Deepak Chopra - June 10, 2008
An article in the Washington Post On Faith section in response to their question: "Do you believe that faith can effect your health or is that a lot of new age nonsense?"
Faith is too vast a subject to generalize about, -- its effects are indisputably not "New Age nonsense," unless you want to call Jesus nonsense. When he performed healings, he ascribed them to the faith of the one being healed, not to his own miraculous powers. Now that society has shifted its values radically toward materialism, faith healing is a suspect phenomenon. Proof requires an agent one can see -- such as neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and others -- to "explain" how the brain might trigger the immune system.
The minute you ask how mind influences body, you find yourself on the dividing line between secular and religious values. If only it were that simple. It tends to be true that people who hold deep religious beliefs (in the power of prayer, for example) are healthier than the norm, but the same holds true for vegetarians, rural dwellers, and anyone who is relatively free of anxiety, depression, and external stress. So if you are a vegetarian who lives on a farm in Iowa, no one can say that praying every day, once it is added to these other factors, significantly increases your well being. (If you believe in a vindictive, angry God, it might even do the opposite.)
Well-being is subjective, and even though Western medicine largely discounts subjectivity, that in itself is a belief system. If you lose a thousand dollars in the stock market and it happens to be all the money you have, the effects on mind and body will be devastating compared to the same loss suffered by a billionaire. The difference comes down to a subjective feeling of helplessness and insecurity compared to a subjective feeling of security and abundance. Yet we know that throwing money at someone's unhappiness isn't a panacea. Rich persons don't necessarily feel secure -- depression and anxiety are tricky matters, often needing no external causes.
Nor is it easy even to define faith. Belief can be a form of denial, a defense that covers up underlying problems. Faith, as defined by Jesus, is the key to miracles and the Kingdom of God. This implies that faith creates transformation. It allows a person to transcend physical boundaries and step into the unknown (too bad that Lazarus isn't around to give his side of the issue). At the very least faith induces subjective well-being with about as much reliability as pharmaceuticals, minus damaging side effects. Which is not to imply that anyone should place absolute faith in faith.
My own view is that faith is a small part of the enormous field of consciousness. In our drugs-and-surgery society, we don't take enough advantage of non-material approaches. For example, studies in heart disease led by George Vaillant, in the 1950s tried to explain premature heart attacks, then at epidemic levels. Vaillant found a mild correlation between artery disease and high cholesterol levels. This finding changed the course of treatment, ignoring the stronger correlation he found, which didn't fit the materialistic model. Men who faced their psychological problems in their twenties were considerably less likely to have a premature heart attack then men who didn't. And the evidence for the existence of a "cancer personality" has gained credibility through studies that show certain traits, such as suppression of emotion, raise the risk of many diseases (although a specific connection to cancer remains tenuous).
Although the deleterious of stress and its connection to the major epidemics of our time such as heart disease, cancer, and infection have been well documented over several decades, there has been little research on what peace of mind does to our biology. I can see how a sense of "peace that passes understanding", and an internal state of euphoria, could lead to healing. There is more and more evidence that when the mind is at peace and also happy, there are biological consequences. An internal state such as this is more than mere subjective well being. Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, oxytocin, opiates, and serotonin are simultaneously secreted. These neurotransmitters are associated with euphoria, self confidence, and a pleasurable feeling. They also happen to be immunomodulators, in that they fine tune the activity of the immune system and are associated with a return to homeostasis (Homeostasis is a state of dynamic non change in our biology in the midst of a changing environment. Disease is a disruption of homeostasis.) It is, therefore, becoming increasing clear, that the mind and body are inseparably one and that which we call faith is an important component in the phenomenon of healing. It is no accident that the word health, the word healing, and the word holy, all imply a return to the memory of wholeness.

Hi Deepak,
I have mentioned here before that stress produces cortisol which literally shuts down the immune system. Having faith we understand everything happens perfectly, conducive to our evolution, even though we might not always like what happens. If we understand everything happens perfectly then there is nothing to really stress out about. Yet what we are really talking about being an issue is chronic worry and stress. There is a purpose for stress, but it is a very short term phenomena, in that it usually indicates we need to do something, as soon as we do it the stress it gone.
