Deepak Chopra - June 26, 2008
There's a single book that I reread every year: "I Am That" by Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897-1981). The title is a quotation. In India the goal of enlightenment is to see reality as a whole. When all illusion has fallen away, one looks around and can say, with complete confidence, "I am That, you are That, and all this is That."
What does the word "That" mean? It means the essence of existence. What does the essence of existence mean? There is no adequate definition, and therefore a huge mystification has built up around "That." Nisargadatta
Maharaj, whose name is almost totally unknown in the West, comes as close as possible to putting pure essence into words. In my experience, every reader who has discovered his book considers it magical, and those of us who treasure it feel that it opens a window into eternity, in part because of what Nisargatta says, but much more because of its astonishing ability to change the reader.
The Wikipedia article on Nisargadatta informs us that the 1973 publication of "I Am That" made him world famous. That's a stretch, but the book did rise to the top of required reading in modern Indian spirituality.
The text is made up entirely of transcripts of informal talks given above the tiny shop that Nisargadatta ran in Mumbai. He himself couldn't write, being an uneducated farm boy who moved to the big city. He reached
enlightenment in a remarkable way. As he walked behind his plow in his native village, he reminded himself that he was the essence of Being, not a person with human limitations. Or to be precise, his guru told him "You are That."
It is believed in India that the liberated state, or Moksha, takes hundreds of lifetimes to attain. One supposes, then, that this illiterate farm boy must have prepared a long time for the breakthrough into enlightenment. So
far as we know he never practiced spiritual disciplines. As he put it, his guru told him "You are That," and Nisargadatta believed him.
I won't give away what Nisargadatta talks about in this book -- he is never trivial, however. One is immediately transported into his extraordinary presence. Just as reading one scene of Hamlet is enough to convince you
that Shakespeare is a great writer, reading five pages of Nisargadatta convinces you (if you can be convinced at all) that this untutored man is in touch with deepest wisdom -- he breathes an air more rarefied than ours. He
possesses a quality we struggle to express in English-- absolute knowingness. As simply as Nisargadatta speaks -- simple enough to be understood by a ten-year-old -- the effect upon the reader is powerful
enough to cause deep sympathy and trust, and in some readers there is actual transformation. Every time I reread "I Am That," I close the book convinced that the world would change entirely if everyone in it took
Nisaargadatta's wisdom to heart.

