Ego is founded on its illusory friendliness of the true self or consciousness. After all, it helps us in our evolutionary struggle for survival and/or dominance over others. It helps us accumulate wealth, power, and fame perceived as the successes of the material world.
However, Ego is not a quality of consciousness but a veil that obscures it, like the clouds obscure the vision of the blue skies. Just like a mass is not a quality of energy but a confined energy within space-time boundaries, ego or mind is confined or imprisoned consciousness.
A correct understanding of the universe must vindicate the scientific observations of the universe and not be based on some metaphysics – Samsara, Purusha/Prakruti, heaven, or hell etc. Without a validation against the actual universe observations, it is all subjective opinions or metaphorical interpretations to be taken with a grain of salt. Those interpretations of science, Vedas, scriptures, and spiritual wisdom that are not in unison with the observed universe cannot be universal and are probably incomplete.
The scientific fact is that at the quantum level, a particle has no identity of its own. No one atom can be distinguished individually from among other atoms. At the fundamental level the universe does not have an identifiable or measurable property of its ingredients – IT IS ALL ONE continuum. The ego identity is an aberration and separation from the universal existence at its core. Wisdom of these universal scientific laws is not ego bashing or its singling out as a culprit but dissolving its ignorant and inconsistent metaphysical representations that demean the very spiritual teachings of the Vedas and masters.
The big mistake often made is to identify the entire universe and creation with its material constituents that are visible to our senses– Galaxies, stars, planets, human, animal, plants, and objects etc. The fact is that all these constituents and their knowledge count no more than 4% of the total universe. Rest 96 % is non-matter. The ego identifies only with the 4% of the universe, hence a stumbling block to total awareness of the wholesome reality. At the very best, the friendship of the ego may help us conquer the miniscule 4% of the material universe. Its conquest is 96% defeat in disguise.
Ego is like a spider entangled within its own web of matter (body), time, evolution, and cycles of birth and death. Time and evolution are symptoms of the unconsciousness of matter (4%) only and reflect increasing entropy, chaos, uncertainty, and complexity leading to an ultimate death. Only unconsciousness (body) and ego or mind evolve towards increasing complexity and death. Universal consciousness is eternal and beyond time and evolution. Relying on time and evolution to attain universal consciousness is like relying on a symptom of illness to cure the illness. It is in total defiance of the laws of entropy and evolution (Darwinian) itself.
The objective of transcendental meditation is to transcend or dissolve the mind or ego, whether an ally or friend. Transcendence means no mind no ego; how could a Maharshi support to maintain mind as a friend and still dissolve it to be transcendent?
Our thoughts and intentions (good or bad, moral or immoral) influence only the illusive and temporal (matter/space/time/evolution) universes perceived by the unconsciousness of our minds and egos. The eternal universe or existence exists beautifully at its own free will unaffected by our minds and egos. Only the egoless or choiceless awareness reveals the eternal and unchanging free-willed universal consciousness behind the veil of multiverse of egos and minds. Dissolving ego or mind brings harmony and Oneness or non-duality via ending the fragmentation.
Our minds or egos obscure and fragment the One Universe into many causing disharmony, suffering, complexity of evolution, uncertainty of fate, and ultimate fatal death; who could be bigger enemies than such friends.

Somebody has explained ego in a great way.
A person is sitting on a rock in the middle of a river with her / his feet in river water and paddling her / his feet. The river is flowing from its source (mountain) to its destiny (sea) by its own nature.
If that person says that s/he is making the river water flow by paddling the river, this is her / his ego.
If that person is just enjoying the touch and flow of water, the person has no ego and is enjoying the sweet fruits of nature.
Egoless state is a state of "infinite happiness".
A person should have no ego.
Nature would on its own create such circumstances that any egoless person would create matter, for which s/he has come on this earth to create.
Avatar looks like you are contradicting yourself..
On one hand you say..
"A correct understanding of the universe must vindicate the scientific observations of the universe and not be based on some metaphysics – Samsara, Purusha/Prakruti, heaven, or hell etc. Without a validation against the actual universe observations, it is all subjective opinions or metaphorical interpretations to be taken with a grain of salt."