Of course there is an evolutionary benefit to stress killing off people, aggressive conflict creators generate stress in themselves culling the hosts of destructive lower consciousness.
The meek live longer and shall inherit the earth..
So there is a scientific basis for “faith”, not dogma defined as faith or a belief system, but faith as defined below, which does not require belief, only knowing, and this faith is conducive to good health because we don’t have the same degree of stress that we do when we think we are a disconnected entity competing with everything else in the world to survive.
I wrote this here in response to that last Intent Blog question the other day:
Faith as defined in Infinite Play, and as I have postulated here:
The knowing through direct experience (experiment and observation) as well as the measurement of statistically significant phenomenal event anomalies using mathematical probability and improbability analysis, that indicate the existence of an all pervading (benevolent) intelligence. An intelligence operating from the Supreme Evolutionary principle as it’s impetus that is working behind the scenes connecting and blending individual intentions resulting in the formulation of a collective intention for which the mechanisms of fulfillment are orchestrated and facilitated.
The secular (non-religious) are not necessarily opposed to faith depending on how “faith” is defined.
The non-religious can be very spiritual as defined in Infinite Play as giving credence to the intangible as primary and the tangible as secondary. Rather that the false appearance of the tangible giving rise to the intangible.
There is a direct correlation between medical industry profits and levels of stress. In fact knowing this one can increase medical industry revenues by increasing stress levels in the general population. In other words one can shut down the general population’s immune system, producing the disease profit center by stimulating fear in their minds and creating a system where there is scarcity (think money supply).
The best agent for this is the media, so the next question is how can one get the media to participate? By purchasing commercial air time from the media and enlisting them to perpetuate the story that the natural world and your body is imperfect needing to be fixed.
What is imperfect is the minds of men.
Hopefully the general population will soon come to the realization that you are being hosed by about 10,000 people living like kings because of your ignorance, lack of unity, inability to question, wield a discerning mind, and failure as a result of being to lazy to self educate. So we can’t really blame the 10,000, that have duped the world, one must choose to be their victim, if one searches for the truth it is out there, it is not a secret.
The reason I bring this up is the amount excessive taxes I have to pay as a result of the world’s collective fictions and ignorance.
The selling point and benefit of enlightenment and awareness is lower taxes, less labor, more fun and good health.
So if 100 of you cut and paste this and send it to all your friends it will lower your taxes. If thirty journalists write about it all the faster…
So the reality is one does not need to put much effort forth to lower your taxes.
I did my part and will have no problem sleeping tonight like some will in which case they might reach for that prescription...
Jesus wept. Lazarus, what happened?
Faith is and will become increasingly important.
For example having faith in what I am saying now, simply based on what I had written 2 – 7 years ago or more has all happened.
Many of the fictions that snag our attention today will become irrelevant.
Some rivers will be 2 - 3 miles wide within perhaps two years, so plan now, have faith in what I say.
Reminds us of the Noah’s Ark story, no one listened to the divine because of ego and they were swept away, naturally. It tries to help.
I actually know how to engineer solutions so we can all adapt … doesn’t look like it is going to happen though, more and more I am thinking it is not supposed to be that way.
More important than knowing the solutions is knowing how to dissolve the ego impediments that block their rapid implementation, for example on the floors of congress.
One way to gauge a correction in the collective attention would be the American Idol ratings would drop. Funny isn’t it worshipping false Idols (fictions), I think they call it Idolatry. I am not really saying American Idol is bad, our collective priority is simply not one based on wisdom.
Some rivers will be 2 - 3 miles wide within perhaps two years, so plan now, have faith in what I say. This is based on the new volumes of water they must carry.
Do you think the current dams will hold? What does it mean when they are gone?
I think it might be time for me to change course like the rivers..