Hello Deepak and Everyone,
Only after the concept "I am" occurs does the idea "I am this" or "I am that" arise. Before this happened "who" was I? ...Nisargadatta
I wonder, wonder, who?....have a great day ruth
There was one book I read when I was about 17 which would be about 28 years ago. Before this book I had covered most of the themes starting at about 11.
Simply called: The Book ...On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are By Alan Watts
That was all it took to understand and my life proceeded to become more and more like a movie, a couple years later had a real awakening when I first worked in film production.
This created a wave, and my mind has been riding that wave and evolving ever since and picking up "seemingly" "other" surfers along the way. With time spent putting much of that new age stuff and the religions to rest while pulling science into the picture.
For example Reincarnation and Karma don't really exist in reality; not that one couldn't experience the phenomena of Reincarnation and Karma; which would be illusionary. Yet there is something regarding an essence which seems to provide some differentiation and “actor” continuity at the death of character. In fact I have always had a memory of where I was before I came here, the last 5 minutes of my last life, but this very well could be part of the illusion and at any rate is nothing more than a memory. I also have this odd feeling that a group of us actually exist somewhere else and are playing out this experience “here”.
When I first got a glimpse of the truth I was terrified of it and would do everything not to think about it. I was sure the world would vanish and I would end up alone in an empty void. So finally I faced it, the only thing I found I could cling to was Love. Well the world did not vanish much to my delight and I plunged back into the illusion.
The next phase or hurdle was to actually speak the truth amongst the "seemingly" "other".
I started doing it online on Compuserve around 94 and Richard Bach who wrote Illusions joined in and there was a lot of playful dialog. From there I went to being able to speak it in public being comfortable with it. I was actually reading through some old dialogs some months ago and noticed an announcement of a Deepak Chopra on Compuserve about this time.
Well back to the illusion it is calling me and I need to take it seriously because the experience is real, working on improving it though and making it more adventurous and spectacular I suspect that if one can awaken all the “seemingly” “other” to realize “really” “same” it will provide for a new and unique experience for all, like perhaps warp drive and traveling amongst the stars and planets, which would be a cool thing to experience. There is so much possibility that awaits us if we can see past the illusion of separation.
There is much more to this “story” to be revealed and lived and I am sure it will keep all entertained.
"I am that" can resonate in every soul, being intellectual or very simple. "Beedie Baba" Nisargadatta Maharaj gave us many pearls. A couple of quotes I love are "What you seek is so near you, that there is no place for a way." and "I am a dream that can wake you up." But Deepak, are you serious you read the book EVERY year? It's quite a big book... :-)
The Infinite Play Creation Story
(A Universe by Default)
Richard Thomas Gerber
Self awareness has got to be the strangest most elusive phenomena in the universe. The creature we call self awareness is so strange that in the new creation model it is produced by nothing. Nothing being a default state and awareness being the complimentary of that self created state called nothing, zero, without attributes, awareness is the opposite of nothing if you will, all outside of time and space of course. If there is nothing by default “something” is automagically “self created” as a contrast to the “Nothing” and that bizarre thing is awareness. From this perspective and state there is no time.
Reality contains nothing and awareness. The state of nothing cannot exist of itself yet does by default so therefore the I AM also exists by default. Actually One is nowhere, something intangible has no place in time and space, hence the coordinates exists at 0,0,0. In the universe of nothing there is what I have called the NULL universe and it is here we find the universal constants and all math and logic. It is the combination of these three things, nothing (the field), awareness, math and logic, together sort of a trinity that allow the universe to unfold in infinite complexity to be experienced.
I have written this here on Intent Blog before, yet I realize many missed the comments I have made. It is in my book coming out shortly and is also covered in Infinite Play the Movie. If any other authors or writers would like to use it please attribute The Source of it’s manifestation.
I thought Ruth that this may answer your query.
seems I left off this part..
This is the first cause preceded by no other tangible cause, therefore outside of the phenomena of tangible (involving the element of time) causality. Though one might attribute this existence to an intangible cause, which is simply found in math eternal, in that for any state to exist it must have a contrast; therefore I AM, always and in all ways thanks to nothing.
I also think he is one of the best teachers. He’s been my inspiration and teacher since the early eighties. What I found out is: all you really need is a sincere determination (or earnestness as he puts it) and his series of books, and you can find That truth. You need not look anywhere else, or go anywhere else, just sit and be That, not this, but That which you already are. Nisarga Yoga goes straight to the heart of the matter without side stepping the issue. He also uses the some of the best words and metaphors to explain That and this, which is getting in are way of seeing That. His direct approach is a breath of fresh air compared to the riddle game that a lot of teachers use. You really don’t need to read any other book on spirituality besides his, and you may never read another. ~Kurt~
What is funny about I AM THAT is that I have held the book open infront of me and read from it but never have I "read" this book as such. I find it almost impossible to read as I only need read two or three pages of it at any one time and I have to surrender to its truth. I can open it at any page and read his words that open the eyes and heart to a truth that is so close to you it is blindingly obvious.
I think it is because of this book that I stopped reading other spiritual books such as the books you yourself have written Deepak. What else is there to understand than what this enlightened being tells us in these pages.
What is equally fascinating about I am That is that if you read through the chapters you will see that he is always giving the same answer to the questions. That is why for me I just need to read one of his replies to a question and thats it I know where he is.
Also Beware of this book as it will totaly destroy all of your beliefs if you are ready for it.
You will have nowhere left to hide after reading it.
LOL

