.

im from southeast asia -- where speedos are the "high class" norm than the exception.

what does a speedo in America mean?

i dont get it. (sheepish sori =( )

Hi from Australia. So I know what speedos are.

Speedos are a brand of swimming costume for men - quite brief.

Over here they've gone out of fashion too, don't know why. Surfwear here is long too - we call them board shorts. I don't think its a beating up offence to wear them here though.

Why gays? Just because this type of swimwear is popular with that group.

LOL grace... so true.. I would have thought of guy as being a foreigner/gay too... I think its a part of the "stereotyping gender" culture of north america... with speedo - guys just wanna make a statement that they're too big for that :P same reason why tight jeans for guys are gay or why you need to have the waist hanging till your thighs.

"no longer sexy for a man to cover his junk "
Grace i am not sure if this is the opinion of women like you on men's private parts( even if it is a American women's slang or whatever, it hurts to see some one calls it J...). Please try to give some respect it is what nature created. I have observed that women who didn't marry or divorced show their frustration or disrespect to men this way.

Jon, Take it easy man Grace meant in lighter not. She is one of the sweetest person.

Grace,
It is all about the way we programmed our mind based on our judgement. It is so difficult to be totally non judgemental( the first spiritual law of success).

Thanks for the explanation about gays and speedos, Evan. Still, I think we people are much too diverse to be put into boxers. I mean boxes :P :)

A women's swim suit is next to her skin, her genitials, her breasts; it is usually form fitting. Why can not a man's swim suit be next to his skin, his genitials? Why the double standard?

I wear a speedo type suit for the support, and because a speedo type suit does not trap air, provide water resistance, or chafe like a boxer type suit.

Why the prejudice against speedos?