And on the other hand you said...
"At the very best, the friendship of the ego may help us conquer the miniscule 4% of the material universe. Its conquest is 96% defeat in disguise."
Dear Avtar, I understand that you're trying to bust an illusion, but the paradox of using mind to bust the mind (you are using thoughts and words, aren't you?) is that you end up creating an enemy that doesn't exist :)
I don't really believe in this method- the mind and ego can become too restless and too clinging when "fought against". Whenever I've done that, I've just made the illusion stronger and I've also realized that fighting can only be done by the mind itself. From the perspective of choiceless awareness, mind, ego, material reality are only dreams. Not friends, not foes. Not to be bashed, not to be praised. Evolution is nonexistent from the perspective of eternity, but starting a mind-war about its reality won't clear the fog. Mind exists in its own universe, and its maturation, its quieting down, its rarefiation, are all real and necessary from its own point of view. The relative and absolute realms have their own realities and paradoxically, to be able to make the shift to no mind, the mind needs to mature :))) I know, it's crazy...
You are of course welcome to use your method and I wish you great success...
Dear Aurora,
"You are of course welcome to use your method and I wish you great success.."
With this sentence I wholeheartedly agree. I remember you have your method using Reiki.
I have my own method, using the labyrinth.
I believe that everybody is his/her own coach in life.
Thank you Avtar for explaining your theory once again. At zero level all theories disappear and there is only one choiceless awareness :)
I hope that that is the particle they will find in Cern. Perhaps they do not really find the particle but they hope to prove its presence :). They do not call it the "God" particle for nothing :).
Love, Mieke
P.S. In our country they call it "The Neutralino".
That means it makes things neutral again. Something like choiceless awareness :).
Mieke
Dear Mieke,
the paths to unity are many (some say four, some say infinite), and reason is one of them. Walking a labyrinth is another, the flow of love still another.
Ultimately, there is no path at all. But the joy of walking it is the greatest joy of the universe. Everyone is right, so let's have fun :)
Great :)
Everybody, have a fun weekend!
Mieke
Avatar, Why I find this article "confusing" is because you give us two options...that are both witin the illusion.
If ego is the belief in a separation from God...and this separation does not exist...how could I love it or hate it?
Only if I were one with it...could there be a value I put on it.
It is all about Infinite Play as seen on the movie web site. The Infinite Player plays for the fun of playing (like children often do). The Infinite game does not have winners or losers and it has no end.
The Finite players play to win, and there are winners and losers. The finite players have lost sight of their true infinite nature and are clueless about the infinite game going on all around them. Finite games are not always fun especially when the players get too serious having lost sight of their true infinite nature. Finite games always come to an end as do finite players. Infinite players always live on in the never-ending play…
Finite players create a world of fiction to facilitate their limited play; the infinite players live in a world of truth that allows unlimited play.
The Infinite Player knows their authentic self, the finite player knows only their fictional self. Every being is born an infinite player, yet if their parents are finite players they are soon indoctrinated with the world of fiction and finite play, a fictional self is created which obscures their true authentic self behind illusion. There only hope is to encounter an infinite player (guru or master), that can shed the light that reveals their true identify, the authentic self, and it’s infinite nature. The first step to becoming an infinite player is to become an apprentice, so that one can be taught what they already know but seem to have forgotten.
Infinite players will play finite games, but they know they are just pretending, a sort of make believe, they don’t take them too seriously, and are not attached to outcome, because they know the winners and losers are one in the same.
The finite players play within boundaries, and they create rules, sometimes giving certain players an advantage. The Infinite Players play with boundaries constantly changing them to add new dimension to the infinite play.
The infinite players need no rules, because compassion is inherent in their nature, knowing the players are really one and the same.
During the course of play the finite players often come to dominate the playing field ruining the play, this is when the infinite players step in to destroy the rules of limitation, the fictions and create new boundaries in which to play. The Mayans were infinite players and made calendars to track the cycle of play and changes in the playing field. The next new beginning is Dec 21st 2012 between now and then the infinite players will be taking over the playing field, ending the finite games and the serious fictions that have ruined their play, casting the finite players that do not evolve into the pit.