Dear Dr. Chopra,
Here are some of the teachings of Jesus from the "Essene Communions" which seem to me to explain well what THAT is in the "I Am That" that you are speaking of:
This record of the teaching is entitled: "The Gift of Life in the Humble Grass".
And Jesus said, "Happy are you, Sons of Light, for you have entered into the deathless way and you walk in the path of truth, even as did your fathers of old, who were taught by the Great Ones. With the eyes and ears of the spirit do you see and hear the sights and sounds of the kingdom of the Earthly Mother: the blue sky where dwells the angel of Air, the foaming river where flows the angel of Water, and the golden light which streams from the angel of the Sun. AND I TELL YOU TRULY, ALL THESE ARE WITHIN YOU AS WELL AS WITHOUT, FOR YOUR BREATH, YOUR BLOOD, THE FIRE OF LIFE WITHIN YOU, ALL ARE ONE WITH THE EARTHLY MOTHER.
Lo, it is the angel of Wisdom that governs the movements of the planets, the circle of the seasons, and the orderly growth of all living things. So does the angel of Wisdom ordain the communion of the Sons of Light with the Stream of Life, through the tender blades of grass. For I tell you truly, YOUR BODY IS HOLY ,BECAUSE IT BATHES IN THE STREAM OF LIFE, WHICH IS ETERNAL ORDER.
Know also, that the angel of Love is present in the blade of grass, for love is in the giving, and great is the love given to the Sons of Light by the tender blades of grass. For I tell you truly, the Stream of Life runs through every living thing, and ALL THAT LIVES, BATHES IN THE HOLY STREAM OF LIFE. And when the Son of Light touches with love the blades of grass, so do the blades of grass return his love, and lead him to the Stream of Life where he may find life everlasting. And this love never exhausts itself, for its source is in the Stream of Life which flows into the Eternal Sea, and no matter how far does the Son of Man stray from his Earthly Mother and his Heavenly Father, the touch of the blades of grass will always bring a message from the angel of Love; and his feet shall bathe again in the Holy Stream of Life.
When the Sons of Light are one with the Stream of Life, then will the power of the blades of grass guide them to the everlasting kingdom of the Heavenly Father. And you shall know more of the mysteries which is not yet time for you to hear. For there are other Holy Streams in the everlasting kingdoms; I tell you truly, the heavenly kingdoms are crossed and crossed again by streams of golden light, arching far beyond the dome of the sky and having no end. AND THE SONS OF LIGHT SHALL TRAVEL BY THESE STREAMS FOREVER, KNOWING NOT DEATH, GUIDED BY THE ETERNAL LOVE OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER. And I tell you truly, all these mysteries are contained in the humble grass, when you touch it with tenderness and open your heart to the angel of Life within.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.
I was once lost like That, but then they found me like This.
Dr. Chopra:
This is one book that is on my "To do" list. I have glanced through it at a friend's place but havent gotten to buy it.
For me ever since I hit on JK's books and Yoga Vasishtha + Gita - I felt all that I have to know IF I want to experience what is there to be experienced.
Between these three I read any one to get me "aligned". Of course, I am not at the same level of knowledge or intuition as you and some others are.. but I marvel at the level of thought... sheer audacity to be ruthlessly honest.. of those Rishis.
Another person I have found fascinating is Swami Vivekananda. He comes off as a brilliant person (no wonder he was offered to be the first head of what is now the Indian Institute of Science by Jamshetji) but I can't say that he was "profound".
Krishnamurti was the ONLY original thinker since Krishna.. in my view. He gave a totally new paradigm to how all the earlier philosophies need to be looked at. And that is where I find a lot of similarities between him and Vasistha from Yoga Vasistha.. he was another straight talking no-nonsense person. All these three were not prone to PC or niceties on things that would seem nice but were incorrect. They just hit the nail right through.
That is why I get impatient with authors prone to nicety in explaining the profound concepts.
This book will be my buy in the coming months.
Cheers,
Desh
There is Nature, I am Nature, you are Nature, all is Nature, what is profound in this? We first construced philosophies over this simple fact and now are learning to deconstruct them.
Perhaps we are bored by this naked truth and want to add some mystery to it to make it a bit interesting.
Ramana Maharshi once told an interesting story regarding this later.
In a village a person brought up a real lion and then there came a person who brought a monkey who ACTED like a lion. Crowds were going to see the later act like a lion while only a few went to see the real lion.

PS: I hope my this post is not deleted.

I truly enjoyed reading I am That....but don't agree that Maharaj's message was I am that...you are that...and all this is that. I believe his message was I am neither this nor that....you are neither this nor that and nothing is this or that.
From I am That Maharaj says he became enlightened by his guru telling him that he is the supreme reality.
The supreme reality is neither this nor that...it is not one way or another...or both. It IS.
I notice that different people get different things out of a book...It would be interesting to do a online workshop to compare notes.

Hi Deepak,
Happy Summer! "I AM That I AM." I heard this many years ago and it kept repeating itself as I traveled one spiritual path after another. Now days it makes me think of threads that weave from source back to source; back to source from source a two-way flow in a universe of possibility patterns.
Love,
Trish~~
Deepak,
"I Am That I Am" is a phrase that's followed me through different spiritual paths in this lifetime. Today it brings to mind/heart threads weaving from source to source; to source from source. A two-way flow creating myriad patterns in multi-dimensional realm.
