Rabbi Lerner - April 24, 2008
Great Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown Endorses and Widens the Framework for a Global Marshall Plan. Now it's time for YOU to get involved. While the media's attention focused on the exchanges of put-downs between Clinton and Obama, or on the papal visit to the U.S., they wildly underplayed a very significant event:
the endorsement of a whole new way of thinking about our global situation, presented by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdoms, Gordon Brown. His vision is so very close to that of the NSP that it deserves close attention and our best efforts to get it widely read.
So here is the key message: the world needs and is ready for the NSP's Strategy of Generosity, and its concrete manifestation in a Global Marshall Plan.
It's not utopian. The Global Marshall Plan is a survival necessity for the 21st century. Please read Prime Minister of U.K. Gordon Brown's speech from April 18, 2008. It's at the Current Thinking section of the home page at www.spiritualprogressives.org.
You may also remember that less than two weeks ago Congressman Keith Ellison introduced House Resolution 1078 to support the Global Marshall Plan, and it was co-sponsored by Congressmen Emmanuel Cleaver and James Moran. Again, this was ignored by the media--symptomatic of the distortions that continually make the print and mainstream electronic media so deeply unreliable. It was an important news story, and an important religion story (the plan, developed by a rabbi, introduced by the first Muslim in Congress, backed by an African American Protestant Congressman from Missouri and a white male Catholic Congressman from Virginia).
If you haven't yet taken the time to read the NSP version of the Global Marshall Plan, do it now. Go to www.tikkun.org and click on the Global Marshall Plan link in the Current Thinking section of the home page.
And then, please take the following steps:
1. Sign the endorsement form (click on the left hand column at www.tikkun.org for the place which says endorse the GMP.
2. Donate to give us funds to build a campaign of support
3. Call or write to your Congressperson and your U.S. Senators and ask to have time to meet with them either in their home office (they'll be there over the Memorial Day weekend, and again sometime this summer) to urge them to add their name as co-sponsor H. Res. 1078 (they can do that by calling Congressman Ellison) or to introduce a similar bill into the Senate. Only a few such calls are needed to get action from most Congressional reps.
4. Let us know what role you might be willing to play in building this campaign for a Global Marshall Plan: e.g. Collecting endorsements from elected officials in your area, or unions, or professional organizations, or political parties, or civic or non-profit or other grassroots organizations; fundraising for the campaign; holding a house party in your apartment or home and inviting people to watch our video about the Global Marshall Plan and then discuss what they could do to get the local city council or State legislature to endorse H.RES. 1078, or what they could do to get their own organizations, churches, synagogues, mosques, professional organizations, etc. to endorse the GMP. Contact: RabbiLerner@Tikkun.org
5. Come to the Network of Spiritual Progressives' Activist Training in Washington, D.C. May 23-26 and learn how to be a public spokesperson for the Global Marshall Plan. Contact Nichola@tikkun.org for more information after reading about it at www.spiritualprogressives.org

Dear Rabbi Lerner,
We (a small advocacy organisation) have participated to this extent:
Focused our attention on poverty in a region of the world in transition, leveraging funds to help people help themselves out of poverty in Russia, advocating for the same to be deployed to an Islamic community in Crimea stressing the point that by deployment of economic 'Smart Bombs' far greater yields may be returned than the equivalent spend on 40 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Over the past 4 years, we've been building a 'Marshall Plan' strategy based on the application of business for social purpose, in line with the 'more than full cost recovery' definition made by Dr Yunus. The paper, having been submitted to both US and Ukraine governments begins now to stimulate local influence, as the UN acknowledges the threat of poverty, both to the country and to the rest of Europe not least in the spread of an HIV epidemic.
This is what the author, my colleague Terry Hallman has stressed from the beginning of his advocacy 5 years prior to 9/11, that leaving people in poverty is a recipe for disaster.
This is a 'Marshall Plan for Ukraine' a template for microeconomic development to be deployed alongside conventional infrastructure development and its cost, in the order of 1.5 billion dollars is comparable to the cost of several days invested in the conflict of Iraq.
We are with you, totally.

Dear Rabbi,
I think the NSP's version of the plan is a good start. Evolution of consciousness is paramount to our success in achieving prosperity and peace for all. Many must let go of the attachment to the old system of things. For example Gordon Brown presides over a developed country where 80%+ of the population suffers from nutritional deficiency, while this benefits the medical industrial complex it is not a sign of evolved consciousness. This is not Gordon Browns fault but it gives one an idea of the challenge and the necessity of an evolution in consciousness and the lack of awareness in a large number of individuals and professional decision making tainted by the desire for artificial profits.
By the way I have spoken to a few people affected by the original Marshall Plan. Many were forced to relocate against their will, having to leave their homes. Not to say it was bad or good which has all to do with perspective. People are not to be treated as cattle and sheep by those that consider themselves elite and force is not the way to control behavior.
One has mapped out executable solutions to all the world's problems, the new system of things, which one might pull together into a concise edition for the short attention spans of the malnourished brains in the developed countries. The systems, industries, professions, and institutions all need to be transformed and redesigned with the new awareness and capabilities. The solutions are not being implemented because I suppose they conflict with the desires and fictions of the status quo. Furthermore it calls into question the real intentions of those that were tasked with solving the problems failed in spite of all the money they have been allocated to do so. Then there is that ego impediment.
If the intentions were real as to solving poverty and malnutrition someone would be on the way to Africa with 15 tons of Amaranth seeds and the simple equipment needed to plant and harvest. Someone would be launching surface soil remineralization projects and building a supply chain. They would be running awareness campaigns on how to boost the immune system and food would be certified for it’s nutritional content and safety. We would be executing a plan to be off oil in seven years and if one does not think it can be done one is not working with the right people.
The plan and the details of it’s execution will indicate the true intention of the planners and their capability of achieving the goals, if it is lacking the people themselves will support an alternate plan that will be presented.
Lastly if anyone is taking bids on ending global poverty, malnutrition, my bid is far less than 100 million. Anyone indicating that it would require more is clueless on how to solve the problems and is probably looking to line their pockets with cash or unwilling to give up various existing profit centers or positions of disproportionate advantage.
The other perspective is this is not what is supposed to happen, because it can’t, rather billions should parish along with their world of fiction, the rich who devised and maintain the current systems from which they benefit being taken out first by the angry hungry mobs, leaving a few having an evolved consciousness to inherit the earth.
I guess we will watch and see how it all plays out, it’s all good, a game the infinite plays.
