Human-Animal Hybrid Experimentation -- The Opportunity for Asymmetric Intervention?

Combining Animal Eggs with Human DNA

Dear Friends, we are grateful to the distinguished ATCA contributor, Dr Pete Moore, a Science Communicator and Author, for his addition to the Socratic dialogue in this regard.

Dear DK and Colleagues

Re: Human-Animal Hybrid Experimentation -- The Opportunity for Asymmetric Intervention?

In response to your initial ATCA briefing "Human-Animal Synthetic Organisms: Asymmetric Threats to Humanity" of 24th March 2008, while I do not believe that hybrids pose a threat to humanity, generating them will pose an asymmetric threat to conventional society. Some people will welcome the changes that could be triggered, others fear them, but the asymmetric element is that the changes could be forced on the many by the few.

The issue is less about the science and any resulting technology, more about our interpretation of it. Western society was basically founded on the Abrahamic (Jewish, Christian, Islamic) explanation that humans were different and indeed special because God says so. Our status was a given. Around the world other cultures drew similar conclusions. When science started to flourish, many assumed this intellectual and explanatory framework would also provide evidence of this boundary. In many ways, however, that boundary has not materialised.

As it was pointed out in the opening salvo of the ATCA thread, science has not found it easy to define what is genetically human. At least not in a way that established a tight boundary between our species and any other. In fact the more we know about genetics, the less clear the distinction. We share many (may be half) of our genes with other species, and posses genes that don't get switched on, which in other species produce features like long tails. The most prominent explanation for both of these features is that humans have evolved from other species, and so you would expect common inheritance and 'fossil genes'.

Hello DK and Everyone,

I realized reading this blog that there were topics that I would have to be paid in cash, up front, to think about, this being one.

The sentence, "The Opportunity for Asymmetric Intervention?" ..opportunity...yes, a little dab of this, a little dap of that and a little dap of johnny doe....let's see what happens?..:))) hmmmm.

really, I would rather be blissing...but if I were paid...I would dig deep and ponder the OPPORTUNITY....

have a great day ruth....

Humans are the rulers of the earth just like it says in the Bible and no one has been able to disprove this fact, as it has been proven over and over again. We have the intelligence that allows us to manage the largest and most fierce of animals and it has been given to us by God - the Creator.

I think it is ungodly to mess with our DNA and combine it with animals as the human will be de-evolving, which goes against nature. However, the animal will be evolving into something that it is not and will be cursed as an animal in its own kingdom.

I read somewhere in the Bible (I think B?) that if man eats an animal, the animal becomes man, which is good. But if an animal eats a man hoping to become man, it is cursed.

Regardless, I think there might be some unseen rules of nature by God, that cannot or should not be crossed. And I suppose we are going to find out what that law is and what happens if that law really does exist, and whether or not it is not meant to be broken.

I'm seeing the god Pan and/or Baphomet

Playing with DNA in this manner is dark and ignorant. That's my 2 cents.

PS: One could look at it in the manner that we are all made up of dirt and the same stuff of the earth and a Great Force manages it all, which is what keeps it organized and as is. This is what makes us all animals physically. However the Force is what also makes us part of it as it chooses, such as spirit, as well as soul. This is our folly if we think we can play in this manner.

I think we are also abusing the animal kingdom when we try to destroy its purpose that is imprinted within its DNA. Same as with us, i.e., folly.

So I think it's obvious that I am 100% against messing with mankind's DNA, especially uniting a human with a so-called animal as we perceive it.
