Hi Guys - Passing through Bombay - need a little help!

Tori Roy - June 27, 2008

Bombay Airport in the middle of the night - it's a ghost town. I landed at eleven on a weeknight and till two in the morning there were no more than fifteen people moving around like lost souls in the land of the undead.

It's funny how you are reminded that that the words "make out" mean an entirely different thing here. It is amusing that a simple headshake with the head held at an acute angle could have as many as three diffferent meanings - "yes", "OK" and "I shall try my best". Just as I was getting ready to have fun with these and other culture diffferences, that smug smile of condescension was wiped right off my face when a security guy handed me back my silk jacket - the one that I had left on the bus that ferried me between airports. My faith in mankind was restored again.

I have a 12 hour layover in Bombay next week on my way back to LA and I dont intend to spend it in Ghost Central if I can help it! If am forced to stay overnight at the airport I swear I am going to attempt a break-and- run with the first stranger that offers assistance a la Victor Novorsky in "The Terminal". And you can't tempt me by taking me out to dinner inside the terminal building with a view of the runway, No sir - I am a cheap date but not that cheap!! On all of my last few trips to India I have nearly always flown in to the Other city - the one in the North - you know the one with the educated, classy people that you guys in Bombay love to hate - so I shall refrain from mentioning names, lest I offend you guys. I am being super nice, see!

Now can I ask you guys for a favor?

Does anyone know if there is a Hotel Reservation counter at the airport and/or a hotline to call a bunch of hotels for reservation information and also if the hotels in the vicinity have a shuttle service for airport transfers?
I know I should've checked before leaving home but I was in a hurry - family emergency - what can you do? Death does not really give you much time.

Tori

I used to live in Bombay and a bit surprised by your comments. If anything Bombay has more things for you 24 X 7 than any other city in India. (I agree Delhi is a bit more classy and more orderly).

Here is a link you can use -

Not sure about your schedule but if possible try to reserve atleast 12 hours ahead of time so you get a hotel shuttle to pick you up. If not try to call up the number from airport telephone booth. If you have time to see a bit of daylight try to take a walk in Andheri and Rickshaw to Chaupati. (And I would keep a low profile).

I sat on my luggage for six hours at that airport once. On the return trip, I had a longer layover, and a friend told me just go get the hotel anyway. They were right. I had privacy, a few hours of sleep, a shower, and the whole thing was just much easier. Just cab or rickshaw. There are 4-star and 5-star hotels within 15 minutes or so auto rickshaw. No need to become one of the airport terminal ghosts. Plus you are more refreshed for the next leg of your journey.

And please, I hope you were joking about hanging around there hoping some guy to ask you on a dinner date. You were joking ---right?

Tori,are you in Los angels?
Just checking.
'Making out' may not bad idea. What do you think?

BTW I agree Bombay sucks.

Hi Sameer,
Thanks for the helpful information.

Hi Yogi-One,
Thank you for your help and NO I am not loking for a date - not right now anyways.........you'd have to see the movie The Terminal to know what I was talking about. (In the movie) He asked her out to dinner at the Airport Terminal.

Just a suggestion...This blogsite just may not be your cup of tea.
