Interspecies 'Semolina' crosses New Line: Where is evidence of benefit? Why ignore adult stem cells?

ATCA - May 20, 2008

Interspecies Hybrid

Dear Friends, we are grateful to the distinguished ATCA contributor, Lord Alton, from the House of Lords, Palace of Westminster for his response to Dr Moore's "Human-Animal Hybrid Experimentation -- The Opportunity for Asymmetric Intervention?"

to the Socratic dialogue "Human-Animal Synthetic Organisms: Asymmetric Threats to Humanity" initiated in March 2008.

Dear DK and Colleagues

Re: Interspecies "Semolina" Crosses a New Line: Where is the evidence of benefit? Why ignore adult stem cells?

I agree with the view expressed on ATCA by Dr Pete Moore that by creating animal human hybrid embryos we are not only crossing species, we are crossing a new line. Throughout the debate [in the Houses of Parliament] there has been repetition of the canard that the use of human embryos has far greater potential for cures than adult stem cells and that without the creation of animal human hybrid embryos we will be unable to make crucial medical breakthroughs. Even if this were ethically acceptable precisely what do they mean by potential? Potential for what? Surely not greater potential for safe and readily available therapies -- at least not based on the evidence so far.

Lord (Robert) Winston has been one of the leading advocates of animal-human hybrid embryos. But he himself candidly acknowledged in Parliament on 15th January this year, "embryonic stem cell research has not produced much clinical benefit." Writing in the journal Nature Medicine back in 2001, he warned that embryonic stem cells "tend to form teratomas" following transplantation and may "show a high incidence of aneuploidy" such that their use in patients "could cause neoplasms." Again in September 2005, Lord Winston addressed the media to warn how the potential benefits of embryonic stem cell research had been oversold, drawing attention to their "remarkable propensity to produce abnormal numbers of chromosomes" and pointing out how abnormal cells could dominate a culture system. Because of these risks, there are still no patient treatments with embryonic stem cells, even though the Geron corporation has vainly promised clinical trials either "this year" or "next year" since at least 2004.

The human mind is curious by nature, it always wants to know what is beyond the known. But the mind is a tool... whose tool? To be used for what?
We need to give direction to the expansive impulse of the human mind if we don't want it to drag us with it aimlessly. Direction is given through a system of values- what is important to us, what is the goal we set for our minds?

As Lord Alton writes- potential for what?
What exactly is our intention with this research? Just to find out if we can bust even this impossibility? Of course we can. We can do anything. More important to know is - what do we WANT to do?

The X-Men are on the way.

I don't mind our species being evolved into some mutant forms, I mean aren't we all mutant forms?

The thing is who decides if the baby will have fins or wings. What if you create a fish person and they grow up their whole life wanting to fly? Will there be operations for that sort of thing?

Folks here may find the Wiki artcile on human-animal hybrid informative.

Chimera (genetics)

How about 'synthetic genome'?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_life

Synthetic biochemical life:

...Researchers involved feel that the creation of true synthetic biochemical life is very close, relatively cheap, and will be easier than getting a man on the Moon was.

On Oct 6, 2007, Craig Venter announced that he is "on the verge" of creating the first ever artificial life form. In an interview with UK's The Guardian newspaper, Venter reported that he has built a synthetic chromosome using chemicals made in a laboratory. The Canadian bioethics group, ETC, has already, only one day later, come out with a statement concerning the development. Their representative, Pat Mooney, in a communication with The Guardian, averred that Venter's "creation" was "a chassis on which you could build almost anything." The chromosome, a single DNA molecule reported to have 381 genes, the minimum necessary to sustain life, was injected into an already living cell. The new single-cell organism is dubbed "Synthia" by ETC. A Venter spokesperson has declined to confirm any breakthrough at the time of this writing.

On January 24, 2008, a United States team reported in Science magazine how it built the entire DNA code of a common bacterium in the laboratory using blocks of genetic material. Dr Hamilton O. Smith, who was part of the Science study, said the team regarded its lab-made genome - a laboratory copy of the DNA used by the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium - as a step towards synthetic, rather than artificial, life. Mycoplasma genitalium is a small parasitic bacterium which lives on the ciliated epithelial cells of the primate genital and respiratory tracts. M. genitalium is the smallest known free-living bacterium. Dr. Smith told BBC News: "We like to distinguish synthetic life from artificial life. With synthetic life, we're re-designing the cell chromosomes; we're not creating a whole new artificial life system."

Hi Aurora,

"-what do we WANT to do?" #1

I just do not know what to think of it. However I do not see any reason why not.