Faith is belief PLUS action. We all have beliefs and are consistingly acting upon them...from the setting the alarm clock to brushing our teeth. I think the goal is not to rid beliefs...but to identify them and work with them until they disolve in understanding.
To say that healing occures only through the belief system of the one being healed...is not quite true...or better said not the only way healing can occure.
Who is the appearance of illness, disease, poverty, relationship problems and so on...appearing to?
I have noticed by simply bringing "roblems" to my attention the problems healed. These people did not consciously believe I am a healer.
I was the observer...not of my power (I have none) but of the God's power.
In the face of an appearance do we take thought? Jesus said take no thought...do not judge according to an appearance. Compassion builds the bridge.
Each person is born with a different set of attributes depending on the different combination of solids, chemicals, oxygen and water. When they are mixed together along with the physical and mental debris acquired in life a current of energy results as your personal signature. This current radiates continually, with a comparable but subtle form of energy that permeates through physical borders. A stable, strong and pure current radiates a refined energy that can heal, if one has an exceptional mixture, and a talent for sharing it. Friction between the stillness of Awareness and particle movement radiates a subtle and pure form of energy close to the source, which is usually diluted or used up by the mind and impurities. This is a real pure and subtle energy that seeps out, and if it doesn’t meet with resistance through impurities and dissipate with distance, it can connect with the same current deep within another. Then the frequencies find a match, and through this common connection an enhanced field develops in the receiver, and it takes what it needs from the healer. Thus, the pure current reconnects short circuited areas that were damaged in the body and lacking connection creating internal disharmony. The higher the degree of maturity with self-realization puts you in a better position to understand, manipulate, intensify, purify or calm the current. Because then your perception is before energy, which allows you to observe it naturally in a daily awareness, and work with it, keeping it strong and in balance by not interfering with it. Otherwise, it would have to happen suddenly, unexpected and uncontrollable for the gifted few who were born with the unique ability. Christ was extremely spiritual and gifted with the ability to manufacture a lot of pure energy close to the source, and distribute it with ease. This is rare and improbable, and self healings are more likely to happen as we see from time to time. This happens when a personal surrendering occurs at the opportune moment, and it releases restrictions or obstacles, and the body gets a jumpstart from the release of pure energy within. The person just totally and completely gives up to the forces that be and excepts their fate, because trying to understand it, and fight it eventually becomes a hopeless option. People who heal themselves might think an outside force or healer was responsible when in fact it was there own faith in the unknown that has healed them. There is that detached feeling that can confuse one enough to think of a supernatural cause. The characteristics of releasing to the witness and then to the unknown can feel unusual, impersonal and distant.
Really this life force, body and mind are your only guaranteed capitol that comes with the journey, and maintaining it properly allows you to perform better in life. You can’t give what you don’t have, meaning if your life is unstable, out of balance and busy, your current isn’t going to help anyone. A purified current can be directed with a lot of practice, but it drains the body and can cause problems unless one understands how it works. This is why healings are so rare because everyone is so busy using up and polluting their personal stock, and it depends on the quality and quantity of that stock. The stable healer should always be working on purifying, enhancing, conserving and directing the energy to the hands in a constant state of refinement. The mind plays a big part in diluting the current with negativity, emotions, beliefs, stress, and with the inability to remain mentally still it squanders all the available resources. ~Kurt~

Dear Dr. Chopra,
Yes, faith is definitely a necessity for having good health. However, I believe that Faith should be re-inforced by Knowledge of the Order of Laws of Creation. When we are aware of how to work with Creational Laws and to facilitate them, instead of opposing them, we are able to realize the harmony in mind and body that enables healing to occur.
I would like to share some relevant information regarding healing:
The Human Energy Field is always receiving energy from the universe. This energy sustains your entire existence: body, mind, and emotions.
Your AURA is the energetic skin which holds all your inner energy bodies and outer body together. Your energy CHAKRAS are like the pores in the energy skin which regulate the flow of universal energy into and out of the body.