Infinite players and finite players have one thing in common, they both like a good story, and together they create one.
Hi Richard,
"Infinite players and finite players have one thing in common, they both like a good story, and together they create one."
And so it will always stay a riddle who are those finite and who are those infinite players :)
A paradox one just lives with in love, compassion and understanding.
Love, from the heartphone,
Mieke
Avtar,
Ego connected in light is a different entity than ego dis-connected in light. Ego is needed -- it's our personal package holding matter and personality. It's the connecting threads between matter and light that make the difference. These dancing threads are made of fairy dust and starlight.
Love to you this merry day in May,
Trish~~
"Our minds or egos obscure and fragment the One Universe into many causing disharmony, suffering, complexity of evolution, uncertainty of fate, and ultimate fatal death; who could be bigger enemies than such friends."
And who created the mind/ego, if not the One Universe ?! Good article.
Part 3: ’’Perspective on King’s New Dress’’
The title reveals it all: ‘’ Pain and Suffering – A Holistic Scientific perspective: Part 2 Ego – An Enemy or Friend ?”. For in fact a pain to read as the content is full of inconsistency and suffering the lack of logic. It presents neither Holistic nor Scientific perspective ( as will be proved during the discourse ). To make it worse the author goes as far as to bring rhetoric into the universal aspect, which is beyond psychology of an entirely human-based concept, when posing a question: ‘’Ego - Enemy or Friend ?’’
Let us examine carefully what has been suggested by the author of the current theme, through several of his statements:
‘’Ego is founded on its illusory friendliness of the true self or consciousness. After all, it helps us in our evolutionary struggle for survival and/or dominance over others. It helps us accumulate wealth, power, and fame perceived as the successes of the material world.’’
Apart from an argumentation on the role assigned to Ego in the process of fluctuation in frequency of Consciousness, it is an utter nonsense to give a qualitative measure to the aspect which is responsible for the multitude of phenomena. The enmity together with friendliness are concepts relevant to the immediacy of a temporal condition, yet even on the human level the concepts are mutually interchangeable, according to the levels of perception.
Perhaps the author have been paraphrasing our own use of the word [friend] in reference to the mind, in the Part 1, when we’ve included a couple of quotes; one from 8th CA philosopher Adi Shankra and another from 20th CA guru Swami Muktananda. It is for the reader to decide on the appropriateness and validity of our comments in relation to the given dialogue. We cannot blame the author for inability to read the comments attentively within the context of a particular discussion. Let us go back to the quotes from the current post, by the author:
‘’… Ego is not a quality of consciousness but a veil that obscures it, like the clouds obscure the vision of the blue skies. Just like a mass is not a quality of energy but a confined energy within space-time boundaries, ego or mind is confined or imprisoned consciousness.’’
Ego is one of the forces responsible for diversifying the infinite potential for Self-expression which presents itself as a unique quality of Consciousness, capable of ‘’veiling’’ Itself of its own luminosity. If Ego wasn’t the quality of Consciousness, how could it veil That which cannot be veiled ? The theme of this paradox has been a leitmotif of many ancient and more recent debates between different philosophical schools, not only in India. As for example the exchanges between the vedantists and the tantricas, on the power of Maya and its place in the experience of Absolute, as well as the reasons behind the difficulty of that experience.
That’s where our main criticism of the author’s exposition comes into. The author ‘’accuses’’ ego and mind as the main reasons depriving man of the experience of Unity, when in fact ego and mind are insignificantly less powerful than the energies which constitute the whole scope of what is known as Maya, the real power behind the Grand Illusion.
Ego together with mind belongs to PHYSICAL realm (tattvas), which along with the other 25 (qualities of the material universe) tattvas, goes to make up the world as we known it through the senses, mind and intellect. ( For those who wish to know the whole range of physical tattvas see the dictionary of Indian Philosophy or Wikipedia pages on the subject).