We are the species that investigate everything.

Hopefully we keep the good. And what is the good? I guess that what generally suits us the best.

There is also a little bit of confusion about the outcome of the collision of the Large Hadron Collider in Cern.

A few scientists warn for the fact that the earth might enter a black hole and vanishes.

This is what I have heard and seen on our Dutch television.

Still most of the scientists in Cern are very positive.

Love,

Mieke

You know Mieke, we can investigate the world of the mind for an eternity without finding what we are really searching for. We are not searching for new ways to cure disease, nor for new biological coctails, even if we think we are. We are searching for who we are. If we could understand that, we would use time with the highest intention and we would ultimately stop time alltogether :) I think this is what will happen the moment scientists and the general public REALLY get it.

Well Aurora, in Cern they hope to find the so-called "God" particle, in our country called the "neutralino".

Something like Plancks zero point level.

Perhaps, when they do, this will be the moment that scientists and general public REALLY get it :)

Mieke

Perhaps it will happen when they do ... with a big, mindblowing, bang :D

Mieke, I believe they refer to the Higgs boson as the God particle. It is supposed to give particles their mass. It would be interesting to see what comes out of CERN.

You know Aurora, i have been sitting here for the past five minutes, laughing my heart out.

Thanks!!!

Love, Mieke

#7 Yes, Aurora, and it works both ways. One has to stop time in one's head in order experience its issue. Best of both worlds doesn't work. How human it is to try to shape the material with the material when matter is the shape of our 'highest' intention. As my school report stated, "Could do better!"

Course, I tried to shape my reply to a consensus with you. Did it work? It will if you sort out the intention from it......

Hey D.A.,

Your #2 was hot and steaming! So much so

that I had to check myself after busting out!

You were spot on here and there this morning. Good show!

Hey D.K.!

What's with that belt?

I have to guess she'd hang my scalp there.

And I thought the lizard/Peter Pan/elf-from-another-planet look went out last Fall--never could keep up with fashion.

Scientists are looking in the wrong direction and using only half of their brain. Why don't they ask the shamans and medicine people who are already linked with and relating to other species? Call it Dreamtime, call it astral travel, call it psychic, call it clairvoyance, call it spiritual. Call it whatever...the angle of perception is the same and it's not analytical or linear. Why don't scientists take off their blinders and consult with those who ride these different waves of intelligence?

Half thinking with its dissection and manipulation does not help us evolve...it does the opposite and keeps us looking outside ourselves. Did I hear that Atlantis fell when technical scientists overpowered those who were working with crystal medicine? The latter of which sounds more mystical than scientific.

In my evolution I've come to the awareness that we have a "wing" chakra at our shoulder blades. Wings that give flight. Why aren't scientists exploring this phenomena? Scientists look everywhere but within the human body in its wholeness.

God/dess didn't make junk. Why do humans think they need to improve the human body from the outside? When the mental mind stops to listen new intelligence can emerge. That is a scary proposition for those attached to titles and degrees of self-importance.

Trish~~

hmmm I am so ever grateful for Jill Bolte Taylor's insight from her stroke on the left side of her brain... the thinking, language side of the brain. She explained it is the size of a peanut. All nature is stellar memory... which is the right side of the brain. If you would like to hear her dialogues with Oprah, click my name. love patty

Hello everyone - this is my first time posting a comment on this wonderful mind expanding blog site.
And I want to agree with #2, Derek, yes, we are all mutants of some sort or another. And I also want to agree with #6, Mieke - we are the species that investigates everything. We are indeed terminally curious.
It is 5:42am, here in Central Texas - it is lovely and cool outside right now, but in a few hours we will be experiencing 97 degree heat. Hooray for summer!
I wish all of you a great day.
Ellen from Texas

Well, hello there Ellen from Texas :)

Great that you are dwelling in a lovely country with already summerly weather.

I am Mieke from Holland, a very small country in Europe. We have very nice weather at the moment too, 20C with sunshine and clouds.

I joined this website (Intentblog) some 3 years ago with the learning factor high in my agenda.

I learnt so much already, did some joined projects with people here and am now busy making my own website.

Nice to meet you and greetings from the heartphone :)

Mieke

Hi Ellen from Texas
I am originally from Houston but has lived in Colorado now for close to 18 years. Central Texas is my favorite. I am especially fond of Wimberly just southish from Austin. There is a beautiful river that runs through the town and in some places you can appear to walk on water, if viewed from the right angle.