Your energy field is the instrument of wellness and the source of illness. Your AURA is the holographic, energy matrix for your physical (matter) body. The vital life force (living energy field) is variously referred to as : chi (China), ki (Japan), manna (Hawaii), and prana (India).
Our bodies are a balance of six flowing fluid layers and strong grid structures:
1) Physical, 2) Astral (emotion), 3) Causal (karma), 4) Mental (thought), 5) Etheric (intuition), and 6) Soul.
For anyone who wishes to explore more information on this subject there is a site entitled: Past Forward Cure: Understanding and Healing the Human Energy Field.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.

Are you still going to continue doing your Video Posts?
I have not seen one in a while now (Even though time is an Illusion and you don't need to be on a screen to be in my heart)
But I like to see your face and hear your voice anyway.
Funny that because most of what you say I don't take much notice of as I know it a billion times over anyway. But I could look at you and just listen to you for a very long time. I couldn't really describe it other than I recognise something very deep when I wittness you. Similar to a waterfall or something that you don't quite fully know why it is appealing but it just is.

there are problems when kids don't have faith in parents n parents has no faith in family.
Faith is imp and I have faith in u.
Read this following interesting conversation
--------------------------------------------
Gandhiji said that the greatest lessons in life are learnt from children, not from learned men. A child will fearlessly try before giving up.
Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Prof: Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is
this God good then? Hmm?
(Student is silent.)
Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Prof: So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)
Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Prof: So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)
Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.
Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn't. (The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?
Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?
(The class is in uproar.)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)
Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.
Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
prof: is there anything else within the body apart form the main parts like Brain, Lungs heart n kidnys which keeps us alive.
Student: Soul!! Soul is there, sir.
Prof: Did you felt soul , touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so.
Student: soul keeps us alive. You may save the hart-attacked person by the shock treatment, but why we can't save a person using shock treatment who had natural death. thats why soul exists but we don't realize the existance.
prof: (Similed with bit anger) if soul is so responsible then there is no need of brain and heart.
Student: if brain n heart is everything then why we fail to provide life to the dead man.
prof: (now lost more control) Ok.. for a moment I believe that there is something like soul, tell me how comes the soul?
student: that is it sir, your question itself an answer
Prof: (with louder n irritated voice) I feel rather believe that you are deliberately weaving into the web of words and concepts.
Student: Can I say something for last time
Prof: Ok..
sutdent: did U saw any thread, material, chemical, particle or any thing or object using which I weaved the web to trap you
Prof: this is stupid question, I will not answer
Class: roared in chorous, "Sir, you must have to answer!!"
prof: (felt quite dominated) ok..... I felt the web, Happy u r?
Student: It does mean that you felt the web?
prof:( this time bluntely) yes, and I will not repeat it again
Student: That is it sir... The 2nd link between man & god is BELIEF.
if you have faith n belief then you can fell n see anything no matter wheather it is a god or a web. Faith develop beliefs, Belifs develops trust. I believe n trust that god is there. Sir, Do U?
Class: clapped suddenly after pause of a few seconds and professor leftout angrly

From Snopes.com:
Glurge (a term which can be used to describe one story or applied to the genre as a whole) is the body of inspirational tales which conceal much darker meanings than the uplifting moral lessons they purport to offer, and which undermine their messages by fabricating and distorting historical fact in the guise of offering "true stories." Glurge often contains such heart-tugging elements as sad-eyed puppies, sweet-faced children, angels, dying mothers, or miraculous rescues brought about by prayer. These stories are meant to be parables for modern times but fall far short of the mark.
Great blog, Deepak-- I notice that when the word faith is used, it near instantly evokes several typical responses in which people get so triggered that they are unable to actually hear the point made.
First is the assumption that you are making claims for exclusionary narrow minded religions that have caused great divisiveness and harm to people. Having heard you speak on many occasions and read your books, I know that you are not a proponent of such religions. But people are unable to distinguish the pervasive phenomena you describe from their experiences of the harm caused by such religions. There are universal phenomena these religions attempt ineffectively to capture. SO you are pointing at those phenomena, and initiating a grounded discussion about them.
