The New Evangelicalism: "Not to Attack or Exclude"

Deepak Chopra - May 13, 2008

An article in the Washington Post in response to their question:
Some Christian leaders issued “An Evangelical Manifesto” last week to depoliticize the term ‘evangelical.’ “We evangelicals are defined theologically, and not politically, socially or culturally,” they said. In your mind, what is the definition of an evangelical? The New Evangelicalism: "Not to Attack or Exclude"

Ironic isn't it that I just wrote this

"Do not reject, exclude, or persecute; embrace and transform"

Here on Intent Blog 5 days ago in a response to Grace.

Unless they somehow evolve and embrace the new consciousness, which wouldn't leave much, they will just dwindle to be one of the many fringe groups.

People are becoming to savvy to fall for the old fictions.

Here is another bit from February 17 2008 in response to Kavita's "The War on Terror is Not a Religious War"

"They do not attack, reject or resist, they embrace and transform, and it is they that I AM supporting with access to a vast infinite intelligence." ~Self

Must be a theme rising in our consciousness.

There was also

"As for religion.
Things that do not evolve out live their divine purpose and soon die."~Self

Here is the whole piece. Perhaps pertinent.

Kavita,

Thanks for presenting the issue.

Well there is no need for a war on anything. This is one of the machinations of the egoic mind the “war on everything” undesired and amounts to aggravating the condition because it creates resistance to embracing the request for solution and honoring it. So rather than providing a holistic solution one responds to the illusion, but not the reality of the true cause behind it, which is separation.

The turbulence of the Middle East is more the result of a few men trying to retain their power. Men seriously lacking the nurturing love of the feminine as a result of their suppressing it because some see it as a threat to being strong and allowing the use of force.

Love and nurturing is seen as a weakness. The proper use of force is only to protect life not to destroy it, a defense that seeks to transform an active lethal force, not an imaginary one.

A defense designed to drain the attacker of it’s aggressive energy, while effort is made to eliminate the fear and fictions in the mind of the enemy that cause them to see one as a threat.

So from now on we will remove "War On" from our vocabulary and replace it with "The effort to actualize" a “stated intention” with “summary and detail provided”, always in alignment with divine intention which is simply the expansion and support of life and it's evolution; the divine existing at least in concept if not as an actual entity.

We remember from Infinite Play the wisdom that Illusion has no detail or foundation and can be dissolved with the “power of the question.” or the act of looking for the detail which will not be found for there is none and this is the difference between truth and fiction. Truth has a foundation supported by well formed math.

The last great battle will be fought in the mind of each individual, choosing between fiction or truth to act upon; with the resulting reality being the sum of individual choice creating our collective choice. ~Infinite Play the Movie

The statement of effort being that of a shared intention, the highest intention is prosperity and abundance for all, achieved not through force but through wisdom and gravity.

Let them gravitate to right action rewarded by a beautiful experience. Let there be transparency and openness so none are led to temptation.

The worlds religious books are simply stories passed down to convey wisdom and insight, that is all they are and they contain a good amount of it. All divinely inspired as is any act that is congruent with divine intention and the preserving and expansion of life.

Much of the Religious material has been distorted by interpretation and framing from an egoic perspective. Both Mohammad and Jesus had the very same intentions, saw the same enemy and used many words to refer to it. The Ego, the isolated separate self and it’s propensity for fiction and ignorance, all the result of lacking wisdom.

The goal of both Mohammad and Jesus was to establish a jointed, connected, integrated self so that all was part of a unified body, and each cell nurtured and loved, and each cell providing service to the body. Each cell being equal to all other cells, each cell being fed in proportion to the value of the cell's contribution to the body, the heart cells, spine and brain get more sustenance and protection because their contribution is most essential to the body as a whole; yet no other cells are left wanting because of this!

Both Mohammad and Jesus demonstrated that there was an all pervading intelligence operating behind all manifestation, one that was benevolent and just, a guardian of life and the impetus for evolution; an eternal essence that connected all living being.

An infinite being that is the source of all finite being.

They do not attack, reject or resist, they embrace and transform, and it is they that I AM supporting with access to a vast infinite intelligence.

and these words are from The Source.

------The End------

Any "Manifesto" sounds great on paper, even the Soviet Constitution.

We know the outcome of most if not all manifestos.

But of course around here, it's the pretty words and well meaning intentions that count.

Outcome is remotely secondary.

Welcome to the world of empty promises.

Btw, will the new evangelicalism, whose motto is "Not to Attack or Exclude, include the current "Right Wing Christians"?

Since the new breed may not have much patience for the old Christian guard, what will happen to these poor souls? I fear the return of the lions!!

Steve

Greetings from the Bible Belt,

I'm going to step carefully here since I know many who fit the classic definition of 'evangelical'. I'm not fond of broad brush strokes and this is one term that causes people to run for the hills or froth at the mouth.

Most 'evangelicals' I know are sincere people who truly want to serve God. They tend their families and their jobs and are good neighbors. They volunteer occasionally at soup kitchens and homeless shelters and raise money so the Good News can be spread abroad.

But as with every religious group, you have a core that takes their faith to a level others consider fanaticism. This is the group that preaches everywhere they go: to coworkers, to people in line at the grocery store, to strangers at social gatherings, etc. They believe this is a lost and dying world and they are shining God's light through the Gospel message. They are committed to what they think is God's plan and while their methodology is often irritating, I don't think you can fault their sincerity.