Hey Mieke
When we can find comfort and even humor in the most serious of places life is more fun. You be careful walking your labyrinth, you just may find yourself giggling at the most inappropriate moment.

Yo Keith
Anytime someone has checked them self because of me, I will consider it a fulfilling day. You know My boat is made of wood and we explore the river together.

laughter is the best medicine

derek

Hey Derek, sweet soul :)

That giggling at the most inappropriate moment was a shared moment from the past with Aurora. It stood right after her message yesterday, yet some other message has become in between and now it misses the clue :)

Hello Rajk,

Yes it is the Higgs boson they refer to as the God particle. It has been described in scientific newspapers here in our country too.

Some female scientists in our country call it the "neutralino". The presence of something like the Higgs boson could very well prove the zero point energy Dr. Avtar Singh is talking about.

Also from translating Harbhajan Singh's book "Self Designed Universe" i have understood that this boson might very well help us along in understanding our universe better and it may be a bridge in uniting the different views (cultural, spiritual, scientific and religious) about it.

Yes it will be very interesting what comes out of Cern!

Love,

Mieke

The fact that the world’s scientists, politicians, and academics, are not even able to eliminate malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies in the developed countries, demonstrates that they are not competent and could possibly lack the integrity to be participating in such an endeavor. Consumer ignorance resulting from a lack of an applied effort to increase their intelligence is also at fault, this creates a vulnerability when the consumers outsource their thinking and analysis to others becoming dependant on third parties for information..

That we have the intelligence and knowledge to eliminative the majority of disease and it is not being applied tells us much about the intentions, with some exceptions of those we look to for health guidance and services. The optimum approach to disease is not the most profitable for the disease industry. This is why I propose that we establish a health industry. The Chinese once had a system where people paid the doctor to keep them healthy; if they got sick the health practitioners did not get paid.

Investors should take note and start to direct investment flows to the new industry. The future is advanced diagnostics and biochemical enhancement in conjunction with physical injury repair.

Rather than spending money on this genetic tampering research and creating unnecessary issues and risks we should be focused on the low profit, non-proprietary natural holistic natural approach to health. This clearly shows that their intent does not have the customer’s benefit as first priority but a priority second to profit.

The same pseudo scientists that would tell the world body that bat ears, with their complex sonar enabling structure were the result of accidental mutation are the ones that would entertain this flawed idea. Or what about the spider’s web spinning apparatus, which from a systems design perspective would have required several hundred random mutations to occur at once. Apparently nature did by accident what man with all his intelligence and intention is not yet able to do on purpose. Some are getting close in some cases, with a lot of struggle, in fact they are trying to duplicate the design of the bats ear it is so good.

Of course nature is perfect genius and the virgin planet a paradise and man with his flawed interpretation of the universe and nature spoiled the paradise. There was and is nothing needing to be fixed that is inherent in nature so one adapts to nature and fits into the grand design, it is not for one to tamper with that which it cannot comprehensively comprehend.

I remember a story from my youth that pigs were the result of a failed genetic experiment by a previous civilization I imagine it is possible since we are now on that threshold unfortunately with ignorance and not wisdom.

As you all may know I am challenging evolutionary theory on several fronts, one being that DNA did not actually evolve but started out whole, capable of producing all forms of life. I do not seem to be able to find evidence that DNA has evolved. The scientists have been looking at the output as having evolved, yet the core self programming architecture has not, which totally alters current perspectives about evolution and raises all sort of new questions.

Or course at the next level we realize that if all things tangible arise from the intangible then the actual source of the form and structure is beyond the direct reach of our instruments and understanding. In fact out instruments are born from that which we would try to measure and an instrument cannot measure itself or the source that generates it’s own existence. We can only see the effects of the processes at the quantum level as is the case with the atom. We have never actually seen an atom and but only detected a grouping of electrons associated with the concept of the atom. This data about the atom being returned by an electron tunneling microscope which requires the “sensor” electrons to jump the gap into the intangible and return the data as fluctuations of energy.

Scientists used the appendix as an example of a useless component that proved an evolution void of intelligence, the appendage having formed by accident without purpose, and used this as an argument against intelligence being involved in evolution. Yet I figured out the purpose for the appendix which the fancy funded entities had been unable to do, although one has now concurred that this may very well be the purpose of this accidental appendage. I suspect this is mostly because I have a different perspective and understanding, not to mention different intentions than most set by profit driven management. It was like the guy that discovered that ulcers were actually being caused by a pathogen which everyone first scoffed at and ridiculed.