Now the real power, the actual ‘’veil’’, is not the ego but the full spectrum of energies known in Tantra as the 5 kanchukas (coverings), which together form PSYCHICAL tattvas and are the properties/projections of Maya Shakti. Kanchukas are categories of particular limiting quality: (ka`la) temporal limitation; (niyati) spatial limitation; (raga) attachment; (vidya) limited knowledge; and (kala) limited agency. They envelope an individual soul and constitute the limitations imposed upon it.
Everything dawn the evolutionary order is subject to their powers, which means an Entire Creation. The only three energies which are beyond the grip of the Maya are the Eenergies of Will, Knowledge and Action, otherwise known in Vedanta as Sad~Chid~Ananda (Eternal Bliss Consciousness). To equate the tantric vision with that of vedic, we’ll have: Sad is Eternal~Will (the origin of all desires), Chid is Consciousness~Knowledge (the basis of all known), Ananda is Bliss~Action (the original motive behind all actions). They belong to PURE tattvas, the level where the experience of Pure Consciousness is an unobstructed Reality, the level where Consciousness Knows Itself as IT IS. And it is the level all true schools of perennial philosophy see as the aim. What lays beyond that is pointless to talk for it is beyond the scope of experience itself, of any experience what-so-ever.
End of Part 3. (We’ll pose here before examining further the last couple of aspects which we find to be illogical.)

Hi Igor,
“The author ‘’accuses’’ ego and mind as the main reasons depriving man of the experience of Unity, when in fact ego and mind are insignificantly less powerful than the energies which constitute the whole scope of what is known as Maya, the real power behind the Grand Illusion.”
Maya is the grand illusion and it constitutes all of the material world and immaterial worlds of the mind, ego, and consciousness. All the attributes of energy veil the Absolute and all can be considered the limiting factors that hold us back from enlightenment. They all have different levels of power that hold us in their grip, and in order to loosen our grip we need to acknowledge the magnitude of our own personal grand illusion. Otherwise we remain prisoners to our concepts and conditions which we developed in our life. Our personal ego reflected by the mind is the main obstacle because of its control over us through words, while the rest of the illusion (time, space, consciousness and the universe) has no personal agenda.
“What lays beyond that is pointless to talk for it is beyond the scope of experience itself, of any experience what-so-ever.”
If there wasn’t the supreme experience of self-realization you wouldn’t have all this in-depth knowledge from the spiritual texts to quote from. It is beyond any physical experience we have in the world and body, but to realize the truth in seeing Eternity, we call it the ultimate experience that trumps all other experience. ~Kurt~
Hi Mieke, yes some people see walls as obstacles, and some see them as perfect for the game of hide and seek.
Peekaboo.
Igor, sounds logical to me based on the principles of valid inference and demonstration.
When we step past the end of the universe we find ourselves at the beginning, such is the nature of any point on a circle or sphere; it is both the Alpha and Omega.
A sphere without features makes every point indistinguishable.
A sphere has no top or bottom, that is something we assign and exists only in our mind.
For this a mark must be placed on the sphere, at which all the points become distinguishable relative to the mark, and the mark is on the sphere but not of it.
A sphere alone in a void has no size and is both infinitesimal and expansive.
I have no clue as to why I am writing this or what it really means.
Perhaps the Mark is an allegory for Maya.
Hey Richard,
Your last post #18 is right on the money, you must have been in the zone to write that. I know what it means, it was your infinite self speaking and it hit the mark on the head. ~Kurt~
Hi Kurt,
Thank you for responding. I've got the feeling you didn't quite understood my 'expose', in its entirety. For when I've written there is no experience it meant there is no one to witness it. There is no subject left, no object and no experience. I mean this is beyond of the beyond, brother.
I hope you wouldn't argue that ultimately speaking Consciousness, Being, Absolute, Godhead whatever name there may be in the lexicon cannot be reduced to the object.
What we call enlightenment is not different from ignorance as far as the experience is concerned, for in both cases it is not Kurt or Igor or God-knows who is experiencing Bliss of Pure Being. Likewise the experience of the ignorant is not some kind of separate experience unique to the experiencer. The only difference is that there is no identification with anything what so ever.
Rest your case bro, I've rested mine, at least with you. And please don't get me wrong, otherwise Richard was right, a couple of weeks ago, it sounds too much like a divine comedy, when two (supposedly) realized guys keep talking.
