Taste for Life - A Feast for All Your Senses

Vikas Khanna - April 06, 2008

Ms. Ketki Parikh, who is on the Board of Directors of Apna Ghar- a domestic violence shelter in Chicago, read an article by Kavita Chhibber on Intentblog and contacted me on June 11th, 2007 to help host a culinary event. I have always loved Chicago and it is amazing to work there with one of my favorite organizations, Apna Ghar

Took us months to plan it out and now on April 17th, 2008 Chicago will be host to an event with Top Chefs and Master Sommelier Alpana Singh to rasie money for Apna Ghar.

Top Chicago Chefs and Celebrity Master Sommelier Unite Behind Leading Domestic Violence Agency to Stop Violence Against Women and Children

Chicago, Illinois – On Thursday, April 17, 2008, from 6 PM – 10 PM, seven hundred people will gather in the sophisticated River East Art Center to celebrate the milestone achievements of one of the leading domestic violence agencies in Chicago – Apna Ghar (Our Home).

Emceed by Anna Davlantes, Weekend Anchor at NBC 5 Chicago, Taste for Life, A Feast for All Your Senses, presents up to twenty of Chicago’s top chefs, coordinated by Honorary Lead Chef Vikas Khanna, along with Master Sommelier Alpana Singh, showcasing some of the finest culinary samplings of food from various regions of the world. High-end wines from across the globe will be featured.

“Domestic violence is the single most preventable social injustice in the world today, with a woman in the United States beaten every seven seconds, said Danial Noorani, President of the Apna Ghar Board of Directors. “This innovative event for Apna Ghar will bring the stark reality of the situation home to us all, while reminding us that hope is still alive.”

This elegant gala will bring together the following restaurants: Aigre Doux, Blue Plate, Cyrano’s Bistrot, Emillio’s Tapas, Entertaining Company, Geja’s Café, DeLaCosta, Lutz Café & Pastry Shop, Toni Marie’s Sweets & Savories, Osteria Via Stato, Tizi Melloul, Volare, Gaylord, Tuscany, Marigold and more.

Alpana Singh, host of WTTW Channel 11’s ‘Check, Please!’ is a keen supporter of Apna Ghar. “This is a cause that is close and personal to me as domestic violence is all too accepted and tolerated.”

Kavita is one of my favorite writers on Intent.
Congratulations on your writings Kavita which have helped a good cause like this

Did you read this story on Polygamy in Texas

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5681283.html

I heard on TV that the women just accept these things as a part of their lives without challenging it .
Men are more prone to rebellingn againt injustice

Shelters and protection sometimes are imperative for women

I have seen my friend suffer at the hands of her husband and having had such a close encounter am all for organisations and their efforts to support these women

Good Job Apna Ghar and Vikas

It is unbelievable that such an event like the polygamy in Texas can take place in todays day and place