In this book I am publishing and as I have mentioned here before I am putting forth the theory that science has discovered consciousness using quantum theory based math and they labeled it virtual particles, virtual particles being intangible. Which goes back to my reframing the argument between the material and spirit as one of whether the tangible gives rise to the intangible or vice versa, the answer most probable being the intangible giving rise to the tangible. Orthodox scientists would have us believe that the tangible gives rise to the intangible. Of course the scientists can also correctly argue we have simply labeled some quantum realm phenomena as spirit, in other words the same thing having different labels with their associated connotations. Different symbology same target.

Also I am not insinuating that some omnipotent linear consciousness being created the universe, more like a superluminal non-linear consciousness of infinite nature, that produces linear consciousness of a finite nature to experience it’s dynamic creation from multiple points of view, which occurs in real time and does not require a timeline of cause and effect of any amount of duration longer than One Planck time. Yet one could not want to rule out extraterrestrial engineering of some sort or that we are actually extraterrestrials doing a galactic social experiment, or perhaps have simply forgot our origin.

The obvious question is if we were engineered by extraterrestrials then what engineered the extraterrestrials? The answer is that because all the processing occurs at an intangible level there is no need for anything other than the math to exist for any state of the universe to be experienced by consciousness. Cause and effect chains do not technically need to have been actualized or experienced; they only need to have been calculated, to produce a resulting effect.

Such that things can exist without being created and things can exist having been created.

Or something like that…

Mieke, I've been laughing with you too :) Though I'm not quite sure if I was laughing or being laughed (at)...

Oh well, it would be nice to meet everyone on Deepak's video blog on his website. It's lots of fun. You can post your answers on Seesmic and show off your brand new gills, arms bearing apples or lizard body parts.

Hi Aurora,

That line of yours #9:

"Perhaps it will happen when they do ... with a big, mindblowing, bang :D"

instantly brought me back to my own experience of it (the mind blowing bang) and the truth that came with it. That was the reason I laughed.

I thought you were reminding me of that :).
But that of course was my very own perception.

Well, after all, every one is a world on ones own. You gave me a good time :)

Again, thanks for that!

I watched those videos at Deepak's site, but me myself am not ready yet for such conversations.

In some things I am ahead of my time (3D virtual worlds), in other things behind. I am already very proud of myself that I am making a website of my own, all by myself. Let's first see that I do manage to bring that online :)

Love,

Mieke

Mieke, of course that was what I was speaking of, and it was funny in the same way to me :) So don't be so sure you're a world on your own - after the "big bang" that's not true anymore.

I'm happy for your website-to-be, though I don't know if I should feel ahead or behind you, as I don't do 3 Ds but do videos :D:D What do you think? How on earth is the mind going to place us in its space-time system now?? which way is ahead and which behind... I'm laughing... mind is funny.

Good luck with the website Mieke, please let us know when it's done!

Hi Aurora,

Thanks and I will let you know :)

I once read in a science fiction book from the sixties of the past century about being immersed in ones own virtual creations and that one could choose whatever adventure to be in. Guess this is what (unconsciously) has influenced me at that time.

Some 3D sites (like Carnegie Mellon university) involve themselves in creating 3D with glasses and helmets.

I am not that advanced (with all those attributes) but have created some 3D virtual worlds, like photo galleries that I can be totally immersed in when moving myself around in it. Like a Roman labyrinth of 25 Life gardens with birds whistling in the background :)

Interactive video like that on Deepak's site is very interesting also, and if that could become interactive with glasses and helmets lol, than it would be like talking to someone in real life.

This will be possible in future, am sure of that, and that is what I mean by being ahead of time.

3D virtual reality will be big business in about 20 years from now I guess.

Me, am just enjoying dabbling around in such possibilities :).

But at the same time I do not forget that being in real Nature is an experience on itself.

Walking and biking in real nature is still something else and still preferred by the majority of people in our part of the world, I guess. And I like it too.

Being ahead of time in my case means that there are very few women in my environment keeping themselves busy with what I have described above.

But in the younger generation this is of course rapidly changing :)

Mieke

Dear Aurora (and every one else who is interested),

It seems that I have received wings the past few days because my website is ready and I successfully managed to upload it today.

It is a website made from scratch, about my experiences of the last five years. I only just now really dare to publish it :)

I would like to share it with people that are interested in the subjects and am open for comments on how to improve it. There is an email address in the Links section of the labyrinth pages.

Here is the link: http://www.heartphone.org

Thank you beforehand very much for your interest in it.

Would like to wish everyone a very nice relaxed weekend.

Mieke