See you in Sad~Chid~Ananda

igor
Dear Igor,
We’re probably talking about the same thing but using different words.
It’s God who is seeing (and being) God in self-realization, and in order to communicate this I use the word experience to convey enlightenment. The whole experience of enlightenment changes ones identity to default back to its original position, which is an event for the mind by dissolving the ego and its attachments. An experience here is thus an exposure to an event (English lang. is limiting) that ultimately has a reaction in the body/mind identity upon return, and by gaining knowledge (or recapturing knowledge) of Eternity or God that was latent and covered. The Soul actually “sees” and is “in” the kingdom of heaven, the finale abode, which is the ultimate experience in my book, the part sees the whole and thank God for that part or piece of heaven.
Sorry Igor for making you think and write, but I like talking about spirituality and clearing up false assumptions. It comes easy and natural and I don’t have to research or recall knowledge from books. We will get tangled up from time to time with the limited English words, but with patients and communication we’ll bridge the gap they make. ~Kurt~
Part 4: Continued from # 14
The author of the current post goes on to bring our attention to the validity of the scriptures and spiritual wisdom in its relation to the scientific understanding of our age:
‘’Those interpretations of science, Vedas, scriptures, and spiritual wisdom that are not in unison with the observed universe cannot be universal and are probably incomplete.’’
We find the quoted phrase to be inconsistent with what the author said in the same post:
‘’ …The fact is that all these constituents and their knowledge count no more than 4% of the total universe. Rest 96 % is non-matter…’’.
It is pointless to talk about unison with the ancient wisdom of
The Vedas, if the arbiter of truth is based on the observed universe. The Vedas are the living witness of the science of consciousness which has been uninterrupted discipline for over five millennia by the most modest estimation. While our present culture lead by its scientific establishment doesn’t even recognize the ‘The Science of Consciousness’ as a term worthy of being taught in universities. It is only what happens on the periphery of the science pushes the real progress in that domain.
When it comes to the revealed scriptures you ought to know they came as the result of observation not of the outside phenomena, but as the deepest insight into the matter and way beyond. It is through direct insight into those 96% which the seer is contemplating, in his altered state; peeling off one layer of energy after another, until there is no distinction between the peeled (observed) and the peeler(observer) left. It is precisely from here that that knowledge springs out which nourishes the roots of the world we live in.
To dismiss it or even to undermine its value in today’s condition when there has been a longest draught in our history is not an advanced thinking, but a blind attitude similar of that of the religious clergy of the middle ages.
Finally, the last quotation from the honorable author:
‘’The objective of transcendental meditation is to transcend or dissolve the mind or ego, whether an ally or friend. Transcendence means no mind no ego; how could a Maharshi support to maintain mind as a friend and still dissolve it to be transcendent ?’’
I doubt if the author is familiar with the teaching of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, beyond the popular notions probably received from the questionable sources. There is a wealth of information about Universities and Colleges established by Maharishi, please see the links at the Wikipedia page, as for instance Maharishi University of Management presenting the laws which govern all processes in Universe and thus applicable to any time and any condition humanity may find itself.
Now, you would never find in the teaching presented by Maharishi, mind and ego being the reasons for man’s suffering. Moreover, the transcendence of those two energies would not qualify as Enlightenment either.
In the Science of Consciousness, revived and brought by our Master, the mind has its proper place and in no way a barrier, but an integral part, an instrumentality of Self (Atma), without mind there is no actualization of the experience where Self can project itself onto its own screen. Atma is reflected through the instrumentality of Buddhi (Intellect) and Manas (Mind) back onto itself no matter what is the status of an individual soul, it makes no difference, for the self-referral property of Self is its inherent nature independent of the perception which arises in the limited aspect. Whence in actuality there is no such thing as ignorance and realization.
What is of utmost importance is that Self finds its fullest expression via the agency of Mind supplied to it through the Senses (Indriyas). Knowledge of that brings the full spectrum of creation into its perfect conclusion, that nothing in this world be it animate or inanimate, conscious or unconscious is but an expression of the Self. What enmity are we talking about here ?