The second issue is that many people have been conditioned by their education and group loyalties to believe that the only thing that we can characterize as "real" is something that can be measured and quantified via material phenomena. The current research models are outstanding for what they measure-- but what about what they are not able to measure? What about the outlying stuff?
I write on science, and I am fascinated by it. I am privileged to work with leading scientists. And from this direct experience of brilliant minds of science, I am not aware of any claims that science has figured everything out. From my understanding, there are still many frontiers yet to explore. In fact, that open-ness and sense of inquiry for which we value science dictates that sense of inquiry. Yet in blog comments like these, I often get a sense that science is some sort of club to which people (like me) with better education belong, and that through subscribing to the given tenets of that club, they can reject those who explore at the parameter of current scientific knowledge-- rather than congratulating the evident dedication to scientific inquiry.
If people want to assert their membership in a superior club, that's one thing. But if they want to respect the outer parameters of scientific inquiry, that would require open-mindedness.
The third issue is that material science has not been well able to accurately capture, measure, and describe the subjective phenomenon of experience. This occurs because the prevalent form of science today is reductive. Therefore due to this inability, it excludes these phenomena. Any form of subjective phenomena that cannot be measured quantitatively is considered to fall beyond the pale-- and more absurdly, considered as not to exist.
Yet we all know that it does from our own personal experience. Feelings of being alive, of love etc etc all fall within this domain-- and in fact, are among the most precious phenomena of being human, being alive...
This is the faultline of these types of discussions.
Deepak, it's obvious that you are trying to heal that rift for which I want to thank you.
I suspect, Deepak Chopra 'might' endorse a republican ticket after all.
Why?
Bobby Jindal -- an Indian American, born to an immigrant student couple (Jindal went to school with Mallika Chopra at the IVY league Brown University) -- is it seems, a Faith Healer and err...an Exorcist. No Kidding.
"Bobby Jindal, the 36-year old governor of Louisiana, is being taken seriously by the national press as a candidate on the shortlist to be John McCain's Vice President. No one doubts that he's a political prodigy -- his impressive resume includes stints as president of the state university system, a Congressman and now governor.
But one of Jindal's job titles hasn't gotten much attention -- and it just might prompt a few questions if his Veep candidacy gains steam: Exorcist.
As others noted during his 2003 and 2007 gubernatorial campaigns (see update), in an essay Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer.
Reading the article leaves no doubt that Jindal -- who graduated from Brown University in 1991, was a Rhodes Scholar, and had been accepted at Yale Law School and Harvard Medical School when he wrote the essay -- was completely serious about the encounter. He even said the experience "reaffirmed" his faith."

Truth is an experience. Healing and wholeness come by surrender. Surrender to the infinite field of God.
Surrender requires faith. Faith is an eternal remembrance of home. Home is where the heart is.
Faith allows us to let go of our selves so that we may return to the Whole.
I experienced this surrender 3 years ago, the night a kundalini fire swept through my entire body and the person I was dissolved into the rising fire to be reborn anew, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
It was extremely painful. It literally felt as if I was being burnt alive. The fire worked up my chakras after being released from the trauma of a hysterectomy. It exploded out my crown chakra and released me into the infinite Light.
At the point of awakening my Being was restored to perfect balance and all disharmony, illness, and disorder fell away to reveal the shining diamond of Wholeness that is everyone's birthright.
We can trancend the limits of the body.
We surrender our selves so that we can receive the World.

Deepak,
Maybe "faith" is a wavelength. A vibrational knowing, an attunement. A song of Being. Maybe it's an orientation in and pointed toward that which is whole. Foreign objects, such as beliefs, can't live in this atmospheric song -- they are mental and off-key. Maybe "memory of wholeness" is knowing and singing one's own sacred song.
Deepak,
Communication is a gift when it inspires a welling up underground. Communications on this blog provide this stimulus when something more than the mind is listened to and heard. The body has much to say and sing. Gratitudes....
