Gotham Chopra - March 27, 2008
My sis announced the formation of her new company today. www.intent.com. She's worked very hard to build the base, aggregated some awesome partners, and has a very unique and great vision.
Blah blah blah....
The truth is a lot of people don't really care and all they'll ever see is that she's the "kid of," knocking up dad's rich friends for some spare quarters to launch some new play pen. The nepotism indictment is one we've both been charged with before so we're used to it. I, for one, have at time been guilty of the crime. Certainly in the past, present, and future, I have dropped Heavy D's name, if and as needed. Certainly when it comes to getting discounts at hotels, spas, and on lap dances, it has come in most helpful.
But seriously, every once in a while, I like to think that I may have accomplished something of my own volition. Certainly the time I was arrested in China, they did not seem to do it to pander to my father. Then again, when the same thing happened in Karachi a few years later, I did drop DC's name and that may have had something to do with my subsequent release - the old "ya'know my dad is friends with Colin Powell..." By the way, you can read about both incidents in my book Familiar Strangers, a publishing contract which is unclear if I earned since I was the "son of" or because of my writing prowess, as on display here. You make the call!
Whatever the case, the nepotism thing never really goes away. Sometime it can be a real pain in the ass and you just grin and bear it. For many years, I tried to manage that delicate balance, you'know embrace the good parts and ignore the bad. I tried to fit the profile, thought of myself as "spiritual" in some Gen Y sort of way. I really wore out the phrase "I don't think of myself as religious but spiritual." Nowadays, I only really invoke the name of God when my favorite sports teams are in need. As for my spiritual instinct, I just try and be as good a guy I can so my son can have something to aspire to. If only one day, they will say about his grandfather, "do you know who his grandson is?"

Is it another spiritual blog? Is it a networking community site? Or must be a commercial website like Chopra.com?

For some reason you always sound more original, sincere, funny and spiritual than your sister. That is of course when you look at things from the context of being a famous Chopra. I also don't think just being a kid of Spirtuality's Elvis should stop you both from carving something unique for yourself. Just do it.
Dear Gotham,
I am touched by your story and by the way you convey your message.
I can relate to you, eventhough from a different situation: I used to be very pretty. Every job I landed, people thought I landed it because of my looks. There was always talk behind my back, rumors of me sleeping with the boss and so on.
I had to work twice as hard to rise above, but I rose above. And I rose above further than if I had not encountered that challenge.
You too can make this work for you and I am not talking about using your father's fame as a door opener for your success, but using your "handicap" as a jumping board to greatness.
Remember that you don't have to prove anything to the world, you just have to prove it to your self. The world reflects you!
My advice from the right, teach what is right and what is wrong, and save your highest praise when your son does something good for himself or society.
Cheers,
Steve
dear Vivian,
I have met you - and you are very beautiful!
dear Steve,
your advice is good
:)

Vivian #5:
You say that you used to be "pretty." True beauty is inside out and as we age as women we can hold this stage in grace. What was once life lived in outer appearances becomes life lived from inner sight and knowing. Such is the gift of aging.
I notice in my older age that I don't get the same looks from men on the street. I rather like being unseen in this way. I am not an object for men's lust. And at the same time/age I find attraction blossoming with men -- and women -- at deeper spiritual levels. This radiation and response chemistry is different with men and women yet both experiences reflect deeper connection of love/agape.

Gotham with all those conections one would think we could implement the restoration of paradise.