Too often all evangelicals are lumped in with the radical extremists like Falwell and Robertson and the PTL Club. (You also have the Phelps group in Topeka but they aren't so much about God as they are self-promotion. Per the discussion of evil, are such groups truly 'evil' or simply God's way of using a stick to prod others to positive action?) I face the same problem in trying to teach blue collar rednecks that all Muslims are not terrorists but simply people going about their daily lives the same way they are. Sigh.

It's all about planting seeds -- and staying out of the bushes on prom night :)

Dear Dr. Chopra,

I would like to comment on some of your statements. One being - "Was there ever a time when the faith was pure?" and one being - "What is being taught today is more aggressive, narrow-minded, and unloving that pure Christianity taught by Jesus".

First of all, what Jesus taught was not actually Christianity. He taught reverence for the natural Laws of the Creator. He taught Soul Wisdom which was primarily the compassion for all mankind. He honored the Goddess qualities of wisdom of the soul and tried to restore its proper place in the balance of order.

From its inception, Christianity was formed and orchestrated by its founders to represent the agendas of the church hierarchy.

Jesus exemplified a Higher Consciousness. He knew that all mankind could access it as well. He said, "The light of the body is the Eye". The eye He referred to was the spiritual eye which allows connectivity to the world of spirit. He spoke truths which were misinterpreted by those of a lower consciousness.

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

Dear Dr. Chopra,

I would like to add something to my previous comment. I would like to add another reference to the "Single Eye" by Jesus. In Matthew 6:22, the quotation is, "If therefore YOUR EYE BE SINGLE, your whole body shall be full of light".

In the wisdom schools of times past there was recognition of the constituents of the physical body as avenues to higher awareness. The chakras of the body were recognized as connections to different levels of the soul. There were disciplines studied which allowed the raising of the electromagnetic body energies to levels which permitted connectivity to spiritual consciousness. The chakra governing spiritual insight is the 6th chakra (located within the pineal gland).

There are references given to this "Eye of the Soul" in the art of all the ancient civiliations. It is seen in Sumer, Babylonia, Egypt, India and elsewhere. There is even representation of it today in the statuary and vestments at the Vatican. There is reference given to this chakra center (Eye of the Soul) in the Bible. "The Mark of the Beast" is a reference to the calcification of the pineal which has resulted in the blockage of mankind's access to spiritual sight.

Most of humanity has lost awareness of this once most valued connection point to the spiritual realm. Of course, there are still very enlightened teachers who have studied and through disciplines of mind and body are still utilizing the "Eye of the Soul" for the good of mankind.

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

"Most of humanity has lost awareness of this once most valued connection point to the spiritual realm"

Boy do I cringe when people speak on behalf of humanity.

I can barely speak for myself let alone 6 billion people

Oh come on Steve, get over yourself! Everytime you post here you're speaking for yourself aren't you? And if you think you're not, then are you speaking for the other 6 billion? Which one is it?

Vivek,

You missed my point. I was commenting on Betsy's statement previous to mine when she made the statement:

"Most of humanity has lost awareness of this once most valued connection point to the spiritual realm"

She was making a statement about humanity, perhaps you should tell Betsy to get over herself next time.

No worries,

Steve

You go, Steve - keep 'em honest!

That was a good analysis by Deepak, perfect for the On Faith section. I have nothing to add to it.

I think that the moderates in all the religions have to become more vocal. If it is true as Lady Lotawana says in comment 5 that the fanatics are a small core of people, then it is up to the mainstream to not let them hijack the public image of their religion.

I think that the new Evangelist manifesto that Deepak is analyzing is just such an attempt by more mainstream protestants to clear their name as Christians.

All the religions have this problem to some degree. In America, Islam in particular faces the challenge of overcoming demonization of their public image.

I look at it this way - if I am on a team, and one of my teammates is acting inappropriately, I consider it the team's responsibility to deal with their own, before the other teams and the officials have to intervene. I have to point out to everyone that this person is behaving inappropriately, that he is not representative of my team with his or her behavior, and that the team members should intervene and handle the issue.

Christianisty and Islam have both failed miserably to do this with their extremists. The result is that the rest of us had to come forward and declare that you guys were behaving inappropriately.

The fallout is that now I don't even trust the moderate Christians. Beyond having the image of the religion smeared, I further don't trust you guys will handle your own internal conflicts.

As Deepak states, we hope the new manifesto is a sincere thing.

But the damage is done. I'll have to wait and see.

Sorry, that's just how it looks to me as a non-affiliated fellow American.

Give me that old time religion, as the song says. I have attended many worship services given by evangelicals. The first one was when I was a teenager in high school and the evangelical leader was Reverend Billy Graham. Sadly, after going forward the first thing that happened was that I was accosted by a servant to demand my contribution to the collection plate. That, along with years of study, taught me the lesson that going forward meant that one was to contribute to a fund! And all the while Jesus had taught his disciples to go without money or shoes.

I won't elabaorate on this any further.. it just goes to prove that the sheep get shorn all the time for their wool, and that is all that most evangelists seem to really want.

However, I do admit to understand crowd psychology, and even the thought that where two or there are gathered in my name, I am there with you. I did feel a sense of presence of some kind, but my poor psyche was wounded by the thought that all I was worth truly to the evangelist was just another buck for the tray!