This has been shared in good faith, knowing well that though those who consider themselves to be realized or enlightened on the subject will not derive anything new for themselves, yet it is for the others, who have the humility to recognize that there is always something to learn, we humbly present our efforts.
With Love and Bliss

Where would this thread be without the seasoning of ego? I feel it's the artist in you Igor that stimulates me the most to understand what ever crosses my mind and without schism.
I go now to plant runner beans in my garden and watch them unfold or not.
Ed, if the runner beans unfold they will be manifesting what is there in their ego, if not then they would have transcended their ego, most probably listening to Avtar Singh that 'that' is their enemy.
I will accept you 100% accceptng anybody 100% lol.
;}
You are full of beans Ed !
It is the sense of humor with which the Self throws back at my Self its own joke, that appeals to me in you.
Harb !
I loved those pages on Rumi and the thread thereafter lead by you, DK and Mieke. I'd love to go back to that theme, at some point or at least to share with you the thoughts of the sufi path, which since I came back to Uzbekistan took a somewhat new dimension.
Yet for now I've got my own fish to fry.

On Intellectualization...
"The course of every intellectual, if he pursues his journey long and unflinchingly enough, ends in the obvious, from which the nonintellectuals have never stirred." Aldous Huxley
Igor, thank you. Yes, everything at its own time...
By the way, visited your website. You have quite a battle-tested body lol. Of course, mind and soul are no less but of those I already knew. Also, like the name of your town Ujbekistan, in fact also like names of many other places in Russia as well since in the young days we used to read Anthony Chekhov and Gorky among others and so feel quite familiar with them.
All the best, Harb
President Avtar names Ego as New Al Quida
'You are either with ego, or against ego', he said, while pushing his theory of Holistic Relativity (which eluded Einstein.)
'Ego can run, but it can't hide', he said,
'Only I know what ego is and where it is hiding, and soon, very soon, it will be captured and brought to justice'.
'Until that day, Threat Alert is High-Red. Do not
trust yourself. Always defer to me and my crack
team of ego-hunters.'
'And never mind the rumors that because ego is
a false self, that it does not really exist. After all, false is false, so off we go to hunt and destroy what is false. This is not a false alarm!'
John
Do you wear falsies?
If so, why?
"The course of every intellectual, if he pursues his journey long and unflinchingly enough, ends in the obvious, from which the nonintellectuals have never stirred." Aldous Huxley
It is like saying the old man finally ends in the same state from which a newly born baby has never stirred.
Harbie, Uzbekistan is not a town. It is officially the Republic of Uzbekistan. It is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia, formerly part of the Soviet Union. It shares borders with Kazakhstan to the west and to the north, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the east, and Afghanistan and Turkmenistan to the south.
John, enjoyed your sense of humor.
Now where you will fit this 4%, 96% thing??
Thank you John, I knew something was amiss, but I let it go rather than make the search thinking that Igor will understand. Nevertheess thanks again.
Liked the way you addressed me, Harbie!
My best advice is to treat the word 'ego' as a bit of jargon.
As we may already know, 'jargon' is the special vocabulary use by specialists, and as such, is likely to be misused by non-experts.
In fact, it is my observation that if one never, ever uses the word 'ego', one will be far better for such a 'practice'.
From my point of view of years of observation offline and online, the word 'ego' is one of the most dangerous words that can be used in text, speech and thought.
Use of the word 'ego' is what is called, in linguistics, a 'wastebasket term'. It was not always this way, but thanks to popular misuse, this is now the case.
What is a 'wastebasket' term? It is a word which is like a wastebasket; it is a catchall, a summary, with such broad definition as to be useless, except as a general pointer or category. 'Schizophrenia' is another such word, as is 'idiot' and 'fool'.
More to the point; almost everyone 'thinks' they know, what the word means. But in the 'lingua Franca' or currency of language, 'ego' has no determinate value. It is like a coin which changes value randomly. So it is best to take no stock of it; it is either worthless or valuable, depending exactly on who is speaking of it, and then, who is listening.