Dear Sameer R,
I watched this video with tears in my eyes.
Me, a simple housewife from Holland, has a great memory of Randy Pausch.
Students of his Carnegie Mellon University in stage three have made this beautiful virtual reality animation program called Alice. Yes Alice in Wonderland, with all the animated characters that belong to the story.
I came across this free program in the late nineties.
I made several 3D worlds with it and even won a T-shirt with Alice on it. They were amazed that a 50 some year old woman had so much fun with their program :)
I made a christmas wish for them with Alice in the main part as Agnetha from ABBA and even Randy watched it.
Afterwards I made them a virtual gallery with all the animated (game) worlds stage 3 of 1997 had made with all the pictures of the guys and galls who had been working on the program in that year.
Randy is such a wonderful stimulator of someones creativity, I am forever grateful to him.
Bless his soul,
Mieke
But if I hadn't inherited this dream from my father, I would have never come across it.
And that is something we must never forget:
Daddy's gonna give you a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you just as much as she can
:)
Dear Gotham,
Go, in the footsteps of your father and add your own unique flavour to it :)
Love, Mieke
Well said Mieke--to me, creativity is an inheritance; the imagination a stimulation..a vision--is the dreamstate..the bliss a constant-motion in painting a blank canvass every mili-second in time.. whew! we are powerful beings!!
I have seen your virtual worlds, many with my designs in it as gifts to me.. you are very creative, imaginative; and positive-constructive!
Love,
North
Hi Mieke,
You are right, it is beautiful video. It left tears in my eyes too. I really appreciate his line - "Sorry, I cannot apologize for not being morose".
Love,
Sameer
I see a very refreshing generation gap between you and your father! Refreshing because you have the ability to appeal to a much younger generation in your writings. Your father would never forget to replace the (*ss) with an asterisk and that’s what makes you different... giving you your own unique identity.
I sense you’ve been struggling with the identity thing... don’t torture yourself rather just let your feelings flow as you’ve continuously done and don’t try to be politically correct... that would cause you to lose you uniqueness.
The world doesn’t expect for you to follow in your father’s footsteps and I’m sure your father doesn’t either. Just embrace, accept and love yourself for the man you are inside and the world will respond with that same love and respect even more so... the laws of attraction!
Lily S.
ps ~ i'm also looking forward to seeing your sister's individuality and uniqueness in her site as well.

Enjoy :)
Mieke
cool, I'm open to be inspired and enlightened by anyone! good luck btw!
Oooo Amba brother . . .
you sourpuss (har har)!
And why is that advice from "the right"?
I am suspecting that it is rather rabbinic . . .
But if not, sounds good to me anyway! :)
Peace
Dear Gotham:
Thanks for being yourself in your strengths and your vulnerability.
In my view, every one of us can look at the family we were born into and (whatever the combination of blessings and challenges) examine how that lays down for us the path we walk in life.
Our society, culture, economic circumstances, education and life options (not to mention the whole range of family karmas) all flow from the family/locus into which we are born.
Whatever form of blessing any of us may have, whether it's familial love, good health, abundance, or life opportunity, there are two question: First, what do we do with it? how do we serve with it, pass it forward? Many don't even try whereas you guys (and I would say most of the people on this site) carry the values of service and act on them. That's what counts.
Second, how can we be authentically ourselves when we grow near a giant oak? I've dealt with this as my own Dad was a major heavy lifter. This is the open road of discovery that takes each of us to our own unique place. You are walking that road. Over the next years, we'll be able to look back and see where that road took you.
Of course, as your Dad would say, the destination already exists in some other dimension, and you may sense it. It's not important to even define what you sense but to allow yourself to move forward with open eyes, appreciating the journey.
love,
Alison
I don't know what to say.. On one hand one Chopra (D) is trying to merger with the Whole while on other hand another Chopra (G) is struggling to identify himself separate from the whole. In his case the whole seems to be 'D'.... :)
QandA,
I don't see "D" being the whole, but "G" and "D" being two sides of a coin.
If one is trying to merge anything...one is still seeing 2.
Hey Gotham
It is hard for me to relate to your situation. I come from the opposite side of that coin. My father abandoned me at two and does not communicate with me at all.
I would say be thankful for your father and all the doors that are open to you because of him. I have a feeling you are exposed to many opportunities to choose from.
peace to you
derek
Sit quietly and ponder... maybe... just maybe... it is time for you to take over the empire... so your father can relax and play a little more golf.

Good on ya, mate. That pretty much cuts through the crap.

Possibly there's an embryo... nurturing... developing... growing somewhere beyond the horizons... then they will say... "do you know who his son is"
Here is some news regarding Mallika's startup - http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/27/more-dogooders-on-the-internet-intent-to-focus-on-wellness/
To have made it to TechCrunch is a great achievement.

Sit quietly and ponder... maybe... just maybe..
If I could afford to buy books, I'd buy yours Gautham; because even if it were to be a serious business-type affair; I would anticipate it done with the humourous persona... of Gautham; the son of a Guru, who doesn't want to be known as a Guru. (Like musician GREAT-->Prince, who is not Prince?)but is still a Prince to ME!) giggles
I'll buy your book, if you buy our book.. how's that for trying to best your personal plug.. sans the lap dance victories confession(oh dear, you men will be the death of yourselves)
Peeped Mallika's site, which went to a place which is quite beyond my intelligence(did I just admit that out loud?)and I say that only because.. acceptance IS peace((wink))however bitter a truth it IS.