The history of the misuse of the word 'ego' became a factor of danger, many years ago, when 'hipsters' (NOT hippies) imported a few Indian 'Gurus' to speak here in the USA. Such 'Beat' poets, writers and social luminaries indulged in such altruistic efforts, imagined that the 'Gurus' would be the 'spiritual guides' for a nation starving for higher truth. Little did they know how wrong they were...
The 'danger' of misuse of the word 'ego' arose to the threat-level of 'RED' when the Indian Gurus, searching for an English word which could be interchanged with the 'Hindi' words for 'false self'(aham: I, false ego, me...?), began using 'ego' as that very descriptor. UNFORTUNATELY, those good-hearted Gurus did not realize that the word 'ego' was ALREADY IN USE in the west, as a term of insult. 'Ego' was used to describe a person who had an unrealistically high estimation of self-worth, as in 'what an egotist!' and so on. All of us are quite familiar with that colloquial use of the word, are we not?
Now why were these first few imported Gurus going on and on about 'false self', using the word 'ego' as a convenience? The answer is this, and it may be hard to take, so be sure you are sitting down as you read this...
'You do not know yourself', was the simple message in the beginning. It was to say, that there is a level of awareness to be attained, and there are means to attain it. And when you attain it, you will look back and realize you were more than a bit blinded by your prior ignorance. It was that simple, in the beginning.
But due to the misuse of the word 'ego', things got out of hand very quickly. Popularized versions of the 'teachings' were soon available, and soon, an entire mythos evolved which was based upon THE MISUSE OF A WORD. And this mythos had grown and amplified and has been trumpeted hither and yon, the latest example of this idiocy being exampled by Echart Tolle (author of Power of Now and New Earth), whose own misuse of 'ego' has spawned an entire generation of newly hatched spiritual morons... as though we did not have enough already!
Again, my best advice is to simply expunge the word 'ego' from your vocabulary, and to carry on with your studies and practices, using only PLAIN SPEAKING instead of jargon.
I have a dare for this community. I can reasonably state that we have here, so many jargon-dependent persons, that no matter what, the word 'ego' will be swatted back and forth like a toxic shuttlecock, to no-one's benefit.
So my dare is this, and it is aimed at you, the reader:
TRY to have conversation here, using only plain words and no jargon.
TRY to converse about your favorite topics, without that shortcut/wastebasket term 'ego'. You could even go so far as to hold yourself responsible for producing complete ideas which actually DESCRIBE what you are trying to say, rather than chop it off with a word which is in fact a signal of universal confusion.
I dare you. Give it a try. The results could be 'enlightening'.
John
You do NOT know what it means because it means "nothing".
Start there...
"Now where you will fit this 4%, 96% thing??"
I am a 100% wysiwyg(What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) kinda guy.
"The fact is that all these constituents and their knowledge count no more than 4% of the total universe. Rest 96 % is non-matter."
Apart from humor, notice that the 96% figure was "discovered" by physicists pursuing the "4% material science". The "knowledge" about the possible existence of Dark Energy and Dark Matter and their quantity and yes, theoretical if not direct observational insights are inferred by material science, which makes it an essential part of the physical/observed universe and belongs to the realm of science, no matter what way Avtar Singh uses it with misleading vividness to bring weight to his arguments.
After 1990, with the findings and popularization of vacuum energy and dark matter by cosmologists and theoretical physicists, this 96% thing is used by some critics of (scientific)materialism in their attempts to keep abreast with science and bring credibility to their arguments. Its like some of the critics of (scientific)materialism in the pre-90's -- they always quote science data as it has the added advantage of bing real and people believe it -- use the example of the atom having 99.99% empty space(vaccum) and the only minuscule part of it is matter...
You can as well fallaciously argue "At the very best, the friendship of the ego may help us conquer the miniscule 0.001% of the material universe. Its conquest is 99.99% defeat in disguise."
Johny, I asked to fit 4%, 100% in President Avtar's dialogue regarding Al Quida...in your post 28...not a serious discourse...
#32 "Liked the way you addressed me, Harbie!"
Johnnie, is either nettling me or flatterning me, Harb ;)
****ie is a term of endearment, with an element of condescension, of course. Id est an egoic pre-cursor, so watch urself!
Ed, yes, I understand...
Harbie = Johnnie

President Avatar added,
'at the very worst, the bombing of the land of ego may lead to a miniscule 4% collateral damage, the latest Intelligence reports show. Its success is an assured 96% victory'
'There will be no going back to the era before Einstein and his discovery of the cosmological constant(Dark Energy), to false comfort of Vedas in a dangerous world.'
'We've had no evidence that Ego was involved with the 96% Dark Energy and Dark Matter.'
'There ought to be limits to Ego. And that limit is less than 4%.'
'One of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Ego with the light of speed.'
'This is an impressive crowd at IB — the scientifically ignorant. Some people call you the spiritually-bent; I call you my base.'
'Our war on ignorance begins with defining the scope of Ego, but it does not end there. It will not end until all material knowledge of scientific reach -- which is 4% of all knowledge -- pertaining to observational universe[but could be infinite in itself] has been found, stopped and defeated.'
'We need an scientific theory(HR) that encourages spirituality.'
'Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of mainstream scientists on Holistic Relativity; malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the Ego, themselves, away from the guilty.'
'Our enemy is Ego -- and every person (including you) and every institution that supports it.'
'The Ego brought us to our knees, but not in the way it intended to. It brought us to our knees and united us all in prayer for our enlightenment and liberation.'
'The world must know that I will not blink in the face of criticism from naysayers -- I love freedom of speech -- and will not tire when it comes to completing the missions set by HR.'
Enjoyed it, John! I may add a couple of more...
'Ego will be brought to justice.'
'Egos wit runs in only 4% of territory but its terror network is throughout the world.
'Pakistan must do more to contain Ego.'
'India and US are partners in their fight against Ego.'
# 17,

# 45 Oops, just realized my wife have been blogging in my absence and didn't sign out, I must have posted under her name.
John, Harb, Ed,
Hi guys, it seems like I've missed all the fun while being at work.
John, # 28 is a cracker, if I were to keep my all time favorite
this would be the one. Sorry Ed, someone else has more beans...
Talking about the # 33, you wouldn't probably believe it, but about a month ago, when the battle against ego was escalating, I was going to submit my own version of the ego-provenance.
I'll elaborate in the next comment in a little while, let me have a drink first.
Harb, don't worry most people in England and the states didn't even know the kind-of-stan (Uzbekistan) existed when I would try to explain the whereabouts of my birth. Well its changing though. But Richard positioned it so well as if he worked in the tourist industry for the Central Asia.
Till later with Love to all

You can remain who you are - or you can change. Your inner nature does not ever need to be at the mercy of any person, event, or suffering.
That is freedom, That is living life to the fullest.
The danger is in staying as you are.
Stop living in a haunted house.
Dear Avtar,
The way that I have interpreted the argument and counter-arguments is this:
I have interpreted references to the Ego Mind to represent man's thought processes without the involvement of the spiritual guidance provided by his feeling nature governed by his Heart Mind.
In ancient Egypt there were two mystery schools; The Left Eye of Horus and The Right Eye of Horus. The Left Eye of Horus focused on teachings centered on the development of mental
acuity and clarity. The Right Eye of Horus focused on teachings centered on the clearing of emotional distortion, allowing the student to fully utilize his passionate, emotional, creative power to its full potential.
The blended teachings resulted in the achievement of Unity Consciousness and living a life of balance, clarity, joy, love and compassion.
There was once a time when Thinking with the Heart (Intuitive Knowledge) and Feeling with the Head (Discernment in Using the Intellect) were valued practices in the establishment of Unity Consciousness. This is an art which has long been abandoned by the vast majority and it has created great problems and abuses of power by intellects completely blind to the need for spiritual guidance.
It is my belief that there is now an Awakening taking place and that there is a growing awareness of the need for Unity Consciousness.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.

Dear Avtar,
The way that I have interpr

John, Harb, Ed,
Hi guys, it seem
To me asking if ego is a friend or an ememy is like asking: Is it colder at night or outside?
